As an animal loving child, I felt compelled to help any animal that looked like it needed help. During the years that I lived there, there were TWO different instances that I found baby possums & became their mother! They each bonded with me like this, & my mom & dad let me take care of them. I also intended to let them be rehabbed then go back to the wild, but no - neither one of them wanted anything to do with living outside! I loved my possum babies! And they loved me! I am 61 years old now & I still love animals & help them any time I see them in need. It was wonderful to see someone being a possum mommy like I once was!! God bless!!!

Saturday I found a small joey possum. it was attacked by a cat. I flushed the bite and larve out with antiseptic and gave a small dose of antibiotics mixed in water melon juice. Two days later he started eating. Last night he ate 2 ounces of hamburger, same thing this am and for lunch. He is doing great. He even had fruit fly larves in his eye sockets and had to flush it out with saline and treat with teramcin ointment. All infections are now healing
My dad found a baby possum in one of his tool drawers once. He fed it and took care of it without mom knowing, and now it's his best friend. Follows him like it’s a puppy.
Ngawwwww, absolutely Adorable story! Your dad sounds so sweet, looking after a baby possum is not easy at all and without your mum knowing lol, thats just too darn cute! What a lucky possum.
Since they are marsupials, their normal body temperature range makes it impossible for them to contract rabies. They only contract rabies if they are exposed while they are already running a fever. Unfortunately, this can happen when they eat inorganic materials that can cause intestinal blockages ie plastic, styrofoam, etc. making them sick. Their blood has unique properties which kills ticks moments after the possum is bitten. They also can survive venomous snake bites that could kill an adult human. They kind of pass out for 45 min or so once the venom takes affect and then kind of walk it off. Possums are awesome!!!
@@sheenahope3586 Yay!! Thanks for this generous share Sheena! 😀 Love learning this! On KQED or some other public radio station, there was someone talking about how 160 years ago, we cohabitated with animals even in cities. He said you’d see pigs, wild dogs, coyotes, chickens, and more just walking around minding there business, and is minding our. On another occasion I heard there were hundreds of 🐳 whales living living off the coast of central CA. One day there will be balance again, we may not love to see it, but life is too intentional to let a few billion humans take it down.
@Michele S. yah actually I do not agree with you totally, but people these days do go to either extreme and away from reality. finding another species to replace love from your own is a social psychiatric disease that will increase as times come and loneliness increases globally. but at the same time, animals do have emotions, and all animals are not exactly at the same level of complex emotions and intellect, for example, like chimpanzee is way more developed than a possum, but people, in general, don't like to think complexly, for them it is in white and black. either they hate something or love something to the hilt. there is no middle way. though reality always lies in between. in shades of grey. IMHO.
You're right Fernando he is an eraser for sadness for some people doctor Love of Animals stop you from connecting with Humanity? It's the opposite I think astride lonely person can meet people through an animal like walking a dog arguing School shows with your wonderful rodent or lizard or Hedgehog. Watching Butter's sweetness made me melt. He is so darn adorable. I just loved they way he hugged his mom's feet with such affection. I think it would be nice if the mom could adopt another domesticated possum so Butter has a same-species friend to be a possum with. However, that might not be essential. Having a life filled with love is the most important thing.
Reminds me of a humorous story, about a man who went into the African bush to take photos of lions and came back with one. He was told it's a lion, he's a wild animal, you better hope he leaves. It didn't, as the story writer explained= "Why would he, with three meals a day all found?"
Opossums may live up to 8 - 10 years in captivity. This woman loves this animal. She did save him. He would have perished without her intervention. Whatever your opinion is, so be it. She loves him and he obviously loves her. Little cuddle bug. Thank you for saving him. ☺❤

@@nickolifax703 yes, this is what I've heard too. 8 to 10 years would really be remarkable. They have unusually short lives, but are typically healthy for most of it. They are immune to rabies for the most part and never get cancer.
I was homeless for 9 years, and after that long the outside creatures start to recognize you. Well, possums started getting comfortable with me and playing peek-a-boo when I'd go through alleys. They'd also wait for me and pop out when I'd come walking down my normal path.
I'm glad you're no longer homeless and hope you're doing good! I never know what to do in that situation, I wish or system didn't fail people and animals. Do you ever go back to visit them? That would be a hard thing to leave behind.
It's actually not super uncommon for animals that get a "soft release" (where they can either go into the wild or stay home) to choose to be domesticated or come back and visit their rescuers. Animals love for the ones that care for them never fades ❤
Butter’s slubbing is so cute. Like cats, it's how they scent mark you and like she mentioned show affection. It's just the super silly and sweet way of saying “You’re mine and I love you.” Good on you for letting them choose, I'm sure he would've enjoyed being wild, but to him his home is with the woman who saved him and that's the sweetest thing in the world. I'd love it if she could make him an ambassador or education animal, teach kiddos how good possums actually are.
Oppossums edit (look like) LARGE rodents/rats, like big (i know theyre marsupials). I driving to work one morning, early because it's a 7 AM shift, and I kid you not I saw one walking on a sidewalk while I was driving down the road. I was suddenly reminded of the ROUSs from Princess bride. They're not that big, but still pretty damn big.
I wintered 6 baby possums for a rehab friend of mine and it was the most special rewarding thing ever in my life. They are very clean animals, they do not go to the bathroom in their living space, they eat ticks and other pests, they are just wonderful and very misunderstood
That's amazing. God bless you 🙏. I looked outside one night and my cats were on the porch watching possum eating their food. I only seen him once but I hope he still comes and eats in middle of the night. The Cats don't mind 😂
I wouldn't consider Butter to be like other average Opossums. She got lucky as they can get quite aggressive in the wild when cornered or threatened. You wouldn't want those teeth and claws ripping into you.
@@dan_hitchman007 That is complete and utter horseshit lol. Anyone who knows a single fact about opossums know they are docile and nonaggressive. Even if threatened, they are most likely to hiss and then play dead.
@@dan_hitchman007 that's BS. They aren't "quite aggressive". A dog is more likely to bit at you than a opossum. The opposum will run away first. If it can't, it will freeze, and if it thinks playing dead will work, it will do that. But if YOU'RE aggressive, he will bare his teeth and hiss to scare you away, and then run if he can. You have to really push an oppossum to get it to attack, and it will be your aggression, not his, that started the fight. Think of all the animals - even moths - that are equipped with characteristics that scare other animals away, yet are totally harmless. Learn about what you fear. Usually you'll find out you're fearing someone or something that is less dangerous than you.
I live in Houston, these guys use the fences in the neighborhood as a freeway system. They are peaceful animals and it's really cool to see the mothers with all the kiddies onboard like mom's a school bus.
@@ellenandwillhernandez4298 They are very fearful because people freak out when they see them. They are wonderful animals, that eat ticks and can’t catch rabies. Several would come to my front porch to eat cat food, one day I spotted a baby with his feet in my coffee cup and eating the berry Newtons that I had left outside, needless to say, I left 2 cookies out every night after that for the visitors. @@zlotywest860 Opossums are actually very docile creatures, they just act though because that’s what it takes to survive. Obviously that doesn’t mean too much, since any animal can snap in the right circumstances, but since they’re naturally calm it’s a little less likely he’ll become aggressive unless it’s due to an extremely stressful situation (which if they care for him well, he shouldn’t ever be in) or possibly due to old age / illness.

Definitely, all of them. Every single one of them. Nutritional deficiencies aren't the issue, emotions/feelings and compassion deficiencies are, which also initiate nutritional deficiencies, understandably.
His 'slubbing' reminds me of how cats show affection - and mark you as part of their territory. Is this also what opossums do, in situations like this? He behaves like a cat - love the way he draws his fleece blanket into his den! Cuteness overload ❤️
My son rescued a baby opposum after an owl attack killed it's mom. That was the most loving pet, he purred when petted & was paper trained in no time, then moved outside to live under the shed. Great little guy.

Has the potential to yes. Always irks me when people imply natural is always best. Natural living humans died in their 30s when their teeth complications killed them, if they were lucky to make that age. Wild wolves live 5 -8yrs if they're lucky and so on. Nature is brutal, it needs to be respected not romanticised.
@@wd25a Ye, I agree with you, nature can be very brutal, but we need it "sadly" despite it's brutality in our eyes, but some animals don't do well in captivity and we need all ranges of plant like and animals in the wild for the planet to be in a (I guess you could say) good condition. Plants; all ranges of prey and apex predators are all needed for balance. Ii will say even tho I think nature is brutal if someone says they "saved" an animal from a predator (unless it's something like a cat etc) or someone says they found an injured or sick animal, if it's native I'm the type to say to just release it as to let nature take its course or if it's not native give it to a rehabilitator who can properly deal with it and in most cases probably has more experience or at least more resources than a lot of people may have, yk? Just my thought on it, I rabbled, but pretty much despite how brutal nature is, that brutality is kind of needed 🤷♀️
Wow, thank you for opening my eyes to this. If I have to be honest, previous to this video, I was afraid of them, even though I’m 54 years old, all I’ve ever heard in my entire life is how dangerous they are, how vicious they can be, how they destroy everything in sight and carry disease. Your video has completely changed my entire perspective on this topic, and now I want one! I had no idea they could be that loving and affectionate! More people need to post videos like this to take away the ignorance, many of us, especially me, have regarding wild animals, especially those that many people consider to be a pest or a danger. Looking at the images, especially when he was young, it’s absolutely adorable, you put them in an entirely different light, and I thank you for it!
Humans fear what they don't know. Once you take your time to know an animal, you will anderstand how they really are. We are taught to fear the unknown, to not trust, to kill what MIGHT be dangerous, even if it isn't. Possums, rats, pigeons, crows, mice: they are not pests, they are intelligent, smart and affectionate if they bond with you. One just needs to give them a chance and truly, really look at them.
Oh my gosh i loved your comment! Thank you so much for being open to it and for even watchin a video LIKE this. I try to teach my kids, every animal (hell to me, even every bug too) is precious and that all the negative stigmas they may have are almost always only out of their fear, their instinct, or in the predators category, their nature. Of course disease is very real and truly should be avoided but every animal deserves kindness from every human. And being scared of animals is totally natural but they're really all just here trying to survive like we are. None of them have capacity for malice. Youre so sweet for seeing this the way you did.
Even wild opossums are nothing like you described. They're certainly not vicious and dangerous. In hours of watching (both in person and on camera) opossums interacting with each other, raccoons, skunks and cats I've seen an opossum being aggressive _once._ That was one adult male chasing away another from a pile of food. They're actually quite shy around not just people but other animals and have very laid back, almost sweet, personalities. The disease thing is actually kind of funny because think about it...have you ever heard of a rabid opossum? No, because their body temperature is too low for not just rabies but most disease common to wild animals. I think their reputation is entirely based on people thinking they're ugly and scary looking. I agree that they aren't as cute as raccoon and skunks but they grow on you once you get to know them. They're very much an "it's what's on the inside that counts" animal. Once you see how sweet they are they suddenly look a lot cuter.
I believe that one of the reasons Possums are widely considered pests is because they somewhat resemble rodents like rats and mice. Not only are they not rodents, they are also harmless to people and most pets. They actually help reduce populations of some pests! Hopefully the stigma will disappear as people become more educted!
They are the Armageddon of my least favorite parasite. They devour ticks in droves. That alone makes them worthy of our love, domestication, and all the peanut butter and bananas they could ever ask for.
100% they all are so worthy of love, respect and peace. Esp these babies. They're one of my favorite animals. And they're good to keep around. They eat ticks and other bugs. Their body temp is so low they can't catch rabies. They don't even attack. They run away or play dead lol

I saw a mother opossum that had been hit by a car and noticed that 4 babies were still clinging to her. I raced home and got a small box to put them in. There were three gray and one brown. I brought them home and we raised them, feeding them an egg and milk mixture, then rubbing their tummies so they could digest it properly. After a few weeks they graduated to cat food. The vet said that once they start eating meat they can go back into the wild. So, we released them back into the wild never to be seen by us again. We found them wild, they stayed wild, and they went back to the wild. Just a unique story I wanted to share. 🤗

When we first moved here I went to bring out the trash, and startled one in our breezeway. The poor little guy wobbles a few feet, and fell over. Stayed like that about a half-hour. Then got up and went on its way.
I lived in a trailer for a while. I had to go next door to go to the bathroom. Which was interesting in the middle of the night. One night, I went out onto our walkway, practically sleepwalking. I tripped over a possum. He shrieked, I shrieked, then we both went running in the opposite directions.
Rabbits would be introverts too. They're very loyal, active and loving around people they trust, but shy around people they don't know. And they don't like unknown rabbits entering their territory. They're my favourite animal 😍
I always thought Opossums were cute, even when everyone thinks they're ugly and nasty. I've saved a few in my lifetime- never had one as a pet mind you, but they sometimes get stuck in large dumpsters and such looking for food. They can look super mean, but when they play dead they are basically harmless.
Opossums are fine in daylight. It's when you are somewhere without light and you hear a noise. Flash a light two glowing eyes or a pair of big eye with little eyes. One night I saw a glint of red eye and almost thought it was a huge spider until I counted them, four to many.

Aww, God bless him

He’s adorably homely. PSA: possums eat thousands of ticks a year as they’re very fastidious about grooming. Be kind to them
Amazing!! Love them
Since they are marsupials, their normal body temperature range makes it impossible for them to contract rabies.

@Michele S. yah actually I do not agree with you totally, but people these days do go to either extreme and away from reality. finding another species to replace love from your own is a social psychiatric disease that will increase as times come and loneliness increases globally. but at the same time, animals do have emotions, and all animals are not exactly at the same level of complex emotions and intellect, for example, like chimpanzee is way more developed than a possum, but people, in general, don't like to think complexly, for them it is in white and black. either they hate something or love something to the hilt. there is no middle way. though reality always lies in between. in shades of grey. @@dan_hitchman007 That is complete and utter horseshit lol. Anyone who knows a single fact about opossums know they are docile and nonaggressive. Even if threatened, they are most likely to hiss and then play dead.
Baby Animals Will Make You Fall In Love
@@dan_hitchman007 that's BS. They aren't "quite aggressive". A dog is more likely to bit at you than a opossum. The opposum will run away first. If it can't, it will freeze, and if it thinks playing dead will work, it will do that. But if YOU'RE aggressive, he will bare his teeth and hiss to scare you away, and then run if he can. You have to really push an oppossum to get it to attack, and it will be your aggression, not his, that started the fight.

@@wd25a i agree with you but at the same time people want to help we don’t want an animal to suffer. It’s hard i guess
Unless peta comes to euthanize your pets

Once had a friend cockroach. No kidding. Really changed my perception about everything.@@cheap-assrecipes5993
Youre so sweet for seeing this the way you did.
yeah it’s crazy, they actually physically can’t have most diseases, due to their low body temperature.
I always thought they were rodents..so your saying that I’m wrong?

So glad she didn't dump him in the woods like rehabbers do. Domesticated wild animals make incredible pets.
Yea they got my baby because of my ex landlord and turned her loose In the wild on a freezing night because he could get a hold of me because they gave the wrong number purposely they new the right number and he said he was gonna bring her to me he new she was was not able to be in the wild but because of them he had no choice and when I finally found out how to get a hold of them he called me back the next day. And came and told me were he let her go and told me if I find her I need to get my permit for two dollars but she never md it very fr that night she was crippled in her back legs so she went slow and would rest and she froze to death that night I lost it when I found my baby girl like that I felt like I failed her because they locked me out of my home and took them while I was gone is was so cruel and so wrong

That opossum is one lucky animal- he's got a life of royalty there!!
The only thing bad about them is they don't live that long 💔In the wild about 2 years and taken care of as a pet 4 years some times a little longer.

This is so amazing. I'm seen opossums (like when I have gone to feed feral cats) and considered them wild, but he seems so tame based on all the love and support you have given him. I love this video and how you break down the wild vs. feral conflict..... I'm not crying, you're crying.

*That is an important message that "aNiMaL aCtIvIsTs" fail to comprehend. It doean't matter if the animal belongs in the wild or not. It doesn't matter if you have a diplome or degree in wildlife. The ONLY thing that matters is that the animal is happy and cared for its entire life.*

I am so happy that you saved Butter. He is obviously very content, healthy, and he has a very good life. Butter gets oodles of love and affection, and he gets taken outside in the fresh air, to explore the world.
I could think of worse things to be stuck with than this adorable little love bug. I'm happy you two found each other.❤️❤️
I saw a mother opossum that had been hit by a car and noticed that 4 babies were still clinging to her. 🤗

I don't think them ugly. But I am scared of them.
I have been feeding an opossum for about 6months now and he loves grapes apples and bananas. He usually arrives for chow about 11 o’clock every evening.I enjoy taking care of him even through the winter months and hope he will live a long happy live.
Only about three years unfortunately. However, maybe longer if they are in a domestic circumstance.
If an introvert is an animal it will be an Opossum, plays dead when they're around people they don't know but affectionate to those who they are comfortable with
Maybe that's why I love them so much... They are my spirit animal

@@danwatkins3044 What a way to ruin the mood
Real nice thing to say ruin the good possum vibe!!!
Lmao! That video led me here
I always thought Opossums were cute, even when everyone thinks they're ugly and nasty. I've saved a few in my lifetime- never had one as a pet mind you, but they sometimes get stuck in large dumpsters and such looking for food. They can look super mean, but when they play dead they are basically harmless.
I don't think they are cute as adults but that baby would have imprinted on me and I on him.
I like them too. I also think bats are cute! I prefer them to mice and rats for sure.
I love them.
Opossums are fine in daylight. It's when you are somewhere without light and you hear a noise. Flash a light two glowing eyes or a pair of big eye with little eyes. One night I saw a glint of red eye and almost thought it was a huge spider until I counted them, four to many.
yeah, I also am weird in that I like possums and think they're cute.
there's not many of us, buy you're not alone.
Obviously, he is A VERY GOOD BOY And he is lucky to have such a caring mom
Sometimes, they JUST like being with us humans better.
Yes, quite. Give the animal the option to be wild, but accept that the animal might say, "Nope, I'm staying."
Sad some of rehabilitated animals that were let go into their habitat would go depressed and miss their humans…
That's bcz most animals from a young age are kept by humans and not scared of humans, So it's not possible for them to in the wild. otherwise, they are just fine without us.
@@zenmaster8826 Poor little things. This is why I like the idea of gradual releases. It's easier to tell if the animal is ready.
If little buddy Butter chooses to stay with his willing human friend, then why not. I couldn't close the door on the little fella.
