Lionel Rose - Was an Australian bantamweight boxer, the first Indigenous Australian to win a world title. He later became the first Indigenous Australian to be named Australian of the Year.

Why have I never heard of this fighter until now? That was some of the cleanest and beautiful counter punching and movement ever! Now a fan of Mr.Lionel -thank u!
Probably because of an awful fall off after his best career win.
Lionel was special. As a kids growing up in the 60's we had two hero's, Lionel Rose and Johnny Famechon, then in the 80's it was Lester Ellis and Jeff Fenech.
Rose needs to be talked about in Australian boxing with the likes of Fenech and Kostya. Bloke was a pioneer of Australian boxing and deserves more credit.

His health later failed him after melting down to make the weight but in his prime was as good as it gets. Even as a kid, I realised from his biography "Lionel Rose: Australian" that his efforts to make the weight were a danger to his longevity. Loved Lionel and feared for him.
He let his weight fluctuate too much in between fights - I think he was sick of the regimented diet & lifestyle he needed to adopt to remain at the top.
When he was at his best he was a beautiful boxer to watch though.
The way covered the ground so quickly, & remained on balance after his combos & left hook, was something else.

Only starting watching Lionel today, always heard of him but never watched as I didn’t know he was an Aussie !! What a good fighter

Mymum and uncle used to talk to him behind the fence at his gran place. They went to the same primary school. I’ve been to every place he hung around and all my family live near drouin and Warragul

StrikingSound I remember watching his fights with Bert Cooper and Morrison, I think he lost on both occasions if I remember correctly? I'll check out some of his fight at some point in the neat future and see if he's worth highlighting. Don't know much about him.

As someone as a boxer from New-Zealand, I can’t believe I have never seen this Australian legend fight…. He’s not even talked about much in his own country, or am I wrong?
As a non-Australian I'm really not sure. I do know Rose is held in high regard in all Boxing circles, he was an excellent champion.

Even in 2019 the racial abuse and bigotry in Australia is still alive and well . I would love a work and career but I refuse too work pay taxes and contribute too a country who makes money solely from the death hardships and exploitation of others . I.m proud of my people. He was the youngest world champion ever for his time at just 19 since the the record has been broken. great fighter but his smoking and alcohol stopped him from becoming one of the greats
I love his footwork in some of this. He makes the motions look effortless yet he covers so much distance so fast.
