Snatch Ring v Snatch Block Self Recovery Test

  • I have replaced the heavy 3.5kg x 4 snatch blocks with four snatch rings coming in at under 2kg in total. The kit is so much lighter and more manageable I can include the winch extension strap and still be well under the original load. Snatch rings work almost as well as the blocks but the blocks are no where near enough better to justify their bulk and weight. I got a lot of valuable information and self-confidence from watching Robert Pepper's channel. He has some superb videos explaining snatch blocks, winching, loads and so much more. There is a slope in my yard and this time I had the car much further up the slope and off the flat so even being a bit lighter than the Freelander 2, it was harder work but still very doable for an old bloke with a massive hernia.

There will be less friction using snatch block pullies vs. snatch rings. If I was pulling loads of stuff with out a winch, I would definitely opt for the blocks. If I was using a powered winch then I would use rings. I would use soft shackles that have a working load limit double or triple the ropes rating. Anything beyond a 4:1 setup I would probably use blocks instead of rings using a winch or hand strength.

Fair comment but this set up gets the job done and weighs so much less than snatch blocks. I have to carry the kit in my car at all times and then hump it out and use it. Like most things it is a compromise with the focus being on practical useage rather than ultimate efficiency. Keep in mind my goal is to self-recover, forwards or backwards, on my own if necessary.

Nice. I just ordered a soft shackle and snatch ring and then saw this vid and ordered another ring to go next to it. I have a steel shackle and snatch block for the anchor point. Gonna be pulling some logs with it tomorrow...

Enjoy! The rings are so much lighter. Watch my ground anchor test video to see these in action in the sand dunes.

Hi mate, got a couple of questions. Is there a name for that configuration with 4 snatch rings/blocks? What is the mechanical advantage? Also what is that rope rated for? Because the load is spread over 4? ropes, does that mean you can use a weaker rope? Cheers

It looks like he's trying to create a 4:1 ratio for more advantage. Yes, this set up spreads out the load so the rope does pull more than it would if it was a straight pull, but it is more about the ability/force needed actually to pull the load.
