    Brilliant solution
    Other benefits of a GPS spedo is no worries about changing spedo gear for different rear end ratios and since my radio has GPS built in I can set an over speed warning in case I go too fast.
    My GPS antenna is on the dash and works fine, I don't think ice or snow will stop the GPS signal but metal will.

    You only need the speedometer when you go through the several stop signs! Lol

    I wouldn't worry about the poor fitment in the dash Mike, using LR standards for panel gaps, that passes the quality control!

    The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a constellation of orbiting satellites operated by the US military. It used to be US Air Force, now I think it is US Space Force. The concept is the satellite knows its name and tells very precise time, and sends some additional blips. Each satellite broadcasts a low powered FM radio signal, and the receiver compares the other data and the time signals its antenna can receive. The more sky the antenna can see, the better the geometry the device can calculate. Therefore, mounting the antenna on a vertical surface like the glass, is asking for errors because the only satellites it can see are those in the 180-deg arc in front and above. Mount the antenna as high as you can with as much sky view as possible - despite the written instructions!

    Indicator lights is useful, in my ex military you can’t hear the ticker due to the thick metal fuse box…

    Looks a nice unit, ideal of course if you have strange diff ratios or tyre sizes.

    I would fit the GPS receiver underside of the top of the plastic instrument binnacle

    Strange. All these years I've been listening to you babble on and never before heard your trains. Spent a night in a US motel once and there was a track literally the other side of the rear wall. So funny when a train trundled past and things started to move off the table and fall on the floor. Straight out of "My Cousin Vinny".

    I put larger diameter tyres on my Defender, and tried a smart phone app for a speedo - GPS, being in the states for mph. The OEM speedo is in Kph, works good for now. I really do like your idea Mike!

      @@BritannicaRestorations The biggest pain was trying to get a pulse from the speedo sensor. After a lot of head scratching it turned out that the brand new VDO speed sensor was non functional! So annoying.

    • @BritannicaRestorations
      @BritannicaRestorations  Рік тому +1

      How to Set Odometer ?
      - Press the back button for 2-3 seconds first and then turn on the power supply.
      - Release the button after seeing “ODO”; Press the button to set up the target odometer value.
      - After adjustment, release button first, then wait for menu to complete flashing.
      - Turn off the power supply, then turn on again. Odometer will record the setting.

      @@BritannicaRestorations I was wondering about ODO tampering. I'm still a little surprised GPS is legal for speed. Tunnels and pârking don't count??

    • @BritannicaRestorations
      @BritannicaRestorations  Рік тому

      It self-corrects if it goes through a tunnel, but let's face it - if you go through tunnels every single day then this is not for you as you have no GPS and could be caught speeding
      As for accuracy, when I pass the 50 km/hr warning displays that are common here - this unit is spot on

      @@BritannicaRestorations I've used a GPS when my speedo metal cable broke - it's definitely more accurate.
      My watch GPS will keep working inside as far as distance goes using IMU I believe.
