  • Great Eastern Railway (GER) y14 class locomotive, number 564, paired with the LNER quad-art carriage set, number 74, on the North Norfolk railway in 2024.
    The y14 appears in the brilliant GER blue livery with the Quad-Arts complete in the iconic teak finish of the LNER. Both are unique as over 100 years old and the only surviving examples of their respective class. The Quad-arts are a design of Nigel Gresley featuring 4 suburban coaches interconnected by articulating (pivoting) bogies, one of the first examples of successfully articulating bogies and ground breaking at the time.
    Footage recorded over a very windy but sunny 6 and 7 April 2024 appearing as part of the North Norfolk Railway’s 60th anniversary of closure weekend.
    The event would mark the closure of the line between Melton Constable and Sheringham in 1964 and celebrate the railway’s first steps towards preservation. This featured a busy mixed traction timetable featuring a railcar and class 31 diesel as common on the line in the closing days of service. Visiting GWR 42xx ran steam passenger services alongside the y14 paired with the Quad-arts celebrating the railway’s early years of preservation with both 564 and 74 in regular use during that time.
    The y14 and Quad-arts are owned and fantastically maintained and operated by the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway Society based on the North Norfolk Railway.
    You can read more about the history of the y14/j15 and Quad-art set on the M&GN society website, details below;

    I rode behind this lovely little engine many years ago on this line but I can't remember if it was in these articulated carriages or not. The line is a treasure and well worth a visit. beautiful run
