Linus, switch to Linux for a month. I recently did and found it surprisingly great to use! It's a perfect middle point between Windows and OSX and as long as you're willing to deal with installing nearly everything yourself, I totally recommend it. As a long time Windows user using Arch Linux has been really fun and refreshing. I'd recommend starting with Arch Linux as your first distro mainly because it forces you to learn Linux in and out. Using most other distros they hide lots of the hard to do stuff, so when you get stuck and someone asks you to use the terminal you'll just be confused.
I'm the only person out there who thinks linux is out date? I explaind better (sorry for mistakes) is really neaded a os where the guy is using it must know every damm comand to install even simple things? If you mother need to watch email she can't even boot up the system, if i want to run even a simple generic game i need to install wine and many other things and i have no insurance that it will work. Even flash player bother sometimes with distros like ubuntu o mint, and youtube gets laggy and fullscreen at 60p won't work.
Giorgio Zaffonato The only way to get *proper* Flash support on Linux is to install Chrome, which has its own Flash player (Pepper) built-in. Adobe stopped supporting Linux a long time ago, as far as I know. The Adobe Flash player plugin for Firefox in Linux is TERRIBLE.
Nightstalker Gaming $3000 Computer (not built for gaming) runs Crisis 3 at medium settings at 60fps/1080p with a mobile GPU? How about yes? Also, what idiot would buy this for gaming? Linus done this test specifically to see if the 5K iMac can game, which it can.
Macs aren't about gaming, they've never been about gaming. Sure, if you already own one, it has a couple of games, but nothing groundbreaking. Like people complaining that a prius isn't great for drag racing. Different product for different tastes and needs.
Lawlzinator iMacs where intended for more 3D rendering (games) so people would stop telling apple to put a GTX in their computers...iMacs are made for things like making games thats why the made the MacPro for professional and iMac for 3D rendering. Trust me there computers all have different uses
+Rainbow Dashs BBFF How do Macs make you smarter and more creativity ? Can you list the apps, which are related to Business, run better on Macs than Windows ?
+Lawlzinator A Prius is at least has one feature (fuel efficiency). What can a Mac do that a high-end PC for the same price can't do? I really would like to know.
***** Well it runs Crysis 3 and other titles at up to 1440p, maybe 4k... no xbox or ps4 could do that. So on the hardware side yes, it's just a very expensive PC with another os
Guys! I just bought the parts for the new PC I'm building. It's my first build! i7 4790 Gigabyte GTX 970 16gb RAM Corsair Vengeance 128gb Crucial SSD 2tb 7200rpm Hard Drive ASUS ATX DDR3 2600 LGA 1150 Motherboard H97-PLUS Corsair Graphite Series 230T Corsair 750w PSU I'm so excited!
If it's for gaming, you will not see any difference if you go with a cheaper i5. The same goes for the ram, 8 gb is good for gaming. 750W PSU is way overkill, if you don't plan on adding at least another graphics card. Haven't you heard about the memory issue of the 970? It has 4 gb but only uses 3,5 gb with its full speed. And the speed that was promoted is actually 28 GByte/s slower. And it has only 56 rop units instead of the 64 Nvidia claimed. And it has only 1792 KByte instead of 2048 KByte L2-Cache.If you get over 3,5 gb vram usage you get serious stuttering. Thats unacceptable for 350$. I would recommend a 290x, it actually uses its 4 gb and it's performance is really close to the 970 for 50$ less. Also if you play Battlefield 4 or any of the upcoming DICE games you get mantle support, which gives you a nice fps boost.
I know you're excited, and you should be, but if you cut down to 8gb of RAM and an i5 then you could actually pool a bit more money into a better motherboard that supports SLI... Other than that, it's a great build and i hope you have lots of fun doing it :)
I actually kind of like multi-part episodes. It's like a mini series. But I'm also a goober for either over explaining things myself, or listening to someone (like you Linus) explaining them to me, especially since you say it all in such an entertaining way. On that last note, props to anyone there at LMG involved in the scripts for these videos and Linus's excellent delivery.
Ashish Patel So are you going to buy an all in one Asus like my mom has and expect to drop new cooling on it? No. Stock cooled 4790ks hit 82c~ So what would you rather them do? Having an i7 in it is the best thing they can do. Even with the 10% throttle it will blow away an i5 and 8350. It's still faster than lower clocked i7s like the 4790 non K (3.5ghz, 3.9ghz boost) If they said it was a 4790 then no one would be complaining about throttling because it wouldn't be. See the issue? They allow higher clocks for when it can use them, but even throttled it still beats the next step down (4790) so there's not much to complain about.
Mansen Saying it's not a "real" case and it's the "wrong way" is stupid. This is a niche product, people don't buy it to upgrade it. You can't beat the imacs specs, footprint, and size building yourself. So holding the imac to standards that it was not made to, or meant to, achieve is stupid. You must really hate the Surface Pro 3 because you can't watercool it...
I switched to Macs back when they hit full-stride with Jobs' return and the switch to Intel processors, along with Ive's beautiful designs. I love the look and feel and the OS was soooo far ahead of Windows XP and later Vista. That said, WHAT THE HELL, APPLE?! Yeah, your machines are still beautiful, but YOU ARE KILLING YOUR POWER USERS! You stripped out the pro software features from your first party apps and even the OS (where did that built-in Apache server go?) and now you've fallen in love with underclocking otherwise high-end machines. My MacBook Pro does this. When I launch a game, I get a few minutes of glorious frame rates but then it goes to shit. Enough is enough. Either give us true performance, or I'm going back to building my own computers.
+Felipe Linares I use both on a daily basis and I love my MacBook Pro. I'm currently looking for a Windows laptop that has the same quality as the MBP. I'm actually thinking of just buying a second MBP and just using it as a Windows PC lol. I don't wanna dual boot with boot camp or use parallels.
I'll be honest and admit that I've been a loyal PC user for a long time and, while I certainly still value the price point for a custom built PC, the iMac is becoming more and more attractive to me. I think most of what the iMac offers is the aesthetics. The older I get, the less I enjoy having the mountain dew glow machine sitting in my bedroom with a bunch of wires sticking out of it. I would much rather have a sleek iMac sitting on my desk for a more sophisticated look. I know this doesn't matter to some people, but it's where I'm at these days. Also, that display just looks so nice. I find myself playing less and less games as I get older as well, so the gaming thing doesn't really bother me (I play league of legends maybe once a week, if that.) I think I'll pick up the new 5k iMac soon and see how it treats me.
@@CatboyGenius While AIO Windows PCs are great, their GPUs tend to be less optimized, and they generally include a 1080p display as opposed to the 5k display on a $1700 iMac.
For laptops, Macs ain't really that bad except for the Macbook 2015. I got late 2011 13 inch Macbook Pro, which I use the most for gaming. TF2: 60fps Medium-high settings Tomb Raider: 30fps medium GTA IV: 30fps medium CS:GO: 50fps medium Half-life 2: 60fps Max Apple Macbooks are great with the CPU Performance and battery life, which is pretty useful for gaming on the go. The only thing that bottlenecks is the GPU, which is really crappy.
+Calvin Laudrensio Get a retina MacBook pro... Your GPU problem will be solved. I have the 13inch 2015 MacBook Pro retina and I really can't complain about everything. I wish I had more than 128GB flash storage but I've got 2TB cloud storage and I'm getting a 128gb micro SD and adapter(custom fit for MBP) for extra storage.
+Calvin Laudrensio I'm sorry but those are horrible examples for games... TF2 CS:GO and HL2 can be run at hight setting on potatoes and get good frame rates. I could run them on my brothers crappy i3 laptop with 4gb ram and intel hd 4400 graphics at medium-high and still get about 60 fps.
lol Your $2000 MacBook has terrible FPS on those basic games XD my $1500 gaming laptop runs CS:GO max settings with 120 fps, TF2 on max setting with 90-100 fps and GTA V on Medium with 40-50 fps. Apple laptops are just made for scrolling through a Facebook feed.
+Diavolo222 I agree. There is no way you could do that. My gaming laptop has both a Nvidia GeForce 820m and an Intel HD 5500 graphics card onboard and after reading this tools comment I decided to test wether my 5500 could run those games at his proclaimed frame rates. Here's the results TF2- 30-40 fps, CS:GO 30 fps, and HL2 30-35 fps. And before you criticise the specs Mango, Intel Core i7, 16GB ram... No push over here.
I introduced myself to PC gaming through my moms 2012 Mac with boot camp. I loved it enough to buy my own gaming pc. But now I'm more into music production and that is WAY better on MACOS! The struggle is real, people.
Windows: Shitty but we are forced to use it if you want to get something done Linux: poor dev's and hipsters Mac: casual/Graphic Designers (overpriced but looks neat as heck)
Glad to see CoolerMaster still pushing out products. They have been around for so long. I remember when I used to be heavy into building gaming machines, that's all I would use is cooler Master .
I think multi-part episodes are fine as long as the delay between episode releases are maybe 2-3 days at max. Before you release the first one, have the next 3 done. Waiting weeks for the next episode is draining.
I've consistently found Mac's to consider quietness over heat dissipation. This could have done a little better if they had a better developed heatsink design and a higher performance fan that compensates for trying to be less noisy.
SniX because you just know the internet would putting videos on youtube of them turning the imac facedown, running prime and then frying eggs on the back of it for a "duur-huuurr, macs run too hot" moment.
The heat output of these components would still be the same, changing the dissipation would make it perform better. I don't see how it is wise to tell people you put a super CPU in the machine if you are just going to hamstring it with thermal issues!
***** I don't even need to run Prime 95 to get a Mac that hot. I can just as easily run some AE and Premiere Pro and get an iMac to nigh burn-your-hand levels of heat. I've done it several times on school and work iMacs. Lets not pretend that it takes a whole hell of a lot to overheat anything that Apple makes. Their reputation is in poor heat management.
TalesOfWar Most people would rely on a solid BIOS in order to setup cooling, not the OS itself. Seems to me the fault lies with the board manufacturer for a lack of proper fan controls. And all you're really saying here is that OSX doesn't even utilize the CPU towards its maximum potential. So why even have a top line i7 to begin with? Seems like a waste of money and resources if the OS can't even properly utilize the hardware presented to it.
It's sad when an intel stock cooler can make apple wet itself. Macintosh I mean. Um no not Big Mac...ugh why is this so complicated to explain to best pony!
TalesOfWar Again the EFI takes care of the thermal management, not the operating system. So it does not matter what OS is running. moreover Windows supports EFI, and needs no emulation.
TalesOfWar This was true of older iMAC's that ran an older EFI 1.0. Every iMAC ( Core 2 and up ) usees EFI 2.0 now, so Windows no longer need's this trick unless you are running and older 32 bit version of XP or vista.
Been exclusively Mac OSX since 2005; however, I just built an i7-4790k/GTX 980 rig to run X-Plane flight simulator. It's great at the sim, but being reintroduced to windows very quickly reminded me why I love OSX. Personally, I'll keep my iMac for everything but flight simming. My 2009 27" iMac is still running like new with minimal maintenance. Try that on a Windows machine. Can't imagine how many system restores I would have gone through over that past 7 years.
I don't give a crap what anyone says. I'm running a unix based operating system (hackintosh, not as stable as any imac) with native adobe support, which is what's important to me. As a graphic designer I always had an issue with windows 95 - vista crashing on me after long (8+) hours of work. I'm not saying macs/os x is perfect (yosemite definitely isn't.) but it works well for me. Including gaming on ultra settings.
macs for desktop is just a waste of time (unless you don't like building computers) but i much prefer macbook pro over any competing notebook stability, OS, performance and silence really cant be beat

Aesthetic Nerd Eh, for laptops it doesn't really matter - if you have to do serious work on a laptop, you're fucked either way. I like the multiple workspaces on a laptop, but I just hate OSX - I like the stodgy and orderly nature of Windows. Myself I just get refurbished laptops (like from Dell auctions) which are good enough and spend money on my desktop where it matters.
I've play most games on high/ultra 60 fps 1080p on the iMac the 3tb version. It's not worth the price if you only plan on gaming but for college, work and productivity it's one of the best and it also plays game about the same as a Next gen console. Build a PC if you only care about gaming.
***** last time I checked Mac couldnt handle minecraft let alone agar.io and when us PC users last checked we were more than half the population of russia and america and then on top of that can u even run a video without thermal throt?
Brendon I own both a Windows PC for gaming and a Superior Mac for everything else your point is. Lol you're sizing up already you PC nerds are pathetic you sit on your computer's and debate over which is better because you're so insecure about yourselfs. Get a fucking life.
My wife had a 2017 iMac that I realize may actually play Roguetech. I'm watching a let's play by Baradul and would like to play my steam copy. My old Thinkpad laptop, that I love, was not up to it, so I've never played it. I was so excited to see a old Linus tech tips house video to see what the iMac can do.
Great video! Interesting you compared tower cooling to all-in-one cooling... Also Apple is very specific when it comes to hardware for their software. I'm glad they do switch NVIDIA/AMD GPUs every other year or so but mainly the parts are chosen so that apps like Final Cut Pro X, Motion, and Logic work the best because those apps are optimized around those specs. It seems now AMD is the GPU of choice for these programs but we'll see in March if the next Macs get NVIDIA (hopefully 900 series). I know they will most likely get Thunderbolt 3/USB-C from what I was seeing at CES. My friend owns an Asus all-in-one with a 4K display and 960M GPU and it thermal throttles as well and it cost the same as the iMac granted it is a 2016 machine.
cause it's all about bang for buck. I can make a 1500 dollar gaming rig that blows a 2k+ iMac out of the water. Not only that, because it's a gaming rig it means it will also handle other CPU or GPU intensive tasks such as music/video editing. Basically, you spend over 2k buying a computer that is only good at a few things while you could spend 500 dollars less on a machine that does everything really well. That's the problem I have with iMacs
No you buy a Mac because its APPLE, Its overpriced for what you get, nothing about it makes it special, this is a 3k plus machine and it only has an i5 processor? Like they couldn't throw in an i7?... SMH Apple disgusts me at how they limit their users and put out products that only look nice but in fact have mediocre components that perform like shit.
i know it sounds stupid but people are actually thinking macs are for gaming loads of my friends bought macbook airs for gaming and a girl at my high school says that macs have better graphics than windows
Macs have never been about performance. I've both built my own PC and own a macbook pro, and theyre both for entirely different things. Using Garageband and Logic are amazing experiences, and iMovie is great as well. Excellent software that is very easy to use. The OS also has an amazing ecosystem, as I can text on my laptop, use handoff to continue web browsing, and macbooks have an excellent DAC if you're into audiophile type stuff. That being said, my macbook doesnt have the horsepower for any serious computing like gaming or handling large spreadsheets. Macs are what I'd consider a good second computer, as theyre more of an add-on to an already capable PC.
A someone who uses one of these iMacs I can say that gaming works fairly fine, I can run the mac Version of Elite: Dangerous at 4k with custom graphics settings (Ultra with the shadows on low and AA lowered to MSAA) with it hovering at around 40 fps. Though the best use I found for it is 3d modeling using blender, which has native retina display support.
tjhill0110 tech reviews are for first or 2nd world's audiences. Why would people in poverty watch this? Or primitive tribes watch gadgets related stuff
It's a Mac. Apple built the hardware for OS X. It's also a newer machine, so support is limited outside of OS X. Don't know what anyone was really expecting. Build a PC if you want Windows.
+Justin Hall -_- Dude, an Intel i5 is an Intel i5, the parts used in a iMac has the EXACT same standards as the parts used in a windows machine, or a linux machine When buying a mac, you sacrifice performance for status.
The most comprehensive review of an iMac 27 ever!! But btw you can get 5k resolution on Windows Boot camp in a Late 2015 5k iMac 27" (5120x2880) - out of the box without having to play around with any system settings/tweaks.. Maybe it was an update from Apple/Microsoft/AMD sometime after this video was made :)
Considering Macs are industry standard for graphics-related fields (graphic design, photography, film editing, etc), yes lol It's also the standard for the music industry.
+Polygod considering I work in at least one of these industries and work with people in the others, I think I would know over you, some stranger on the Internet. but okay :)
One thing that apple has to their advantage is that they can adapt their software to their hardware, where microsoft has to make their OS compatible with much more diverse hardware.
That is not how that works at all. For things like GPUs, it's the GPU manufacturer's that make the Windows drivers for their products, same thing with motherboard. Like Linus said, Apple does have better driver validation, but then you can end up with peripherals that don't work on Macs at all because they have no drivers for OSX.
Apple can still adapt their software to their hardware. They know exactly which processer, RAM or GPU their products have and know exactly how far they can push the software before the hardware starts shitting bricks.
did you play 2k? did you play 4k? 2k is amazing, my monitor is 25" and 2560x1440 resolution, and I love how games look on it. I have no doubts, that 4k would even more impressive
It depends on your system. For most systems 1080p probably is a good spot to be, as going higher would result in too low fps. In my case I just bought a GTX 1070; it'd be kinda pointless to spend that much on a GPU just to run 1080p. So I bought a 2K (1440p 144Hz) monitor. It definitely looks better than 1080p, and I get around 100 fps in most games, which I'm quite happy with. Then there's another big jump to 4K. The GTX 1070 gets like 40-50 fps at 4K; the low fps of 4K isn't worth the resolution increase. You need a pretty beastly system to run 4K well. If you had a GTX 1080 or something I doubt you'd be satisfied with a 1080p monitor. But yes, 1080p still looks reasonably good and you can certainly enjoy your games on it.
Didn't Linus say in one of these parts that the Mac is built for very "specific" types of people? He did say that right? As a long time Pc user who recently switched to mac, I can understand where he is coming from. I liked the windows experience in windows 7 and xp, vista was horrendous and destroyed my old computer in the end. The pc I have now has similar specs (minus a good graphics card. Pretty crappy but I'm not a gamer) and much less ram/storage. Personally however, when I switched to mac, I fell in love almost instantly. For music producers and content creators (like myself) Mac just flows more nicely as a workstation IN MY OPINION. PC is perfect for gamers and the "build your own rig" enthusiasts that I also am, but for what I do, and the experience I prefer, Mac has gotten my attention whole heartedly. I use to hate Macs until I tried them Honestly, and Now I'm glad I have one. Try them out just for fun at your local apple store! The experience is still really awesome!
Meh, I prefer mac and it's lasted me a while so I feel like my money was well spent especially since my current job uses Mac OSX, it's benefited me in practicing at home with the Software we use: Logic Pro X and Final Cut Pro X
The Gallagher Experience Owning a Mac is an experience in itself, yes it has the higher price point but for free OS X upgrades and a pretty sleek looking machine that barely takes up space, it's actually beautiful. Sure beats paying for Windows mistakes in OS. XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1 would've at least cost $800. For the job it does, it does it well, even using adobe creative suite, it sure beats the windows machine in terms of usability, everything feels seamless
I am a Mac user and I noticed Apple always make a solid PC at a premium price, that if you were to max out the options in the Apple store. It is a jack of all trades PC and can hold its own when gaming native Mac than Windows. I buy my Mac games on Steam and I like the performance. I think the new iMacs are up to the task for Oculus Rift gaming since the iMac specs meet the required specs on the Oculus Rift's webpage. I strongly recommend the iMac for those who want to be liberated from Microsoft and want to still us Windows based software when needed to. It's always best to play native games since those games will be optimized for Macs.
tipoomaster a couple cards. You can put a couple cards. One will be making left 2,5k second will be making right half of screen. Anyway 5k monitor controller is working through 2 wasy
Tats Zindi You'd still only have 2GB graphics memory, yeah, it has to mirror the contents of each memory pool directly. Though since we're talking about an iMac, this discussion makes no sense anyways, single soldered in card.
why wouldn't you be able to game with a 980M? people think that the mobile version of the GPUs are crap, I mean they're expensive and not as powerful as the desktop version but a 980M is still very powerful
I have an Imac 5k and I'm not even in the wildest dreams a mac geek. Actually I ran away from mac all my life cause I'm a programmer and mac wasnt for me. Anyway I was almost forced to buy a mac to create apps for ios, iwatch and macos cause the market for it is appealing. That said I can say I'm loving my imac, possibly cause I'm not a gammer, but for programming and design (with wacom cintiq) its way better then all my windows PC's cause the one PC I builted that is way stronger then the imac does such noise with the fans that I cant focus on what I'm doing... A silent computer for me is a good thing, also I totally love the design and the aluminum body. For games, I only played some flight simulators and I actually liked. I just subscribed your channel but I'm seeing your videos for abouta month now. I would really like if you could make a video for a equiped desk for programmers and designers cause there's a lot of matherial webdesigners, system programmers and robotic builders as me need to work and there's a ton of options to choose from. (its not easy to choose) This is what I'm using now, just to give a clue... Samsung laptop with i7 processor and Nvidea graphics iMac 5k with 32gb of ram and 1TB ssd ipad pro for testing my apps iphone 5 and 6 also for testing Samsung galaxy 5s mini for testing android Assus android tablet Cintiq 23HD touch (for design and illustration) Canon 7D Phantom 3 pro with 4k camera 2 HDD external drives for backup 1 480gb external SSD also for backup Arduino and raspbery pie processors and a bunch of parts for electronic/robotic experiments and projects Rode NT-USB for voice hovers on my videos Beats Solo 2 (Silver special edition) that I use to listen to music while working and o edit the sound on some of the videos Brother laser printer (2135 series) Canon A3 printer (color) and a bunch of cables, docks, stands (for the beats, phones, and other stuff), a cheap gaming controler cause I'm programming a few games also (just starting), some usb hubs (have 2 but only using one at the moment) So... can you make some videos aimed to designers and developers? Thank you in advance
+ZR1Terror In concept, it is better. On release though, it was infested with bugs (pun intended) that it just wasn't that much of an enjoyable experience and felt unfinished. Even now, it is still buggy and this OS was tested by the user base for like a year or even more
+ZR1Terror i'm not so sure. windows 10 is good on the surface, but behind the scenes it's the most intrusive and invasive windows ever. in truth, vanilla windows 10 is utter crap. you HAVE to hack the fuck out of it for it to be a decent OS. or just not mind the fact the MS owns your computer, not you.
+GraveUypo I had the Surface Pro 3 i5 8GB RAM model before I got my MacBook Pro 15" and even on my Surface Pro, it was buggy. I installed Linux on it to just avoid Windows 10. Though, for some reason, Windows 10 runs surprisingly well on my MacBook Pro with none of the issues I had on Surface Pro 3.
I wonder if this series will come back any day? Maybe not right now but whenever the next iMac launches. As a Mac guy (yeah, yeah, bring the hate, I'm used to it. At this point it's like a mosquito bite in the summer) it's really interesting to hear the opinions of a windows guy who isn't totally biased.
***** Yeah, that's.. not an option for me, considering Windows 8 sucks and I won't give Microsoft the privilege of knowing how many pictures I've opened and who knows what else, so Windows 10 sucks as well. It's not really free if you're paying for it in other ways.
+apocalypseap I know this is an old comment, but Windows 8.1 is certainly not my favourite windows OS, almost all of my problems are alleviated once I purchased Start8 from Stardock. I know you shouldn't have to pay money to get a start menu back, but you get all the benefits of having a more up to date operating system and sacrifice very little, aside from a couple of bucks.
I noticed something in how OS X behave when Intel is around... Why does it rack up like a cat that just saw a red dot? i might be clueless but i noticed this too when i hackintoshed my Acer E5 and fired up DiRT 2...the fan was shooting hot air !
***** Hardware-wise : if you need (let's say : a Mac Pro Hackintoshed-build PC) it would cost you x4 more than the Mac Pro itself...Windows runs a bit slower on Macs because (i might be worng because i did not test it) OS X is still running in the background when Windows is on Via BootCamp
***** Well that's something new to me considering how scarce Macs are here... Another thing : what i meant by "x4 the cost" is Performance-Wise...Same Hardwares would cost you around 1200$ yes
***** I'll try to keep it simple because i have a limited-yet-researched information i have. Yes : In the World of PCs and "Mast-hurr race-durr" the Specs are more important than the idea of a VERY low clocked Processor in a iMac or a Mac Pro can compete with a Price-Wise similar PC build...GeekBench says everything. It's not the same case for Smartphones (Apple's A9 and A8X wrecks Exynos 7420 and Snapdragon 810 in New cheat-less Antutu Benchmarks ) but that's not the point of this Topic.
im a big fan of apple and i find your review unbiased and realistic, even though mac and OS X has its own downsides i find it way more pleasing to use then windows.
5K display and you can't even run most games in 4K. What a joke! 1080p games would look ugly on that screen due to all the pixels being stretched. Even worse if you have to lower it to 720p.
You're an asshat. Not even a GTX 980 can run everything at 4K. And he shown himself playing Crysis 3 at 1440p you idiot. That's pretty good. Better than your 1080p monitor fool
This whole video is way too anti-Mac. I'm telling you that because I game a lot on my iMac 27" from late 2012 and actually enjoy it a lot. Yes, it's by no means a COST EFFECTIVE solution, but with the OS being more stable and more and more native Mac games appearing, it has actually started to become a relevant alternative. I don't get the Mac bashing at all... aside from how you really shouldn't want to run Bootcamp / Parallels and so on to run Windows on a Mac. It was designed for anything but that. The more native Mac gaming you do, the better the experience. And yes, I do play games at 1440p whenever possible and no the hardware even in this older iMac 27" seems to be fairly capable of running games in that resolution. Sure.. it's no 5K and I am sure no PC can run 5K resolutions without issues either... but come on, *you can game on Mac and it's awesome*.
He doesn't hate the Mac, but he doesn't like a lot of things about it. If you can't deal with the fact that not everyone likes Macs even after using them extensively, you're a fanboy and a child. Macs aren't for everyone, just like Windows, Linux, iOS, and Android aren't for everyone (though I'm sure that you'll also say that iOS is perfect). He also said that the gaming experience was good. He didn't complain about the gaming experience at all, so I don't see how that would have changed his opinion even if the performance is a little better. In fact, if the native experience ended up somehow beating the 980M, it would prove that Apple purposefully made Windows perform as badly as they could, which Linus would have ripped on even more. They shouldn't even give the option if they're going to fuck everyone over for using it.
NDogg15 The point I made was about gaming on Mac. Not him disliking Mac in general. To each his or her own. But stating iMacs aren't potentially good enough to game on is simply a false statement. It should not ever surprise anyone how emulated Windows stuff performs worse than OSX based stuff. It's just how it works, regardless of which virtual machine you choose. I don't think you can really get a clean Windows only experience on any Mac.
Yah right you fucking liar gaming on 32 bit games isn't gaming let play metro last light on your mac and see the outcome macs are not for gaming end of story if you want to game use a gaming computer or a console it's not what they're made for.
NDogg15 > "If you can't deal with the fact that not everyone likes Macs even after using them extensively, you're a fanboy and a child." > Can't deal with someone who doesn't like Windows, and is behaving like a windows fanboy and a child. Shit goes both ways my dude.
Anthony Olivieri I have Metro Last Light through steam on Mac. It works fine and runs @1440p with all settings maxed out at a frame rate consistently over 60fps. The high-end Macs *can* do gaming and my iMac doesn't have a mobile graphics card in case you think so. There's literally no reason why Macs would suck at gaming, aside from how there simply aren't that many games released with a native Mac version support.... that's really all there is to it. All else is dumb fanboy nonsense coming from mostly just jealous Windows users or people who simply do not care about Mac. That's fine with me. But don't go claim Macs can't do gaming, because Metro Last Light, one of the most taxing games around DOES run fine on Mac.
Wow, this is the first (and ONLY) fairly unbiased review of an Apple product. it is actually missing some stuff but it covered the main things in a very unapologetic way (like every other Apple prodcut review ever written). Thank you!
Software sells hardware. That is why professionals at least by macs. Final cut pro x and Logic Pro X alone are fanfucking tastic programs that have an ease of use about them i have yet to see on any other Daw or Nle. Granted there is premier pro but adobe really shit in our soup by making us buy a fucking subscription to use the damn program. Also Logic is a great value when compared to other Daws that don't come with plugins and samples included. Plus you can game on this bad boy too so you get some sweet returns if used as a professional / goof of machine with a preference for apple software. If you dont like em then why bother bitching? Get windows, pay less, use other software and get over it.
+Lsdude420 oh god no premier pro is horrible, i got a free copy of it with my laptop and it's complete shit. laggy, not user friendly, and, for some weird reason, won't render things in anything above 720p. and the videos i used were like 1080p to 2k! but yeah, logic is great.
Mayban36 | TASÓ no, i'm certain it was premier pro. dude, the license in the program even said, same with the install disks and programs list. well, it does have an i3 core, sooooo....
Adobe requires CUDA cores for best squeeze of its potentiality. NVIDIA cores are best optimized for Adobe usage. any editing software require CUDA cores for best performance. use titan x you can justify your both gaming need and editing
A mate of mine was given one of these iMacs as a review sample and sent it back due to the graphics chipset being woefully underpowered and he doesn't game. Its first generation technology so its worth the space on your desk if you do Illustrator or Photoshop or edit photography all day.
Now sure why it's a question as to whether or not you can 'game' on a Mac. These things are infinitely more capable than most other laptops and towers (and especially other all-in-ones) that you can find at the store today. It seems to me that someone would ACTUALLY credit a $350 Acer 1/3 desktop over a 5K iMac for gaming, given their general bias.
***** I'm not talking about the user friendliness. Mac OSX is way better, but you could technically install it on any computer. I'm referring to the hardware quality, especially evident in laptops. I have yet to be impressed by any of the computer hardware that other manufacturers create. Also, I've seen plenty of overpriced Windows PCs, like $1000+ HP laptops that boast similar or lesser specs than those of a Mac, and still feature crappy hardware.
+maccollectorZ (Commenting Account) You sir, are very ignorant and need to learn the basic concept of return and diminishing return, which Varun was mentioning. You say we Windows people are biased but fail to see the hypocrisy in your own statements. There is a reason why us "Windows people" have a tendency to hate on "unbiased" people like you: you simply talk out of your ass, blinded by Apple's remarkable marketing and propaganda. Now you are probably angry, but do not be alarmed, ignorance can be easily cured by information and education; however, if you don't open your mind and accept new, relevant and convincing information, that makes you stupid, which is unfortunately incurable.
+maccollectorZ (Commenting Account) I built a gaming PC for $350 lol and it's not too bad it can run battlefield on medium setting at 1080p. And i saved... Oh, I don't know around $1000 then going with a shit Mac.
+Spooky spooky you fucking casul cod is a peasent game don't even pretend to step up to us PC master lords we are of a different race my friend... the master race
Most people are complaining about the price of imac 5k. But compare it to the same PC build WITH a 5K monitor and you will see that it is actually cheaper to buy iMac. Plus you don't have to allocate place for a PC under your desk, connect unnecesary wires for camera, micro and stuff and you get a mouse with a keyboard as a bonus
I tried to run Minecraft on a PowerMac G5...... 1.5.1 runs at 60fps with med settings. I'm not even mad, that machine is 13 years old.Newer versions won't run due to java outdated.I should try to install Linux, it might have a solution for this outdated java.
+FormaxLt Do some research, this Powermac runs the PowerPC architecture and not the Intel. Newer versions of Java are for Intel/AMD architecture only, not for PowerPC
as expected, not good for gaming. Surely a cpu running at 100degrees cant be good for the longevity of it. I'd love to know what operating temps the gpu got to as well. I must mention this as it somewhat relates A guy at work was arguing with me the other day telling me that most hardcore computer gamers use macs and i laughed in his face and directed him to many benchmarks and statistics (I'll probably show him this too) but he stuck to his 'facts' lol. If any others out there here the same, please educate these idiots, why pay twice what the hardware is worth?? No wonder the world is in debt with companies like this around.. I honestly wish bankruptcy on Apple, who needs em? So sick of all the i-crap, come up with a new name for fuck sake lol
Not good for gaming? So running Crysis 3 at 1440p Medium settings 60+fps isn't good? The CPU hit 100c when running mulithreaded workloads. When gaming you'd be looking at no more than 50% load on the cpu. Running BF4 1080p Ultra at 120+fps on my 4790k 4.5ghz and gtx 970 it stays around 50% load. If I cap it to 60fps it drops to 25% load. The iMac's cpu won't be getting as hot as it would when say encoding a video. Use your brain. Also for day to day use I find OSX much better than Windows, although it seems they removed some features on Yosemite from Linus' video. When windows comes up with a search that can compete with Spotlight and a suite like iLife that's bundled with the software (something I REALLY miss about my macbook) then it will be more on par with OSX in day to day usage.
Andrew Russell You can get the same performance with half the price, and since you can't take advantage of the 5k display for gaming, the extra cost of the display is pointless. I'd rather buy a triple monitor configuration with that price tag.
CRBASF2 Wrong. You can't get a pc AND a 5k display that match for half the price. In OSX you can game in 5k, just not Windows, yet, which is Windows fault. Triple monitor is nice but seeing as this iMac isn't made for gaming but video/picture editing, triple monitor wouldn't do the same. Also a lot of people don't like the bezel of triple.
Andrew Russell I said that I could get the same gaming performance for half the price, and for the same price of an imac 5k, I'd prefer to spend it in a triple monitor configuration since you can't take advantage of the 5k display.
CRBASF2 just on windows you can't game at 5k YET. 4k is still really good though. So you can take advantage of the 5k, just not fully in windows. But this isn't made for gamers, it was NEVER their market. It's like me making fun of a Surface Pro because it can't up be upgrade or have water cooling.
I typically use custom fan profiles on mac and pc, especially on my mac laptops, I increase the base fan speed and make the profile slightly more aggressive. I also manually set a higher fan speed before I start heavy workloads it seems to help because you seem to get to a point of no return shifting between throttling and erratic fan speeds on very high load. Not typically a problem in a proper desktop machine more an issue for me on portables. The iMac is basically laptop parts after all.
Why did I buy TWO macs?. An iMac and a Macbook Pro Retina. BECAUSE I LIKE THE OS AND DIDN'T MIND SPENDING THE MONEY, even though you can buy better specs if you build your own or buy a pre-made PC. Is that too hard to understand? lol. The PC master race are really dick-ish about those who buy macs! I LIKE MAC OS, I like the workflow, the speed, the shortcuts and gestures, etc. Yes, Windows might have all that crap, but I like Mac OS better so I bought a Mac.... duh! Anyway, I also like to play games, I play casual games as LoL, Minecraft, Rust, WoW, and old classics as AoE II, Warcraft, etc. and they run JUST FINE. So please, any of you prepotent PC owners (not all of you), tell me how what I did was wrong? how is it wrong to like my OS, the aesthetics of my devices? the fact that they last forever without slowing down (yes, that part is a big plus, since all the cheap PC's, 500- to 700 bucks that have be bought by family members start sucking after the second year while my 5 year old iMac is still running fine)
+JustThaor But the thing is, if you're only going to be playing casual games, literally ANY computer that isn't complete garbage would have worked fine. And your family members are obviously doing something wrong if their 2 year old PCs are having problems. And a 5 year old iMac would be running what? A Core2 Duo? I have like 10 of those salvaged from 6 year old, scrap school computers, and they all work fine too.
+LiquidPanic I would like to play more serious games, but they either don't run on my Macs (low fps, low graphics) or they don't exist. Quad core I'm not sure, maybe they didn't buy the best, although they were Hps, toshibas and lenovo and seemed good on paper. I thought they would just last, but they really slow down over time.
+JustThaor I'll chip in on that, every single HP computer I disassembled myself or heard other people tell stories about in the last couple of years had performance issues due to overheating, 90% of which was fixed by repasting. Run speedfan on the notebook under load, are the cpu and gpu temperatures over 70? If so, buy some mx-4 thermal paste (4g of it is pretty cheap and should be enough for at least 3-4 notebooks with dedicated gpus, shelf life isn't bad either), get some tiny screwdrivers and you should be able to bump up your performance back to comfortable levels. (other brands can of course use the maintenance too, it's just that HP computers are notorious for their abyssmal thermal paste durability and general overheating issues). The first thing to do though should be checking the hdds, if the devices were used frequently, and on the move or any nonstatic environment, hdds could be quite worn down by now and that's a huge performance drop too.
+Jakub Odvárka I understand what you're saying, thanks by the way. But when you buy a stock machine, shouldn't it just run? and just let people avoid the hassle of having to make repairs? I like macs a lot because of the OS and their built quality, they seem to have very strict and high quality control mechanisms at their factories.
+JustThaor Oh of course it runs, and you can avoid the hassle... until the warranty runs out. Then it's in the manufacturer's best interest if the device somehow sneakily starts to loose performance or outright becomes broken/unusable. Shit's not fair, but that's how they keep having a bussiness, at least 50% of casual users don't even consider doing much else but blowing some compressed air inside and then they go buy a new device... There's a very neat slang in my native language for intentional flaws designed to impede or break something inside or the whole device once the manufacturer's idea of product life-cycle runs its course : "kurvítko", loosely translated as umm, the "fuckupthing". Cheap thermal paste is one of HP's. The combined lightning cable in the new iPhones is an example of Apple's own "fuckupthing" - one of your mics, 3,5jack, charging, usb, etc, any of the things which are all in one assembly, suddenly broke? Well you better go and buy the whole one-cable-for-all awesome thing assembly. We're even shorter on stock than the actual devices on launch, so hey, it won't come cheap. Oh and is it perhaps after warranty? You think you can do it yourself? Better buy some expensive screwdrivers, because we don't want you anywhere near the internals of your purchased device with something as simple as a Phillips driver. Apple... well.. I like the design, sure, they aren't very afraid of using new tech, but they sneakily try it out on their own customers with minor releases. On the other hand, HW in their devices is, apart from displays, VERY sub-par, at least considering the pricetag. They have stuff neatly optimized, but that's quite easier to do on closed systems with no compatibility (often even no backwards compatibility, because "Hey, you aren't really using a 4 year old macbook, are you? So uncooool bro!") in mind. But... watch the "watercooled macbook" in this guy's channel to get an idea. Is a workstation (not a low performance netbook/tablet designed just to surf the net) with passive only heat management a good idea? Lol no. Does it look good, sleek, cool and hip? Sure. Does it bring enough performance to justify the pricetag? Maybe it would, IF you could use the damn thing for more than 3 minutes without heating up to very apparent throttling temperatures... But I digress, I don't want to start or even take part in another Apple vs PC rant :)
+Jade Hokage compared to a custom built PC I'm afraid it can. Crisis can run on the highest settings at a solid 60fps. especially on the gtx 980. And I quote that a custom built PC is cheaper than buying the imacs/mac products in general. You can buy 5k monitors as well
This video explains a lot. I own a macbook pro and an iMac. I do run many simulations via virtual machines which I usually assign 50% of macbook pro's processing power and 100% of iMac's processing power. As expected, macbook pro's fans go full speed after a while but I never ever hear any fan noise with my iMac. I actually thought the fans were not working properly up to this point. This video clarifies it.
Personally, I could never find myself using an iMac as a main/gaming machine. While being an avid Apple user since the dawn of Windows 7, after becoming seriously frustrated with Vista, one thing that always stuck with me is upgradability. I tend to buy slightly older machines, and upgrade them as needed, which is why I'm sticking to an '07 Mac Pro. I like the quality control of components, server-grade hardware, and the peace of mind of a stable OS, all while being able to add custom components to give gaming some breathing room. With boot camp, I'm able to play any game on my Mac Pro.
***** So it's right in between Windows and iOS? :P
Fedora and Mint are also good distro choices. Things aren't too bad for installing as long as you found a good repository.
Starting with Arch Linux??? You'll scare any new user away. Start with something easy like Ubuntu.
Multipart episodes don't bother me that much. As long as you guys produce enough content for my daily visual appetite, I'm happy.
mmap? Who thought id see u here xD
Yes
$3000+ computer runs Crisis at medium settings at 1080p? How bout no?
I can't upvote this enough. and the cpu throttles too, it is basically inferior in every single way
Nightstalker Gaming $3000 Computer (not built for gaming) runs Crisis 3 at medium settings at 60fps/1080p with a mobile GPU? How about yes? Also, what idiot would buy this for gaming? Linus done this test specifically to see if the 5K iMac can game, which it can.
james campbell
This computer was built with gaming parts. One might logically assume that such parts might actually, oh I don't know...play games?
***** those parts are there so it can even run 5k so yes you can use them for gaming but they weren't put there for it.
***** the parts were put there to run the 5k not to play games
the 740 dislikes on this vid were Dota 2 players that got offended at their game being called "casual"
+SoylentGamer I guess it also applies for League Of Legends...
Kyon But dota players get way more butthurt.
+SoylentGamer Insecurity of LoL players needing to post such comments. Coming from a LoL player.
Dekomori Sanae I play both.
SoylentGamer What a coincidence, me too.
My friend uses mac mainly for his preference of finalcut pro
Lawlzinator A prius also doesn't cost twice as much as a dragster.

Nah I like it when they stretch it as long as possible, especially with the whole room water cooling videos.

less of a gap between console and apple then it'll be perf
+AndroidRekt “Gaming” Tutorials but some people think it's worth it for the ascetics (I don't)
***** for gaming yes, for design... not really
A console is sub 300$ mate
Guys! I just bought the parts for the new PC I'm building. It's my first build!
i7 4790
Gigabyte GTX 970
16gb RAM Corsair Vengeance
128gb Crucial SSD
2tb 7200rpm Hard Drive
ASUS ATX DDR3 2600 LGA 1150 Motherboard H97-PLUS
Corsair Graphite Series 230T
Corsair 750w PSU
I'm so excited!
My build that I just did is pretty similar, only I went with the G1 980.
Get a 250gb ssd. 120 is not enough tbh
I know you're excited, and you should be, but if you cut down to 8gb of RAM and an i5 then you could actually pool a bit more money into a better motherboard that supports SLI... Other than that, it's a great build and i hope you have lots of fun doing it :)
better than a Mac to be honest...
I would give it a pass if it didn't throttle.
Throttling, especially on a machine designed for work, is totally unacceptable.
it's only throttling about 200-400mhz, that's not much performance loss for a silent, tiny, sexy, all in one enclosure.
Andrew Russell
lmfao. still like the guy said it is unacceptable. when you cant add your own cooling
Ashish Patel
So are you going to buy an all in one Asus like my mom has and expect to drop new cooling on it? No.
Stock cooled 4790ks hit 82c~
So what would you rather them do? Having an i7 in it is the best thing they can do. Even with the 10% throttle it will blow away an i5 and 8350. It's still faster than lower clocked i7s like the 4790 non K (3.5ghz, 3.9ghz boost) If they said it was a 4790 then no one would be complaining about throttling because it wouldn't be. See the issue? They allow higher clocks for when it can use them, but even throttled it still beats the next step down (4790) so there's not much to complain about.
Andrew Russell No they're probably going to buy a REAL case and do everything the proper way.
You must really hate the Surface Pro 3 because you can't watercool it...
from 50° to 80° in 10 seconds? holy smokes
is it C or F?
Celsius.
pfffff, my i7 4720HQ goes from 50 to 90 in less than 5
Felyne Master Dang
How about a fan?or a water cooling system?
It's cuz of thermal throttling
so basically, Mac users hate that they're using Macs.
+put it in No.
Now steve is dead and now mac is worse then before
I'll be honest and admit that I've been a loyal PC user for a long time and, while I certainly still value the price point for a custom built PC, the iMac is becoming more and more attractive to me.
Just buy an All In One Windows PC. They're about the same price or less with more efficiency. Plus they usually look pretty good.

TF2: 60fps Medium-high settings
Tomb Raider: 30fps medium
GTA IV: 30fps medium
CS:GO: 50fps medium
Half-life 2: 60fps Max
Apple Macbooks are great with the CPU Performance and battery life, which is pretty useful for gaming on the go.
Diavolo222 ok
lol Your $2000 MacBook has terrible FPS on those basic games XD my $1500 gaming laptop runs CS:GO max settings with 120 fps, TF2 on max setting with 90-100 fps and GTA V on Medium with 40-50 fps.
Windows: Shitty but we are forced to use it if you want to get something done
Linux: poor dev's and hipsters
Mac: casual/Graphic Designers (overpriced but looks neat as heck)
if you actually gave a shit about looks, then you would spend some time making it look better, instead of crying and throwing money at apple
Poor devs? Explain why government offices use Linux. And I wouldn't say hipster, more like enthusiasts? Geeks? Nerds? Somewhere around there.
Nah, Linux the best OS
But linux has poor gaming support
Marko Mijanović No, devs don't make enough games for Linux, that's not Linux's fault, that's the developer's fault
if it makes you feel better apple spent alot of money marketing this 5k mac. makes a nice high end paper weight.

This could have done a little better if they had a better developed heatsink design and a higher performance fan that compensates for trying to be less noisy.

because you just know the internet would putting videos on youtube of them turning the imac facedown, running prime and then frying eggs on the back of it for a "duur-huuurr, macs run too hot" moment.
The heat output of these components would still be the same, changing the dissipation would make it perform better. I don't see how it is wise to tell people you put a super CPU in the machine if you are just going to hamstring it with thermal issues!
Shinomori Ryuichi
It's Apple's key negative point, they favor aesthetic in lieu of sensibility.
*****
I don't even need to run Prime 95 to get a Mac that hot.
TalesOfWar
Most people would rely on a solid BIOS in order to setup cooling, not the OS itself.
The throttling of the CPU is a big problem when you think that this is aimed at Prosumer's. and others people who need the CPU horse power.
It's sad when an intel stock cooler can make apple wet itself.
Macintosh I mean. Um no not Big Mac...ugh why is this so complicated to explain to best pony!
The EFI handles the thermal management, so the temperatures you see in windows would be the same under OSX.
***** ;P

Benjamin Wiseman depends on your laptop... for mac money you can get fairly decent hardward such as quad core and good graphics
Aesthetic Nerd except its a waste of money
***** you're a fucking moron
Mac pro rocks my rig, very happy with it. I use it because it's small, powerful and because OSX. F*cking expensive though
I've play most games on high/ultra 60 fps 1080p on the iMac the 3tb version. It's not worth the price if you only plan on gaming but for college, work and productivity it's one of the best and it also plays game about the same as a Next gen console. Build a PC if you only care about gaming.
another mac user. You are all the same.
Brendon You windows user's are all the same. Always sizing up to Macs because your smaller then us.
***** Great troll bro XD
My friend owns an Asus all-in-one with a 4K display and 960M GPU and it thermal throttles as well and it cost the same as the iMac granted it is a 2016 machine.
iMac: Bright Screen!
2:00
Linus: Theres nothing special about the mac!
iMac:Oh... "Lowers Brightness"
an imac isnt meant for gaming. Macs are not meant for gaming. *THEN WHY THE HELL IS EVERYONE TRYING TO COMPARE GAMING RIGS TO MACS*
cause it's all about bang for buck.
HamsterWheelGaming I think it might have been a way to try and find out a proper use case for this machine. Just a hunch.
HamsterWheelGaming Lorne TC I buy a Mac for the simplicity of osx and apple perks, like fcpx. Not to game
I decided to get the regular Apple iMac instead of the 5k iMac and spent the extra money on upgrades. So far I'm really happy.
Linus, dare you call League of Legends casual? It gets so intense and competitive. Best game ever.
Casual in the system requirement sense
Dude if you think LoL is the best game ever then you need to sit in a quiet corner and think about what you have said.
LinusTechTips 144htz league master race
It's casual for your GPU, you probably want to overclock your brain though.
It's pretty casual bro
Since I realised he has two earrings I cant unsee them.
A someone who uses one of these iMacs I can say that gaming works fairly fine, I can run the mac Version of Elite: Dangerous at 4k with custom graphics settings (Ultra with the shadows on low and AA lowered to MSAA) with it hovering at around 40 fps. Though the best use I found for it is 3d modeling using blender, which has native retina display support.
love this! best web presenter ever
This channel should be renamed to "First world problems"
tjhill0110 tech reviews are for first or 2nd world's audiences. Why would people in poverty watch this? Or primitive tribes watch gadgets related stuff
It's a Mac. Apple built the hardware for OS X. It's also a newer machine, so support is limited outside of OS X. Don't know what anyone was really expecting. Build a PC if you want Windows.
Shouldn't say "built" but "chose"
+Justin Hall -_- Dude, an Intel i5 is an Intel i5, the parts used in a iMac has the EXACT same standards as the parts used in a windows machine, or a linux machine
When buying a mac, you sacrifice performance for status.
+Justin Hall You can edit your comments you know...
wildanS I don't think it really matters. I don't particularly care about that, but thanks?
*Facepalm*
The most comprehensive review of an iMac 27 ever!! But btw you can get 5k resolution on Windows Boot camp in a Late 2015 5k iMac 27" (5120x2880) - out of the box without having to play around with any system settings/tweaks.. Maybe it was an update from Apple/Microsoft/AMD sometime after this video was made :)
So basically the 5k iMac is best for photo editing, light video editing, and basic web surfing.
and slight to casual gaming
Considering Macs are industry standard for graphics-related fields (graphic design, photography, film editing, etc), yes lol It's also the standard for the music industry.
+TylerGrrrl not really at all actually
+Polygod considering I work in at least one of these industries and work with people in the others, I think I would know over you, some stranger on the Internet. but okay :)
nah ur wrong lol
Am I the only one who thinks 1080p is just right for gaming?
Reflexesofgod76 you've probably never seen any 4k+ media that's why you think that
kevin Rudd I did actually. But you don't need a 4k monitor to enjoy games
Reflexesofgod76 true. But some people include the look of the game into its quality level
did you play 2k? did you play 4k?
I did this too my Mac and I can play most games from 2013 and back perfectly fine but I'm building a PC in 3 days and I'm super excited
Meh, I prefer mac and it's lasted me a while so I feel like my money was well spent especially since my current job uses Mac OSX, it's benefited me in practicing at home with the Software we use:
Logic Pro X and Final Cut Pro X
The Gallagher Experience Owning a Mac is an experience in itself, yes it has the higher price point but for free OS X upgrades and a pretty sleek looking machine that barely takes up space, it's actually beautiful.
Sure beats paying for Windows mistakes in OS. XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1 would've at least cost $800.
For the job it does, it does it well, even using adobe creative suite, it sure beats the windows machine in terms of usability, everything feels seamless
It's processing. Chill the fuck out lol.
4k now xD
and here is linus complaining about 4k not being "clear" enough xD
Did you pay attention at all? 4k on a 5k screen is what he's complaining about, look at the obvious issues on his example.
@Sean Anderson wooooosh
It's always best to play native games since those games will be optimized for Macs.
but can it run cr... oh, yes it can!
8:06 The chip is called 4790k, not 4970k.
Where did you get an 8GB video card in it? All I see are the standard 2GB and upgraded 4GB video card configurations in it on the Apple website.
tipoomaster a couple cards. You can put a couple cards. One will be making left 2,5k second will be making right half of screen. Anyway 5k monitor controller is working through 2 wasy
vasiliy dubs What? There's only one GPU in it, and none of the options are 8GB.
I was asking myself the same thing...
Tats Zindi You'd still only have 2GB graphics memory, yeah, it has to mirror the contents of each memory pool directly.
Though since we're talking about an iMac, this discussion makes no sense anyways, single soldered in card.
Daniil Pintjuk You can't...it's an iMac. You can't replace the graphics card from what's built in, let alone SLI it.
You can now run 5k native in Winbdows 10/11. Fantastic machine and can be had for cheap now
Putting Microsoft windows on an iMac is like to mount a Ford engine on a Rolls Roice!...
nice bait vut try harder
more like putting a rolls royce steering wheel on your hyundai
Sir you gave too much credit to Microsoft, the correct is putting Windows on a Mac is like putting a lawnmower motor in a BMW.
More like pissing on top of your shit. Linux for the win!!!!

lemme tell ya a joke: "gaming macs"
ua-cam.com/video/zqTwOoElxBA/v-deo.html
why wouldn't you be able to game with a 980M? people think that the mobile version of the GPUs are crap, I mean they're expensive and not as powerful as the desktop version but a 980M is still very powerful
(its not easy to choose)
This is what I'm using now, just to give a clue...
Samsung laptop with i7 processor and Nvidea graphics
iMac 5k with 32gb of ram and 1TB ssd
ipad pro for testing my apps
iphone 5 and 6 also for testing
Samsung galaxy 5s mini for testing android
Assus android tablet
Cintiq 23HD touch (for design and illustration)
Canon 7D
Phantom 3 pro with 4k camera
2 HDD external drives for backup
1 480gb external SSD also for backup
Arduino and raspbery pie processors and a bunch of parts for electronic/robotic experiments and projects
Rode NT-USB for voice hovers on my videos
Beats Solo 2 (Silver special edition) that I use to listen to music while working and o edit the sound on some of the videos
Brother laser printer (2135 series)
Canon A3 printer (color)
and a bunch of cables, docks, stands (for the beats, phones, and other stuff), a cheap gaming controler cause I'm programming a few games also (just starting), some usb hubs (have 2 but only using one at the moment)
So... can you make some videos aimed to designers and developers?
Thank you in advance

Man, I don't know what Microsoft was thinking with Windows 8!! Windows 10 is so much much better!!!!
+4NewHop3 There has been a ton of updates and surface pro 3 same model runs like a dream now on windows 10
+SpaceKitty Well, that is nice to know. I don't own the Surface Pro 3 anymore though. I gave it to my parents.
$1500 Mac - thin
$500 Windows pc- acctually does things

Mac are pc....
That is why "Windows PC" was said. Unless that was the edit that they did.
they edited
A $500 PC is kinda underpowered. You're probably not gonna have an SSD in that.
Turtle Cake You can get a SSD in a $500 computer very easily. If you are not going to be having dedicated graphics.
DID anyone else see the troll face at 0:10? xD
PLAY ON THE 5K DISPLAY WITH EXTERNAL GRAPHICS BY RAZER!!
+Zee-Rex It'll be 4k though.
The video is not about running Windows on a Mac says.... Spends 7 out of 9 minutes talking about that...
watching videos this old is amazing !
I noticed something in how OS X behave when Intel is around...
Why does it rack up like a cat that just saw a red dot? i might be clueless but i noticed this too when i hackintoshed my Acer E5 and fired up DiRT 2...the fan was shooting hot air !
***** We both know that no Hackintosh can rival an actual OS X machine by Apple...
***** The Core i5 model....the one you have is the Core i7
The iMac 5k has dual r9 Radeon 290x so I guess it can run games, right?

Lmao I wonder how much it thermal throttles.
No... The 290X is a full sized card, not even 2 let alone 1 would fit inside it. They use the "M" Mobile R9 Cards. M290X, M295X and the M390X

The 1st person Linus slept with was called Billy.
"Actually 8GB."
Subtle.
5K display and you can't even run most games in 4K. What a joke!
1080p games would look ugly on that screen due to all the pixels being stretched. Even worse if you have to lower it to 720p.
Mm.
You're an asshat. Not even a GTX 980 can run everything at 4K. And he shown himself playing Crysis 3 at 1440p you idiot. That's pretty good. Better than your 1080p monitor fool
Why would you buy a mac for gaming??? it´s for business use...
YOU AGAIN!?
Didn't I see you on a particular gaming channel before...
***** You're missing the point. For how much you spend on the imac, you could spend on components which could play at 4k no problem.

It's a reference to the 970 3.5 gig thing.
Yep...God..nVidia is getting punished for this..but they deserve it.
Mac OS does seem to get more out of its hardware than Windows does. Its just better optimised IMO.
>better optimized
>thermal throttling up the ass
ok
NDogg15
> "If you can't deal with the fact that not everyone likes Macs even after using them extensively, you're a fanboy and a child."
> Can't deal with someone who doesn't like Windows, and is behaving like a windows fanboy and a child.
+Jorgen Wu what the fuck program did you use lol, obviously it was NOT premier pro. Or you just used it on a shitty pc.
Mayban36 | TASÓ no, i'm certain it was premier pro. dude, the license in the program even said, same with the install disks and programs list.
well, it does have an i3 core, sooooo....
***** truth. and usually a GPU that bottlenecks/freezes at the worst possible moments lol
Adobe requires CUDA cores for best squeeze of its potentiality. NVIDIA cores are best optimized for Adobe usage. any editing software require CUDA cores for best performance. use titan x you can justify your both gaming need and editing
4000 dollars to run crisis on medium? Kek nice apple
I tried overclocking my mac but it exploded
A mate of mine was given one of these iMacs as a review sample and sent it back due to the graphics chipset being woefully underpowered and he doesn't game. Its first generation technology so its worth the space on your desk if you do Illustrator or Photoshop or edit photography all day.
GUYS U WANNA HEAR A FUNNY JOKE?!?!?................APPLE! AHAHHAHAAHAHA
Don wijesinghe why is Apple a company then
JackPlaysOfficial be us there working as comedians
You do realize that Apple is one of the biggest technology companies in the world, right?
+Zachary Peterson don't think he does
Now sure why it's a question as to whether or not you can 'game' on a Mac. These things are infinitely more capable than most other laptops and towers (and especially other all-in-ones) that you can find at the store today. It seems to me that someone would ACTUALLY credit a $350 Acer 1/3 desktop over a 5K iMac for gaming, given their general bias.
***** You do get something better. A $350 computer is a piece of trash.
***** Not always true... and what type of value are you referring to? Specs? Those aren't all that make up a good computer.
Oh, I don't know around $1000 then going with a shit Mac.
how dare you refer to dota 2 as a casual game
well its not graphically demanding and not many normal people talk about dota do they?
CSGO is also a casual game. Filthy plebs, cod is the best.
lol kid
+Spooky spooky you fucking casul cod is a peasent game don't even pretend to step up to us PC master lords we are of a different race my friend... the master race
just a pinecone Oh, right. I forgot cod isn't on pc. Also, i'm replying to you on a potato, not a pc.
+deWaardt Maybe try to upgrade your god damn java version ?
deWaardt explain how, you can't ? How can't you update god damn java ?
+FormaxLt Do some research, this Powermac runs the PowerPC architecture and not the Intel. Newer versions of Java are for Intel/AMD architecture only, not for PowerPC
+deWaardt I actually laughed out loud when I read this. Lol.
+deWaardt me too :D
Ugly keyboard
Is it an AVID keyboard?
as expected, not good for gaming. Surely a cpu running at 100degrees cant be good for the longevity of it. I'd love to know what operating temps the gpu got to as well.
I must mention this as it somewhat relates
A guy at work was arguing with me the other day telling me that most hardcore computer gamers use macs and i laughed in his face and directed him to many benchmarks and statistics (I'll probably show him this too) but he stuck to his 'facts' lol.
CRBASF2
Wrong.
CRBASF2
just on windows you can't game at 5k YET.
Quad core
I'm not sure, maybe they didn't buy the best, although they were Hps, toshibas and lenovo and seemed good on paper.
͡ ͡° ͜ ʖ ͡ ͡°) Mac still sucks, i bet it cant run crisis 3 on Super High quality
+Jade Hokage ooh someone's triggered
*cough* apple fan boy *cough*cough*
+Jade Hokage mine can
+Jade Hokage and mine was cheaper than a Mac
+Jade Hokage compared to a custom built PC I'm afraid it can. Crisis can run on the highest settings at a solid 60fps. especially on the gtx 980. And I quote that a custom built PC is cheaper than buying the imacs/mac products in general. You can buy 5k monitors as well
+Dylan Coulbeck 5K monitors cost the same price as a iMac by itself so move along kid.
