The Black police man character: Victor Willis wrote all of the songs. He once dated Phylicia Rashad for a brief time. All of the group members did drugs back then but Victor eventually became a notorious crack fiend and was at one time kicked out of the group and lost the house that he owned on Haight Street. All of the other members, unlike Victor, were gay and this song was in reference to the YMCA being at that time a place where gay men would hook up on the low. In the street scene you see the sign of a gay bar called "The Ramrod" that used to be there in NYC. When I lived in SF, Victor lived down the block from me. Another video: "NAVY" was more identifiably "gay" than "YMCA" and is hilarious! Victors songs were a spoof of masculine Gay men. Another hit: "Macho Man". Victor has in recent years cleaned up his drug habit and he continues to own the royalty rights to his music.

It is genuinely a good message, though. A lot of young people, in particular gay people, who had been kicked out of their homes and excluded from society, needed to hear a message of hope, that there was a place they could go where they would be accepted. Having it specifically be the YMCA in the song was perhaps a bit specific, but probably reflected the local reality, and it sort of stands in more broadly as a metaphor for the then-underground gay community. Since there was a lot of overlap with the disco scene, it made a lot of sense to put that message out in a corny disco song with a lot of obvious subtext, a catchy chorus and built-in dance moves. The message, broadly, is "your life is not over".

@TwinsthenewTrend... Fred said, "I definitely understand what he's talking about..." 😉
    OMGoodness, so sweet.
He's (Fred) not wrong, though. 🤔🙄 The WORDS THEMSELVES don't match the historical context so it's more like an inside joke that all of us old folk are in on...and let's face it, that's what the Y WAS supposed to symbolize, all the opportunities the song is talking about. The fact that it turned into a Mecca of gay cruising subculture is just incidental and now it's an interesting dichotomy...and HILARIOUS. Since the twins are always asking to be schooled on what the artist is talking about, in this case they're not wrong because that's exactly what he is talking about, except for the fact that the rest of us really know 'what's up' and can fill in the blanks. That's why this is an important discussion. It's like a history lesson. 👍🏼

They also grew up at a different time than we did. This video was as much a part of what they were talking about at the song was and now, people just dress that way. Now, it's not even noticeable whereas then, they stood out as part of a subculture. I love these two; they remind me of how young and naive I was, too. And I'll still dance to this song, anytime!

My brother interviewed a couple of these guys when he did his master's degree. They talked about the big anti-disco backlash (I remember disco record burnings, even). Some of the backlash was against the slick production and simple beats--we got punk as a result, but some of it was against the women, people of color, and gay artists that were embraced by disco. I still have a few of my brother's signed Village People records. A bunch of talented session musicians (including brass instrumentalists) suddenly lost their jobs when disco died.

The YMCA was a place where gay men could meet other gay men in a safe place. This song was so much more than a fun song to dance to . It was really important for the gay community. :)

I am torn between being totally charmed at the fresh unburdened perspective on this song (being able to enjoy it just for its simplicity and seemingly straightforward message in today's time), and being sad about the context of the controversy and uproar and history behind the song when it originally came out, when this reaction is what it should have been about in the first place. But I am so happy that this is what people think now when they hear the song!
I really encourage you gents to look up why this song was such a big deal when it first came out and the impact it had on the LGBTIQ community and society at the time. Thank you for doing what you do, it may seem to many people to be just a frivolous silly fun thing to listen to a bunch of old music but this is more than that. Music is such a massive part of telling human history, and bringing these songs up in a new context gives so many a chance to not just listen to things they've never heard before, but to explore that history behind what these songs meant at the time, and how we've changed, and recognising that songs like these were a huge catalyst for that change.

Fun Fact: Freddie Mercury based his mustache from the motor cycle guy with the mustache from the Village People!!

and where did you hear this ? Freddie's mustache is called a
chevron moustache , a lot of gay men had it in the late 70s ,
it was like a coming out symbol.

Raised in the 60s and most of the 70s by a single parent, the ymca gave me sports and after school activity. For some odd reason one was archery lol.

This one seems unfair. Unless you’re of a certain age, you don’t even know what the YMCA was! It was not always the community pool. 😂😂😂

Exactly. At one time you could actually rent a room at the YMCA's in the cities. Single men, low on cash. Lot of action besides just the exercise. 😂

Just love you boys. I'm a 67 year old mom who raised my son on seventies music. Have a go at Moody Blues, Pink Floyd and Emerson Lake and Palmer.

YMCA stands for Young Men’s Christian Association. It was originally started to have a safe and nice place for men to go and hang out, have a good meal, take a shower, play games, have different activities going on etc. and also have resources for jobs etc. I think they originally provided lodging & may still today...not sure.
There’s also the YWCA, which stands for Young Women’s Christian association that has the same ideas and goals to provide a safe haven and nice place to go to hang out etc.
I enjoy watching your reaction videos. God bless you both!
