- In 2013 in Sanford, Florida, vigilante George Zimmerman was found not guilty of the murder of 17-year-old African American Trayvon Martin. As a result, the struggle against police violence flared up under the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter and turned into one of the biggest grassroots movements in the United States. VPRO Backlight talked to co-founder Patrisse Cullors about the various forms of violence against black citizens, and why resistance is essential.

It’s not “only black lives matter” it’s “black lives matter too” noticed how I said TOO. As in black peoples lives are not expendable and they have have dignity, worth, and value as people created in God’s image and are worthy of love and respect. Saying All lives matter is a dismissive ad hoc response to ignore the damnable sin of how this country treated its Black citizens.
thank you so much
OMG THANK U I'm so tired of the ignorant uneduacted people in comments every time I search up #BlackLivesMatter
Exactly, literally all lives matter. THANK YOU!
I tried saying this to someone earlier and they still got nasty with me. I gave up with them in the end.
No, all lives matter.
You can't choose your sex and race upon your birth. Those are given to you. Behavior is what needs to be judged, not the look
I love this video and more people need to watch this to be educated on how this is such an important issue in the world.
So reverse racism is good???
@@Ben-gn5ow no one said that doofus
Anyone know of any more documentaries like this? Any documentaries about police corruption/brutality? Thanks!
Issue in the world?
Let me ask you then, do you ever think about the police brutality that exists outside your reality?
Break it down, predominantly African countries have serious issues with police brutality, but the difference is it’s black people hurting black people, why is that?
Simply because of the hierarchy put in place by ‘us,’ people. As soon as you hand a certain power to someone, almost guaranteed that somewhere down the line, someone will abuse it and someone gets hurt, America is lucky because of the education system it’s had to prevent much higher numbers in misuse of power due to uneducated people. Now take somewhere like Kenya where I grew up. Different but the same, less educated people in positions of power, ie; a lot of the police force.
Use unauthorised force at wish and injure or kill people and get away with it anyway. It has nothing to do with skin colour, most people here are preaching that you see past the skin but all you’re doing is moaning about different skin types attacking other skin types!
It’s so boring and mundane.
it has everything to do with humanity and mankind as a whole, we all have similar traits and aspects whether you like to believe it or not, you blame white police because the police force is predominantly white people. If it had more black police, this would still happen...
people will always be flawed it’s how you decide to perceive the reality that unfolds.
All laws matter
Where is the outrage for the African children hacked to death by rival gangs in Uganda and other African countries?
So proud to be mixed❤️ no shame! everyone should appreciate us just as much as any other race. ✌🏼
DJosephWells exactly. Too bad the world didn’t see it this way...
After a nice trip to a lake in New Hampshire with my girl friend I returned home and pulled into her parents driveway. Moments late a police car shone its spotlight on us . As I stepped out of the car the police asked if I lived there. I said no, my fiancee does. I reach into the car to pull out the plastic bag that held a crawfish . Next thing I knew I was hit and press against the hood of the car by one of the police ,me holding on to his night stick as he tried to press it towards my throat. Was I enraged you bet.
Disgusting. I hope you're doing better now :// all love from me❤️
This documentary wants to make me cry so badly, I feel so sorry for all of them
WE WANT SOCIALISM AND EQUALITY......"behind the scenes, oh fuck there are too many people to support, ummmmm lets just keep feeding them lies about SOCIALISM!!!!!"
We are onto you, and far more adapted to your schemes.....
Is there a recording of the performance they are practicing somewhere? I'd love to hear the entirety of their stories... but do not live in Seattle.
And burning down buildings and looting and beating people up is not violence???
I always am harassed by the police and have no police record. Mistaken identity was the cause they thought I was my brother and the cops jumped me due to that. Now is that right??? Getting beat by the police because they think I'm someone else? Is it right? We're were my rights? I'm affraid of police ive been accused of stealing from the stores
Though my heart is angry and grieving from the deep injustice that exists, my heart is encouraged by the goodness in people, too. And I am very thankful this documentary exists and gives me a chance to learn, grow, and assist in whatever way is best.
so much emotional appeal in contrast of no factual evidence which is in no way addressing the cause of the issue
Your indifference to the emotions IS the 'issue'.
It was pointed out several times that this is terrorizing.
What facts do you need to understand that people in this great nation feel like being under siege?
Which part of that issue was unclear?
Love and Respect to everyone around the world. Let there be peace and harmony 💖💖💖
Not enough advertisements in this video. Is there an ad on for youtube to get more ads?
Mike X what
this is so heartbreaking
20 things I noticed about this is all these people giving me stories all starting with themselves committing a crime but they don't tell you what crime they did. But say it's all some one else fault that they committed 😔 crime. I have black family and friends non of them have ever committed crime or have any stories like this. Here is a new idea don't commit crime's.
in this video it is about double standarts and that POC are suspected by the police more often and if they did a lil or even nothing wrong (like in the video footage), they are treated in extreme ways.. I think its important not to blame the victim in poplice violence szenarios! protecting some property can´t justify violence against humans.

Dinesh D'Souza, "No Republican owned any of the 4 million slaves prior to the Civil War." No one! They were ALL owned by DEMOCRATS." Think about it. That FACT has not been written in ANY history book being used in colleges today.
TRUTH
However, you must consider the change in the roles of political parties that has occurred since the Civil War. The positions of the Republicans and the Democrats have flipped in many aspects. Neither party has ever truly been completely right. Also, it wasn't until about the 1980s that parties became consolidated into the Republicans being conservative and the Democrats being Liberal. It used to be that you could be a Liberal Republican and a Conservative Democrat. Blaming either part for a period of faults is a dangerous mistake that only serves to widen the gap and increase the polarization between the parties. This makes our government less effective and representative of the people, as well as making the populace more divided. Colleges do not teach that no Republicans owned any slaves prior to the Civil War for several reasons, including trying to see the nation as an organization of people rather than just parties and, you know, the fact that they have yet to see any actual factual sources that prove your assertion is correct. If you really are a true patriot who wants this country to thrive and succeed, you would rethink your adversarial view of the political parties and focus more on the importance of making sure the government remains representative of the people and does not infringe upon their rights. Also, if you really want to fight with quotations, read this one from George Washington,
“However [political parties] may now and then answer popular ends, they are likely in the course of time and things, to become potent engines, by which cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men will be enabled to subvert the power of the people and to usurp for themselves the reins of government, destroying afterwards the very engines which have lifted them to unjust dominion."
In conclusion, kindly take your argument of blaming one party over another and fuck off. You aren't educating or helping anyone, especially not United States.
@@kaithall1759 The only voters that "flipped " were the southern Democrats that woke up to how bad the expansion of government control , wasteful spending and taxation had become. The same reason why most Democrats "flip " .
painful to watch
Probably the answer to 26:29 is a way to solve other issues mentioned earlier. Even with all those resources we found vandals and criminals looting and destroying “the community” In a moment of national emergency for COVID pandemia. If they would “matters “ for lives they wouldn’t mobilized and risk thousand of followers to violence, caos , anarchy and risk to get sick and die.
This video has been up for 3 years. I’m seeing comments that happened just a couple days ago. I am one of these people. We want to understand black culture? Then we need to get with the times. I’m ashamed to know that this video has been up for so long and I’m only watching it now. But this is start to understanding black culture. Let’s keep going and let’s be mindful of black culture and what we can learn to make a safer environment for all black lives.
No life fully matters until all lives matter which means black lives must matter ❤
Could someone tell me, what is the meaning of the phrase BLACK LIVES MATTER in Spanish? I know that it is an organization in defense of the rights of blacks people against police abuses, but I am unable to translate the phrase.
A documentary about Black Lives Matter acting class.
White and black both racist. Better to forget the matter and be friendly to each other.
If it was that easy
I am not racist just like I don't think all white people are racist. In every culture or groups of people you have those who are ignorant of the cultures and experiences of others. Essentially, the essence of racism is ignorance.
@dailyday . well said . I have met all kinds of racists , in my experience , Many African Americans , Hispanics and Asians.
God bless you all, I love you keep your heads up, we in this together ❤️
What’s the point of shutting down highways??

Love it!BTW did you tell Hutu Power that in 1994?I won a bet (One hundred trillion Zimbabwean dollars)that in five years after "Independence" from Sudan civil war would erupt and 100 000 would be slaughtered. It took 11 months!!!!!!I think the BLM campaigners ought to got to South Sudan and speak a lil bit to Riak Machar and Salva Kiir.
Another tragedy has struck our community.Balin Brakes who was not born blind lost his right eyeball after getting hit by a tear gas canister...Sad.
I havent watched this, but recent events have made me search and i just want to say ALL LIVES MATTER
Also, if black lives matter so much then why dont more Africans from the west do more to help the struggling people out in Africa and other such countries. All these multimillionaire African-Americans and the like. Just saying
Can I show this publicly? I want to show it in my community and then have a conversation about it. This will be an "open to the public event" no charges for viewing.
Hello Nick Zeimet,
You can send an email to international@vpro.nl in order to ask about that.
Best regards
Thank you, email sent...still waiting on reply:). Is there a quicker way to get a response? Thanks again!
This is not a very good documentary in my opinion. It basically felt like a commentary by an individual. I expected interviews with many individuals and a deeper explanation of how the movement started from different events and how that built up and congealed and perhaps a bit of a timeline type presentation (not literally but from a historical perspective). This was just an advertisement for miss Cullors and an excuse for her to preach about her particular passion. I get that was the goal but the description and title didn't do enough to make that clear.
Well said. I am working on an article about this right now for my Medium account. My author name is G.S. Muse
Where are they now? It's like someone stopped funding them 🤔
Still saying this now?
Why couldn't they name this organisation "black lives also matter"? If their goal is to bring changes then they should reach as many people as possible. That name would have bigger impact to non black community i feel.
Mexican people obviously handle their anger differently!!!!🤣
I find almost all your documentaries really interesting, but rather you guys spend your energy/talent on a subject that brings humans together. I'm worn out on identity politics.
I would feel closer to the wider public if the wider public knew Black lives mattered. It is emotionally draining...living with black skin in America can be draining...even a routine traffic stop become a war over identity politics.
How are there even dislikes? People, please open your eyes
If only blacks would stay to the business of success and give back to life that is freely given to them along the way.
Jesus and Martin Luther King jr. Say that all lives matter. If you want a base your life on God, Jesus and the Bible you need to take up your cross and follow Him. Jesus is the only savior that forgives sins and offers eternal life. Feel remorse over the evil things that you have done in your life and ask God to forgive you through Jesus Christ. As Christians we are not to devote Our Lives to spiritual agendas other than the good news of Jesus. Black lives matter is another gospel and will be condemned by Jesus when He judges. I hope to win you over to Jesus because nothing else matters in the end. God bless you all.
Yes I do see human but I don't see humanity.

i applaud this film for addressing the problems and wanting to take some action to better all our lives. To have a conversation to change the substandard conditions that still exist. When we all come together it is a richer more loving place to be. I am so sick of seeing black men get killed for no reason and the way blacks, mexicans, anyone who isnt white, get treated like second class citizens and worse. This is such a horrible way to treat human beings. It is traumatic for those of us who value ALL lives. Please people just STOP THE MADNESS. We are just asking for decency at the very least.

Anger. Rage. My story. Appeals to theatrical emotion is an attempt to stir emotion over facts.
I disagree with your approach. You don't have a right steal the microphone from Bernie Sanders. He has spent a lifetime building his career. You haven't earned that position. It speaks volumes about your mindset that you think this acceptable. All people want community to work - helping to make that happen seems the only way to make this work over long haul.
Why are other races not having this issue? Irish were enslaved once, Japanese were the most hated, vilified race in the US - 50 years ago they were thrown in internment camps - now both are respected members of community.
Patterns are seen by cops just like bouncers in nightclubs. Doesn't make them racist per se. Militancy is not going to help integration. Meditation classes would be better than shouting at people about racism and "the Patriarchy", which creates a chip on their shoulder before they even start. It helps kids delay gratification and stick at things, calmly.
lol white folks what a fuckin racist as video against white people black people still trying to get more shit for free get a job
+Church boy now who is racist?
Clearly you were affected in some way by what you saw so I appreciate your comments because I take it as your way of entering the conversation. With that being said please allow me to challenge your perspective with the following scenario: answer truthfully, what if an illness, the should've been eradicated long ago, was now claiming a life every 28 hours in America and you found out about it not by means of any government media outlet, but by a few people on social media, would you believe it? What if instead of a few people on social media there were a hundred, would you believe it then? How about a thousand? Here's another question, what if you found out that the illness was never fully eradicated instead its existence and the lives it's claimed were covered up and millions are now dead because of it, would you be angry? Unfortunately such an illness does exist and it is an epidemic that most don't believe is real. Now the only question that remains is how far are you willing to go to learn the truth? If you truly want to know UA-cam "Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome" by Dr Joy DeGruy. Then check out the videos by Dr Robin DiAngelo.
Then PLM, Purple Lives Matter2....👾🗯🔫👾👾👾👾🗯🔫👾
How come I know nothing
I thought this was a great documentary, and I felt a lot of respect for the women who narrated (I am sorry I do not know her name). There was only one thing in the documentary that really bothered me, I am a white Canadian female, and that was the shout out in Seattle. To me, it felt like a slam to all white people, why the racist slurs to all white? Not all whites are racists, many of us march with you for your cause, especially here in Toronto. Perhaps someone can explain. As a white female I have been a victim of police brutality, so I can understand your anger and it is the most degrading thing a person can experience. I often see black people being abused in the way you are speaking of, even down to the point where they are constantly being monitored in retail stores. I cannot imagine how you must feel on a daily basis, but I am sure if I had to go through it I would feel a growing rage inside of me. I can only apologize for your circumstances and let you know that when I do see these abuses I am unbelievably outspoken about them. Your documentary was e xtremely insightful, and other than my one point I think you hit things right on the nose. They are lucky to have you as a spokesperson, you show empathy, calmness, logic and are very bright and insightful. I admire what you are doing for your people. Thank-you.
Because they low key rascist against whites. This motion is trash. Modern day racial divide. Blacks aint the only ones who get discriminated. They just the only ones acting like its ok to be racist towards whites.
