Recently got back into bmx biking and less then a week ago took a nasty fall that left my face all cut up and broke my collar bone. Stay safe out there and just because you used to be able to do it, does not mean you can definitely do it again after some time has passed.
So glad i found this, Currently restoring my first bike, a 2000 Mongoose Fuzz extreme and was gonna get it powder coated, Will remember to take every single thing apart and designate what not to powder coat
It will get sorted out, but yes, while powdercoat is an outstanding product, thought must be put into when when and where it's used.. seatposts I just paint, and when they get scratches, I repaint them.. Sick bike tho, in its day, one of THE bikes to have.
Thanks for letting me know what to ask for, when getting a person to powder coat for me, I would have never known about the screws and the inside of the bike
First off are the pedals 1/2 inch? Second, take a exacto knife and cut around all the crank bolts, I know it's a pain in the ass but if you take your time it will work and third , tell your customer not to ever just drop off parts to a powder coater with out having a talk with them first.
Yep yep and if you really want it take that another step you can take an exacto knife around the sprocket and chain wheel very carefully so it'll crack where you cut it oh yeah and they can't fool us he's b*********** us those are half inch pedals
Powder coaters.. In my experience, you have to remove every single bolt and cover parts you don't want to be painted. They'll never do it if you give them too many items to paint.
@@bmxscape Maybe, but BoltDepot also has stainless steel bolts available, and every bolt length possible, so you can get the exact bolt length needed to utilize all the threads in your stem. My factory stem bolts left about 1/2 of stem threads unused. I buy a ton of stuff from there, usually in stainless steel.
@@bmxscape Thanks for the heads up. It seems there is risk of corrosion in the presence of moisture, which shouldn't be a problem. I also applied a generous amount of Park Tool grease on both the stem threads and the bolt threads. Hopefully no issues!
T on the serial number means it's a chromoly frame. The Team Mongoose and Supergoose are the same chromoly frames. The difference is that the Supergoose were nickel plated and the team frames were candy apple red or blue.
This reminds me when I was back at School, a white bike, and Someone saying "guys" everysingle second. No offence. This videos are the best you can find about old School BMX education. Thanks. And keep it up.
Everything phu up tight about is all fixable other than the crank and he will have to deal with that if he ever takes the sproket apart. So hell it'll be fine. Tell him not to give himself a heart attack he getting to old to get excited lol. Great job guys Alfredo!
Your shop in the bomb man I just died at 12:20. He been better off buying the complete crank set. Wow looks good as a wall piece but a test drive cant happen.
You're welcome, I was one of the individuals that inform you guys it was a team model..... Also, the owner of the mongoose should of gone with a Dura Ace 3-piece crank keep it authentic.
Here's a show idea, Phu; how do you remove Odyssey Thunderbolts? I'm playing hell trying to change my sprocket. I even greased it when I installed the cranks.
The repop brakes are ok, but mine had a bent spring- had to use a generic, and the quick release doesn’t work… but then, the quick release on the originals was often stuck too. I like reusing the originals.
Nice bike, at the end of the day it's the owners bike and how they want it. However unless they are 100% doing everything themselves they should consult with the person or people assembling the bike to see what works and doesn't work and figure out a solution to it.
I'm always amused by these customers that can't build their own bikes. I could understand having the wheels built but everything else is just bolting it together. Does Phu offer to do it for free if he can use it for the video?
The whole thing definitely seems weird to me. Who is into old school vintage bmx restoration if you didn’t grow up riding them? Why didn’t he ask the guy who was going to be assembling it about the process/design? One thing for sure: the bike is a disaster 😂
I’ve watched allot of your videos! Great videos👍but I’ve never seen this one? Great restore on this Team Mongoose! I had 3 mongoose bikes back in the day! Half Chromoly Mongoose, Team Mongoose which came in like almost like a candy Blue not that color blue but that is a nice blue, similar to the stock blue they came in, in the 70, early 80s My 3rd was a chrome supergoose! Keep up the great videos!!
I’m a strong believer in original survivor condition. Powder coating makes the bike look new.. yes But in reality it’s not. It’s old school and should be kept as such. But that’s just my opinion. Different riderz different likes. Greetings from Oceanside California 😎 Stay RAD 🤙
Ive owned mine sine new it doesn't have paint either. But except for tires andone side crank arm. It 100 percent original all black pads and swaed seat. I bought it at the shwin shop in Rockville MD. The same place i got my 5 speed
OMG.... ok I want to restore my bike now. I still have my Elf frame/fork from 1989. a pretty much everything else was GT, minus the Peregrine 3-piece cranks (even replaced the stripped bolts ) She's rough, Original mushroom grips are missing the ends (of course), donuts are peeling, The GT chain is missing, the hubs off the aluminum hubs are shot.
The bicycle really does look totally amazing except for all of the white powder coated parts on it. The crankset really should be gold including the stem and everything else that got painted white.
Hey everyone I'm going to be purchasing a 1994 gt it has vertigo stickers but I'm not sure if it is a vertigo it's a good deal so I'm still getting it. But how can I figure out the bikes original paint color the paint that's on it is a darkish galaxy purple if you can picture than. Also the paint is in decent condition I don't see any missed spots showing a diffrent color or any paint runs. I looked all over google for a gt in this color and could not find it. I wish I could post a pic..
The feeling of having so many wrong things going with the paint and having it put together by an expert is so frustrating as each part is put together.
It's not that bad hopefully. What size are the cranks? An pedals. Can just get adapters for it. 9/16 to 1/2. If the pedals are the smaller ones. Hope it works out for you. I have faith in you Phu You Can Do It

Hey people, can anyone tell me if a chrome Mongoose Pro Sniper 1999/2000 is still a thing? Dudes on Vital BMX were losing their shit over a couple in 2020 calling it the Holy Grail. Epic all day, love from Wales. ❤️🏴🏴
Thanks for all the support boys!
Prize ??

I broke my collar bone many years ago... Wasn't a good time.
Be well.
I just broke my collar bone from a bmx crash last week still in a sling

lazy cost money
Exactly. Most of these guys have no interest in, or knowledge of, the item you’re having powder coated. They’re just doing their job.
New stem bolts are about $5 @ BoltDepot, they have bolts for everything, including stainless steel bolts.
$5 for some bolts damn bruh you can get bolts much cheaper. every bike shop should have a stash of m6 bolts

Wrong. T is for Team. C is for chromoly
the landlord special. reminds me of the house i'm currently living in. so painful.
Powder coating the frame and forks was good but the rest of the parts should have been re anodized and chromed instead.

can you put a 3/8th axle on 14mm dropout???
they make adapters to go from 3/8 to 14 mm the pain in the but is going from 14mm to 3/8
So what does that mean? Is the peddle screws too small?

Tighten everything up and use a touch up pen inside the bolts if the customer is aware from the beginning then it shouldn’t be a problem
