Zakk is such a nice guy too. Met him outside their tour bus in montana. Such a funny humble man. I just thanked him for his work and asked if he’d sign my No More Tears cassette that was my dads. He bought it the day it came out in September of 1991. Id told Zakk that and he was humbled to hear how I’d been a fan since I was a toddler. Needless to say that cassette and the paperwork included is framed and hanging on the wall in my living room. By far my most prized possession.
This was during a black label society tour in 2019. Ozzy last played in Montana in 2008 in billings. I didn’t make that show since I was still in high school. lol
I was in the Jersey music scene and Zakk (I remember him as Jeffrey) was WELL KNOWN even before Ozzy!!!! I was playing in metal, jazz and proto-grunge bands(it was just called alternative music before it was named grunge). Zakk heard about Ozzy auditioning guitarists on WPLJ and called in (I'll never forget it. I was sitting in my buddies van listening to the interview and Ozzy was saying that all of the guys auditioning sounded like Yngwie on acid). Anyway, they told him off air where to send his demo and the rest was history. The news about Zakk spread like wild fire, plus the scene back then was pretty close knit...we all knew each other. Zakk use to give guitar and bass lessons at Jackson Music in Jackson Township and played in a psuedo-hair metal band and he was just a beast of a guitarist. You could tell he was the talent in that band. I wasn't surprised he made it...everyone knew he definitely had the talent but he had the work ethic and the intangibles too. I'm really happy that he turned out to be the legend that he is today...but again, certainly not surprised in the least.

I think what sealed the deal was that he wasn't TRYING HARD to be a replacement for Randy Rhoades, but he'd studied Randy long enough to know how he did it and Zakk respected Randy's legacy/memory and paid homage to Randy the best way he could while still being himself. I'm not a BLS fan enough to follow Zakk his whole career, but from what I have seen... having been with Ozzy, he's matured into a better man and a better musician for having been around Ozzy and Sharon. I've even seen where he's gone about dealing with the issues of playing gigs with BLS as a "What would Ozzy do in this situation?"
@@tamibrandt No bro...as a musician Zakk was already a great in the making...its just that no one knew him yet. He gained a better music BUSINESS and band management sense from Sharon and Ozzy but he had his own complete style years before Ozzy. Trust and believe I witnessed it first hand, in person, before fame. And really he can dissect all the great guitarists styles. He has a music teachers brain in terms of playing but unlike a lotta musicians with encyclopedic knowledge of something who tend to play very sterile and methodical, he still plays with heart and feeling. You gotta think, he taught guitar and bass...kids come in wanting lessons and when you sit with them they ask you to teach them how to play like their favorite musician so he had to know all the hottest and current stuff. It wasn't like he got with Ozzy and started brushing up on his Randy Roades, the guy could have played in Dokken or Metallica or any other band just as easily and fit right in.
@patrickkilian515 I wouldn't call him sloppy at all. He just doesn't articulate like modern metal guitarists. His overall feel is more like most mainstream 80's rock guitarists.

I met Zakk at a Def Leppard show about 20 some odd years ago. He was freaking humble, and treated me like he knew me my whole life. I was but a kid at that time.
I remember when Zakk came along back in the day. My guitar instructor here in a small town in central Ohio sent in a demo tape but he obviously wasn't hired (despite being very good as well). A few years later, that same guy named his future son Zakk.
I’ve seen Zakk three times; twice with BLS and once with Ozzy. Absolutely one of the last true guitar gods. I missed him on the Pantera run this year, but hopefully they’ll do another run in a couple years!
