- Tim Burtons Batman Returns ended up being not the creative direction (box office return) that Warner Brothers wanted. So in response to that we got a pretty significant tone shift for the next entry, Batman Forever directed by Joel Schumacher and now starring Val Kilmer as Bruce Wayne. And it worked! Financially. That and once again falsely claiming Blue Harvest was the working title of 77's Star Wars when, in actuality, it was for 83's Return of the Jedi. I sometimes wonder if this is a very old ongoing joke about James getting it wrong, which only longtime listeners would truly understand. The thing is, I've seen people quoting this "fact" and even saying they heard it from Mr. Sunday Movies. So, I wish he would either correct it (just say 83's Star Wars instead of 77 without explaining) or...just stop, like he said he would several months ago ago. Unless his goal really is to troll younger Star Wars fans so that they will embarrass themselves by repeating it. I wouldn't put it past him because I don't think he really cares one way or another. But repeat a lie enough times, and it will become fact in the minds of many people. But, again, I don't think James gives a rat's ass about it, so... 🤷♂️

@@CybershamanX The joke is that the fact is wrong. Anyone who thinks about it will realise that there was no reason for the original movie to have a working title, and it's not James's fault that some people don't think about it. That said, I do understand your annoyance.

The disgust in Mason's voice when he senses an impeding Blue Harvest joke is the best thing about the joke.
Blue harvest joke floored me, nobody saw it coming. Imagine he sets the joke up for mr freeze but never does it, that would KILL.

Tommy-Lee Jones was a top tier actor of that time and his portrayal of Two-Face is like something lifted from the animated series. Plus he had naughty and nice hoes and a dope pad. What a legend.

The "Blue harvest" trivia gag in this episode left me in tears, "I'm feeling so blue". 😂😂😂 It came out of nowhere!
I think one of my favorite parts of these is when James says “edit that out” and it clearly doesn’t get edited out 😂

Ben and Laurence are amazing, but they honestly dropped the ball this time by not having that joke be accompanied by the classic optical illusion where a vase is formed by two faces.

Something I think a lot of people overlook about Frank Gorshin's take on the Riddler is that he didn't always play it with that manic energy, dialed up to 11 all the time like people think. He actually plays it fairly subdued for the most part, and then the hammy giddiness usually only comes out when he's excited. It's almost like the Riddler is trying to keep a straight face to hide his insanity, but he can't help but let it slip out sometimes.
I never once have thought about this but you’re right, I wouldn’t quite say subdued but it’s like he’s holding something back. You can see the straining and discomfort he’s in by trying to contain his excitement
James having to pause the recording because of his own ridiculous Blue Harvest joke might make this best one yet.
Remember before the internet, you would just hear things on the schoolyard and unquestioningly believe them? My best friend Jeffrey Van Deusen told me in 1993 that the bad guys in the next Batman movie would be Two-Face and the Riddler and then I moved away and never saw him again but BOOM two years later he turned out to be right and I've never forgotten it. Good job Jeffrey.

Val’s performance of both Batman and Bruce Wayne are horribly underrated. He absolutely nailed it and no one gives him enough credit. He was definitely watching the animated series for inspiration.
Val was trying his best to put in an earnest performance as a haunted Dark Knight. It's a massive disservice that he had to be crammed in with Jim Carrey and Tommy Lee Jones trying to out-zany each other.
Val Kilmer will always have a place in my Batman appreciation. Like you said, he's the closest we've ever had in live action to the animated series' warm-hearted but tortured Bruce Wayne.
Kilmer actually received about as much credit as criticism, for his portrayal. Roger Ebert, as well as several other highly respected critics, gave him a glowing review. Additionally, Bob Kane was hugely complimentary of Kilmer's rendition of the Caped Crusader.
Not sure how much Fox Kids Val watched, but he did mention that he was a fan of the 60's TV show, even visiting the set as a child. As well as saying that he spoke to writers about the duality of Bruce Wayne.

The Batman Forever soundtrack compilation album is legit one of my favourite concentrated doses of 90's Nostalgia, that CD straight up slapped. Still does, but it did then too.

Being young when this movie came out...hearing this song on freaking loop for months everywhere and never getting tired of it. U2 went hard with their soundtrack song too...and we got a stellar Flaming Lips song.

I'm trying to get over James' Blue Harvest joke. Not only due to the contrivance of the setup and the reveal coming out of nowhere (leaving James himself in absolute bits), but the SHEER AUDACITY of putting it early on in the episode instead of in Green Trivia, so it's a genuine shock when it plays out. Madman.

Batman was probably thinking that Two-Face can't make a choice if he can't tell which coin he flipped.
Kind of like the old vampire counting thing, he would be stuck between two choices forever or give up on what he was trying to do
See what I think happened was that they saw the episode Two-Face part 2 of the animated series and saw that Batman defeated Two-Face in the same way (minus the falling into the rocks and dying of course) and went "let's just do that".
Batman didn't do anything but confuse Two-Face, TF died by his own hubris.
When I was a little kid, I thought Two Face's name was "Toothpaste".
This combined with the fact that the animated version of him had a blue face (with white hair), had me literally thinking that the character was an evil Toothpaste man.
As ridiculous as that is, there was probably a Toothpaste Man in the comics.

the scene where Bruce tells Dr Chase about how we became batman, with the scene where he falls into the cave is really well done, including the narration by Val Kilmer. It feels like it is from a completly different movie that the rest of the film.
At 9:53, you can see that both hosts, Mr Sunday Movement and Nick Clement, are wearing blue shirts. This a reference to how blue Val Kilmer felt on set leading to the working title of this movie being Blue Monday (1983) by New Order

Schumacher and Kilmer obviously had more respect for the Batman character than Burton ever did. They actually tried to make him three dimensional and give him depth, instead of focusing on the villains. This is why, personally, Forever is the best of the 90's Batman movies, and my third favorite Batman movie, right after The Batman and Batman Begins
I don't know what I love more, James being incapable of finishing the _Blue Harvest_ joke without laughting, or Maso saying "here we go. He's so excited, this is the highlight of his week"
In Tommy Lee Jones’ defense, it is clear that Jim Carrey is very much a method actor, giving into the character that he plays. So I can just imagine the absolute hell of being around Batman Forever’s Edward Nygma nonstop for so long.

I guess Batman's plan with the coins is Harvey can't make a decision without his coin. There was an animated series episode where Batman switches his coin with one that always lands on its side and Two-face loses his shit. But here he has to remind Harvey to use his coin cuz he was just going to kill them all. Harvey's like, "oh yeah that's the thing I'm supposed to do." 🤷♂️
This Blue Harvest gag genuinely made me lol, James cracking up was the chefs kiss 😄
Really like this movie, hilariously campy but the subplot about Bruce’s trauma and true motivation behind being Batman was so interesting-Kidman and Kilmer were also terrific.

I'm pretty fond of Batman Forever. It's got a distinct, campy style, and memorable characters. Kilman is also a quite good Batman.

This was my favorite Batman movie when I was a kid. Mom had the VHS and I watched it all the time. Then the Dark Knight came out when I was 8 and I started developing taste. But this has a special place for me for the nostalgia

We need a level of camp in order to have some of the more iconic elements of these characters.

I always tense up a bit when UA-camrs I like talk about this movie. As a kid, this was the first Batman movie I ever saw, and it made me a superhero fan for life. I swear, I’ve outgrown countless things I was obsessed with as a kid, but for some reason, I still have the biggest soft spot for this movie to the point where I enjoy it MUCH more than the two Burton ones, and even the most recent Batman movie. As commercial as Forever is, I truly think it’s got style AND substance as opposed to Burton’s Batman films which are just style. It’s not perfect, but my nostalgic love for it is… well, forever.
I grew up with the Burton Batman. But I really liked Forever also.

Yo, the one good thing that came out of Batman Forever was the soundtrack. Holy GOD it was amazing when it came out and it still slaps to this day. The movie absolutely did not deserve as fire an album as it got. Jesus, it's like the Raul Julia of soundtracks.

As someone who was a young teen when this movie came out, I could go the rest of my life with never hearing Kiss From a Rose again and die happy. It felt like it was an hourly requirement on every radio station to play it.

One of the only things I really remember about this movie is Jim Carrey saying Tommy Lee Jones told him "I cannot sanction your buffoonery." That and Batman being really horny for really horny psychologist Nicole Kidman, which... fair. Not worth importing her into the comics decades later, though.

Batman's coins in almost any other situation with Harvey would have been a non-lethal distraction. Batman didn't choose the setting for the coin flip; also having him die prevents any chance that Dick will keep going after him.
I worked on the production of Batman Forever while it shot in New York for a few weeks.
Batman and Robin also shot again here for a little while.
The drive to Wayne Manor was shot on Long Island.
