Back when this came out, my friend and I would watch in on VHS all the time. We watched the whole Martin Short Show numerous times. This was one of our favourite scenes.
@@coreycox2345 You made me watch this again and I always notice something new. He doesn't even bother to make it look like an accident, he's purposely squirting it in his mouth and screaming. It's very subtle about how unsubtle Jerry Lewis was.
So many great characters that were morphed together with this great comedien, grew up watching his great, over the top humor...but my all time favorite would have to be Ed Grimley(best sketch with Howard Cosell as his uncle)in the SNL scetch.
I know Jerry Lewis has his fans, but Martin Short's impressions of Lewis are far funnier than most of Lewis's solo movies. I watched "Hook, Line, And Sinker" the other night, and it is one of the most painfully unfunny comedies I have ever seen. Jerry Lewis was embarrassingly bad in it. I hear "Three On A Couch" is even worse, but I'm not brave enough to find out!
It's funny even if you don't know the film it's spoofing. When you know that it's Tender Mercies with Robert Duvall it makes Tender Fella 10x + + + hilarious. If Jerry Lewis was a genius 🇫🇷 (he was) than Marty Short is most certainly one too!!!!
What's ironic is that Jerry Lewis probably wishes he was as funny as Martin Short. Martin Short captures perfectly Jerry Lewis' world class repulsiveness and unceasing obnoxiousness. Jerry Lewis may be the most obnoxious, self-centered, egomaniacal person who ever lived. Six hours after he dies he'll still be obnoxious, self-centered and egomaniacal. And to those who just *love* Jerry Lewis ... the bus to the Jim Jones Summer Camp is boarding in ten minutes, AND FREE KOOL AID!!!!!
you are nuts. he went on to saturday night live and was hilarious. his ed grimley character, which started on sctv, developed and became huge on snl, popular and truly funny, quirky, nuanced and orginal. then he did the sleazy, sweaty, paranoid attorney, nathan thurm. awesome. then he also made the hilarious very short film with harry shearer and christopher guest, where he was shearer's brother and they were a synchronized swimming duo, attempting to make it into the olympics. guest was the flaming gay swim choreographer. that was frigging gold and as funny as anything I have seen. martin short played the dim, perhaps mildly retarded brother, perfectly. he barely spoke but the confused, vacant stares and physical element to his swim routines made the whole thing. i think he helped write it, too. then later, Short was absolutely hilarious in another totally original and fully-realized character, Jiminy Glick. Only Martin Short could make you feel the perfect blend of uncomfortability and conspiratorial hilarity, as he peppered big movie stars with bizzarre questions, told them wholly inappropriate stories and flat insulted them. all this, made up as a morbidly obese, donut-wolfing, chain-smoking, enertainment reporter. that doesn't even touch on the physical genius, Short's quasi-controlled comedic falls and slips to the floor or tripping over or onto his often perplexed and horrified or insulted guests. i could go on. Martin Short is brilliant and likely too smart and original in most of his characterizations, for some main stream audiences. i think that he took chances and was really about creating new characters more than impressions, although he is a great impressionist, as is evidenced by his spot-on homage to Jerry Lewis, here. But his best stuff is his own stuff and its hard to be original and great in hollywood. simple and dumb sells way better. but Short's body of work is huge and most of it is really good. As with any 39 year veteran of comedy, you can find one or two stinkers in there, sure. it happens to all of them after that long. but most of Short's work is really good and a lot of it, next-level and truly brilliant. as importantly, for a comedian, its funny. really, really funny. HE is really funny! But to say he was good on sctv way back in the 1970s, when he was a young upstart in Canada, but not since? again, you must be crazy or maybe you just have not really watched anything from his other 37 years in the business. or maybe you have seen some of it but need some one to explain it to you? hah! Short is a legend and has only shined and gotten funnier since sctv!
"Tender Mercies" is the movie with Robert Duvall starring as a burnt-out country singer. What sets up the humour here is the low key tone of the movie being usurped by the polar opposite antics ofJerry Lewis.
I use the line "Listen sweetheart, we have a problem. I'm plum broke" in my everyday life.
I am intrigued.....what kind of response did you get to this line??
It usually doesn"t go over well on date night.
@@tonyfromconey2164 Pass the check!
I went to Coney in the late 80s and rode The Cyclone.
and that makes you cool or something?
That's Martin's late wife. Love that they did this together.
He really loved her. They were married for a long time I believe. She's great in this.
@@josephgurzynski1053 so was the football. 🏈
The football to the back of the head at the end, showing Jerry as a sadistic prick, is perfection.
I have NEVER seen this. This is classic Short. I'm so glad it was posted. Reminds me of Short's "Scenes from an Idiot's Marriage."
"I don't read reviews, so I don't know". Short's impression of Lewis is spot-on!
I'm barely holding on after the gas in the mouth. That's the point where I need oxygen. So good!
Perfectly captures Jerry’s skill with humour.
The funny thing is Marty is just doing stuff Jerry would have done….and it is hilarious
Excellent send-up of 'Tender Mercies' and only Martin Short would think of something like that. Terrific stuff.
"Don't look at me with anger please". LMFAO. And of course the gold of all of Short's Jerry Lewis sketches - the lozenge.
I was going to point the lozenge out. Martin Short is a genius!
Martin alternating Jerry's on and off stage persona and both perfect.
"I have a lot of demons that keep me up at night but hard work ain't one of them"
I love Jerry Lewis and I love Martin Short! Working those lozenges is great!
Funny, Martin Short has always been awesome,..from SCTV days to his 80's stint on SNL...even still...his Jerry Lewis is spot on!!...love the lozenge!
Lumpy63 ......must have the lazang

This made me laugh so hard!! I love Jerry and I love Martin Short!
What a funny bit. Martin Short at his best.
And Now i don't feel so good alot !
Why that's the late Nan Short playing opposite Marty. What a wonderful couple they were!
Martin Short is a genius !!
Genius!
Funnier than anything Lewis ever did.
It's like Jerry just CAN'T turn "it" off.
Don't look at me with anger, please! Glaven!
Jerry should have gotten an Emmy. Oy! For sure, for sure.
I haven’t seen this in 20 years, it is so hilarious!!!
The gas in the mouth part kills me. It's so friggin' stupid, but I'm sure Jerry has done it in a movie.
If it were not stupid it would not be a good Jerry Lewis spoof.
Apparently it almost a direct copy of an incredibly poor film of Lewis’ called Hardy Working.
Zoolander, Kitchener Leslie.

I love that he pops in a hard candy before a line, lol
“The lozenge” as I heard Short describe it while explaining how he does his Lewis impression. 😁
So good, each time I replay it, I crack up
First time I've ever seen this one...a better Jerry Lewis than the real one lmao.
Oh, come on, short is a national treasure

You do realized he is making fun of Jerry, right?

love the ridiculously forced physical comedy
DON'T LOOK AT ME WITH ANGER!
Bad acting and forced physical comedy. Perfect Jerry lol.

Love it that a Soviet built Lada shows up at a rural gas station in the US deep south.

Funny here, but not when Jerry Lewis does it.

Martin Short is funny
I now no longer read reviews and so know nothing.

Martin Short doing Jerry Lewis sings Bob Dylan was just as funny but it's no longer on you tube
Brian Patterson I posted it, if you're still interested.
Wonder why they chose Susan Oliver?🤓😎✌🏻
I'm not 100% certain this is the reason, but Susan Oliver did co-star with Jerry Lewis in 1964's "The Disorderly Orderly."
