My male ball is about 20 years old and I’ve NEVER used a humidity box for him. I saw this video and got really excited to try it but didn’t think he’d really “figure it out”. After 3 days he finally did and hopefully this cures all his inconsistent sheds. I’m super excited! Thanks for the genius idea! 😁

I got my first Ball Python 4 days ago and he was having a problem shedding.
I made a humidity box and he shed immediately.
    Cheers.

Emily, I watched this video last week for the first time. My BP was in blue and her first and only shed with me was a mess...pieces everywhere. It "exploded". So I followed your video and made her a humidity box that same day and this morning I walked in to check on her --- and we had a perfect shed in one piece. From her eye caps to the tip of her tail!!!! I've been working so hard to keep the humidity up in the ENTIRE tank and your video helped remove so much stress from me...because I was failing. To have this perfect shed was so exciting. Thank you for all your great videos, excellent content, amazing information...and educating ME and so many others in such a fun, no nonsense, and relative way. I SO appreciate you and Ed!

@@fionashepley478 Normally, I use a combination of 50% ZooMed Forest Floor (cypress mulch) and 50% ZooMed EcoEarth (Coconut fiber). With this shed, however, I was using plain paper towels, because, unfortunately, Lilia (my BP) came from the breeder with mites and I've been monitoring her to see if all the mites are gone. Also, I use an analog hygrometer.

    • @OnlyLT
      @OnlyLT 4 роки тому

@@fionashepley478 Actually, the bad shed happened while I was using the 50/50 mix -- and I worked very hard at keeping the humidity up to the correct levels. Also, I do use a digital thermometer. It's just the hygrometer which is analog -- and I'm aware they're notoriously inaccurate. But, I do not think I will get rid of the humidity box, because Lilia really liked it. And, it worked. Thanks for the help...and the good wishes regarding the mites. I hope they're gone too. I should be able to move her back to the 50/50 mix by the end of January.

That's a good question. This is what I've decided to do.
I use an opaque pencil box for Elmo, my hognose snake, because he's shy. I keep it in his enclosure all the time, but I don't keep the box humid all the time. When I went to feed him about a week ago, he was inside it, so I removed the whole box so I could tong-feed him. I took video of the feeding, which enabled me to see his belly was slightly opaque. If you have a hoggie that isn't albino, the dark belly is the first place that starts to get blue. I waited a couple of days and looked again to verify and yes, he's in shed.
I've misted the moss twice now to keep things humid. Once Elmo has shed, I plan to remove all the moss, clean and disinfect the humidity box (Nolvasan solution), put dry moss inside and wait for the next shed.
      That seems reasonable to me.

For those who keep a snake that requires moderate humidity such as a ball python in a glass enclosure, that’s why you’re having bad sheds. Look into PVC vision cages. My snakes (ball pythons) all shed perfectly fine without a humidity box. I just keep it at 50-60%. Ball pythons aren’t fish so don’t keep them in a darn fish tank.

yeetus yeetus commit self deletus it depends on how long the snake is! Usually the length should be the same as the snake. So if your snake is 80cm, the length should be 80cm. Then the height depends on the species of snake. Do they like to climb and be high up? You get the deal (: Good luck with your snake

Depends on the kind of snake! She does mention in the video that some snakes only need it around shedding time, it some snakes need higher humidity all the time. For example, ball pythons need ~60% humidity, so it would be recommended to leave the box in their enclosure all the time

@@alexise7060 nice, I have a corn too! Keep in mind that they benefit from having 60-70% humidity throughout the enclosure (they can tolerate lower but this range is ideal, they come from humid states like Florida)

Hi Emily, I recently got a Texas banded gecko and I was wondering what type of moss would be best to use for her humidity box?

I love the idea of these! Problem is, with my snow corn I can't really tell when he's going into shed as I am very new to keeping reptiles. I fear I may not know when to put the box in!

I think you can actually just leave it in 24/7.
Don’t trust that completely though, I don’t have a snake.

Hi!! I had a question...I recently ordered some Loose Coconut Fiber substrate-solely for my humidity bins for my ball pythons. I’m worried though that it might be too small?? Like the fiber almost looks like sand, it’s soo loose.
I’m worried it might mess with them...would the loose coconut fiber be bad to use?
They have a separate tank for feeding so I’m not at all worried about them swallowing it

If it hasn't been used for very long then I reuse it with another snake. But if it has been several weeks, then I replace it.
