I've been all over this video since it suddenly appeared, which, got me to dragging out the Salesmen and Bernadette for repeat listenings. Conclusion: It's a creeping masterpiece. Parade just one of many excellent tracks enhanced by the amazing "treatments" provided by the band Lambchop. BTW -- saw Vic play in Vancouver in 1999 at a dive bar by day, nightclub at night joint. Talked to Vic after the show. He thanked me for coming...I said I drove 25 miles, not the 3000 miles he covered to get here, the thanking was all on me. "Let's call it a draw then" said Vic with smile.
Vic is my favorite songwriter, I live in Athens and Vic changed the way that I write lyrics..Great pick and its good to see him still getting the recognition he deserves...❤
The takeaway from this is the simple fact that technique and skill are not as important as heart and soul. A truly great performance like this from someone who delivers every word and every note from their own pain or their own joy will just rip your heart out.
Still miss Vic, he was a genius songwriter, one of a kind live performer, and even with all of his personal troubles a deeply soulful and lovely guy. I can't recommend the incredible memoir Kristin Hersh wrote about Vic and their friendship enough, it's a very poignant and utterly beautiful warts and all read. Worth seeking out even if you didn't know vic at all or aren't really familiar with his music! Gonna go play Vic songs for an hour or two now and enjoy a little fresh air. Thanks for featuring him on your channel Michael, it's always nice to see people remember him and others discovering his music!
One of Vic's old band mates, Todd McBride died recently. I was friends with Todd...he was an amazing songwriter and person. Vic gave Todd lots of credit for his songwriting.
I'll never forget waiting that Xmas night to find out if he was going to pull through. I miss him. So much music we won't hear now. I still miss him all the time. No one could break your heart quicker than Vic Chesnutt. He was up there with the best of them as a songwriter-John Prine, Tom Waits, all of them...
saw him live in 2008, one of the greatest shows i've seen, life changing moment. happy that he's still getting some recognition yers after he's gone. Still one of the best through this day.
Vic’s library is extensive, everything is something you haven’t heard before. Legend and truly missed. Loved how you accepted it and pretty much nailed his work- great channel - big fan!
That was some heavy, gorgeous, confusing, epic tortured pain and rage with moments of near stillness, but no calm. Love it. Vic is completely new to me. Danke, as always.
Me and a friend played a tribute to Vic a couple of years ago, here in Kortrijk - Belgium. Watching this makes me realise how much I miss him. I saw Vic performing many times. I think the guitar teacher intuitively grabs him by the balls. "There so much anger in it, yet so much humor as well." Miss you vic.
Awesome! I first saw Vic Chestnutt in 1991 opening for Bob Mould at Alvin's in Detroit. We were sideways when he rolled out to the front of the stage, slammed his fist on the strings and screamed "knuckles on a cheese grater!!!!" Total trip - loved it. Been an inside joke for 30 years - weirdest concert moments.
I remember Vic Chesnutt from back when he was working on a side project with Widespread Panic called “Brute”. They had one song called “Blight” that I recall being absolutely beautiful.
Vic was a force of nature. His songs have been covered by many including the Cowboy Junkies. He collaborated with Sparklehorse, and Michael Stipe of REM was a serious fan. He pressed to get Vic into the studio to record his first album for fear that he might self destruct without any trace of his gift having been captured. His death was a real loss, and a testament to just how dysfunctional our "healthcare system" is in the USA.
thank you so much for exposing so many folks to vic. there isn’t a lot going on with the guitar due to him being a quadriplegic. but what is there is always masterful and heartbreaking. thank you again!
Holy shit, new sub, just checked your videos and you have fucking Vic Chesnutt, an incredible musician, I am so excited. At this point if I found Mayo Thompson on your channel I wouldn't be surprised at all.
Thanks for the review, I was a huge fan of Vic and saw him in Chapel Hill NC and Charlotte NC a number of times. Btw, that is Guy Picciotto from Fugazi on the Rickenbacker
I wish I had something useful to say. There's a long back story, a hundred twists and winds, a fraught relationship with life, death, humor, terror, poetry, music, his partner, all across it. He'd likely be alive were it not for our national shame - for profit health insurance and a lack of universal health care.
Just out of curiosity due to him being relatively wealthy and paralyzed in a car accident, how would a universal healthcare system have helped to keep him alive?
@@ShaneChilly According to him in the same interview, being "uninsurable" due to his quadriplegia, he was $50,000 in debt for his medical bills, and had been putting off a surgery for a year ("And, I mean, I could die only because I cannot afford to go in there again. I don't want to die, especially just because of I don't have enough money to go in the hospital."
You my friend, have stumbled upon one of the greatest singer/songwriters that ever lived! Top 5, maybe top 3 for me, all-time. Tragic. Gruesome. Tortured. Brilliance. Feverish. Pleasant. Hungry. Lost.
Michael - Vic was a national treasure and big influence on Widespread Panic check out songs like Aunt Avis, Blight, Sleeping Man, Protein Drink/Sewing Machine, Expiration Day and many more…he even formed a band called Brute with Panic and released an album highly recommended. Great to see this come up today.
I live in Athens, GA and was playing during the early 90's. Vic was always around playing. I know his sound seems a bit weird...but there was alot of this crazy type of sound in Athens, Ga back then inn the bars. Widespread Panic was all the rage then too. We played ROCCK music in my band, but this alternative sound was everywhere. You could see it at the 40 Watt every night and some of the other bars. That period of time was really crazy here...best times of my life playing and running amok around in the insanity...playing rock star LOL
At this point you've probably learnt this about Vic, but with his disability, often he would say a finger doesn't work, and he'd kind of work around it. Kristen Herst said that when Vic gave you the finger during a performance it just meant that one wasn't working today. For context read her eulogy.
Drive-By Truckers have a cover of Vic's "When I Ran Off and Left Her" on their Sometimes Late at Night EP. Soul Asylum also famously covered that song. Patterson Hood's song "Come Back Little Star" off of his solo record Heat Lightning Rumbles in the Distance was an ode to Vic after his death. Both beautiful songs worth checking out.
I saw him on the tour for this album, he past away shortly after. I had not heard of him before and had found out about the album because of people like Guy Picciotto and the members of god speed/mt. Zion playing on the record. To this day it was one of the most powerful performances I have ever seen. Side note, Vic has his acoustic guitar pickup hooked up to a boss metal zone to get that crazy broken distortion. I’ve never seen anyone else do such a thing since.
@MichaelPalmisano Vic's been my favorite songwriter for 30 years so i'd love to hear additional reactions just because it's very exciting to get analysis of his work from musicians, and guitarists in particular, rather than critics, who usually don't say much about his guitar playing except to call it "minimal", which is a cop-out. in particular, check out his solo on the song "Bug" and just his beautiful playing on songs like "Gluefoot", "Supernatural", "Withering", "Wrong Piano", "Thumbtack", "Sad Peter Pan", "Fish", "Lillian Gish", and "Swelters".
vic chesnut inspired live‘s singer ed kowalczyk songwriting. on the mtv unplugged show in the 90s Live played vic chesnuts song supernatural, which is one favourite song for me in this great performance, which had a strong impact on shaping me as a musician and a person. i still love the intensity and lyrics reflectiong on existential topics. vic has got his on story with a sad ending, but he is embedded in rock‘s history via inspiring big artists. (sry for my english.)
I got to know Vic a little. I used to work for his record label in the early and mid 2000's. He was a really kind, soft spoken guy with a very witty, sarcastic sense of humor. he could be really dark and short tempered though, as well. But he had a really generous, kind heart. So saddened when he took his life- but I can totally understand why he did it.
I used to see him often in Athens, GA. The joke was always that they handed out a razor blade with your ticket. Talented fellow but dark and troubled for sure. I think he was better showcased when he was solo, raking that claw across the strings. He engendered a lot of fan worship, which I think is kind of evident in a performance like this.
I was watching this, and feeling really bad for comparing him to the guy from Dale Hargraves band on the movie Sling Blade, but it's actually him...alrighty then:)
Vic was a volatile personality and the one time I saw him in Nashville many years ago was kind of a train wreck. I knew his reputation and knew it might be hit or miss, but it doesn't change the fact that he was a tremendous artist and his passing was a significant loss.
I asked for an autograph from him once, and he wrote: Wait for further instructions. Funny guy sitting in his wheelchair after the show. He had opened for Jonathan Richman that night in NYC.
love Vic so much. quadriplegic since age 16 i think, car accident. he does a horn using just his body that is incredible. so many songs i love so much. Vesuvius. You are Never Alone. Flirted With You All My Life. thanks for staying as long as you could, Vic. peace.
Vic was a very dextrous and skilled guitarist in his teenage years but unfortunately the accident robbed him of his chops, restricting him to playing mostly simple chords and rhythms. His playing style was so beautifully expressive and an inspiring example of creative perseverance. And that soulful voice, truly one of a kind.
