Ian: "I have that complete."
Pat: "I'll trade you for the cart."
Ian: "No."
PRICELESS.
+Peter Skerritt he probably would have if it wasn't a gift. Ian's a big sweet softy
+Peter Skerritt
"I'll trade you for a smashed-up golden Nintendo World Championships..."
"NO."
+CunnininnuC Actually, you're probably right. I'm protective of gifts and tend not to sell or get rid of them. My other possessions tend to be fairly fluid. Case in point: When selling off my NES collection the only games I kept were the ones given to me as gifts and my copy of Mike Tyson's Punch-Out which was the first game I bought with my own money.
Ian FTW
Pat: oh.
*tiny violin plays*
"Cemented my dislike of Rare" when talking about games like Marble Madness and Snake Rattle N' Roll is an undefendable position, haha. That's clearly Ian wanting to be contrarian and I won't hear anything else about it.
THANK YOU for bringing up THQ! I've been saying for years they were the worst publisher/developer for the NES.
+Squarepainter Later they made better games like Spongebob Squarepants for the Gameboy Color.
+Rockymann27 Licensed publisher, it's hard to think of a worse one (LJN is not worse than THQ.) Ocean was pretty bad, too.
Unlicensed opens it up more. Color Dreams/Bunch Games, Active Enterprises, AGCI, AVE as Pat said. Awful games.
"I have that boxed complete"
"Trade you for the cart?"
That must have been a tempting offer
I know it's probably really sad, but for a good chunk of time I was really addicted to
NES Baby Boomer. The hit detection was spot on, but the necessity of memorization was ridiculous. However, that played directly into the addiction part of the game: memorizing so meticulously just to see if you could get to the next level.
Anybody else??
+Marko Polo oh my God! Yes to everything you just said . seriously.
Kinda like Gumshoe :)
Game was awesome
I wonder if there were any games where he felt like going full Dave Meltzer and giving it " *MINUS. FIVE. STARS.* "
If Ian wrote a load of reviews why isnt he named on the cover?
It's common for that type of book to credit the editor on the cover, even if there were other contributors. It's not like Pat's trying to hide the fact that other people worked on the project.
Yeah, good old Micronics, masters of the 15 frames per second scrolling and long load times.
5:31
Not sure if Pat will see this, but the game you were thinking of was definitely "Robodemons". It's another Color Dreams game, and it's even worse than you probably remember.
+ShinSHOGO Robodemons was horrible. Castle of Deceit was awful, too. I feel bad for anyone who bought them back in the day.
rosstedfordkendall
I feel bad for myself for even simply downloading a complete NES ROMs collection and finding them in there.
+ShinSHOGO I think my mind wiped itself - awful game. 1/2 star.
Pat the NES Punk
I try to forget that game happened, too.
But the death yell noise is hilarious, so it keeps popping back up in my head thanks to that.
Does he have a complete collection yet?
Like stadium events, peekaboo poker...
THQ was not a developer, but also a publisher similar to LJN as they started as a toy company too. A big difference is that LJN was owned by a bigger publisher and THQ got into publishing games on their own.
Their hay day was WCW vs NwO which used the Akai fighting engine eventually used in a ton of games like Def Jam and Naruto. More recently they had success with the Red Faction and Saint Row series until they went bankrupt in 2013 and their properties were sold off. Volition and Saints row were bought by Koch Media and Nordic Games bought the rest of THQ properties like Darksiders and Red Faction.
I fucking love that Butters doll.
I was about to buy the book when I saw $65 delivery to the UK. That's more than the product itself! I love pat and want to support him... but that's too much
I decided to pre-order that Ultimate NES Book. It does sound very interesting. I do have a few questions, though:
1. Any updates on specifically (day or week) when in June the book will be released?
2. When sent out, will there be a tracking number or such, or at least come type of confirmation?
3. If any problems arise, is the Contact/Email on your website the best way to contact you (or via twitter, or on here)...again, just in case?
Sorry for the questions. I've never ordered from your website before, so I wasn't sure how it all worked...
I agree with Pat about THQ being the worst game company on the NES. They made a ton of licensed games and they were all drek. Sony Imagesoft gets 2nd place for some unplayable games like Cliffhanger. Rare was on a learning curve because they mainly made games for the ZX Spectrum in England and had to learn how to make NES games from scratch. No Devkit whatsoever, so they get a pass from me, because I love Nightmare on Elm Street and RC Pro Am.
On the subject of Deathbots, that was an AVE game that I actually played a lot and kinda enjoy more than I should. I still think it could have been polished a bit and be fine. Also Robodemons might be the horror game.
+GameShowGarbage Yeah Robodemons is a sort of horror game and is... interesting to put it nicely. It makes for a decent speedrun to watch.
THQ was worse than LJN?
For the NES , oh yeah. LJN games at least felt finished. Wayne's World, Home Alone 1 and 2, Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle all felt unfinished and bugged to hell.
pat can you put a link for the book in description for mobile viewers
+casey sheedy

+casey sheedy ultimateNES.com
Thanks
Didn't know that you've finished the book. Ordered the Digital Edition. :)
Oh and my pick for worst publisher is tied between THQ and Mindscape.
You guys really need to get 2 identical cameras... It kills me seeing Pat so clear and Ian so blurry!
That's because Ian is always stoned. That blurriness comes from the layer of smoke that perpetually lines his room.
+Dreadjaws they're in the same room lol
that's how Ian looks in person.
d@mn, $65 for shipping!!!
You should start a shipping company instead.
"Action 52" was $199 for 52 broken games. So it wasn't only terrible, but a complete rip off as well.
R.C. Pro Am is still one of the best NES games to play today. made by no other than RARE. They're not that bad. The sequel was good too.
Wizards and Warriors is awesome too
And battletoads is awesome too 👍
I always thought of RARE as one of the best NES publishers. Not as good as Konami but possibly better than Tecmo.
Yeah idk what Ian is talking about. Pin*Bot was the best pinball game on the system, honestly way ahead of its time. Snake Rattle 'n Roll was really fun. Their port of Marble Madness was awesome!
And how the hell can we forget Danny Sullivan's Indy Heat?
Now if you want to talk developers you wouldn't expect to be trash... Bethesda...
Rare made a decent amount of good games.
Pat,congratulations on completing your NES manifesto,I can't wait to order this bad Jackson,You and Ian keep up the good work.
Is the physical book already out? Because the website still says "pre-order."
you guys sounded like you were speaking an alien language when you were saying all those games and companies that I've never heard of
What kind of binding are you using on your psychical edition of your book?
is the book out yet? The order site still says "preorder".
Can't wait until I get the physical copy. I'm holding off on reading it until I can hold it in my hands.
hey pat, really wanna get the book but $65 shipping to australia, bit steep
Can't wait for my physical copy to ship. Is it still going to be sometime this month or did it get pushed back?
+wantsomecorn The latest update on the KS says June :/ Waiting on mine too.
Beam's Aussie Rules Football and International Cricket were pretty good.
Another episode of Marketing Monday. Gotta feed the addiction. Right, Pat?
The worst game is Taboo: The Sixth Sense
Ocean was the worst for me, broken games and making them unbeatable so they didn't need to finish them.
60$ for the book? I would love to own that book but that's just too much for me
I'm screaming chiller at the screen but you're still not remembering it.
I was too. lol
It's hard to top Active Enterprises, IMO, but they hit the nail square with AVE and THQ. Awful games.
For me, LJN is kind of average. Yeah, they had some bad games, but some games were kind of fun. Gotcha, Nightmare on Elm Street (with four players), Punisher. Even Friday the 13th has more to the game than on the surface. Even if they did develop games (I know they just published), their library isn't that bad.
where's the link to purchase this book? The link in the video does not work
+Menacexp thepunkeffect.com/products-page/
I should really play Wayne's World on the NES sometime. I have the SNES version, bought it as a kid for my birthday and logged quite a bit of hours on it. It definitely wasn't good and I get that it barely tied into the skits/movies, but it was still playable.
The NES version is is even more shitty that the SNES one. It's just a bad game no matter what version it is. They all suck.
I'm kind of interested in your book actually, I mean you literally cover like every NES book. I will probably look into the digital version in the future.
Please tell Ian that's he's looking good! I know he said he's been going to the gym, and I just wanted to say, it's working! Love you guys.
Does the book include every NES game ever made, or just those released in the US?
Just wondering if it includes the likes of Aussie Rules Footy, Red Riding Hood, games published by Wisdom Tree and the collection of HES games.
+Maximum Gawnage HES and PAL exclusives are covered.
Pat the NES Punk
I must pick up a digital copy next payday! Want a physical copy, but postage to Australia would be a killer. :)
Hi Pat! I was wondering where I could find the 25th Anniversary Nes Marathon to Re-watch. I'm also having trouble find the first 5 parts of the 3rd marathon. I tried this link for the 1st marathon, but it didn't work. www.ustream.tv/recorded/10247989
Was the game Pat talking about at the end Chiller (the review that introduced the Evil NES)?
Baby boomer was pretty fun I thought. It was hard but fun playing with a friend!
Been watching a lot of these videos lately, and just realized I wasn't subscribed. XP Well that's sorted.
I think you're confusing Beam software for Radical entertainment. Most THQ games on the NES were developed by Radical, they are absolutely hideous. It's a miracle that Radical actually became a competent developer in the late 90s and onwards.
Beam Software developed mainly for Konami (Nightshade) , Mindscape (Roadblasters, 720), Activision (Three Stooges), Acclaim/LJN (Airwolf, The Back to the future games) and many others.
+CarozQH thanks for the correction. I just remember their name coming up a lot on games I wasn't enjoying =] (and I THINK they did Home Alone 2 for TH-Q)
Ian Ferguson
Home Alone 2 was made by Imagineering, the people behind the Simpsons and Barbie games :-|
Welp, I'm 0-2. That's what Google is for. Thanks for that correction, it actually makes sense. The stiffness of the controls and graphical styles are all relatively similar there.
Ian Ferguson
No problemo ;)
Hi, will this be going on sale on Amazon UK?
Oh man Deathbots.. Ruined my night just thinking about it.
Love Ian's Dutch jersey
pat that game was called chiller
+robert long Yea that was an awful port.
Miss these times
I'll have to look at THQ's NES library. I only know THQ through the Super Nintendo's NHL 98 and sports games on the PS/PS2, and all those were solid. I guess all companies have to start somewhere
THQ PS2 era was awesome. Destroy All Humans!
If Ian wrote some reviews, why isn't his name on the cover?
I like pyramid. Its no Hatris but fun.
You're a great person to listen to Ian, but when you said that 2/3 of your least favourite game makers on NES were laser back Capcom games and Rare, I lost a bit of respect. Ghost and Goblins is a bit clunky, but a classic nonetheless, same goes for Mega man 1. No idea why you would hate Rare, everything they put out is gold.
I actually like impossible mission II a lot..
What's everyone's favorite NES game (if you have one) of All time?
Mine's Ninja Gaiden
Id have to say my personal favorite is Guardian Legend
The Notorious MW - Nice.
Bucky O'Hare. Mos def. No contest.
Mine is Super Mario Bros. 3
Heroic Defeat - That _was_ a fun game.
I don't know a lot of bad NES games aside from some of the stuff the AVGN covered... I mean, I don't go out of my way to play bad games...
So if I had to pick my least favourite NES game out of all the games that I've played, I'd have to pick Metroid... And no, I'm not kidding...
+Ruko Michiharu To be fair, Metroid has aged quite horribly. I myself enjoy it but that's because I know how to progress through the game.
Probotector AUT And that's exactly why it's my least favourite... There are plenty of NES games, including games that came out before Metroid, that have aged better than it...
Granted, it's not the worst-aged NES game, but it has other problems...
For example, it is WAY more cryptic than Zelda, and not in a good way, and your punishment for dying is beyond unfair, no matter how many energy tanks you have, you always start with 30 health, so you have to keep farming for health pick-ups for what seems like an eternity before you can even bother trying to explore again, only to get obliterated again and again because enemies take away more health than health pick-ups recover, not to mention how getting lost is inevitable because SO many corridors look the same (Unless you're using Nintendo Power or a map, or both, which I'm sure many people who beat it did)
Now here's the thing, in Zelda not every screen looks the same, that's why I don't get lost in Zelda... Granted, Zelda also has its own set of problems, but that's another can of worms entirely...
But what REALLY gets under my skin is how you can't shoot enemies that are on the ground because you can't duck and shoot, or shoot down while jumping... I get that you have to use bombs to defeat them, but you don't start with the bombs, you have to go get them later, and even then, you have to put your bombs just in the right spot so that the enemies are passing by them by the time they explode, but still, when you're not able to kill the first enemies you see in the game because they're too short to shoot, you know your game is not well-designed...
Don't get me wrong though, I respect Metroid and what it started, and I really enjoy the other Metroid games, but the original Metroid I don't like a whole lot... It's frustrating, it's unfair, and you gotta REALLY master it in order to get any enjoyment out of it...
+Ruko Michiharu When Metroid was new, it was pretty revolutionary, but that was 1987. I can see why it hasn't aged well. It was one of those "you had to be there" games.
Metroid suffered from not having a map, drawing your own or following a guide is a must for it, if you do that it a decent game. Super Metroid well and truly fixed all of Metroid's issues
Worst NES game I've played is DK Jr Math, urgh
rosstedfordkendall I can totally see where you're coming from, and as I said in the end of my previous comment, I respect Metroid for what it started, but well, I don't enjoy playing it very much...
Any chance that you could find a printing partner in europe? Currently, shipping would cost more then the whole book.
Same for me :c I really want the book, but shipping it to Italy is way too expensive
+Fubeeo You live in Italy? Wow nice. The land of Olivetti. I'd like to visit Italy one day simply because of that fact haha... Your people made great computers in the 80's and early 90's.
If I had a special power where I could learn any language simply by snapping my fingers, but I could only do it once, then I'd choose Italian.
British game designers, like Rare, were sadistic assholes in the NES era. Battletoads I'm looking at you.
i hope your recommended some games for the AVGN to review.
Rare DID make some pretty shit games prior to the SNES era. They really pulled it together though and ended up being one of my favorites for two full console generations!
Here's to hoping Playtonic does well.
It would of been better as Wally Bear and the gang bang.
Ian bouncing his foot is making Pat's fan shake. I had important things to contribute to this, but that's what I noticed.
what are the worst games you guys ever played?
It's funny that LJN and THQ were founded by same guy.
Rare? Battletoads was ok, the first Wizards & Warriors was ok...goes down from there. R.C. Pro-Am was decent. I love California Games. HELL, THEY MADE DANNY SULLIVAN"S INDY HEAT HAHAHA EH maybe they aren't as good as I think their come to think about it now...Was the game you were thinking about maybe be Chiller?
Did you guys know THQ and LJN were owned/created by the same person?
My Creator is communicating to others on video. Thanks.
Hey Pat, how many stars did you give to Stadium Events?
+JohnyFan 1.5.
+Pat the NES Punk Missed opportunity you should have said buy the book and find out.
I will buy the book anyway Shawn. I asked because it seemed to me that Pat gives low ratings to the games he doesn't own like Bubble Bath Babes, Hot Sluts and Stadium Events. Those are such classics...
+JohnyFan buy the book.
+JohnyFan Bubble Bath Babes is not actually a bad game. "Hot Sluts" is not a game (that I know of).
I'm sooo looking forward to this book.
Really like this channel but almost choked on my food when I saw the price of your book.
Will your book ship to the UK Pat?
what did double dragon 3 get
I actually really liked Section Z
Robodemons...ouch.
i want to get pats book but can you imagine if the nerd made one lol ljn ev page then jeckyl and hyde
We all know what the worst nes games r. 1. Karate kid 2. Friday the 13th 3. Dick Tracy 4. Nightmare on Elm Street 5. Kid kool 6. Gillagans island 7. Target renagage 8. Deadly towers 3 9. Mario is missing 10. Mario's time machine 11. Day dreaming Davie 12. The adventures of bayou Billy 13. Double dragon 3 14. Q Bert 15. Rbi baseball. 16. Time Lord 17. Mission impossible 18. North and South 19. Silent service and 20. Frankenstien and don't forget about most of the sports games on nes like double dribble and Wayne gretsky hockey which really sucked.
really looking forward to read the book!
Ian why are you wearing a Dutch national soccer league shirt? I am from The Netherlands so its the first thing i noticed :)
I had a love hate relationship with Ian up to this point, but you badmouth Rare, my favorite video game company of past present and future, and now it's full on. Ian, you are poop sandwiches.
they did some shitty games in the good ol day
+Jonqen nope. All great. All misunderstood technical wonders.
lol some fanboys actually are like that... in all seriousness people shouldn't personify companies. They're not sentient people, they're just a name. They don't deserve anybody's esteem. Who does deserve it is people working at the company, but they change all the time, especially at Rare given their history. So it makes no sense to still love a company that has none of its former people.
I love the original team, and the amazing work they did for the NES, SNES and N64. I couldnt give two shits after the buyout,
bad Street brawler was bad
chiller?
Color dreams best game is crystal mines
Metal Fighter was pretty good, and P'radikus Conflict was alright. Anything else isn't worth playing IMO.
cant wait for the book!
I would like to buy a physical copy of the book, where can I find it... The UA-cam video says press this link on the screen but I get nothing... Help a brother out
+Mike Aubry thepunkeffect.com/products-page/
link doesn't work on mobile or the app. sorry.
THQ is the king of shitty movie licensed games
+Brandon Hey Monster House was pretty good... Had it for the GameCube...
Destroy All Humans!
2 questions about the book: is it shipped to Europe? and are Japanese exclusive games (aka Famicom games) at all covered in the book?
Sure it's shipped to Europe, but you'll pay double the price of what the book costs for the shipping alone
I love you Ian
They look so young here
Top gun was another shitty nes game
The link doesn't work for my smart-phone. Is this book on Amazon?
+i8thebaconcheezburgr Here you do: ultimateNES.com
+Pat the NES Punk Look, everyone, Pat made a typo! He's an actual human being! What! (Sorry, Pat, just wanted to beat the comment trolls to the punch) .
Have any of you played robodemons by color dreams. its an abomination
+PNG _Gamer I think that might be the horror game Pat was trying to think of. Yeah, it's really bad.
Lol i did a lets play of it on my channel two weeks ago. Its so bad its funny
Ian supports the Netherlands? I thought he was Irish?
I'm a mutt and a US native but for sake of ease if background comes up I usually claim Scottish heritage, Ferguson last name and all.
As far as supporting the Netherlands? When I get into a sport I usually make a quick team pick based on a few things like how exciting they were when I first saw them play or as simple as a literal coin toss and then I get attached. I very mutch enjoyed Dutch soccer in the early 2000s. These days it's rather lacking yet I hold out hope. It's like someone in Buffalo constantly buying Bills jerseys.
+Ian Ferguson But RARE made the R.C. Pro Am games. I don't understand your cemented hatred.
Ian Ferguson Yup, dutch football is in an alltime low in the 21st century. Not being able to qualify for the first 24 team Euro cup was a big blow and an embarrassment.
But I agree with you, they played really great football and had great players for most of the 2000s.
Mickael Mc what does this have to do with the comment thread?
The Gogoy blame google plus
hmm
I can't play the podcast in any app or browser (on my phone) what's up?
Why is Ian wearing a dutch soccer shirt with the dutch soccer association logo on it? You are in America. Where would you even buy that?
Hendrik Hans Havermoudt Kind of late but you can order one of those in almost any sports store,i have the Japan soccer team shirt
Has anyone gotten their book yet? Cause I have not, and I have not gotten an email saying it's been shipped or anything. I live in Norway tho, so maybe international shipping is still a bit late or what?
is Ian really wearing a dutch soccer shirt?
+Yaivi Plays Yep.
Hup Holland hup!
***** It's got a lot to do with expectations, and anyone who has been watching them knows the Dutch are, unfortunately, just a shadow of their former selves. The Dutch eredivisie is not exactly a top tier or even second tier league anymore, and there are very few players in the Dutch squad playing at top tier clubs around Europe. Just compare the value of the current Dutch squad to that of the English squad - it's shocking just how far the Dutch have fallen. The fact that the Netherlands finished in third place during the 2014 world cup is nothing short of miraculous, really, considering how Dutch football has been in a rapid decline since 2011-2012. It's a shame, because the Netherlands have had some great exciting players and squads in the past. Also, a victory during qualifying matches could've been a fluke, but this actually made Iceland go to the quarter finals, that really makes all the difference.
***** Hey, Romania made it to Euro 2016 at least. The same can't be said for Holland. ;) I really think Holland are going to have a very tough campaign to qualify for the 2018 World Cup. :/
I'm holding onto the past.
You guys trash AVE and then right away say that Bubble Bath Babes is a good game. BBB is literally just a reskinned AVE Mermaids of Atlantis. :)
+quiet451 It's the opposite, actually. BBB came first.
+Pat the NES Punk Touche. I guess this is why I have to buy the book!
how much is the book going for? $60? can you do $20?
+Dylan Bragers Digital version is $30.
