He was using some drugs- a song he wrote called "Mary Jane" was about his love for marijuana. It's in the movie Friday, when Chris Tucker (Smokey) was having fun while smoking weed on Craig's (Ice Cube) porch. 6. He spent some time in jail. Around 5 years. Rick James passed away on August 6, 2004 from a heart attack due to the drugs that were in his system over the years.
You left out why he was in jail, In 1991, James and his girlfriend Tanya Hijazi were accused of holding 24-year-old Frances Alley hostage for up to six days, tying her up, forcing her to perform sexual acts, and burning her legs and abdomen with the hot end of a crack cocaine pipe during a week-long cocaine binge. In 1993, while out on bail for that incident, James, under the influence of cocaine, assaulted music executive Mary Sauger at the St. James Club and Hotel in West Hollywood. Sauger claims she met James and Hijazi for a business meeting, but said the two then kidnapped and beat her over a 20-hour period. He was sentenced to 5 years in 1994 but only served 2. That was such a sad period in his life; the pain he caused those woman and others who grew up loving his funk now having to compartmentalize his music which lit up our generation from the damage he caused those woman due to his drug use.

Ok I’m dying at their reaction to Rick James. ‘He looks like a pimp!” He says. And and nearly falling out my chair with laughter, I’m thinking “Yep!” But They’re not saying anything that Slick Rick himself didn’t boast about in various media outlets when he was living. Carry on! Love these two young men! 😂😂😂
I love them also, but I’m amazed that there are so many songs they haven’t listened to. My twin boys have musical tastes that are extreme opposite. One is a metal head the other is into rap... but they both dabble all over the music spectrum from old country to 70s. These boys have been sheltered musically lol. Still love their reactions. ❤️
Stephanie West I thought the same thing. But the I remembered they mention in one the videos that they grew up only listening to gospel music and rap So it sound like they ay have grew up listening to gospel in their home. And perhaps as they got older (like in their teens), they listened to rap. I do identify, because when I grew up, all my mom played was jazz and the blues. Then when I was a young teenager, I used to sleep over at my girlfriends house, and we’d listen to R&B on the radio. then when my parents moved from Compton, CA to Anaheim, CA (from going to school with majority black school to all white school), guess what I started listening to? Rock, Heavy Metal and Surfer (Beach Boys) music! As I grew into adulthood, I started listening to all kinds of music, including Country and Classical. Now in addition to loving so many genres of music, my favorite is gospel and Contemporary Christian! ❤️
Jaquetta Akins that’s what I kind of figured. It’s funny when my son’s Hispanic friend and him start listening to 50s Doo-Wops after hitting me with 2 hours of rap. lol. Speaking of Doo-Wop music of the 50’s maybe we need to request them to critique someone of that era.

I watched this thinking, "How can they not know who Rick James is? Didn't they see those Dave Chappelle skits?" Then I remembered that Chappelle's Show has been off the air for 16 years and I felt very, very old.
Hard to pick just one! I love all of those! Can't go wrong with any of those! Need to just do a set! I am 63 and turned my son on to them.... along with classic rock of course. he has the "funk" gene jike his mama! When picking out songs for the DJ to play at his wedding reception he wanted the dance music from my time
Awww yes!! I'm here early!!! I can't wait for this one! If you guys want a laugh, watch any of the Chapelle Show skits with Rick James telling stories. They're hilarious!
Rick James was dope! And I hear he was quite freaky. LOL!! Short story: years ago I was at a concert at Radio City Music Hall in NYC; I was sitting in an upper balcony. To my surprise Rick James was sitting behind me and someone pointed out he was there and the women went wild. It got so bad that his people had to pick him up and carry him out of that balcony. I shall never forget it. May Rick rest in Paradise.
My husband saw Rick James sing the Star Spangled Banner, in the late 90s, at a Texas Rangers game. He was gobsmacked by how great a rendition it was. And: Rick James and Neil Young were in a band together before they both hit it big.
They are the best. I got to meet Micki Free last year and so also want to add they should watch the one with Charlie Murphy and Prince. Micki said that story is exactly as it happened
No and they played it on here a few weeks ago. They also have played Under Pressure by Queen and Ice Ice Baby by Vanilla Ice and didn't realize it either.
Guys please listen to Moody blues songs like "nights in white satin" and "im just a singer in a rock and roll band" and " malencholy man". "I could not love u more" by beegees is amazing. King crimson songs are amazing as well.
I would have loved to take y'all to some concerts l went to. Getting a backstage pass was wild. Your first time will be like going into adult entertainment for the first time, Shocking!
The Chappelle Show was in 2004 and these young twins were probably born that year or later; so it's very likely they don't remember any of those skits. LOL. and MC Hammer hit the scene way back in the early 90's. You're too funny.
@@FrankBishop You are correct. Comedy Central does not rerun the show. The twins would have to buy the DVDs or pay for the episodes on Hulu. This is why they don't remember the show.
I think the flood of new beats and melodies is too overwhelming for them to have made the connection. But I was also hoping they would have caught it :(
They're just not even familiar with the original artist and sampled from but how did Hammer get away from not paying Rick James yet Vanilla Ice got sued by David Bowie??

Y'all are just so refreshing!! I am a 60 yr old white woman, but you two have brought the music I listened to back in the day BACK into my life. Sometimes, while listening and watching I've actually had an emotional moment that included tears because the song you were playing brought back significant people who were in my life and significant times when my life may have been falling apart back then or even looking up. When you get a lot older, the same will happen to you. Music is a playlist of our lives......everything we did while those songs were hits comes flooding back like it was yesterday and all it takes is a song you are playing & there I am, 40 yrs ago, happy, sad and even grief at missing those who are no longer with me. I notice there are a lot of people out there doing what you are doing & I keep scrolling because I've seen the best & the freshest.....the first.....the TWINS. There are many who are copy cats. They are trying to ride your coat tails!! I am disabled with a 29 yr old disabled son and you bring so much to us that has made our days brighter, & sometimes has us cracking up! PLEASE KEEP DOING WHAT YOU ARE DOING!!! IT GOES BEYOND SAMPLING MUSIC.....IT PUTS A SMILE ON OUR FACES, IT BRINGS A TREASURED MEMORY BACK TO OUR MINDS & HEARTS WHEN SOMETIMES MY MEMORY IS NOT SO GOOD ANYMORE. IT'S NOT JUST ENTERTAINMENT......YOU HELP RESTORE WHAT MANY OF US HAVE LOST SIMPLY THRU THE YEARS THAT HAVE GONE BY. YOU BOTH ARE A BLESSING. I WISH & PRAY THAT YOUR LIVES PROSPER FAR BEYOND YOUR EXPECTATIONS AND I KNOW IF Y'ALL HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH IT, THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT WILL HAPPEN. GOD BLESS YOU BOTH. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!

That cracked me up too!!
I love these two they had me on the floor with that to.
Seriously, you have to listen to his girlfriend at that time Teena Marie. Preferably the first 3 albums. And their duet Fire and Desire is fantastic.
qbear17 I second that!
Loooooved Teena Marie! RIP
Fire and desire for sure!!!
I agree 💯. They need to check out that song

There is a video on you tube of sir-mix-a-lot performing baby got back to a full symphony orchestra!!!! IMPRESSIVE
I watched this thinking, "How can they not know who Rick James is? Didn't they see those Dave Chappelle skits?" Then I remembered that Chappelle's Show has been off the air for 16 years and I felt very, very old.
Thank y'all for finally listen to this for me . This was the jam back in the 80's
Got to check out The Gap Band... " Burn Rubber"

Awww yes!! I'm here early!!! I can't wait for this one!
If you guys want a laugh, watch any of the Chapelle Show skits with Rick James telling stories. They're hilarious!
“I’m Rick James bitch!” 😆
Came here to say this, I can’t believe they’ve never heard anyone say “I’m Rick James Bitch!” 😂😂
Charlie Murphy!!
Agreed! 😂
And this is where “F yo couch!” Came from. 🤣
Unfortunately for Rick, more cokesman than cocksman.... Much as I enjoyed hanging out with him, that was the reality.
My husband saw Rick James sing the Star Spangled Banner, in the late 90s, at a Texas Rangers game. He was gobsmacked by how great a rendition it was.
And:
Rick James and Neil Young were in a band together before they both hit it big.
WOW I definitely haven't heard that
That's an odd couple
He’s a BANGER!! Super Freak is the ULTIMATE PARTY SONG!!!
Rick James is just one of the reasons, I love being black.
I love ❤️ that! He was the coolest.
Meee too bro and i was born🎼🎤🎺💫🔥🍷🍺🍻🎻🎹🎶🎵🎼white 1972

RICK JAMES...'GIVE IT TO ME BABY"
Definitely react to Charlie Murphy's skits about Rick James.
Please!
Yesssss!!! I was thinking the same thing. Hilarious!
They are the best. I got to meet Micki Free last year and so also want to add they should watch the one with Charlie Murphy and Prince. Micki said that story is exactly as it happened
.....those skits were hilarious!
Omg yes.
Did you know that MC Hammer's "Can't Touch This" sampled this track?
No and they played it on here a few weeks ago. They also have played Under Pressure by Queen and Ice Ice Baby by Vanilla Ice and didn't realize it either.
I didnt hear it. I missed something??
@@i.m.7710 Why don't you listen to BOTH tracks and get back to us.
@@tmofog right?! Literally the first few seconds is you cant touch this. I started singing it as soon as it started even tho it was the wrong song 😂
Yes definitely I kept singing can’t touch this
I remember walking around the house singing this at 7 years old (not having a clue what it meant) and my mom freaking out 😂
The Chapelle Show has a great bit about Rick James, as told by Charlie Murphy

This song never gets old and nobody can sit still when this jam on!
Any of the 80’s babies singing “can’t touch this?” No... Just me??? 🤦🏾♀️🤣😂🤣😂
You guys ought to go back and rewatch MC Hammer's "Can't Touch This" now that you know where the beat was sampled from!
Kristin Pingree I’m 40... I know both songs... I was just saying that every time I hear “super freak” I also sing “can’t touch this” 🤣😂🤣
Crotique’s C - Sorry, I didn't mean you.😁 I meant the twins.😁
90s baby singing it lol
Yep, I was.
You remember, "Can't Touch This" by Hammer? He sampled this song. Also, you remember "I'm Rick James, bitch!" from Chappelle Show?
The Chappelle Show was in 2004 and these young twins were probably born that year or later; so it's very likely they don't remember any of those skits. LOL. and MC Hammer hit the scene way back in the early 90's. You're too funny.
@@dunhill1 Since they don't show reruns all the time
@@dunhill1 Also, they did a reaction to Hammer...that's why I mentioned him.
@@FrankBishop You are correct. Comedy Central does not rerun the show. The twins would have to buy the DVDs or pay for the episodes on Hulu. This is why they don't remember the show.
@@dunhill1 Comedy Central DOES replay CS...it was on just a few days ago.
They reviewed MC Hammer’s “Can’t Touch This” and didn’t recognize the tune he pulled from Super Freak?
I think the flood of new beats and melodies is too overwhelming for them to have made the connection. But I was also hoping they would have caught it :(
Same thing happened when they watched “Ice Ice Baby”, then “Under Pressure”.
Probably the two most iconic uses of sampling an existing song
They're just not even familiar with the original artist and sampled from but how did Hammer get away from not paying Rick James yet Vanilla Ice got sued by David Bowie??
@@conniemoore1786 Hammer told you how in 🎶Pray🎶. 😉
@@conniemoore1786 Rick James is actually credited as a writer on can’t touch this, meaning he made a shitload of royalties from it lol
Guys, I would love to see your reaction to Roberta Flack’s stunningly beautiful rendition of ‘The first time ever I saw your face’ 🥰
Due to work and life lately have been missing my Twins firsts.
This one got my hubby’s interest Laughing and loving that’s saying something!! This is great!!

You should listen to "Welcome to the Jungle" by Guns N' Roses.
NO.
I have a concert verison of "Welcome to the Jungle" on my ipod mini that is better than the recorded one!
Man I wish I had friends like you with great taste for music, and I'm around your age!

For the record, Rick James came before M.C. Hammer. Hammer pilfered this tune.

Rick James was one of the original players!! All his music is bomb!! He was a crazy crazy guy! But cool AF!🔥🔥🔥🔥💥💥💥💯
Rick James was a big part of my teenage years, love him
