The DESTRUCTION of Luke Skywalker

  • We need Luke Skywalker! For decades, Luke has represented hope, optimism, and an unwavering belief in what is right. But somehow the sequels have completely destroyed him, and made him a shell of the person he was. Despite Mark Hamill's multiple attempts to save Luke character, Rian Johnson managed to destroy him completely in The Last Jedi, making him a milk swilling recluse, ready to die on a windy island.
But that's not what Luke Skywalker is about and that's not what Star Wars is about. In this video, I look into just exactly why we need Luke Skywalker and he is one of the most important heroes of our age!

The biggest issue I have when it comes to characters and their identity politics pit fall is how a writer's mindset is set on highlighting the identity and catching PC points rather than focusing on the character themselves and their stories. The people before them fought valiantly to gain access in spotlighting a specific identity that it inadvertently overshoots. The victimhood was kept even when the privilege was granted. A lot of the shows which highlight diversity had me doubting its writing for this specific reason. Although, I think some shows are finally getting it right, specifically, kids cartoons.

We know that know matter how great he was, he will end up dying alone a bitter old man who when the need to save the galaxy came, he backed down. The force projection was not a hero's entrance because he was never really there. He accomplished nothing in that situation. Rey was the one that saved everyone by moving some rocks. His delay was meaningless.

They have the setting, they have the names of places/people/things, they have all the licensing, they even have all the fancy effects, but the soul is completely gone, it's no longer what made Star Wars, Star Wars, the characters behave uncharacteristically, they cram in whatever 'fan service' they can instead of writing good stories and don't even get me started on any of the plot holes or cheap plot devices - more than anything they just feel like shameless cash grabs with a Star Wars veneer and it's sad, plenty of people now even say that the prequels were better than the current movies, and people HATED the prequels
All we can do is hope for more involvement from dave filoni and john favreau so that we can get some good Star Wars again.

And yet, even here, Johnson was making an inferior story that Lucas had already done better: Anakin Skywalker came from nothing, and his son didn't have much more than he did to start on, and Obi-wan became great though we never heard anything about HIS lineage, or even his background!

Yes, the Skywalkers did have their lineage to start with, but hardly anything else (slave, clueless farm boy), so I think it at least shows you don't have to start powerful and famous to be great. But it is Obi-wan that really cinches my argument.
I would say that the fact that we don't know anything about Obi-wan's background just drives home the point that his greatness has nothing to do with his lineage or what he came from. His background is SO unimportant to what he becomes, we never hear a thing about it! It's entirely irrelevant!

    • @jasonp.1195
      @jasonp.1195 3 роки тому

@@MarkJones-gt2qd Hello sir. As you've laid it out I don't really disagree with. The slow revelations that leave our protagonist free to eventually 'triumph' against the alien - yup. What bugged me about this progression was that the audience is given this initial scenario about human victory and subsequent life off planet that is turned to ash by the end of the film. Greater humanity is revealed to be scrambling in the muck by the end - so that was also a let down. Our hero's journey doesn't even neatly resolve into a happy ending, but instead the we got a clone convention showing up to crash the love shack party. The world we were left with seemed to be entirely worse than where we started.
However, what really sticks in my imagination are the extreme details the Alien A.I. placed into the environment to sell the fakery to its cloned humans agents. The biggest one is the the gorgeous living / working arrangements of the mass produced station. That upper living area and astounding swimming pool reflected a pretty deep understanding of human design sensibilities. It was super stylish, not something reflective of an alien who barely knew us might cobble together.
Secondly, the lower drone repair facility was a place our hero character worked on and repaired those drones. This means the mechanical insides of those probes were amenable to human repair using tools our hero character understood and plausibly with details like manuals our hero could reference, tools, replacement parts and whatnot. The implication I took was that the alien A.I. would have to have either A) granted the human an understanding of the details of repairing its technology in such a way that the human didn't even notice it was using really inhuman technology or B) Actually designed those drones from scratch to have insides that resemble human technology. Either answer would once again require the alien intelligence to have a pretty deep understanding of humanity. Not a pushover.
In the end, what dooms the Alien A.I. is essentially a failure to know about 'the oldest trick in the book' kind of human ploy. In this case a Trojan Horse sort of attack. For me this required the aforementioned deep understanding of human design, aesthetics, technology and so on to conveniently fail when it comes to defeating the hero character's attempt at a sneak attack. Essentially the ultra capable villain suddenly becomes clueless in the face of a plot armored hero. This for an alien who had to have already defeated and very likely studied the remains of human military technology during the course of its subjugation of Earth. I find this unconvincing.
To restate. I actually think you've captured a good portion of what the director probably was going for. But by using such gorgeous set and vehicle designs from such talented concept artists as those who made the film so beautiful, makes it simultaneously difficult to believe the alien intelligence wouldn't have seen that particular sneak attack coming a mile away and, plot armored characters aside, neatly nullified it.
More or less I wanted to see that triumphant humanity living out in the Solar System - not just be back in the muck with plucky survivors for the umpteenth time.

@@jasonp.1195 Thanks for your considered reply. Sure, there's a place for a better film about an entirely different story!
I liked it because, mainly, it fooled me. (sixth sense did it the best) and I do like Tom Cruise. The Edge of Tomorrow is my favo sci fi with him in, but he's done several good ones.
I was fortunate not to have seen spoiler for either film, so I got to enjoy the reveals. I especially loved it when he awoke back in the Army camp each time.
What I like about Oblivion is the set design. Plot holes aside, I love the lunch with his wife glaring at him too. I even sympathise with his coworker unrequited lover, it's tough....
Now, my favourtie reveal of all time would be the Matrix, except some pillock spoiled it for me long before the red pill. Still a great film, of course. NO captain, you men are already dead. At least I didn't realise at that point that this was the simulation.
Thing is, there are sooo few good or even decent sci fi that I'm pretty easy going.

I never understood why Luke was so keen to kill Ben when he, Luke, was the only person who saw first hand that people can change. That no matter how bad someone is (Vader), they can be redeemed. Luke completely gave up on Ben instead of teaching him what happened to Vader, and how he changed. Luke could've trained Ben to control the dark side, to give him balance. Instead, Luke continued to taunt him even to his own death.

It's the right tone and everything! Not patronising, but also not dumb or irritating. I can't replicate it lol. Most can't, although they try (and fail.. wannabe broadcasters, they are unbearable, most podcasters etc are just irritating!) You are actually talented and I hope you carry on with this format - it's simple but effective. It's not tryhard or anything, and clearly it's working. You just need more shares and they will come. This is great.
You stand out though due to the real things- drop the star wars stuff cause that's already overflowing and a dying franchise ,tbh. Plus the real things (and starved for commentary such and Meghan and harry,) will only grow in audience.
Your channel is superb! I love it so much and have shared your Narcissist videos on my platforms, and shown them in real time to family and friends. .. so well done yet easily digested. Markle is such a toxic person and it's hard to understand fir people who are unaware of markle- let alone what Narcissism is. You put it so perfectly.
Please do more on them- Meghan controlling people around her and the toxicity of that, those red flags and how sheltered people don't see that coming etc.. I can talk for hours on hours about it. I know them in and out.. harry has Narcissism himself, no doubt! Spoilt beyond belief 🙄🙄😓.... But he exposed the horrid , ungrateful side of these people who we used to hold up to high standards.. 🤦‍♀️ sadly ,harrY is too dumb to see that nor realise what he takes for granted.. he is too busy trying to keep the biiiatch happy. Meanwhile she abuses us, her family, the public, servants, Press who are close to harry.. his friends and family etc... but harry was clearly OKAY with her abusing them all, us all, right? That's why I feel no pity for him. He's just as bad and not empathic at all... I laugh at people who ever thought he was 😂😓🙄.

We do NOT need to be arrogant and depreciating and female chauvinist pigs, to grow and be better. We are not entitled. And it’s not just okay when we screw up, we should have to own and face our mistakes like anyone should. It is not fair or strengthening to let us off. Or to hand us anything we want. And it isn’t just all good when women usurp male roles. Female leads should earn the following and loyalty like any other character. And the past is not something to tear down but learn from. You actually see how disconcerting that is for him in the Thrawn trilogy written by Timothy Zahn (it's either in the first or 2nd book of the trilogy). Luke knows instantly that something is wrong. When the Force comes seeping back, he feels like everything is right again, like his senses are no longer muffled. I think he even makes a visible sound of relief that catches Han's attention. Excellent series, if you've never read it. Another tragic victim of the recent movie trilogy... years of the Star Wars legendarium got tossed into "Legends" and no longer count as canon (we fans know better). Luke grows so much in the Star Wars extended universe, although he has to fight how his own hero complex can tempt him to fall toward the dark side like Anakin. Luke is not one to be consumed by despair; his idealism is more likely to be his downfall (even to the dark side) than anything else. The Luke of the original trilogy and of the extended universe was so disrespected by the recent movies. His character deserved better.

Luke Skywalker was very faithfully represented in the countless iterations, cameos, side stories, and legends that surround the greater Star Wars universe. He's in games, comics, shows, and stories.. and he is always what it means to be a Jedi. To be honest and humble, thoughtful and forgiving. His actions follow the Jedi Code -- not platonically, not with a casual gesture, but in his heart and in every action. From the high level storyline to the slightest expressions that Mark Hamill brought to life so perfectly and so uniquely.
How such a clear and decisive character, who embodied so much and who touched the hearts of so many, could be so misrepresented and disrespected... I just don't know. It hurts my heart in such a unique and personal way that there's no true defense for it. I choose to use my experience with the newer Star Wars movies as reminders of how much I loved the old ones -- of how important the details of each moment in each of those movies were.

It sucks that in so much media today, creators feel the need to ruin/destroy established, iconic, and WONDERFUL characters (*cough* Luke *cough* Anakin) in order to make their new “heroes” look good. It’s just such a terrible message and ends up doing injustice to both the old AND new characters. Rey didn’t need to steal Luke and Anakin’s entire legacies to become a good character, cause quite frankly it backfired because she WASN’T a good character 😂
As a woman, it’s so disrespectful and sexist that female characters get treated this way, and then the creators call US sexist for not liking their Mary Sues??? Excuse me I am a girl who just wants to see GOOD female protagonists who don’t massacre the bestest of boys Luke Skywalker in the process, thank you very much 😂😂😂 Women are allowed to have flaws and weaknesses, and seek help from older generations to guide them. Luke became my hero a few years ago, so I didn’t get to grow up with him as many people did, but his (and Mark Hamill’s) treatment in the newer films broke my dang heart ❤️

The way they could handle Lukes was like this.
Make him be the one who personally met all his students or bring masters out of hiding, and despite advices from them he still trains kylo and despite he having visions of his betrayal he still trust him only to be betrayed and kylo still kills his students and friends.
Also make him so that at tha point he achieved another step deeper into the force where he can feel not just their deaths but their thoughs so the last thing they all feel is that they were right and that luke by trusting his nephew efectevely didn't trust them
Luke: "They were my friends my disciples! i force them out of hiding. They trusted me! but it seems... i didn't trust them....
This would imply that Luke realize he could be favoring his family over the other members of the order and will justify to a degree the reason to go into exile.
And while in that state he wasn't just lamenting himself he was studying and trying to find new ways to use the force or rediscover old ones
and he thought that he would not be able to confront Kylo for being close to the Dark Side if he ever tried and he had to wait for an unrelated party to deal with him, that they will decide if he deserves forgiveness or not.

Yoda told Luke "Once you start down the Dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny. Consume you, it will."
During Luke's confrontation with Vader, Vader threatens Leia. Luke gives into his fear and his rage, and channels that emotion to not only attack, but defeat his father. Luke defeated Vader using the Dark Side. And then Yoda was proven wrong. Not only was Luke not consumed by the Dark Side, but Anakin returned to the light out of love for his son.
Yoda, and the Jedi order, were wrong. They were so afraid of the Dark Side that they labeled fear, anger, and love as the path to evil. They were so afraid that they outlawed fear. Between that and "Only the Sith deal in absolutes," its a wonder that droids weren't short circuiting left and right in the face of such logical fallacies.
The Jedi order failed Anakin. They were constantly telling him that he didn't belong. He was too old. Too scared. Too passionate. The guy was raised a slave, forced to leave his mother, and instead of being helped with his trauma, he was criticized for it. Of course he falls in love with the first person that doesn't treat him as inadequate, and gives his loyalty to a manipulative abuser as soon as the abuser gives him praise. Anakin wasn't evil when he was taken by the Jedi. His inability to follow the Jedi teachings wasn't a problem with him, but a problem with the Jedi. The Jedi took "bring balance to the Force" as meaning the destruction of the Dark Side. But Luke used the fear and rage to defeat evil, and then used love and compassion to redeem it. That's true balance.
But Luke apparently didn't take this lesson to heart, and simply tried to recreate the Jedi as they were. So it makes sense that history would repeat, and Ben Solo would fall. It makes sense that Luke would then become disillusioned with the Jedi. But it doesn't make sense that Luke would turn his back upon his family. That, for me, is the biggest betrayal of his character.

Second video of yours I’ve ever seen… Brilliant! Absolutely BRILLIANT!!! Your analysis of the issues that face the day, by analogizing it to the travesty of how woke Lucasfilm execs mistreated a beloved character was superb! One didn’t have to dislike modern wokeness to understand what they did to Luke Skywalker, and one didn’t have to understand the legacy of Luke Skywalker to understand the problem of modern wokeness! This was the best analytical breakdowns of (not just) how wokeness destroyed a film franchise, but of how everything that came before does NOT necessarily equal everything bad, that I have ever seen! You are an excellent writer! You took complex social paradigms, and step by step, you walked the viewers through an evidentiary hearing, utilizing a film franchise we all know and love. But at the same time you demonstrated how both woke obsessed Lucasfilm executives, and filmmakers, destroyed not just a film franchise, but the legacy of its lead character Luke Skywalker, and its’ most stalwart supporter, Mark Hamill! Again, excellent job! I sense a very bright future ahead of you!

I watched this video a year ago and was blown away by your insight into the deliberate destruction of a beloved character. I am a 75 year old Star Wars fan, as is my 49 year old son and 20 year old granddaughter. I just shared this video with her as you express so eloquently what we have discussed ever since the end of the sequels-the last one with a story so far fetched and convoluted I could barely understand what it was about. Then Luke was resurrected on the Mandolorian, and his treatment in the reviled sequel suddenly became a side note, a bad dream from which we awakened to remember all us not lost after all. The shared emotion as seen in the clips was very real-a hero was restored from the ether to continue on his original, intended path. As you said, “...and that’s why we all need Luke Skywalker.” Thank you, Baggage Claim.

Well stated! Luke Skywalker was my hero growing up. I grew up in sn abused home and the idea as a young kid that I had jedi powers and was ment for something greater and to not turn to the dark side helped me.
I'll always remember Luke in the original trilogy's!

A very beautiful video. I saw The Return of the Jedi the first time when I was around four years old and the story, even at that time, sank deep into my emotions. The thought of a son inspiring his father to greatness has always been so moving to me that I always feel the tears when I remember that movie. I lived a good childhood and I am way into a good young adulthood. My adolescence, however, wasn't bad by any means but it wasn't good either. I hated someone that I love, someone that forged me into the good man I am today, and it was with the ability to forgive that person, and forget the anger I felt at the time, that I am where I am today, happy, and with the best family one could hope for. I forgave and he changed, for the better. Today I reflect, and I cannot help but ask myself how much of Luke Skywalker manifested in me on that pivotal day in my young life. Now I know that Luke inspired me to be a better son, a more patient, forgiving, and compassionate human being. Thank you.

WOW goddamn that was hard to watch. i was hesitant to watch this fr, because it's fairly obvious what Disney has done wrong & how they fucked up and i find all the whining, criticizing, and hating (although justified) to be tiresome and triggering for me.
    but most of all...
completely lacking an honest & aware critique of what was good about those films, and what they did right. but most of all lacking what I finally heard in this video that relieved me greatly and equally tore me open emotionally.
    thank you, for that.
I've thought many times about these films, that are the closest to my heart, that kept me going as a child struggling with deep depression and self esteem from trauma & learning disabilities caused by abuse, and neglect. Star Wars was my escape, and so much more. it wasn't just fantasy it gave me the only happiness and hope i found by showing & teaching me things that no one else was or could by lifting my depression even momentarily, but most of all because the story telling and characters were so real.
for being sci-fi fantasy film story it had more truth n reality then i was being exposed to anywhere else be it school or religion n home. although it's set in a completely fantasical "world" the actual charactet development is solidly based in timeless truth and the core layer of reality that we often don't even see or touch in everyday life.
Lucas and all his crew were able to do that because of their values, their passion, and their drive to be innovative & creative while still staying grounded in the practical knowledge & limitations of the PAST.
Many of them especially Lucas had their art skills & goals informed by past-sed down knowledge from books like Campbell's Monomyth: Heroe's Journey & Hero with 1,000 Faces, and experience in Art & Film School. which is the past.
By embracing the knowledge, experience, and (very importantly) the limitations of the past they were able to take those boundaries, of what was possible both practically & theoretically, and push them farther than anyone else believed or imagined could be done.
that was the power they used. that same power Luke was finally able to harness to become a Jedi, to redeem his father, and defeat the Emperor.
if he hadn't accepted the PAST in the form that he was confronted by it:
FEAR.. of his Lineage, of the Unknown, and of further Loss & Tragedy.
ANGER..1st at his fate, then the Empire, at the Lies (by his trusted mentor Ben-Kenobi & everything he was taught) and all the Injustices of the Empire like killing his Family, the Destruction of the Jedi & the Republic (or Freedom) and of the Genocide of Alderaan.
HATING.. his situation on Dagobah his own Failure and Weakness, but most of all Hating Vader(before & after he learned the truth).
DESPAIR.. that things were so "Unfair!" and he was unable to leave the farm life and follow his friends & his own Dream, that he was helpless, alone, and powerless in the first place, then at learning the Truth finally which was the worst on top of the worst. basically not only was he just one person and a simple farmer at that who couldn't defeat or change the galaxy much less his own life and then he finds out what his place actually is in everything, what his own true family history is and what he is truly up against, and then for added pressure for temptation to darkness and to despair, he's told that the fate of the Jedi, the Rebellion, his own "Soul", and fate of the Entire Galaxy is all on him.
[did u catch that? "Fear leads to Anger, Anger leads to Hate, Hate leads to Suffering."]
Talk about the Past being fucked up and overwhelming, and being tempted to say fuck it "Let the Past Die. Kill it.."
but this is exactly why I love SW & Luke Skywalker and always been more of a Hero to me than any superhero or other character. if he hadn't accepted to the past and learned how to overcome it then it would've all ended horribly, there would be no Jedi or Rebellion. there would be no story.
same for Lucas and his crew, if they hadn't accepted the past and what they could learn from it and How & What they wanted to change, so that they could come as close as possible to creating this absolutely grand vision that they all shared, then it would've either never gotten made. Or it'd be such a terrible film that it would've been forgotten. Or at best some over indulgent indie art film b-movie that only gets recognition & love from the fringes of weird scifi geeks & hipster film nerds.
(I'm not talking about those films, or type of people in a negative critical way. just making a point.)
Star Wars was a cultural phenomenon, and an epic success for a reason, that I hope I'm making clear.
They didn't say "fuck the past" they accepted it, and they paid attention and tribute/homage to it with love, while moving forward in completely innovative revolutionary ways.
Thank You to this channel for inspiring so much thoughtful reflection in me today. And for reAwakening my inspiration and LOVE for my favorite version (the Orig Trig + Legends),and what I believe is the REAL Luke Skywalker!
    ✌🏻 MTFBWY(All)Always!

In the Legacy of the Force novel series, Luke nearly kills his nephew (Jacen) after his wife has been murdered and his son (Ben) has been tortured by said now-Sith Lord nephew. During this incident, Luke nearly falls to the dark side. It is Luke's niece, Jaina, who is later able to successfully defeat her brother.
And it is so much better a story than Luke nearly assassinating a boy in his sleep for the crime of having a bad dream, and Rey Who overcoming every obstacle with little difficulty and zero personal sacrifice.

The destruction of Luke Skywalker did more than just end his existence in the films; it effectively ended all the good Mark Hamill used to do when he would dress up as Luke and go to children’s hospitals. Now, an entire generation has been cut off from Luke Skywalker the hero, and that is the most grievous sin of all.

This video brought me to tears. got a clear and sober eye. You get at points a lot of angrier voices can't express as clearly. I've watched several vids so far and learned a lot from your analysis about my own reactions and growing disinterest toward certain parts of pop culture. I love female heroes and was excited when we first encountered Rey but her character never progressed because she had nowhere to go. I'm pretty sure the thing Finn wanted to tell her was that she was a Mary Sue and when she healed that snake he was like, oh she must know already.

    Great video! I agree wholeheartedly.
What they did with Luke felt more like they were trying to teach the audience something instead of continuing a story. That’s the core of their error, because people don’t watch Star Wars to learn lessons but to experience the characters and their journeys. These creators wanted to tear him down to get their story and themes going, but in doing so, they derailed the most important hero in the entire Star Wars saga.
I also hate how obsessed we have become with burning down the past, when there is so much wisdom there.

I 100% agree with every thing you said, Luke was my hero and my favorite character since I saw A New Hope, but the Last Jedi Came out and completely destroyed my favorite character, I was especially saddened to see that mark Hamil, the man who played Luke for 40 years, be devastated to what they did to Luke, I hope star wars can recover from this, but the fans will always remember what they did to one of the best character in the saga

@@thenightman541 maybe but for fans it gave both us and Hamil the chance to see Luke Skywalker as he is meant to be not the joke that the sequels handed to us. and so although it may have undercut the finale it gave fans the chance to see him as we wanted not as we were given.

Some of the lines you say really remind me of a line from the stormlight archive. One of the characters (without going into too much detail to prevent spoilers) has an incrediblely climatic moment where he basically says, if you erase what happened, my journey becomes irrelevant. I can't become a better man if I didn't start from somewhere and kept moving forward.
