They were usually competing families and they were a series of silly games, almost circus like in its presentation. The Royals would get involved once a year I think, and then they would change the name to 'its a Royal knockout'.

Nonsense. Movie is far superior to the story. It knows exactly what it is. Which is something that can't be said for any of the Kings' Bachman stories. Apart from Thinner. And maybe Blaze - haven't read that one yet. Then again, Bachman stories being kinda incoherent is probably the reason why they work better when adapted by other people. Both Battle Royale and Hunger Games literally came to be when their respective writers read King's The Bachman Books collection - and then re-imagined elements from it into a more coherent world and storyline.
