So hear me out brother, last night I woke up to my American Staffordshire Terrier going crazy at 3 AM. I found out there was a Mother opossum trapped and hiding from my dog. My dog got a grip of the mother and pulled her out and killed her. Two small babies fell out of her pouch, less than 7 inches. What should I do with the babies? We don't have animal services that cater to picking up the orphans, only to collect the dead carcass of the Mother. I feel really guilty that the babies were stripped from their mother in that way, but I guess that's the circle of life. What can I do brother?
I found a baby opossum last night in my pit bulls pin. I put her in a tree and now she follows me around. My cats will eat her if I let her run around. She won't leave me be. I honestly don't know what to do besides take care of her. 😮 Its like a duck.
If it is injured then take it to a rescue if you know where one is. If not then release it because momma owls or hawks need to feed their babies as well. It sounds harsh...but that is how nature works.
This is not great advice. A baby under 8” will NOT survive on its own most likely. I’m a certified wildlife rehabber. Every state has many. Just call us and we will assess the situation and do what is needed. We all volunteer and work for free. Costs you nothing to help the animal.
Please show me the peer reviewed research that says any opossum under 8 inches will NOT survive on its own. It is amazing that opossums ever survived for millions of years before human rehabbers came into existence the last half century. We have over 3 million people in our metropolitan area and maybe a dozen certified rehabilitators. None of whom have a big online presence and who can be found...or answer the phone when called. Only maybe 3 who have a staff and only maybe 2 of them that have been in operation for for than 3 years. I try to help people find them and list some on my website...but don't update it anymore because most only do it for a year or two.
@@TheTrapperGuy the standard for all wildlife organizations (as far as I’m aware of) all over the country determining a juvenile’s independence is 7”-8” nose to rump (not tail). Obviously these guys are not endangered in most locations but they provide a good service by eliminating problematic insects and such. I am aware we have a no shortage of possums, however we have less of them and many other animals every day thanks to humans. It’s the least we can do to try and help them as best as possible. Most of us rehabbers work for free and SHOULD be available 24-7 but we are few and far between. Hopefully your local peeps update their site. Have a good day.

I walked him over to the nearest treeline of the forest and plopped him down. I hope he can take care of those ticks on his own 🥺
My dog got one tonight. Now very unfortunately these are still pink and their eyes aren’t open. It’s too late for the wildlife service so I’m keeping them warm overnight and hopefully someone will call me back tomorrow. I always look in the backyard for critters before I let the dog out and just once I don’t and now I’ve got a problem on my hands 😢
Yes, this guy is absolutely right: you do not have to be a good samaritan and there is no law that obligates you to help anybody and do anything good. There are a number of things that you absolutely must do, for example: to pay your bills, follow traffic laws, or file your taxes etc. In other words, there is no law that says that to ignore problems and troubles of others is a crime. You can just walk away and leave anyone helpless to die since it's not your responsibility! As it was said at the Seinfeld final episode: "You don't have to help anybody - this is what this country is all about!"👎💪 Did I understand this video wrong?!🙄

They can have 13 babies so basically you had at least 3 adult female opossums. Leave one live trap underneath for a few days after it is all sealed up to make sure you have them all. I usually don't count the babies but I have caught 12 adults under a house before.
@@TheTrapperGuy ah geeez ... hope I don't have that many lol.
I've never seen the moms on camera until around 4am. I know I've got the access points closed, well the ones that "I know about" anyways. Friend of the family had to ruin my day and told me there could be a groundhog hole they're coming and going by.... yeeesh! No evidence of that anywhere in my yard but ... my woods are about 100 feet from my house.
Sure wish you were based in Virginia ... don't have much trust in the "wildlife/pest" control companies in my area considering they're are either breaking the law or straight lying to me about relocating them to another area which is illegal in Virginia unless you have a special permit and yeah, they've told me they dont.
I have 7 traps going with 3 cameras which I plan to leave in place for a week after catching the last one... if that ever happens.lolol
Thanks for the info.
@@notme2day If I were in Virginia I would have to follow the same laws. You only have to relocate them from underneath the house though. Just double check all possible entry areas. I doubt they are coming in from underground tunnels...but you will know for sure when you aren't catching any underneath.
@@TheTrapperGuy Problem is ... they did NOT want to release them back on my property. The rural area I live in doesn't have a lot of companies to call upon and until I totally fail or find a company willing to release on my property and check traps humanely and more often than *every* 4 days, I'll just keep plugging away.
If mom can't get out then I'm not sure how she's eating... the mouse under house hasn't been seen in 4 days soooo .... not a lot of dinner options under house lol.
Since she's not going into traps, which have a variety of fruits and veggies, so she's definitely eating something somewhere. Tonight special, I'm adding raw chicken wings, shrimp and canned tuna (now that the sardines are gone haha)... Hoping those options are a higher reward offering and more appealing web she cant refuse.
@@notme2day Opossums don't get trap shy. If you have a baited trap under there and nothing gets trapped...then she wasn't under there when you sealed it off. Unless she was ill or dying for some reason...then you will smell her.
What do you do when you find a dead mama possum on the side of the road with a couple babies on her?? can you please come pick them up?
I just found a baby opossum that’s not big enough to be on its own. I just don’t want to release it back outside because there’s dogs that have killed my chickens out there. The baby’s momma is under my house dead and I just can’t bare to let it back out by itself
You will have to find a rehabber in your area if you don't want to release it somewhere. If you cant find a local one on google then call your local veterinarians.
I juat found one about 5 inches lil cutie.
That is the size they go out on their own.
@@TheTrapperGuy i’m letting him go tonight. He seemed confused and scared right in the middle of the sidewalk, wasn’t moving , only open his mouth so i took him since there were also cats around and it was about 9pm too dangerous for him.
I just fed him some banana and yougurt, he liked it but didn’t eat that much.
@@tzukhi perfect plan!
@@TheTrapperGuy i hope so :)
Where should i put it to let him go? A tree? Over the grass? Should i leave food around him when i leave him so that he can eat while he adjust?
@@tzukhi In some dense bushes...either in or on the ground. Don't leave any food. Hunger will drive it to find cover and food source more quickly. Not to mention food might attract predators to eat him.
I just recently found a 5-6 inch baby possum right now and I already Bathed it and took off all the ticks now I just have it here
They can be released on their own at that size.
My one sister kids just found a baby during the day its skinny (like real skinny) we called a rescue just waiting its about the size in your video we think the mom died due to where it was found and how skinny it is but were doing everything we can to keep it alive until a rescue comes threw oh and it has spring water (its one spoiled little adorable fuzzy ball)
Just hoping it makes it til the resucue comes
Rescue will know what to do with it.
Super informative video! Also, you unintentionally sound like a South Park character and somehow it makes me like you even more.
Lol. Which one?
@@TheTrapperGuy thank you i just found a baby possum this morning. It was clinging to vine on my house. We had a big rain. Also lots of cats! So is it ok if i let it go in a different place or is it's mom looking for it?? Thank you for all the information.
@@rneedham667 check your local laws before releasing off the property. If you have to release it on property then release high up in thick bushes at night. If you found it alone with no mom in sight...then mom isn't looking for it. Your very welcome!
We have had them coming or falling from our attic where she gave birth this winter for two days now. My dogs killed two already and they have been just walking around in the daylight just aimlessly. My neighborhood is high traffic and suburban and I have 4 dogs. So we have been picking them up. This was yesterday and the nights have been 40 degrees. There is about 20 acres of woods Land behind the houses across the street. I am going to release them there so the dogs don’t kill them all. I live in Missouri- no one is going to care if I release them over there. It’s practically the same territory as this. Yet my question is -- is it not too cold as the nights are 40•?
@@alley9806 40 degrees is fine for them at night. Luckily opossums have their own fur coat! You might want to see about getting momma out of the attic and sealing up the spot where she got in.
I do not agree that you should leave it out in the wild It will surely be a meal for another predator. Take it in and raise it they only live a couple of years.
Most people don't know how to take care of them and they die anyhow. Leave it on its own to mature like nature intended. IMHO
You contact a rehabber. Never try to raise wildlife on your own. Only a rehabber knows the proper diet and care. Improper diet can cause deformities, poor health and death.
Trapper guy, I do NOT agree with you. If wildlife is in need you contact a rehabber. I shutter to think how those poor animals felt while you were dangling them. They actually looked dead.
😂❤
So hear me out brother, last night I woke up to my American Staffordshire Terrier going crazy at 3 AM. I found out there was a Mother opossum trapped and hiding from my dog. My dog got a grip of the mother and pulled her out and killed her. Two small babies fell out of her pouch, less than 7 inches. What should I do with the babies? We don't have animal services that cater to picking up the orphans, only to collect the dead carcass of the Mother. I feel really guilty that the babies were stripped from their mother in that way, but I guess that's the circle of life. What can I do brother?
If they are 6in long and hair and eyes open...then let go at night outside.
thanks for doing what you do, one trapper to another
Thank you as well!
I found a baby opossum last night in my pit bulls pin. I put her in a tree and now she follows me around. My cats will eat her if I let her run around. She won't leave me be. I honestly don't know what to do besides take care of her. 😮 Its like a duck.
U had me at Tampa Bay
Go Bucs!
What about a opossum that can't be released?
This video is cool but not for people who just came home with a possum off the highway and cannot physically return it.. I really need to know how to feed this possum and this video didn’t help
Mine wasn't even 3 weeks old :( he cant even walk
Yours made the most sense out of the few I have seen. Got a couple of these small ones. They are not staying in one spot almost like a teenager always moving especially at night. They seem to get into everything. I got a couple cats they know there out in garage but they seem to ignore them? Weird..
The cats probably eat out of same bowl as momma possum so they are familiar.
Dead ass I found one on the street and I tried giving it to it's momma but it chose me instead and burrowd in my hair now I'm stuck with it
My dog found one last night! I saved his life, well I hope. He had a bunch of ticks crawling on him and it was 1am, I didn’t want them getting on my dog or me.
Possums are protected here in Texas but all the wildlife and animal control services were closed so I couldn’t call anyone to figure out what to do. I walked him over to the nearest treeline of the forest and plopped him down. I hope he can take care of those ticks on his own 🥺
They are good self groomers
My dog got one tonight. Now very unfortunately these are still pink and their eyes aren’t open. It’s too late for the wildlife service so I’m keeping them warm overnight and hopefully someone will call me back tomorrow. I always look in the backyard for critters before I let the dog out and just once I don’t and now I’ve got a problem on my hands 😢
possoms actually EAT ticks
A possum was hit on the road and when my dad got it off the road he found a bunch of baby possums in her pouch
If you can find a rescue then take them to it...if not take them off the road and let nature take its course.
As it was said at the Seinfeld final episode: "You don't have to help anybody - this is what this country is all about!"👎💪
Did I understand this video wrong?!🙄
Anthropomorphize much? It was about accidentally doing harm while trying to do good. Made especially for people like you whose understanding of nature comes from Disney cartoons.

Thank you for your very valuable explanation, and estimation of my care, with which I saved hundreds of lives of birds (including rare predatory birds) and other animals. In our local wildlife center, where people know me well, I'm a long time member and volunteer supporter. For example, recently I saved 6 baby possums in my backyard (one female is still in my custody and going to be released soon, as she is already good to go). Well, to be honest I'm truly a fan of older cartoons. I have been doing this lifesaving mission for decades and will do so, as long as I live, whether you may like it or not. Well, obviously, not as you. Again, thank you for your, so much appreciated and so valuable advice. I think it would be a good idea if I will share your opinion with other volunteers of our wildlife center.

Call your local veterinarians and ask them who the local rescues are.
Imagine looking up how to help something and the video basically tells you to leave it to die
Does it really need help? Many times people want to help but actually hurt it.
do opossums get flees?
Yes
No their blood temp is too low to accommodate fleas. They can have the but they're temporary guests to the opposum such w ticks or lice.
Ended up rescuing one from the neighborhood cats who apparently killed its siblings…lots of cats now 6 pound lady
Neighbor should keep cats inside...before a coyote does to them what the cats did to opossums.
“Trap-spay-neuter-return” the outdoor Feral Cats. It’s the only humane solution to their population control.
Nothing humane about TNR. Most colonies have injured and diseased cats that suffer. They kill baby native wildlife. They will also have a painful and cruel death like most all wildlife.
HEY MOM😢
I really want one
I won't lie. They do make decent pets compared to other wildlife...but it still isn't a great idea.

What if the mother was hit by a car and 9 of them were crawling out of the mothers pouch???
Then they will probably need a rescue.
What kind of wildlife care video tells you to leave the baby for snake or owl prey? A creepy one whose mother should’ve treated him that way and kicked him out of the basement a long time ago.

@@TheTrapperGuy Great response! Great work w/ wildlife as well. We all need to remember we're not the only animals on this planet. It's a vast, multidimensional matrix of life.

@@jorgecastrot for the most part his video has correct information...but he is incorrect about the size of that opossum and nursing. How many times do you see a momma opossum with that many baby opossums that size riding on her back (they can't fit in the pouch at that size). When ever I see an opossum that size with a momma...it may be the only one or possible two. Usually 13 leave the pouch. The rest of them that size fell off momma and are on their own. They are weaned if they don't have a choice. If you find one the size of the one in his video in the wild...it will be on solid food...and certainly won't be as friendly as that one that was raised from the pouch by a human. Not every animal you see on the outside needs help. I have no problem with rescues...but many rescues will tell you themselves to leave baby animals alone. If you feel you have to rescue every baby animal you see...then clearly I am not the channel for you.
