In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm featuring music by Heart for a Woman Wednesday. I'm listening to the full album version of Magic Man, the lead song from their debut album Dreamboat Annie. I had never previously heard the extended version, and I really enjoyed it. I hope you do as well!

One of the coolest things about the internet and AOR radio is that there are still a few AOR stations which have an internet presence. Such as WDNS FM in bowling Green Kentucky which has an app where you can listen to them from anywhere in the world and a phone number you can call and make request. You can make requests no matter where you're at! I love having a station that plays requests and records your voice for inclusion on where those tracks were suggested. Peace!

I still have my original vinyl. Love this album. The 70s had a lot of bad pop music, but the rock music that came out during the 70s is timeless and women held their own. The title song of their album Dog and Butterfly, which came out a few years later, is one of my favorites songs of all time.

  • @Don-Jack

It wasn't supposed to be a concept album but the producer Mike Flicker had the idea to make the 3 versions of Dreamboat Annie to tie the album together, so it's "concept-lite" I guess. Ann and Nancy liked that aspect and the follow up album "Magazine" was intended to actually be a concept album even with a magazine-like booklet full of pictures and stories, but then all the legal mess with the record company happened.
There is a radio edit of this song that does shorten the instrumental and was probably played more often back then, but rock stations usually play the whole song.

I just commented that "Mistral Wind" and "Love Alive" are far beyond in composition level to MM, "Barracuda", and COY, which seem to be the main three reaction channels limit themselves to with Heart. Love "Sylvan song/Dream Of The Archer" as well.

  • @markjacobsen8335

One of the most perplexing things to me about reaction channels and Heart is that their best songs, like "Love Alive", "Mistral Wind", and "Dog & Butterfly" never get reacted to. It's always "Magic Man", "Barracuda", and "Crazy On You". Those are good songs, but they do not match the composition level of the other three I mentioned. I hope Doug gets to those some time.

Heart has a very special place in my, well, heart. I'm a child of the 70s, and my mom was a big Heart fan. She died when I was very young, and I don't have many memories of her. One is looking at the Dreamboat Annie album cover and thinking that one of them (probably Ann) was her. Another is that she drove a big ol' Plymouth Barracuda, so I associate the Heart song "Barracuda" with that car, and thus with my mom. (Another is that she hated scrambled eggs, which is apropos of nothing, but I thought I'd share the memory because it makes me smile.)

Doug - In Houston in '77 and '78, we had a radio station called (KRL)"Y-94". It's still there today and plays current radio drivel, but, at that time, for that brief period, it was the most amazing album-oriented rock station - I remember hearing Styx Grand Illusion on there for the first time.
Every night at 10:30, they would play a whole album from start to finish. I had never heard Heart before, had no idea who they were, or heard anything about them. The DJ came on and said we're tracking a new album tonight and this is a great one. The group is Heart and the Album is Dreamboat Annie... I sat there listening on my headphones just blown away.

A friend of mine, Dave Wilson, no relation to the Wilson sisters, played drums on Magic Man. He was in a neighboring room at Mushroom Studios in Vancouver laying down tracks for another band. As he explained to me, Heart was having problems finding a drummer who gave them the groove they wanted so they went to the next studio over looking for a drummer to try out, they found Dave, he gave it a shot and laid down the groove they wanted.
He was also a singing drummer and he used that high "Ow" that David Lee Roth frequently uses. He claims that Roth started using that after Roth heard Dave sing and play somewhere in California back in the '70s. I have no idea if that is true or not and it's pretty much impossible to verify, but I do know that Dave is no liar and the Magic Man story is 100% true and verifiable. He is listed in the song and album credits.
A number of the studio musicians on the album Dreamboat Annie went on to very successful careers in Canada. Among others, Rob Deans went on to play keyboards for Trooper, and Ray Ayotte founded the world famous drums maker, Ayotte Drums.
Anyways, Doug, you can refer to me as Cliff Claven from now on.

Great channel Doug, when I want to learn about music I turn to you and Rick Beato. About a month ago I finally put together a proper audio system in my home including a Pro-Ject turntable with a high grade cartridge. That gave me an opportunity to dust off my record collection that sat dormant for nearly 3 decades. This Heart album "Dreamboat Annie" was in my collection and I always liked the band. So I set the record on and started playing it while reading the lyrics etc. It took me few minutes to realize that this record is exceptionally well recorded because for 40 minutes all I heard was silk and honey coming from my speakers. Out of curiosity I started to look for the name of the producer of that record. The man's name is MIKE FLICKER, who also produced several well known bands of the day. Anyway, as it turned out, Mike Flicker was recognized for this particular album with a 1975 Canadian Juno Award for Producer of the Year. I am no musician, but my ears guided me well that evening one month ago. All the best Doug.

I still remember bringing home Heart’s Dreamboat Annie from the Jersey Shore boardwalk. The singer of my current favorite band was snapped wearing a Heart shirt the other day. They’re Band-Maid, a Japanese all-women progressive hard rock band you should check out. I’d recommend either Different or Puzzle. If you do live videos, try Manners/Black Hole. The former is groove-based classic rock and the latter is batsh*t crazy prog punk metal.

That Mini-Moog is a good way to test how low your speakers can go. After it initially comes in, it drops real low - but stays there for a few bars before slowly rising back up. If you can hear it the whole time rumbling down there, then you're good to go.
The reason I have this album is because of the radio edit that played during the day in my town back in the summer of '76. I was only 10 at time, but I used to record songs from the radio onto a portable cassette player that I'd lean against the speaker. My early foray into mixed tapes, as it were. The station would play the full-length track at night, but I was usually in bed by then. I tried calling the station during the day asking to play the long version (back when they took requests - even from a 10 year old boy). They played the song, but it was still the edited version. I was a bit sad by the time my mother came home from work, so she actually drove to a record store to get the single. Strange as it was, but while the radio had an edited version, the actual single you buy was always the full 5 and a half minute album cut. However, they were sold out at the time, so she bought the "Dreamboat Annie" album instead.
I kept that album in my collection when I started buying records myself 4 years later. Still have it today.
By the way, the U.S. release was in the summer of '76 when Mushroom couldn't get a U.S. based label to pick it up, so they opened up an L.A. office and released it themselves a year after the initial '75 Canadian release. That's why the U.S. copyright year on the album is 1976 even after Capitol bought the rights in '85 (along with the "Magazine" album) from the by-then bankrupt Mushroom Records. But now, most re-issues will say "1975, 1976".
Also, all the regular band members were not yet set when this album was recorded. They didn't have a set drummer yet, so Dave Wilson (no relation to the sisters) sat in on the "Magic Man" sessions. Howard Leese was a studio session player who worked for Can-Base Studios (later renamed Mushroom Studios) and Mushroom Records, so he was there for the whole album session - start to finish - but not officially a band member. He said himself that he preferred to be a studio rat than actually be in a band. He was the only real trained musician in the group who also studied the violin and music theory at L.A. City College. But Heart asked him to join once the album was done and they were touring to promote it. He relented and joined. Stayed with them until 1998. Drummer Michael Derosier was also only a session player and only appears on 2 of this album's tracks (and is NOT on either hit), but he too joined full-time upon completion of this record.

Doug, there were two classes of radio stations in the late 60's. AM which was pop music, news, talk, and sports; and then there was FM dominated by music mostly classical but Rock came on strong . Lots of Hippies running those stations, and they played stuff of the albums as opposed to singles off of 45s. So you heard the abridged version of the instrumental Bridge. The long and winding road to my answer. Lol. Damm hippies

I'd been aware of Barracuda and Crazy On You like forever and that album needed to be in my collection. I ended up finding a nice LP and it's gold front to back!!

An incredible all female metal band I discovered a year ago worth checking out is Lovebites. Check out their song Stand and Deliver off their latest album Judgement Day.

THis being the time period of groups producing albums, not just songs, often a piece would have to be edited down to the 3 1/2-minute time limit on most AM stations to fit in more commercials. Fortunately, FM radio was really picking up steam in the mid-70's and the AOR (Album-Oriented Rock) stations didn't give a hoot about time restrictions. My older brother and sister were both hooked on WLRS in Louisville in this time period and this is the only version of Magic Man I knew from being an impressionable 9-year-old in 1975. Also where I got my first taste of Yes, though I didn't catch on until high school and 90125.

that's the only version that I know. Wasn't even aware there was a radio edit version. That would be criminal to eliminate that synth section in the middle.

I'm just the opposite--don't really remember the short radio cut. Might have the first year or two after it came out, but ever since FM took over the stations I listened to played the album version and the short version was forgotten. This is still my favorite Heart song.

I've heard this song hundreds of times on DC area radio from the day it was released until today, and I've never heard a shortened version. The reason I know is because my favorite parts of the song are the solo guitar and synth sections, and I would be very unhappy if those were cut out!

Yeah, the square wave sound from the synth (my guess is that it's a MiniMoog) is a vintage 1970s synth sound.

Pretty sure WLS-Chicago always played the album cut in the 70s. The song I never heard the album cut on the radio was Blondie's Call Me; that was always the radio edit. Heart is a great band and a prominent part of my 70s childhood. Heartless by Heart is another banger, one of many.

Married to Nancy? No. They were a couple, and when Nancy decided she preferred Michael Derosier, that was the end of the relationship, with Roger trashing his guitar onstage and walking off in the middle of a gig. He was fired as a result.

Another great video, Doug. One thing (and I apologize if this was already pointed out): Mike Fisher is the brother of original lead guitarist Roger Fisher. Mike managed the band in the 70s and dated Ann. Roger dated Nancy. When those relationships fractured, the men were pushed out. Many fans never got over it, as the original band is considered the quintessential version of Heart, but stuff happens and people move on. To those fans still clamoring for a reunion, I’d ask how would you feel about working that closely with an ex from forty years ago? Not so appealing, is it?

Hi Doug I would love you to review Jeff Wayne’s War Of The Worlds It could be regarded a prog album. Don’t think it did anything in the US but was a top album here in the UK. It has Richard Burton narrating the album with words taken from the book by H G Wells. Some of the people taking part are Justin Hayward, Phill Lynott, Chris Thompson and David Essex. You might now the track Forever Autumn. It’s a fantastic album and I think people would appreciate it
