Did you check the oil level in the hub during your pre trip? The fact that there are no leak s doesn't mean everything is ok. ALWAYS CHECK THE OIL LEVEL IN THE HUB ASSEMBLY. I personally remove the rubber caps and put my finger inside if I cannot see the level with my eyes through the little window, unless its a sealed lubricated hub assembly that I cannot get into which is very common.
Did you check all the slack adjusters for adjustment after? That bearing looked like it was dry for a while with all that rust. Probably why it wasn't leaking... no oil. IDK bro, but the site glass isn't always that easy to see through. How do you add oil with those auto air monitors attached to the hub anyway?
with the cap looking newer someone repaired this wheel recently but failed in doing so then it cascaded and seeing those Stemco hub bolts the way they were tells me that it was not done properly as there was no Gasket between the hub and the Cap.

Road calls are about double the price of bringing it to a shop and in my area, a spindle replacement is $2500, not including parts and labor for new hub, bearing and brakes

Hey Rusty!!! The trailer!?!??!!??? Good grief 🤦♀️ If it ain’t one thing, it’s another!!! I’m glad that you paid attention and stopped before something more serious happened!!!! They were flashing lights, waving as they passed him, and even got in front of him and were pointing out of their window, trying to alert him of the problem.
