Yep…These commercialized truck stops like pilot, flying j, ta, and petro, have lost sight of their respective founder’s mission. It’s no longer about providing the quality service to the professional drivers, rather it’s about how much more money can we squeeze from the truck driver, while providing less amenities. It’s exactly the reason I turned our fleet into daycabs. The drivers are better rested, eat healthier meals, and don’t have to worry about the graft of parking fees, and trying to find a parking spot. The trailers are dropped at decon yards, and the driver parks at the Hampton. Usually, there’s a quality restaurant close by the hotel.
It died with the country. Everything that can be paid for, will be paid for. This is the multicultural, broken, individualistic, materialist society people wanted.
Hell, in high school I pumped gas at a full service station, washed windows, checked the oil, and rarely got tips. Now they expect tips to run the register……
Yep, me too and we really didn't expect tips we were just proud to do the job and to have the job. Tips were nice but was not expected at all.
Same! Truck stop on 81 in Virginia. They only let us HS guys/gals inside work if we kept our grades up. If we didn't? they cut our hours back so we could study more. A family owned and ran for many years with a lot of regulars everyday. They were like mom and dad and treated us like family. Nicest people in the world man. But the world was a different almost 45 years ago I guess. Drivers were all different, some were amazing, always gave us a little something, always said hi if you weren't on their island, always tipped. Some were assholes but I figure, they just had a lot on their mind. Family problems man, jesus, some guys never stopped whining, some never stopped talking bout how exciting their life was as a driver. And back then? You could compete, talk shit about miles and runs, all paper logs and hauling ass. It was exciting for a country boy, it was like hanging out at the airport and watching people coming and going everywhere, every direction. I had a great time taking care of those guys like 30-45min pitstops. And we humped man, filling trucks, reefers, cleaning windows and mirrors, headlamps (all glass them days) Thinking about graduation, seeing the world as a lot small place from the driver stories gave me a Huck Finn kind of spirit. After school I walked up to 81 and put my thumb out~ never been back, headed north. I really feel those things I learned, people I met inspired me~shame they never knew that.
@@milesff7 So what, would you have turned down a tip?
I remember it happening a few times .A dollar tip was GOLD. Gas was 31 cents in 1969...............and I was earning a dollar an hour.
Steve, I just want to a big Thank You to you and the other truck drivers out there. You guys (and gals) do an important job, that most people don't appreciate. I work for a major office supply chain store where I handle receiving most of the deliveries. I always thank the drivers and tell them how much I appreciate them and respect what they have to deal with.
I remember when 50 gallons would get you free breakfast, drinks, and a shower. Today’s world is ridiculous!
The CEO needs a new helicopter
Just found your channel, for a guy that loves to travel and is stuck in the office all day it's a Godsend. Love the way you mix interior and exterior views and your commentary. I used to do a LOT of highway driving (car, not truck) but now hardly ever get to, so it's a real treat to have your vids running on one screen while I work on the other. Stay safe and keep 'em coming brother.
Glad your here. I run this truck basically everywhere. Happy you found us.
Truck looks awesome with new rims.
It's not only at truck stops, all Subways have a tip option at the registers. Most McDonalds and TacoBells require the customer to self order on a touch screen kiosk in the lobby now!
I get 20% off every McDonalds order by using the App.
I don’t know,, I have 2 McD’s close to me & you have the option of the kiosk & talking to a live person
You also have the option not to eat that crap!
Tbh, i prefer ordering on a touch screen because it means I don't have to interact with some idiot 😂
Sure as hell ain't leaving a tip though.
If you order your food standing up, do not tip.
@@jerryplante5783 I wouldn’t say that there’s a few restaurants in my area where you order standing up and then you go sit your ass down and wait for your food to be delivered to your table along with anything else you might need the waitress will bring you or waiter
@@crowntsp We usually leave a tip on the table for these places.
that's my rule now.
@@jerryplante5783 yeah we’ll leave it on the table sometimes, but I generally try to actually hand it to the person that way I know they get it
@@crowntsp while they might deliver it, they don't serve you, they didn't take your order, they don't come back to check on you, so it really isn't the same thing. Everyone wants a tip now, including for to-go orders, but they don't want to tip those who serve them, like trash collectors, mechanics, etc.
Tip culture is getting ridiculous
They tried to introduce that tip culture crap into Australian society and of course we nipped that crap at the bud pretty quickly .
Yes!! Efffffff that
@@addamr2052
Yeah, but isn’t the minimum wage there like 25 dollars per hour?
It is! But if they don’t accept tips they should be making more that 5 6 dollars a hr
@@Miner-49 current minimum wage for someone working 38 hours aweek in Australia is $24.10AUD an hour which is 16.26USD.
If you want to have some fun, order at the McD kiosk but select to pay in cash. You will be treated to a brain malfunction by the clerk. They can't figure out what to do.
Its shocking how many normal looking kids working the drive thru can't count well enough to make change. The schools are pure garbage.
Not sure why..? The standard procedure for 'cash' is you get a receipt you take to the register, they punch in a number, then hand the employee the cash.
@@Sara-Lyeah lol pretty simple and never have had problems doing it… not sure where this guy is going
@@markschlageter3976 where’s this at, bull💩
Love that camera view in the underside of the truck! Very cool to see the steering shaft, shift linkage, throttle linkage and that big ol Kitty Cat torquing up and unloading between shifts! Very cool! Please do that some more, I love seeing everything moving, wheels spinning, suspension working, Love It!!
Went my local pharmacy the other day. So, I did the shopping, put it in my cart, checked it out at the self-check-out, bagged it (in the bag that I brought from home, and then it asks, "How did we do today? Would you like to leave a tip?" Well, you didn't do jack sh*t and NO!! I'm not leaving a stupid machine a tip. The audacity of these companies today.
Tipping on the Card Reader; What most people dont know about tipping thru a card reader is the Management of a business MAY take a percentage of the (so-called) tip as a 'Service Charge" to its employee's(Its a scam) and its a reason why i NEVER use a card reader to tip with.
I asked a subway employee about the tips and told me that they would get it at the end of the month.
I don’t tip on my cards at all. I give cash to whoever. My wife used to be in food service and the owner kept all credit card tips. I always said he was a pos. He thought he was not doing anything wrong. So if we eat out I always bring cash. I scratched the tip line on the receipt and make sure that the receipt is just the total amount of the food. I make sure that I keep the receipt and check out my bank account for when it comes through. So the place doesn’t add anything to the bill. I tell friends why I do it and they started doing it too. I tip the amount I feel the server is worth. If the server doesn’t do anything worth the tip then I don’t tip them and let them know why. I will ask the manager to see the cook and if they come to the table I will give them the tip if the food was cooked in the way that I ordered it. Someone might not like the way I do it but if they don’t do their job. Why do I have to tip them.
No, it’s NOT a scam because the business always pays a service charge on any card transaction so they’re just giving the employee the actual net amount that they receive from the customer. They can’t pay the employee more than the business gets from the payment!
It’s typically around 3%-4% or so not all that much.
Im not tripping for ordering food at a counter
Clear sound from under the hood with no wind. Nice shot of mechanical engine doing it thing as you shift gears and press on the pedal.
Back in the 70s Iran the west. A friend of mine owned a three axel KW COE 335 and 4 and 4. That is the truck I learned to drive in. I have driven conventional and cab overs. 40FT flats /double vans and tankers and a lot of tractor trailer tankers too. Your Pete is very cool. Back then I ran west coast without a sleeper. Used the air lift seat and a tool box and the doghouse. Not exactly like todays motorhome like rigs.
Maybe you should have a tip jar out when you make a delivery...
I went to my local parts store for an oil filter, and they had a TIP jar on the counter. I asked them if they were serious ! NO, just NO !
@@cheftaz67 You make a lot more money than they do (or should) so help them out a little 😉
I remember back in the 1980`s going with my uncle. Every truck stop waitress knew my uncle like family from coast to coast.
They all knew what my dad and Godfather would order each time they would come in and eat.
Yeah well back in the 1980's we didn't have Politicians flooding our country with greedy illegal immigrants and raising prices.
The drivers were completely different back then too.
Probably had families from coast to coast. Truckers are the lowest form of life.
Great video Steve. Yeah that is just ridiculous! They can get mad all they want to, but I sure wouldn't tip. Now a small mom and pop store, sure I'll be glad to support them.
Yea! "Don't eat bean's and ride the bus...(Tip
Like. (So-called ". Our'. UAW's. Asking for a tip". While our. POS/CHINA BASED vehicle come from. Outsourced part's. To be judged by our own....
I could sleep better knowing the most half is from J' pan. More reliable...
We're seeing the MC D's employees asking for 15$hr. Their prices already gone up. Compensating... B.S. ...! Now, a tip Too! And. Isn't like a waffle house/huddle house.
Hey man! It's getting like Mad Max. Mel Gibson. Type. OTR. Isn't like that anymore. You're prey.
A tip at Subway is a big hell no. I live outside of Nashville and 2 foot long cold cut meals cost me 23.86 Thursday. The scanner asked me if I wanted to tip also. The employees make 12-14 dollars per hour there according to their hiring sign.
The subway here was shutdown by the cooperate office. Cause employees was stealing. They would make sandwiches for there friend's and family members. And let them fill up in fountain drinks without paying.
I dont do the tip deals. Everyone wants a tip and most for doing a crappy job.
I consider TIPs to be for extraordinary service. NOT for crappy service. AND the worker has to do something extra or extra well for me. Not just normal stuff. I don't tip fast food workers. AND IF I were in Kalifornia I would never tip fast food workers. The just got huge increases.
So I design commercial/industrial fueling centers, C-stores, and an occasional truck stop. A lot of times I have to redesign the truck stop because the architect has no concept of how a truck turns. There is no way he can get in or out of the dispenser area. So now there is this software called Auto-Turn which we all have to use now. We have to prove that an Interstate semi, axles all the way back, can turn out onto to a service road or street without EVER entering an oncoming lane. Most places it's freaking impossible to prove that a semi will never turn into an oncoming lane. I never see any government reviewers out watching the truckers to make sure y'all don't drive into oncoming lanes. The longer trailers are, the more space it takes to maneuver around the property, and land is very expensive. Most truck stops aren't big enough to move around in. And most states now restrict driveway widths to 45 feet, though I have seen some wider. Watching all those cones in that parking lot would drive me nuts if I saw a customer do that. Frankly, if I were you, I'd just drive over the damned cones, but maybe there is a professional reason why you don't. Do you ever get stopped for driving into oncoming traffic when coming out of a center? PS, I love your COE. I haven't seen one in Texas in a long time.
I adjusted my schedule so I would be out of hours about 3 to 4 pm in the afternoon when possible. I was so convenient because I would pull into the truck stop and usually have a pretty choice parking spot for the night. I would be fueled up and on the road at 2-3am and scales are closed and police are busy with drunks or wrecks.
Good channel. I learned to drive in a Pete cab over 30 years ago. Can’t drive anymore. Illness It brings back a lot of memories.
Love your channel.
Steve, tell us how you really feel..
The letters in the word tips means To Insure Prompt Service.. And I never tip unless I’m sitting in a restaurant with someone waiting on me.. If I’m standing I’m not tipping.. This coming from someone who used to work in the restaurant industry.. Tips (when I do tip) are cash, not on a card..
Safe travels!!!!
Agreed 💯
Have a safe trip to the Adirondacks. I spent many nights in Lake Placid when I was in college. I now live in the Lake George area.
I remember driving in the 80 and 90's, you fill at least 100 gallons, and you got a free steak dinner. That happened several times in west Texas and Eastern New Mexico. And diesel was o ly $98.9 usually. Spent over 25 years pulling mobile homes.
Yes that's how they used to do it you fuel the truck up 50 gallons or more they give you a ticket like a receipt for a shower it would usually expire in like a week I've been driving trucks 41 years
Chad Keegan talks about him getting 50 gallons at a time to bank showers for himself. Pretty sure you need to be a member to get them though.
Man you have the BEST sounding truck engine & shifting video of all the others. Thanks for all the hard work you put in to make the Videos & listening to ur buddy who told you to talk more to us, Great job.
Yes great cinematography(camera angles). Really nice of you giving that driver a shower. EVERY BUSINESS GIVES YOU
THE 3RD DEGREE JUST TO LOG IN AND BUY FROM THEM!!! EVERY STORE IS SECURITY AND PROFIT CRAZY!!!
That wiring in front of the left front wheel there looks like a nightmare when winter comes and ice is hanging from it. Just an experience I had on a trailer some years ago.
I remember some fuel stops would give you a voucher for a free meal at the restaurant when you fueled up heck now you can't even find a truckstop with actual restaurant
Back in the day most service plazas on the Pa and NY Thruway would give truckers a discount 😮
Bullshit. I have stopped at 3 just this week.
@@jeremyberry9422 I’m talking about back in the 70s and 80s
@carldrexler7883 my response wasn't directed at you. It was for the one that said you can't find a stop with a restaurant any more.
@@jeremyberry9422 I agree with you. I retired in 22 after 54 years of driving. Steve just doesn’t know where the good stops are. True alot has changed since Covid But there’s still plenty of truckstops and eateries around. Some times I think Steve expects a blow job when he goes into a truck stop. Considering the overhead these truckstops have and what they bring in AND the slobs that some of these drivers are I don’t think Steve takes that into consideration, but thanks for getting back to me. Take care 👍👌😊
We went to a walk up window to get some ice cream yesterday and they had a tip cup by the napkins dispenser ! Same thing !
I've pulled into truck stops that have areas marked for RVs and they are usually full of local bob-tailers and no place for RVs to park
RVs don't keep them in business, trucks do.
THAT'S WHY THEY MAKE R.V. PARK'S, CAMPGROUNDS,
WALMARTS OUR FOR R.V. OWNERS TO CHEAP TO PAY FOR PARKING
9 dollars for a shower doesnt sound bad. I service a Loves in Chatham NY and I asked them today how much showers are out of curiosity and for when I get my CDL..18 dollars without a rewards card. I was blown away lol. Now I gotta go to the Pilot 20miles away and check there.
not just subway asking for a tip, the self-checkouts a Walmart want a tip now too!
Yeah right ghey
No they ask you if you wanna round your total up to the next dollar
What Walmart is charging you for using self-checkout I think that's a lie
Thats a lie
regarding showers, before the loyalty/points cards we used to give a $ 5.00 dollar key/ towel deposit, even that being so a $5-9.00 dollar shower is still with in reason with buying $800 dollars of fuel
Regarding the McDonald's Kiosk. When you get to the payment screen. Just push on the cancel button on the credit card key pad. A menu will show on the screen and you can select pay at counter. 😀
In Canada, the McDonald's kiosk automatically ask when paying if you want to pay at the kiosk or at the counter.
@@ralphvelthuis2359sometimes it says you need to pay at the kiosk. Thats when you can cancel the card payment and get the receipt to pay at counter
Found your channel last week. Brings back memories. I retired eight years ago just about the time they started reserved parking. That was bull****. Obviously it’s gotten worse. You keep making them I’ll keep watching.
Dude, you keep that big rig super tight between the lines! Nicely done!
That was very nice of you to get a rewards card and give it to that other driver so he could take a shower. Not everyone would do that.
Old school drivers always looked out for each other if you was just going to fuel and run another driver needed a shower you just handed him the ticket if you helped jump start another guys truck or refer Thay ask how much I owe you just told them help the next guy out
I stopped going to McD's. For one fast food is terrible for you, for two their kiosks have a chronic problem registering my touch so I would go to to the counter. A few times they tried to redirect me to the kiosk and after that and between that the food is just really terrible for you, I stopped going.
Kiosks and self checkouts in grocery stores because corporations don't want to pay humans.
I havent watched for a while. Orwell is looking sharp with all the aluminum and chrome youve added.
Hi Steve: I been watching you videos and the truck stops you go to. So have making drawing of a truck with own design.
Things like NO reserve spots - Easy in and out. Driver only 24 hour dining room. It should designed with you guys in mind. You and other drivers move America. Keep up the great work with Orwell 😊
Boom!😎
Thank you!
Today in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, a driver was loading a Genie onto a trailer using a full width ramp. Unfortunately, from the photos, it looks like it fell off the ramp and the driver was killed. The company involved rents out equipment to the TV/movie industry. Just goes to show how what are everyday jobs can change a person's day in a heartbeat.
STAY ALERT, STAY OBSERVANT, STAY SAFE!
We had this message on the exterior of all our trucks - "NO JOB HAS PRIORITY OVER SAFETY "
I love seeing the exhaust come out the pipes looking forward from the trailer and the sound of going through the gears.
Glad i have gone local/regional now and home every day still putting on 675 miles 5 days a week on a dedicated route.. dedicated fuel stop and not having to worry a bunch of other issues.
Everyone wants a tip for doing very little. By the way, I watched your video and clicked the "like" button, if you don't mind, can you take a look at this screen and select how much tip you want to give me? LOL!!!
Keep the shiny side up and the greasy side down.
Orange safety barrels, those are the new official state flower here in Virginia.
Election years ..they'll all go away next year
Steve just keep the HAMMA DOWN pay no attention to the NIT WITS out there and their comments ORWELL is looking good love the inside cab video the most it's like we're sitting right behind ya all the video is great keep em coming Brother
Good thing Subway didn’t charge you a service charge using your credit card like some places do!
All those cones, make great corner protectors for strapping loads. a good pair of scissors cuts them into pieces and they have that natural curve to stay on the corner... just in case anybody wants to know... I can see it now, truck stops, missing lots of cones...
Great video Steve really enjoy all the different camera angles and your commentary and the music. Love the camera under the cab while you drive thanks for sharing stay safe Steve.
That was nice of you Steve! Ya it sucks i was in a subway last week same crap! Everything has gone to hell. Back in the old days or my days you could get advance checks from your broker that most truck stops would cash . Try that now!
I live in Las Vegas I drive truck here in Las Vegas I know what you're talking about they want tips for everything here I don't do it if I'm in the casino yes but if I'm getting a haircut or getting something from the taco truck or getting something to eat the truck stops yes they want tips
That’s one thing I miss after moving to Florida is the quick trip pizzas and cheap bananas.
I totally agree with you on the state of fast food. . . . You should come to our great state of CA. Where the fast food workers make 20.00 an hour and on top of that most fast food places now don't do counter order services its all order kiosk. and of course the pay kiosk always ask for a tip.
They dont ask for a tip. They ask you to donate to McDonald's charity.
Lol 😆
I’m with you Steve. Eff that tipping bs.
I just found your channel & love the Cab over Pete with that heck of a load. Brings back memories of when I was a kid listing to C.W. McCall. You have some awesome camera views, thx for the vids. I agree w/ you on the BS with the Kiosk popping up everywhere. I first experienced a Kiosk on a trip passing through Bernalillo, NM at a Taco Bell. I was standing waiting for counter service & someone in the kitchen finally explained to me about the kiosk. Thx again
There is no parking for trucks. Then they have prepay parking which is ridiculous
That’s a cool shot of the engine.
Just got back from Mackinaw, Mi. Great truck show ther with many cab overs. Some working but mostly restored. The show was in the streets of St Ignasias , North off the bridge. After dark, over two hundred trucks put on a light show over the Mack Bridge thru Mackinaw City and back across the bridge! Never saw so many chicken lights and tires in my life!
Kwik trips are the best.
You just love truck stops Steve ,Lol
Every so often, I’ll hit a Subway inside a Walmart just for an Icee; no food. I always decline a tip.
Love the under the cab camera shot. Getting and giving that driver a shower card . Awesome, winning at life.
I love your different camera angles, best in trucking videos!!
Good shots of throttle and shift linkage.
Awesome job Steve, you and Orwell keep truckin'
Cones have triggered Big Fez lol 😂plus tips 😂too mutz 😂 Cheers 🍻
With all of that sarcasm, you must be feeling pretty good.
Man, I agree with you, truckstops suck nowadays. Go there at 6 o’clock in the morning to get coffee and breakfast and got nothing. Unbelievable I frequent the kwik trips up north because I drive for a company out of Minnesota and they are always on point. In there at 2 AM and they have breakfast and coffee. It’s a shame what this industry has become.
Breaking news : Steve is going to start his own truckstop in the future : Free showers, coffee and soda's for all peterbilt trucks only 🤣🚚
All trucks are made by men. So that means they are all Peter built. 😂
Person, at the desk typical Cmel Joky
Camel jokey
Ive stopped at one before they added the cones. there was rows of trucks almost blocking the entry/exit so I'm thinking that's why. the cones in the parking spaces is dumb and would do what you said and park their and take the cone.
First time watching one of your videos, Loving all the camera angles...subscribing
I think I have COE phobia! I drove freight liner COEs back in the 1980s, thinking back and wonder wtf was I thinking? Everyday was like being a 10 hour rodeo, you baked in the summer and froze in the winter... the only good thing I can say about one of them was it had a 350 Hp Cummins a 7 speed and couldn’t go fast enough to really hurt anyone!
At least we got free showers when we fueled up! 😖
I live in New York City. It's getting crazy now all the regular Subway shops are asking for a tip if you use the kiosk. And a bunch of the McDonald's here no longer have people at the counter. You can only order do the kiosk. And that's just the regular stores. It's getting crazy everywhere
It engine, making beautiful sounds and watching the linkage move around
It's crazy what these truck stops are doing to the truckers
They all do that not just at the truck stops
watching your vids makes me want to get my cdl buy a low boy and a pete and just drive.
Steve, carry your own bottle of Windex or glass cleaner. Thank you for what you do!! Keep up the great work!! 👍
holy smokes steve truck stops ain't like they use to be in the 80s safe travels
Kanosha home of the Rambler car.😮 loving the videos.😊
Kenosha*
Whoever is the president has no effect on fuel prices on shower cost. I remember back in 1990 cdl started the drivers started raising all kinds of problems with that. Its called the price of doing business. Stay safe and enjoy the video.
Wow thats a beutiful truck there was nothing like the cab- overs and there will never be anything like them, they are my favorite.
Hay Steve, Customer Service EVERYWHERE is GONE...
As for tips?? Around here, through the fast food drive thru, they want to keep your change on your burger purchase=They get mad when you want your change back??
Just to hand you the bag??? WTF???
Time to add a tip option on your own billings.
One for the driver, one for the truck.
Mystery destinations ...how intriguing !
Next time tell them you’ll give them a tip. Don’t eat yellow snow ❄️ lmfao 😂
That Gallops Truck Stop off U.S. 20 in Goshen was always nice when I drove a taxi for N&S. I could go in with a train crew and ask for a "Courtesy" cup for coffee and the fuel desk just handed me one.
Most McDonald's throughout the country have gone to that crazy kiosk order system and I've seen many that were listed as "OUT OF ORDER", so much for reducing costs.
THANK GOD!!! You finally got rid of the rusty rear rims😅
Here’s a tip! 3RD horse, 4TH RACE 👍
@@billdornan4379 😂😂😂😂😂
I worked at flying J and got tips all the time. They didn't pay shit so it was appreciated. Just out of the pokey needing a job not many choices.
Got that right things change for worst in trucking . Cant believe wasn't no one in fuel inland.
My uncle drove OTR, back in the 80s during summer break I would ride across the country stopping at truck stops back then it was a community the truck stops had good relations with drivers, drivers who didn't know each other would sit have a meal and bs like they were old friends. The waitresses would be busy rushing meals out bc they know drivers had little time, there was respect for each other. It is sad to see these guys getting price gouged by greed.
WOW! That APU has served you well.
Love watching under the truck shot Steve!!!
Man I had that same exact logbook binder 😂
Bought at a flying j back when pilot trash didn't own and old ladies made real food at 8$ buffet and you got heck of free drinks and food with fuel.
