Actulally, till 3th grade I didn't read - at all. But my mother "tricked" me....
She showed me some "tapes" that I would like to hear for bedtime stories to hear (of 3 ???)
The next time we got to the(childrens-) library my mum introduced me to the books and from that time on - I've been hooked...

Danny devito pretty much did everything on this movie: starred, narrated, produced and directed it. But most importantly him and his wife (who also plays his wife in themovie!) took care of Mara (matilda) as her mother was in hospice dying of cancer as the movie was shot. Danny even got an advanced copy of the film so Mara's mother could see it before she died, which she eventually went on to do 4 months before the movie released. He also dedicated the movie to her.

Watching it back is a totally different experience. The whole “fantasy” is just the world from a child’s perspective.
When you’re 3 feet tall being tossed above someone over 6ft is basically flying.
The power adults have, “I’m smart, you’re dumb, I’m big, your little” is basically what every kid hears when they are being bossed around.
Your favorite teacher is like an adoptive parent.
Stories are magic before you fully grasp the difference between fiction and non fiction.

Her powers came through rage and strife. She was happy with Miss Honey, so she no longer had access to her powers.

What I found interesting is in addition to directing, narrating, and starring in it Danny Devito and his wife Rhea Perlman (played Matilda's mom) took on parental roles for Mara Wilson (Matilda) during filming. Mara's mom was battling cancer and wasn't going to make it to the film's release. Danny, being a wonderful gem of a human, arranged a private screening ahead of the theatrical release so she could see the film before she died. Mara came out with an autobiography where she talks about it and how wonderful Danny and Rhea were to her during that time.

  • @laurenjohnson5941

This movie is based on a Roald Dahl novel that my big sister used to read to me when we were little. Sitting on her top bunk, chewing on ice cubes, trying not to hit my head on the ceiling, with my sister doing silly voices for her narration are *core memories* for me. She read me The Witches, the BFG, Matilda, and Charlie & the Chocolate Factory (all books written by Dahl). Our own home situation pretty much sucked, and it wasn't until much later that I found out she was also going through something really bad - but even with all that going on, she was lovely to me , which is crazy to think back on because she's only 3 years older than me. Roald Dahl books are nice for kids because the narrative usually makes its child characters the most rational, while the adults are either the aggressors or ineffectual.
that might've sounded sad on a reread ? but fr I love this movie and it reminds me of how great my big sister is!

    • @ISoWin4eva
      @ISoWin4eva 21 день тому

@@drewmaidment2685 I really don't believe that's true that "most Americans don't know Roald Dahl" considering that every library, school library I've visited has his books. The movies are big and remain standard to the fact that Dahl Day has been promoted by publishers even in the recent past. I know educators are likely to pair his books with the movie when they are able. Dahl is readily available here; box sets are found in every store imaginable and even in most school book fair vendors. Dahl is classic. As an educator, I've seen his biographical articles in most, if not all, of our nationwide school and public library databases. If someone has never heard of Roald Dahl, they even know his books and not the author's name; someone was likely "not a big reader" or they didn't like that kind of genre or fiction as a whole. I see these categories every year.
That being said, we're all prone to miss something that others may consider "common knowledge", but Dahl isn't likely to be in that category for most Americans. In fact, this being the end of the school year for most schools in the US, I bet students will hear about his books for summer reading, read/have read-alouds for some of his short stories or watch one of the movies over the next few weeks or so. I know one of public library that has the rights to show Wonka so, of course, they will promote him, because his works stand the test of time.

This was one of my absolute favourites as a kid. I used to tape playing cards to a string and then tape them to the ceiling fan in my parents room to recreate the scene when she finally learns how to use her powers. I asked Santa for powers one year. The nostalgia! 🤩

I did get to watch this as a kid... and I had the BIGGEST crush on Miss Honey. But that aside, I loved this movie. The magical element of everything is always turned up to 11 when viewed through a child's eyes, and this movie was no exception.
But the story behind it is even better when you learn how wonderful Danny and Rhea are as people. They became a second family to Mara (Matilda) during production, as her mom was undergoing treatment for cancer and eventually passed away. The complete opposites of their characters in the film, they are two caring, loving human beings.

miss trunchbull is british as a nod to the roald dahl book this movie is based on. the movie takes place in the US but the book is set in the UK. i'm pretty sure the book includes a line about "stupid americans" so it's very funny that danny devito ran with that angle for the movie.

The chocolate bit always reminds me of my great uncle Andy. We used to go on walks in the forest near where I grew up. When I was feeling tired he would say “that tree over there is a magic tree. Tap it 3 times with a stick and say “magic tree, magic tree have you got a treat for me?” and then a chocolate bar or something would fall from the branches.” He could have just handed us the snacks but instead he made it magical for us throwing the treats up into the trees 🥰

God I grew up with this movie. I can still recite it word for word in my sleep lmao. This was such a comfort movie for me, and growing up with a verbally abusive parent, I realized later why. I've also always loved reading so much, so seeing another character who utilizes books and reading as their main form of escapism just made me love both reading and the movie more! I even made everyone watch it at my like 8th birthday party 😂So glad you guys watched it!! Lil fun fact, while filming the sequence where Matilda is dancing in the room after finally unlocking her powers, Mara Wilson was shy and too embarrassed to dance by herself around the room, so Danny DeVito made literally everyone behind the cameras dance with her so she wasn't alone! Even the camera people were tapping their feet along with her. He really took care of her on this set while filming. I've seen a bunch of other comments sharing that so I won't get into that side of it, but it's just really cool how much he cared for her.

Man… rewatching this movie with you guys reminded me of just how much I hated the adults but Ms. Honey and the librarian who helped Matilda with her library books. Matilda’s family is just the absolute WORSE people! Also Mrs. Trunchbull used to scare the shit out of us 90’s babies. Build like a full on powerlifter/bodybuilder too. That infamous scene of Matilda and Ms. Honey running away from her was one of the most intense scenes ever. Matilda hiding under that table was such an IQ+ move on her end. Man… they don’t make movies like this anymore sadly.
I love that it’s funny when its appropriate but has an important and thought provoking messages for children without insulting their intelligence.

I think pancakes were such a big deal when we were kids because they took time to make, and most kids have working parents who don't have time or energy to actually cook breakfast every morning, so it's more about having something more interesting than cold cereal and toaster waffles. Anything more elaborate than eggs on toast was a big occasion in my house growing up.

Yeah, as director, Danny Devito does the narration, and it’s definitely confusing. It would fit better if it was narrated by Rhea Perlman or Miss Honey. Mrs. Wormwood gets a bit of redemption by realizing that they aren’t a good fit to be her parents. It’s a nice gesture that she lets go of Matilda to be with Miss Honey.

  • @Sultans-World

Danny Devito was narrating cos he produced this movie. Him and Rita (his wife in the movie and real life) read 'Matilda' the novel and fought hard to create a movie out of it so it was their baby. Makes sense why they wanted to narrate and play the parents.
