I love the heat shrink - especially the shrink butt connectors.
I got the most basic gps speedometer for my old Jaguar Sovereign XJ40 when the instrument cluster died. It was only a green digital display, but it worked amazing! Then I was lucky enough to locate and buy a good working instrument cluster.
The high beam indicator is probably brighter than the actual high beams 😂
Will be driving like the Blues Brothers at night!
A very simple and cheap way of avoiding calibration problems from changing tyre diameters or diff ratios.
Pretty accurate too - spot on 50km/hr when going through the automated speed warnings
I had to fit something similar to an old Ford Ranger, as the instrument packs on those are a) fragile, and b) made of unobtanium. This was by far and away the easiest and cheapest way to sort my customer out - beyond that, he was scuppered with that vehicle, as there was no way he would get a repair. It was brilliant, right out the box, and kept that truck going for another couple of years. I think a lot of these are intended for motorbikes, hence the indicator and high-beam integrated in the instrument.
Lots of variations of a theme for these - boats, bikes etc
Excellent upgrade! Putting that on me wish list 👍
Good choice!
very nice bit of kit, may get one for mine if i ever get it finished, not doing a posh job on it but putting stuff right where experts messed up lol, love your vid's and so do a couple of my grandkids as you make learning fun, keep up y
the good work.
Right on!
very interesting. That's a nice upgrade. I've seen the VDO versions and they are nice but very spendy. This is a nice alternative if you need a new speedo. It is hotter up there than it is here on the gulf coast! Just had a thunderstorm and the temp dropped 15° F
Right on
Looks great Mike .....I would have been tempted to put the rhd cowel on though ....
Next time!
Looks awesome 😎 next on my to do list - already scratching my head on wiring up indicator light on main dash and flashing for the right and left on the speedo unit
Much rather this than that blooming clip holding speedo cable in the box again !
…. These vids are great but make me keep adding to my wanted list !!!
You can do it!
200kmph is possible in a Defender, it will occur just before you hit the bottom of the Grand Canyon.
I was thinking about the tow truck.
Land Rover = keeping and growing the towing business's since the late 80's in Canada!
My friend has on in his classic Mini works fin in fact they are ideal for classic cars as with worn parts they speedo tends to bob up and down quite a bit I have my sat nave plugged in most of the time and that gives me a digital readout of what speed I am going need to have my specs on to see it though.
I’m in England. You said you had a better way of mounting. Would you mind letting me know. Thanks
Making a better plastic ring - but now it is fitted I would have to remove it to get the dimensions!
Great product but surely the lighting should have white and green options so as to match the Defender's lighting? Also a clip-on black rim would be a good option for it to come with, again to ensure a decent match. I like the fact that you can set the mileage to match the old speedo.

Looks like a great option Mike, is there a delay on startup whilst it acquires the satallite signal?
Nope about 2 or 3 seconds
Replacing the speedo on my ‘97 110- did you ever update the mounting ring? Are you still happy with the speedo?
No, I have not followed this up due to lack of interest!
Still works - only downside is it takes a while to connect from start up - maybe it is my area and all the trees?
Nice bit of kit! Never mind tunnels, I wonder what happens when they downtune the GPS, which they do around here once a year during the annual big NATO exercises! 🤣
No idea
I take it they don’t work in tunnels etc Mike? Or maybe just maintain the last ‘known’ reading?
Yes and then they calculate the distance from no signal to new signal
Got it. So they’re actually a bit more sophisticated than you would assume. Great bit of kit. Especially for modified vehicles with ratio/wheel size changes.
Exactly!
Jobs a good un. 👍
Do you have a link Mike to where you bought it from

Find us a td5 defender rev counter cheap lol..
hi, does the gauge display the current mileage of the car (after you’ve set it) ?
You program the speedo to the old mileage - I wrote the original on the back
Do you have confidence in accuracy? (I feel hypocritical even asking that question given the +-20kph bounce on my Defender.)
We have a lot of digital speed warnings here and 50 km/hr is spot on, so for me good enough
Dash cam is 7 km/hr out @50km/hr
How do you replace the other guages with a radio wave...
You do not need VDO gauges but Voodoo gauges
@@BritannicaRestorations first I've heard this. My last VooDoo gauge was made in Oz. T , fuel level, gear position, before CAN
Is it legal to have one in the UK Mike? Wasn't there some Rule in the MOT years ago that the speedo has to be working. How would they know on the rolling road.
Or have I just made all this up and it's all b*ll*cks. It wouldn't be the first time.
No you're right, it has to be seen as working. They don't work in tunnels or over some types of steel bridges either. There's no accommodation for GPS speedo's in the MOT handbook so strictly speaking they're a Major Fail on the UK test
We do not have MoT / inspection here.
The only time a vehicles mileage is recorded is when it changes ownership and then if you are not sure, then you can state speedo broken
One of these ought to get a car through an MoT. Regulations-wise, the backlighting must work, and that's about it. However, if you want a plausible odometer reading from test-to-test, then you need a working speedo. The only time an MoT tester would know if the speedo worked, or not, on a test, would be if he took the vehicle out for a Tapley Test on the brakes, and at that point this speedo would be fine. Some "normal" speedos will not work on rolling-roads either, as they are not driven by the ABS-controller output until the average wheel-speed is above a minimum threshold speed, always well above what these rollers are run at for brake-testing. So the biggest challenge would be to carry the original odometer reading over onto the new GPS unit, which it sounds like Mike has found in the instructions.
@@stuartbell7078 That is what I like about this channel. Proper blokes in the comments.
Thanks Stuart.
I think I am right in understanding the Discovery 2 as no speedo drive but averages out the 4 x ABS wheel sensors to operate the speedo - this would be interesting to see on a regular rolling road!
(Knowing my luck, it would probably put the 3 amigos lights on...)
Looks a good unit Mike. Presume the original one went breasts up? Ignore - just found part 1
looks great found some on thingy bay, mph version less than 50 squids uk haggling currency, @bigal5932 they are available with rev counters on the same clock also, so you can remember speeds in gears by revs to have peace of mind approaching tunnels.
Self adjusts mileage after exiting tunnels or bridges - but to be honest, how many tunnels do you do through a day?
My nearest tunnel is Montreal or Toronto 160/ 700 km away
@@BritannicaRestorations between cardiff and newport m4 use it about once every two years on average, not so much now. however we are now getting 20 mph zones in towns and villages so nice to have the options.
