The 2021 Toyota Sienna sees a ground-up redesign from the old model that brings an all-new hybrid powertrain into the mix, as well as all the technology and features you've come to expect from their family (and dog) hauling minivan. But is it truly better than the old minivan? Here's why we think it is.

    I owned a mini van for years. When it comes to hauling people and cargo, nothing beats a mini van. My six cylinder engine was surprisingly quick for a vehicle of its size. And fuel economy was very acceptable. I could park in any parking space or parking structure, and easily fit in any standard 7 foot garage of your typical home. Mini vans have fallen out of favor in recent years. The cross over and SUV are considered "cooler" today. I'm not sure why that is. A mini van is simply the most versatile on the road today.

      I completely agree. I grew up w minivans and loved them. When we first had our twins, my husband refused to get a minivan. We got a large suv instead as a compromise but it was inadequate in carrying 6 ppl and all the baby gear. We later replaced it w minivans and couldn’t be happier. 6 ppl and plenty of room to spare! And much more fuel effiecient too.

    • @palebeachbum
      @palebeachbum 3 роки тому +12

      Minivans are definitely more practical for family duty, but just like station wagons before them, they developed a stigma for being uncool. So families started gravitating to SUVs. Now that families default to SUVs, they're starting to develop and uncool vibe. Hopefully people will go back to minivans because they make a heck of a lot more sense.

    • @Wasabi9111

      @@palebeachbum my concern is that with the rapidly dwindling minivan sales, I’m not sure it’ll be worth it for mfrs to continue to produce minivans after this crop of current generation. It took Toyota 10 yrs to come out w a new generation and FCA 9 yrs to come out w the current model. They’re definitely not putting much resources in developing new minivans.

      Some time ago my fiance and I thought triplets were on the way so I went to my buddy who owns a used car dealership. He had a few large vehicles but the most cost-efficient of the bunch was a 2010 Toyota Sienna Limited. We found out later that the triplets were a lie told to us by a doctor, but the van stayed as we figured it could be useful later. That later came when a new company started sending out requests for tire deliveries(I am an independent courier by trade) and the van has absolutely no problems carrying huge numbers of tires. Add to that it is exceptionally luxurious even if the infotainment definitely shows age, so really long shifts are a breeze and I don't have to worry about how to cram in the orders. Soon I will hopefully become a Bird Flier so I can use the 120v outlets in the back to charge Bird scooters while out driving! Long and short is that this vehicle is objectively the best vehicle in the fleet by a mile, and I'd probably have to spend a fortune if I ever wanted to replace it!

Not a lot of HP but pretty good torque, space savings from no drive shaft or transfer case and outstanding fuel economy. Perfect for winter and mild off-roading (although few would be off road in a minivan 😁).

    I bought a 2020 in August when I heard how horrible this redesign was going to be. The 2020 is one of the most reliable vehicles produced. It has a proven drive train with a naturally aspirated V6 and 8 speed automatic. Forget about reliability and low cost repairs with an AWD hybrid, but if you are only leasing it probably doesn't matter. Also, the 2021 AWD system can not produce very much power at the rear wheels. The 2020 active torque system is much better in the snow. Forget about using the 2021 for hauling things because the second row seats are no longer removable. I have large dogs and need to remove the second row for easy access and space.

    Convinced my parents to get a 2014 Sienna instead of a Highlander. The 2nd row seats are so comfortable and at 6'1" there is so much room and the 3rd row is also good up to just over 6'.
    That said, I much prefer the previous version, as the 3.5L with real auto allows for great towing in hilly, windy terrain. The van tows 3000 lbs 2600 miles each summer to the cross country cottage and back. The transmission programming works so well when towing, go near the brake and it down shifts a gear or two depending on how hard you brake. They are real rocket ships unloaded as well! Not really into the new looks (inside or out) or the engine/trans offering.

    Really don't understand why people prefer SUV over minivans. Minivans are so much better in every single way. What mainstream cars/SUVs have power doors? Sliding doors are way more practical and better than regular doors and provide more room. Not to mention way more space (even more space than full size SUV), better mpg, way more practical, usable 3rd row seats, way cheaper than a full size SUV, way more luxury and more comfortable than SUV of the same price range, and the list goes on. And only in a minivan can you get a first class style recline backseat (that you can only find in ultra luxury cars) for under $50k. Not to mention the legroom and headroom that surpass even the S class by a long shot.

The biggest disappointment for me was not being able to get AWD in the Premium version this year. Bummer!! Also, the rear wiper is now located on the window on the other reviews that I have seen. My Sienna has the rear wiper tucked up underneath the rear spoiler, out of sight and protected from the elements particularly during the winter months. It was nice not having to fight and scrape the ice and snow from the rear wiper blade during the winter. I’ve decided to wait till 2022 in hopes that Toyota will offer the Plug-in version of Hybrid then. Plus I’m inclined to stay away from first year models of new generations of vehicles.

    Those tracks in the floor have been around since the 2011 model and are an awful design. Not only are they ugly, but little things get easily stuck in them. You still can't fold the second row flat which is inexcusable. The third row is also a back killer to stow and bring up.
