I remember seeing this back in the early 90s. I thought it was very funny stuff and would like to see it developed even more. I was in my early 20s and a full time college student. Brings back a lot of memories!!
Sometime in 1992 I fell asleep with my girlfriend on her parents couch while watching SNL. When I woke up around 1 a.m., I had a dead arm, my girlfriend was sleeping sweetly, the house was cold and dark, and this show was on the TV. It remains one of the more surreal memories of my life -- waking up dazed and confused with Short singing and dancing while dressed as a fence. For years I've sometimes thought that it was actually a dream I was having, but here it is. I will never forget this!
I've woken with my girlfriend latched to me, and both our arms would be asleep. She once said, "I like to touch myself when my hands asleep because it feels like someone else." She's lost in upstate New York, with several rescue dogs.
"Are you gonna make it?"...."Make what?" "Are you gonna make it in show business?" I love Marty's Half-Wits character Lawrence from SCTV. Sheer comedy genius!
8:44 "Thinking about Europe." Every time I put my hand on my chin for a photograph I say this out loud. My friend asked me what, specifically, I was thinking about Europe. I replied, "The outline."
Just watched an old (dur!) Johnny Carson show with a Martin guest spot and he mentioned this, looked for it in Tube and Bam there it is! Certainly has the well known flavor of SCTV and New to Me! so fantastic! Love it! Thanks.
I have every Marty Short special from the 80s-90s all with the same quality on VHS. These should be cleaned up and put out on DVD. Love Lawrence Obach, we used to watch this over and over crying from laughter, Troy Soren. This is a great childhood memory. Thanks so much for posting this. I also have Martin Short in Johnny Appleseed w Molly Ringwald. We should make a DVD compilation of Marty's HBO/Showtime specials. Same with Primetime Glick. For the many of us who've always recognized Shorts genius from so early on.
I know a lot of people are saying this, but it bears repeating. THANK YOU for posting this!!! I've been looking for this for years, ever since I saw it when I was in high school.
I'm pretty sure this was the first comedic use of "I said I wasn't going to cry". I vividly remember watching this when it first aired. Some of it is so subtle. "I'm afraid my boards would warp" in that old vaudeville aside accent/inflection. So much good stuff here. I haven't seen it since it aired. Still holds up.
Thank you SO much for posting this! My brother and I have been searching for this for years. It's every bit as funny as I remember! "Well screw you if dat's what you tink of me."
Wow...saw an old episode of Carson a little earlier with Martin Short, and he was promoting this special, so here I am. And I have to say, WHAT A BLAST FROM THE PAST!! COMPLETELY forgot about this special! Haven't thought about it in like two decades, but was instantly blown away when the first sketch came on with that "Man In The Moon" bit, and it all came flooding back how much I loved this special when it first aired...would have been about 11/12 at that time. Thanks for the upload! This one's a gem!

@@darcandelaria Sadly no, I ruined that one royally in 1997. Sorry for the 6-year delay in responding!
@@DVincentW Sounds like an interesting person
omg the fence song 🙈🙈🙈
This special speaks to me.
One of the greatest
Thank you. Essential great humor lasts forever.
This is weirdly wonderful
That was the term that they used.
"Thinking about Europe..."
Perhaps the funniest thing I've ever heard, period.
Tank you, Tank you, Tank you! "I wish I had a button made of magic to push." How many times have I said this. To find this again ... heaven! :)
"Are you gonna make it?"...."Make what?" "Are you gonna make it in show business?" I love Marty's Half-Wits character Lawrence from SCTV. Sheer comedy genius!
I have known people like that in music. "Make what" vacant eyes bewilderment. I almost envy it.
Dale O'Day deserved his own movie franchise. Short is the source of all good things.
Truly a dancer's dancer.
"Hi-lo." Haha!
This is greatly appreciated

That's very funny!
Tracey Ullman: "Who else have I balled?" I didn't know you could say that on TV back then.
I think this was on Showtime.
It was HBO
Home Box Office.
This (in four parts) is the funniest thing on UA-cam. Thank you!

What kind of dog does he have?
Thanks you so Much for posting this! I was wondering if they re-released this!
I'm here for Lawrence Orbach! Hilarious!! Thanks for posting these!!
Cause of the Dale O Day skit, my sisters will always refer to me as their "Big Brudder". So awesome finding this clip
I call my Brudder that too! "When they rotated the room"...
Tank you very much for posting dis. [sic]

AMAZING!! I can't find this ANYWHERE! I haven't seen this since I was a kid!
YES!!! this was great...
lol @ The brutal slip out of character ; "...all my boahds will whoaup". Too funny.

1987, this came out on HBO. It's Gold standard.
0:00 Is that the kid from the "Merv Griffith Show" SCTV sketch?
Nope.
Martin Short does Danny Kaye almost constantly
😄
This is awesome, thanks! Been looking for this thing for years. Had it on VHS and have had the "Lawrence Orbach" lines stuck in my head for ages.
Thank you so much!! I lost my recording of this long, long ago.
Yikes, I don't EVER remember my eyes gravitating toward Jack Haley's junk! Marty, you're nuts!! :-)
Estelle sounds a lot like Dustin. :-)
It's impossible to get this on DVD/tape. You've done the world a great service by posting it!
We are still waiting for "Boil Boy: The Movie."
Me too!!!!!
Martin sounds like Jack Haley of the Wizard of Oz in the Dale O’Day scene. He’s a good dancer.
Yes he does. I was hoping someone else would catch that
Poor man's Wizard of Oz.
This and the bob Nelson HBO special were awesome times
Nelson shmelson or something
Me too
what year was this?
He plays effeminate guys so well.
Is this the "brown acid"?
Incorrect grammar like "gonna". Typical USA inner city lingo.
