Any hope we can see some more from you soon man? Especially for Christmas? You were going really strong in 2022 and then all of a sudden you just stopped. I’m really looking forward to more of the Smersh pod James Bond and Harry Potter adventures!
These are excellent edits. I never listened to Smersh podcast, but I love all your edits. Makes me wish you were part of their crew and they were all video podcasts.
I was just rewatching some of your older edits and saw this pop up, this episode is one of my favourites! Really glad you covered it and great to see you back : )
Overlaying Michael Keaton's salary, while he gave his laughable answer about why he reprised his role as Batman. *chef kiss* Your editing really does take these wonderful commentary's to a whole other level. Great stuff.
The thing with Catwoman is that it's supposed to be ambiguous whether she's supernatural and dies several times or just is just lucky and dies once at the end. The last shot with her showing up before the credits kind of ruins it but that was a studio addition that Burton didn't want.
I felt the same way, re her showing up. And I wonder if the black cat they stopped to pick up in the alley at the end was supposed to be Selina (as an _actual_ cat)--or was it merely symbolic?
You really are going to have to do more movies with Christopher Walken in them. Those impressions are the best. I’ve watched the View to a Kill episode numerous times just for those impressions.
Thank you so much for doing this! I came from the rlm commentaries and was pleasantly surprised by these guys. Could you do the "Quantum of Solace" commentary next? It has the Welshman and alot of really good bits!
@@obiwankenobi9141 the earlier Bond commentaries feauturing Joel Morris are SmershPod's cream of the crop. At this point they still enjoyed talking about Bond and there isn't the obligatory, eye-twitchign Trump-joke thrown in out of left field.
@@ThreadBomb No need for your exercise in fragility. I still enjoy listening to all of Smershpod and i can tolerate a difference of opinion, unlike you apparently.
In my opinion, Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman is miles beyond any leading lady in the Nolan Batman films. She actually feels like a three dimensional human being instead of a mere love interest.
This is because Nolan can't write women for shit. They're plot devices; this extends even to my favourite of his films in The Prestige. Both women in that are just plot devices.
I remember being a kid, loving the ‘89 Batman, seeing this one in the theatre w my family… and genuinely being disturbed & confused. I questioned my love of Batman… until The Animanted Series brought back my faith 😅
Also, @BanyaBat thanks for the excellent editing on all your videos! I would’ve never heard of these two Brits if it weren’t for your channel. As a long-time RLM fan, I was brought here by your RLM commentary vids. Keep up the excellent work 👍🏼 The time & work you put into these really shows in each vid… and they’re entertaining as hell!

For years i thought i was the only one that noticed the eye shadow gone before he rips off his mask. I'm happy now 😆. Also The Christopher Walken impressions are absolutely hilerious
One thing that doomed "Batman Returns" was Tim Burton originally planned to play up the terror of the children in the cage dangling over the toxic sewage, showing the terrified little kids screaming & crying as the cage lowered slowly into the toxic waste. But the studio put its foot down when it came to terrified toddlers, so the cage remained stationary and in the background. The focus was switched to the corny penguin army, with rushed re-shoots, but even then the penguins only committed property, and not a single citizen of Gotham suffered so muxh as a scratch. That's when Burton passed on his option to do a 3rd Batman movie.
are you guys ever going to go back to doing red letter media commentary?, cause i do miss seen those, like i do go back from time to time just to watch them on here, but you guys need to do more of them
I too dislike this movie. Yes, the script is crap, but what I really hate is just the look of it. It was a different cinematographer from the first one (who was the brilliant Roger Pratt). The new guy (Stefan Czapsky) makes everything look cheap and small, and the colour palette is that of a frozen corpse. That cold, ugly look might suit an arty drama set in a concentration camp, but it's bizarrely inapt for a Batman movie with such cartoony performances.
I wholeheartedly agree with your dislike of this movie. However, my primary focal point of disgust was on that unimaginably _ridiculous_ insertion of the grotesque Penguin character. Unlike The Joker (in a previous Batman), you don't "love to hate him"; you just wish he (the Penguin) wasn't there.
@@philmenges9887 Oh, I definitely agree about the ridiculously grotesque Penguin. It's just very gross for no good reason. Totally inappropriate for a story set in the world of Batman, unless one's purpose is to mock and degrade it. (And I am normally one to defend a very wide range of interpretation of the material; I even think Jared Leto's Joker was okay.)
Right back atcha, of course. Even arch _villains_ should exude some sense of *style*... but the 300 pounds of UGLY, in the embodiment of that gawd-awful penguin character, just did not _work_ ! He (it) best served as inspiration for Catwoman’ s comment, “I wouldn’t touch you to _scratch_ you.”
41:29 It was already so funny when you compared the Penguin to Rudy Giuliani in the first place, but when you see him on the bed and the guys joke that he's about to masturbate and he is in the bedroom with Catwoman, that's another Rudy Giuliani parallel I didn't see coming! Like in Borat 2: Subsequent Moviefilm!
What a great re-edit 👍 On their point about the sets, I recollect that the first film was done in England, while the second movie was filmed in L.A. and they had to rebuild the sets at a much much smaller scale because the backlot was so much smaller over there. If I recall correctly they did replicate the basic layout but it was incredibly shrunken compared to the first film.
First time I saw this movie, I was sick in the hospital. I always found it a bit off putting, and yes I also noticed the duck continuity error even as a kid.
For some reason, the bit "And Commissioner Gordon, the most useless man in the world" always makes me laugh so hard. I guess it's because it comes out of nowhere in the middle of a sentence.
I know it's the character's name and based on the old horror movie actor, but I get complete whiplash every single time they drop plot points like "Bruce Wayne has a meeting with Shrek"
I absolutely adore this movie. This is the quintessential Batman movie. Tim Burton clearly recognized how ridiculous the premise of a crime fighter dressed up like a giant bat is. Michael Keaton is perfect for the role, and just right as Bruce Wayne. Everything about the 80s/90s Batman live action movies is so much fun. They were enjoyable then and enjoyable today. The animated series was also pretty good, what with its unique style and decent-for-TV writing. It warms my heart to see so many people of all ages still get a kick out of this movie, whether it's with the memorable Danny Elfman score, the impressive Stan Winston special effects, Daniel Waters' very quotable dialogue, Christopher Walken's performance, etc.; it really makes the film even more special today than when it first came out.
No wonder the spiral bomb didn't blow up the Batmobile..They had the Haynes Manuel, not the Chilton...That one had more wiring diagrams and full color pictures of the steps for repairing including the hand holding which wrench you need in the corner..
Fully agree on the scale - given the success of 89 Batman you expect a bigger budget for the sequel - and maybe they got one but it wasn't spent on Gotham. It feels smaller - and where are they? Lighting the tree at Gotham Plaza is one thing but the Mayor does press conferences there. They established City Hall in the first one, shouldn't those be done at City Hall? I get they wanted it to look different, and they could have put a new twist on the City Hall they established in 89 - but instead everything happens in or near this one city square.
Saw Batman Returns in the theater, hated everything that wasn't Batman and Catwoman, rewatched it this past Christmas, felt the same way. Great production values, score, etc. but man, the Penguin and Circus of Crime is a blight on the film, and the overall plot is idiotic.
When I was 8, I loved Penguin and the Circus gang above everything else. At 36 years old, I don't feel the same way. The film DESPERATELY needed to focus more the genuinely intriguing and sad relationship between Bruce and Selina.
Seeing this on my notifications forced me to watch Batman Returns. Just so I could have context for your review. My complete lack of cultural awareness or nostalgia made it one of the most enjoyably bad movies I have seen since The Roller Blade Seven. My favorite scene, if only for the bad Foley work, is when Batman rescues the ice princess and confronts Catwoman.
