Fun story: for filming, they had a stunt pilot really fly the training mission when Maverick did the 2:15 run. It was legit at 100 ft and super dangerous. So much so that after they got the shot - in one take - the stunt pilot (who was a retired military pilot) said, "Did we get it? Because I'm never doing that again."
One of my favorite underrated moments is when Rooster says, “Talk to me dad,” and then he hears Maverick’s voice. Maverick was very much a surrogate dad. He. stepped in for Goose in many ways.
Val Kilmer had throat cancer which permanently damaged his voice. The "medical issue" was added to the script so that IceMan could still be played by him. 💔
@@julieeverett7442 The real Top Gun is now located in the Nevada desert and much of the movie was filmed there, as you can see from the desert background. However, the movie pretends that it's still "North Island" in San Diego, which is where Top Gun used to be located when the first movie was made. Guess they needed that for the beach and sailing scenes.
As a middle aged woman 😆I wanted to say that I really appreciated that Maverick's love interest in this movie was in her 50s like me instead of in her 20s or 30s like most Hollywood movies when the guy is Tom Cruise's age.
1000% , it also doesn’t hurt that it’s Jennifer Connolly and she looks like she’s in her 30s. I remember watching this in theaters and when she first popped up on screen I audibly said “goddamn she looks good” the person next to me who I did not know started laughing and just added”yeah she does” .
I was a huge fan of the original top gun and i thought making a sequel 35 yrs later would be terrible. But damn i saw this in IMAX and was blown away. Incredible movie. Sad part about iceman is that val kilmer really has throat cancer in real life and tom crusie fought to have him be in the movie.
What some people don't get about the sport scenes in Top Gun and Maverick is they had different goals in each. In Top Gun it was volleyball because it was 2-on-2 competition same as the Top Gun course. In Maverick it's football because they already graduated and now they have to learn how to work as a team to accomplish a difficult goal.
Penny is an Admirals daughter that maverick dated that he took up in a jet when he was younger. She was mentioned in the first movie also he got in major trouble for taking her up In a jet!!!
Seeing the training the actors had to go through per Tom Cruise’s demands on top of taking real G’s filming in those planes all day is crazy!! They had to create cameras to go in the planes and the actors were running the cameras themselves on top of acting and being in the air. It’s wild!!
Fun fact: Tom Cruise is the only civilian to ever be catapulted off the aircraft carrier (the scene where the final mission starts). It was one of Tom's requirements to doing this movie was to be able to do that. The cast also spent a few weeks living on the USS Roosevelt while filming. In my opinion, this is one of the greatest films ever made. Thanks for reacting to it guys!
I think my favorite indicator of them being in the real jets is when they fly off the ship and you can see them jolt at take off. So sick. And you can really tell at the end when Rooster is behind Maverick because you can see Miles come out of his seat and brace himself on the window!
Penny Benjamin is mentioned twice in the first movie ..... When the ship commander is chewing them both out, in his office, for going after and helping Cougar, and again when Maverick and Goose are playing and singing on the piano, while Goose's wife mentions her to "Charlie."
Was pleasantly surprised with this movie normally when they try to make a sequel with a old classic it almost never works but they did a great job with this one 😊
In NYC on Memorial Day weekend this year, the city put on an event on the deck of the Intrepid - an old aircraft carrier permanently docked in the Hudson and used as a museum. Basically it was a free event where we all got to watch this movie on the deck of the ship, with all these fighters jets parked around us, and the skyline of Manhattan behind us just as the sun was setting. It was well worth waiting in line for 2 hours! Really cool memory
I actually work at a place themed after Top Gun because I live right by an Air Force base, and we used to have a tv that was solely meant for playing this movie on repeat lmao, the remote for the TV was labelled as Tom Cruise
The enemy is implied to be Iran. They’re the only country still flying F-14s (the one Mav and Rooster steal) and they’re actively trying to enrich Uranium for a nuke. They’re also trying to procure the Su-57 Felon, the 5th gen fighter we saw. Pilots carry an Sig 9mm pistol into combat, not sure why they omitted it in the movie.
I love Top Gun, I love speed and adrenaline, but this second part is amazing, I've seen it a thousand times and I'll continue to see it a thousand more! So cool!

I think it's difficult for someone who wasn't alive back then to understand the impact of a film like this and how awesome the effects WERE at that time. You all live in a time where every video game is in 5D (or whatever D we're up to) so a film from 1986 isn't going to be as impressive for you all in many ways, that's natural. But for us? Charlie was his interest in the first one. They mentioned that he went ballistic with Penny Benjamin in Top Gun, but thats all. Everyone went into this movie I feel coming out swooning for Tom or Miles, & I was like..gimme more Hangman lol. Thankfully, we’ve gotten so much more of him ❤
Penny wasn’t his girlfriend in the first movie, but her name was mentioned. In one scene, Maverick's past exploits are said to include "a history of high-speed passes over five air-control towers and one admiral's daughter," and Goose mutters Penny's name under his breath - making her the "admiral's daughter" in question. That's later confirmed when Goose's wife is teasing Maverick about his past, saying that Goose "told me all about the time you went ballistic with Penny Benjamin."
I love the first Top Gun movie but I prefer this one too. There is gonna be a third Top Gun. Glen Powell recently confirmed that they already have a starting date.
Based on his skills Hangman would have been an obvious choice as a team member for the mission. But there is another factor that's important for Maverick: working as a team so everyone gets out there and back home. Hangman proved several times that he is no teamplayer. That he doesn't care about anything but finishing the mission and showing off what he is capable of.
I remember watching this in the theater and telling my friend “I just don’t want Bob to die”! 😆 I also wasn’t sure what the mission was, like where are they going? And what are they blowing up?? 😆 I had to look it up afterwards lol

It's not speciefied in the movie but someone here on youtube (Film theorists I think) made a deduction based on the geography, the planes used and current political enemies of the US to determin who they are fighting against and it's probably Iran.
LOL You can't kill Tom in the movie? Uh, have you seen Edge of Tomorrow? Saw this one in cinema and it was absolutely awesome. One of the best movies I've ever seen. I'm also old enough to have seen the first Top Gun in cinema. Love your reactions.
This is the only movie I paid to see twice in theatres. In the theatres, there's a prologue of Tom Cruise talking about how he wanted to make this movie specifically for a theatre going experience. He wasn't wrong...My chair and body was legit shaking at times with the engine turbine thrust and my heart rate was through the roof. I watched it again a year later on my TV and it was a night and day difference in terms of experience.
As with any action, you have to suspend disbelief sometimes, but I loved sooo many things about this film. Not overdoing the CGI definitely enhanced the wow factor, imo. Great casting choices. They did a good job of selling Miles Teller as baby Goose (Rooster) by just adding a moustache and similar outfits/style. Bringing back Val Kilmer for a short, but beautiful scene made for a memorable final exchange. Also, Jennifer Connelly is stunning. P.S. I can't be the only one who rewatches the beach scene at least 4 or 5 times per viewing of this movie. 🫠😍
Maverick was thrown out fo the bar because he couldn't pay the tab for all those beers. She said that his credit card had been declined and he didn't have enough money. If you talk over dialogue in the film you miss things.
they filmed the movie in San Diego, California and they are making a top gun 3 and Val Kilmer had was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2015 and now he beat it but still has a hard time talking
There is so much underlining context and foreshadowing with this movie. Like at @8:17 you can view it as the age of movie stars and the last great American actors is dying. Tom Cruise is getting older & how much does he have left, the movie/theater business is dying. Similar to there won’t be any pilots needed anymore. When this movie came out it was life saving for movies and everyone felt that. Special!
19:54 Penny Benjamin said North Island 😅 and yes it’s in San Diego (North Island naval base in Coronado 👍🏼) those daggers from the aircraft carriers were to destroy the enemy flight field

Great reaction guys. I just wish the volume was louder on the movie
You absolutely need to react to the pitch meeting and cinema sins for this movie.
North Island not Northern Ireland. They are in San Diego. Coronado, CA is also called North Island.
RULES ARE RULES gentlemen. Maverick is accostumed to not being held accountable. Penny holds his ass accountable.
Maverick was thrown out fo the bar because he couldn't pay the tab for all those beers. She said that his credit card had been declined and he didn't have enough money. If you talk over dialogue in the film you miss things.
NORTH ISLAND California near San Diego.. Not N Ireland lol
Hangman is the maverick of this movie, rooster is iceman.
13:21 he couldn't pay the tab so he got kicked out
they filmed the movie in San Diego, California and they are making a top gun 3 and Val Kilmer had was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2015 and now he beat it but still has a hard time talking
I guess that's the same girl, just didn't remember her being Jennifer Connelly! I think they're in Ireland!
That's North Island San Diego. Lol.
Special!
my favourite movieee, and my favourite guyssss❣🥲
44:01-44:05 that was literally my same reaction 😂😂😂
I didn’t love the first Top Gun (I was 23 when it came out) but I really, really liked Top Gun: Maverick.
19:54 Penny Benjamin said North Island 😅 and yes it’s in San Diego (North Island naval base in Coronado 👍🏼) those daggers from the aircraft carriers were to destroy the enemy flight field
