Superb , the pinnacle of British steam technology . There is nothing like seeing a steam engine at full chat , a living breathing beast full of character and charm !
I'd love to see her run again. Shame she hasn't been steamable in so long. Spent several hours over the years fascinated by her whenever I visit the NRM in York. By far my favourite locomotive and the most beautiful.
My thought is that if it ever steamed again it would be limited to heritage railways since it lacks a lot of the modern safety features that steam locomotives are required to have for mainline running on today's railway (AWS, modern air brakes, etc.). The engine had AWS in BR days but that was removed when the engine was returned to LNER condition for preservation. If it was allowed to run on the mainline as is it would likely be limited to a top speed of 60 mph rather than the typical 75.
@@1987VCRProductions down here in Sydney/NSW, heritage trains have been limited to only 50kph, which is a bit of a shame
I have heard rumor the NRM is planning to steam her again for the centenary. Should be quit wonderful. And they certainly have the tIme to plan it. Approximately 15 years off. I assuredly will be there to ride her fir said event should it go through
@acescionti711 I'd definitely be there for that! I would say I can't wait, but by that time, I'll be 40, so I think I'll wait it out for now 😅
What a beautiful locomotive.
Thank you! Btw am British and thanks for calling our Mallard that :D
America has such a rich history with steam locomotives - but the Mallard is bar none the best of them all. Unmatched.
Well the Brits invented the damn things, so you'd expect us to make the best 😉
If only you took better care of your tracks and other rail infrastructure. Your rail service can only be as good as the rails in disrepair.
The Mallard is one of my favorite steam locomotives of all time it's right up there with the Union Pacific Big Boy and the Union Pacific Challenger. I didn't realize the Mallard was the fastest steam locomotive in the world that's awesome!
I’m amazed you hadn’t known. Anything so much as referencing her. Mentions the speed record. Well now that you do know have a wonderful delight. I imagine you’ll be indevoring to aquire a model soon
same the mallard the big boi and the challenger are the best trains
I did not know my great grandfather drove it until I read an article about my late grandfather (who died on the Mallard Ward, Doncaster 2 years ago).
Las locomotoras Mallard LNER A4 Pacific han sido maravillas de la ingeniería. Los más potentes y veloces que aún en la actualidad funcionan, son fantásticas. ;)
Mallard holds the unbeaten record as the fastest steam locomotive in the world.
A very questionable claim. A more objective evaluation would imply the record to be by the German Baureihe 05. There are reasons to believe that the Mallard run was simply not legit while the German 05 achieved its insane speed on level terrain during normal operations between Hamburg and Berlin.
@@bobbwc7011 mallard’s run was verified! 126 miles an hour check your facts and do the research mallard beat the German record
@@rudycarlson8245although the mallard has the fastest official confirmed speed. The argument that it lost to the 05 locomotive is still incredibly valid, because the mallard was running downhill when it got the record, giving it a HUGE advantage over the 05, while the 05 was on level track.
Brilliant video, thanks for sharing with us.
YES! Thanks for posting #4468, beautiful.
Me and my dad both share a common love for the Mallard. She’s a beauty, that’s for sure.
my great grandfather drove the mallard train and im so glad you both share the love for it ! ❤
Hello am British Thanks for calling our mallard that its a speed beast!
Fantastic video there mate also I’ve just spotted the bell 206 helicopter flying alongside it in this clip mate
i miss the 80's
マラード・・・世界最速の機関車・・・もう一度蘇らないかな?私は日本人ですがこの美しくて、素敵で、世界最速で、この機関車が永遠に走る姿が見られることがとても大切なモノだと思います・・・
the only problem is that NRM want to conserve mallards original parts which what stopping her boiler overhaul
Great video. Many thanks.🙂
Fenomenale La Mallard Una locomotiva a vapore favolososissima!
Grazie mille Roy Harrison per questo video favoloso!!!!
MUITO LINDA, BELÍSSIMA CARENAGEM. AERODINÂMICA ESPETACULAR.
**That's funny. At the beginning(**0:25**), it's whistle sounds like a buzzed up college fraternity kid yelling "WOOHOO"!**
Train that can bring nostalgic feelings to mind n heart... beautiful Post..
Mallard may you be able to run again😔😔😔
1:23 I know absolutely NOBODY cares, but that Deltic sounds good.
For a really fast and elegant steam locomotive, it has a very simple looking set of rods.
Meanwhile there are small steam locomotives that have rods and mechanisms that look like a mechanical calculator.
True Steampunk beauty 😍
My favourite train in the world, How Cpt Jack Sparrow feels for the Black Pearl is how i feel for Mallard
Mallard so beautiful , wonder if train crews from today’s trains could handle steam trains
Better loco than they have today
This is where the word magnificent came from.
What a magnificent Art Deco masterpiece.
what a great engine
What a great train, its so fast.
Spectacular video
It would be amazing if mallard returns to the mainline one more time in the future
stewart heidler then why was she running right here ,about 40 years after the run
@@V4li4n3 Mallard did see another 25 years of solid service after her record run, and many rail tours after her active life.
You know, bearings can be repaired, a hot box wasn't rare on steam locomotives and rolling stock of the time having plain oil bearings.
I've always thought it's funny that there isn't a bigger push to restore the Mallard. Why did they decide to let her go? Same goes for Union of South Africa (which is nearing the end of it's operating career).
Shes too historically valuable. The rail preservation society has a thing about replacing too many original parts with new ones which "damage" the purity of the locomotive in its original form. Kinda like thesus's ship. (If you replace every single part on a ship with new ones over time, is it still the same ship?)
Thats probably why they wont restore her to running condition again.
As for the other A4s, I think they are restoring them on a roster or something like that, as Union of SA ends, Sir Nigel Gresley will be finished. (She nearly is but covid delayed the completion) and after that Im assuming they'll start on Bittern.
@@_Zekken for me, I honestly wouldn’t care how many parts they replaced. If they replaced every part on mallard, I wouldn’t care. Because it is still mallard in my eyes. The only thing I care about is being able to see her run again.
@@Christopherbellfan203 yeah Im the same really. Replace what needs replacing, keep what doesn't and let her run again.
But its not up to us unfortunately, and at least we've got other A4s which are being kept running.
Outstanding
Thank you, Have you seen the follow up : ua-cam.com/video/OzUyLKO-8Ik/v-deo.html
The single greatest train in history, maybe other that the rocket
What a star...
Really born first speedy giant in time.
Love the loco and wissel
Was that Anneka Rice, making a guest appearance in the helicopter, before the early version of the intercity 125 came thundering through that tunnel...?
What a lovely sight. If only she still ran today. At least the other A4's still do charters.
Mallard is on static display at the National Railway Museum, Dominion of Canada and Dwight D. Eisenhower are on static display at the Canadian Railway Museum and Railroad Museum. Sir Nigel Gresley, Bittern and Union of South Africa are currently operational as of 2023.
The PRR Banshee whistle will always scare me but i think I just found my new fear 2:11
Holy shit this needs to be submitted to the national railway museum in York as archive photage mallard 1986 if you can please do so
My dad fired up on the mallard he went back to see him at york yesterday x
@@Bahamas-rd8le Can’t tell anyone would they should think, I even think Mallard is a “he”

Spencer:
Now I know why Spencer underestimates Gordon so much xd
They could probably get her back to working order with some proper restoration. The Flying Scotsman was out of commission for longer, and they brought her back.
She was out for 12 years whilst under restoration from very son after entering the national collection in 2004. And returning in 2016. Meanwhile Mallard hasn’t steamed since 1988 if I’m wrong
Mallard:I hit 100mhp
Flying scot:HAH at least am still running
Mallard hit almost 130 mph which in those days was like hitting 300 now..
I’d love to see this on the mainline etc but it’s in the Railway Museum in York
My great grandfather Clarence Fletcher was a driver on this.
Not that I came here for it, but this is some excellent camera work
Very aerodynamically efficient
The so called experts said steam was polluting, what about planes and cars?
I miss mallard
1:16 the mallard's whistle from train and rail yard simulator
would love to see mallard go one last run see her at full cry
Mallard passes with plane noises.
i mean my country (america) is cool, but i do really wish i was british
just a remarkable lot, them
I’m a Brit living in California. I went Kong’s Cross to Grantham LNER 2 weeks ago over track where Mallard set the record 126.3 MPH.
Inn2 days viewing BigBoy at Victorville and again in Los Angeles. A different animal but both restored steam locomotives. Not fast but very powerful. Nearly 8000 HP. Mallard around 1800 HP
with a horn that sounds like an aztec death whistle
I wish i couldve ridden a A4 or at least a rail zepline
The horn 💀
Respect++++++++++++
Mallard in the railway series the mallard returns in real life from thomas and friends
It's Spencer
I cabbed mallard in the 1950s when it was in kings cross station.Cant see H/safety allowing that nowadays.
0:26 wooooooooo!
That is a sexy train
ahh Gordon big best
That whistle sounded like a guy screaming like a duck
What a shame the helicopter drowns out the sound of Mallard.
FOR REAL
I like trains
..... ummm (re the last comment), well yes but..... Stephenson named his after a vegetable.... so.....
And yes kids, this was 1986, that was before the world was invaded by aliens from the Obesity Galaxy and clothing was made in colours other than black.....😎
Lv.9999 Thomas
Nigel Gresley, the greatest of them all
I wonder why mallard stoped running nowadays, I really wish it was back on the rails like flying Scotsman
NRM cant afford to overhaul mallards boiler due to it being uneconomical to them and they want to preserve the original parts
This. This is why British Steam Engines are better than American Steam Engines
An American steam fan or not, there’s nothing that can make me not love the Mallard
It’s shameful that this legendary engine hasn’t run in 40 years... why not restore it? None of the existing A4s are in mainline service...
Imagine if the t1 5550 breaks mallards record. I bet we know whos gonna want her crown back.
Sorry to say, it won’t happen. NS prohibits steam from achieving speed higher than 40mph on their mainlines, steam must have PTC fitted, cab signals, etc. Also due to the recent events in Ohio, I do not believe NS will allow steam on their rails for at least five years. 765, 1225, and 611 are exceptions because NS knows those engines very well. Don’t even think about Amtrak. They will not allow steam on their lines. UP, BNSF, maybe, but I highly doubt it as Freight comes first, even Amtrak has to go into sidings for priority freights. Maximum the T1 will do is probably 80-85mph max.
Is "Mallard" the name of a particular engine OR the name of a CLASS of engine ?
It’s the particular engine, there is something called research, the whole class together is the A4
@@jayyy3_yt295 bruh it’s just a question I mean a lot of USA trains were named classes like BIG BOY or CHALLENGER
@@S.P.Q.Rrespublicas Ik that I was just saying, it’s probably the way I wrote it, I wasn’t trying to be rude or start an argument
why was it retired again...
Many boiler problems and it just didnt have the power anymore due to all the problems
stewart heidler she went 126 in 1938 and has been under many overhauls since then (in BR ownership)
Cant believe germans let the worldd fastest train title slide to the british
anyone seen Jimmy Carr

Mallard is my favourite train because sssssssssssooooooooooo fast-----------😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮!!!!😂!!!!!!!!!!'''3'😊
omg it's the loco from Thomas the tank engine

Ah yes, so true, but the poignancy is in the understatement. An art that is often lost today. Indeed, I wonder what it would be called to day?
