    Wilfredo Gomez - Sometimes referred to as Bazooka Gómez, is a Puerto Rican former professional boxer and three-time world champion. He is frequently mentioned among the best Puerto Rican boxers of all time by sports journalists and analysts, along with Félix Trinidad, Miguel Cotto, Wilfred Benítez, Esteban De Jesús, Edwin Rosario, and Carlos Ortíz. His seventeen consecutive knockouts in championship defenses is a record for all boxing divisions. He was ranked number 13 on The Ring magazine's list of the "100 greatest punchers of all time". In 1995, Gómez was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. Gómez has a record of 44 wins, 3 losses and 1 draw, with 42 knockout wins and all three losses also by knockout.

    I grew-up watching Wilfredo Gomez, in my native Puerto Rico, back in the mid 70's, and early 80's, and he was definitely one of my idols in Boxing. The Ring Magazine once considered Wilfredo Gomez, as one of the hardest punchers, of All Times in the Bantamweight devision. That's how good Wilfredo Gomez was, when he dominated that division. I personally believe, he was never the same, after he moved up in weight class. I don't think he carried his punching power, or stamina. Oh, and most definitely, I don't think he was the same, after the lost to Salvador Sanchez. But I most said, Wilfredo Gomez is one of the Greatest Champions, my little Island has concived.

    He could and did KO opponents moving his fist through the air less than two hand lengths. His punches were like a blacksmith contacting the anvil.
    Extreme power punch with either fist. He knocked out seemingly invincible unbeaten untouchable Zarate. Pintor was a wickedly skilled boxer however Gomez destroyed him in a KO. He wore out by attrition the much younger, unbeatable Lockridge very late in his career.
    He had unusually superb footwork.
    Gomez is among the Greatest Top 15 of All Time in the Ring.

    Gomez was a real good fighter and an especially hard puncher with either hand. However his record is a bit bloated. Sure he dominated the jr. featherweight division but let's put it in the proper context. I'm old enough to remember watching him fight. The Jr. Featherweight division had just been created the year before Gomez won the title. The division wasn't very good, there was little depth and quite frankly at the time nobody really cared in the slightest about any of the jr./super wight classes. The general opinion was that they were for the guys who just weren't good enough to compete in one of the legitimate divisions. They were also used by guys who wanted to move up in weight and wanted to test the waters against slightly smaller and softer opposition that a full move up would have represented.
    So sure Gomez was a heck of a fighter and one of the all time hardest punchers pound for pound and a legitimate hall of fame fighter. However he never saw the day that he could beat guys like Salvador Sanchez, Azumah Nelson and Eusebio Pedroza (no disgrace, these guys were all great).
    Gomez also got a gift in that decision "win" over Rocky Lockridge. The only reason that he got that decision was because the fight was held in Puerto Rico. Lockridge would have had to pretty much knock him out to get the win there.

    • @hectorsanchez1978
      @hectorsanchez1978 4 роки тому

      Excuses 😂😂 so you saying Zarate or Pintor wasn’t great? Come on stop it. He lost only when he moved up in weight. Gómez has a better record then everyone you mention and just because every lost doesn’t take away his greatness because at the end of the day he is a hall of a famer and world record breaker .

    • @Johnl1800
      @Johnl1800 4 роки тому +1

      @@hectorsanchez1978 Did you even bother to read what I posted? I gave the guy credit for a legitimate Hall of Fame Career. But the fact remains that the bulk of his record was compiled in a weak division that nobody cared about against largely ordinary opposition. The two best opponents that he beat were both coming up in weight.
      Zarate was great and even though he was the one moving up in weight Gomez did score a decisive stoppage. Pintor was a good fighter but on an all time basis he was not a truly great fighter. Nobody then (or now) would seriously rank him anywhere near the top 10 all time bantamweights. Maybe if you want to be generous he could fall somewhere in the 15-25 range (maybe). And then again here we have another guy that Gomez beat who was coming up in weight.
      Salvador Sanchez, Azumah Nelson and Eusebio Pedroza all compiled their records in a far stronger division with greater depth than the one that Gomez dominated.

      "Give the man his credit. He has made it to the hall of fame"

      How is Sanchez-Gomez a fluke? So shortly after that Azumah ktfo Got gomez also and that's also a fluke? I guess all of Wilfredo's losses were flukes. Gomez's excuse was the partying he did and being a womanizer, so he had a reason to lose and not Salvador. Hello. Salvador died 3am in the morning coming back from a girlfriends place. The only difference I see from Sanchez-Gomez and Trinidad-Vargas was Sanchez-Gomez was a one sided destruction where Gomez did not belong in the same ring with Sanchez and Trinidad-Vargas was a war. Your boxing cred is weak. I'm boricua and even I know Sanchez owned that ass all day everyday. Ask Tito's dad Felix Trinidad, Sr. if he thinks Sanchez-Gomez is a fluke. Look up his record on boxrec and see who pops up: Sanchez-Gomez a fluke,
      That's exactly what makes this fun , these SORE LOOSERS..... First they don't want to admit they are behind, then take a childish behavior trying to console themselves making it look like their wins are bigger... It doesn't matter if you win or lose in a fight because it happens to 98 % of all boxers . Either way if I was Mexican I would probably be ashamed to have an argument like that against such a tiny but MIGHTY opponent. It's like Goliath pointing out that he won 3 rounds against DAVID in the post fight interview!

      Chavez had 6 loses. Very few boxers go undefeated.
