I got the Spark amp (still waiting for it), but really appreciate your honest reviews on it. It's pretty clear Positive Grid has some kind of deal with UA-camrs because all the ones that clearly were gifted them use basically the same talking points.
Every amp has a drawback of some kind, but their reviews would make you think the amp would make you want to replace every tube amp you own. Now, of course, I have no problem people getting gear for reviews, but the way it's being done made me very skeptical.
Anyways, I appreciate your reviews. I was looking at this amp and decided to go w/ the Spark because it has a few more features. Having other amps I don't need the best sound to come from my practice amp. The Katana is cool too in that price range, but I have the Fender Champion 50 that I'm pretty happy with.
I may grab one of these amps one day because they do sound great, however.
My Yamaha vs Spark video comes out on Friday!
I like my Spark amp too...did have a hum issue because the plug is not grounded but the workaround is to connect your amp to computer and connect your computer with a grounded plug it came with....other option is to contact Spark and they will send a grounded plug to you....I do not have mine yet ....hopefully it won't take 5 months to get like my amp....lol.....will have to see...your reviews are really well done....very informative and you give alot of examples of sound and really like your very objective reviews...keep them coming.....cheers!
Thanks BB! I have a shootout between this and the Spark coming out in two weeks!
I had the original THR10 back when they came out. The brown sound was probably the best huge-stadium-rock-at-bedroom level I've ever gotten & I've been down the rabbit hole with boutique tube amps/attenuators/fancy power scaling, etc. The only weak point was the cleans just weren't loud enough even for bedroom levels.
Yeah one of my favorite UA-cam players, Cameron Cooper plays one for his EVH tones and they are stellar! Check out his channel and look for the EVH stuff. That kid melts faces!
My son is starting college too, but I was thinking new practice amp for me! Lol ... I was searching UA-cam for a PG Spark vs. Vox Adio GT Air (you know, the one that looks like a purse) video (there isn’t one) ... found your channel (the exciting first spark video) and then the next one, and then found my way here. Great honest reviews, thanks! So ...have you tried the Adio?
I have not. But I’ve got a Spark shootout with the Yamaha coming up in 2 weeks! Would love to have you subscribe if not already and please spread the word! 😜🤘🏻🎸
What do you think...better than the spark or just different. So far I'm loving my spark . Thanks for another good show.
Thanks! I have Spark vs Yamaha coming up in two weeks so no spoilers! 🤘🏻🎸
i had the exact same question . (i just got my spark and for 225 $ i dont think i could of spent my money better ?)
Sounded pretty good. How do you think this compares to the Positive Grid? Have a great and safe weekend
I have a VS video between the two coming up in two weeks so I don't want to be a spoiler. Thanks George!
Suggestion, put two lapel mikes in front of both speakers. Also direct is a good way to demo the amp.
Great suggestions but I don't have that other than for speaking. Disagree about the direct as a way to demo. Unless I'm going to be using it direct a lot or all of the time, me as a UA-cam watcher wants to see it mic'd up. Thanks for the input though - it's always nice to hear a fresh perspective.
Can’t wait for the shootout. I received my spark last week and it’s really good. I have been coveting the THR since the older model but could never pull the trigger. I still want the THR, I just wish it was just a little less money like the spark.
Yeah it’ll be up in two weeks! Thanks!
You get what you pay for!
This wasn’t on my radar for some reason when I decided to buy the Spark. I’m looking forward to your shootout between the two. I’m hoping I made the right choice for myself. I know Positive Grid pissed you off. With your shootout between the two I’m hoping you can keep that part separate between them and adjust your value of them after as a different variable. I’m not really sure why I didn’t look at the Yamaha as a practice option. I’m guessing it just came down to all the hype around the Spark. I’ll really be looking forward to you showing the difference bud. Have fun man!
One last thing bud. Let us know why you went with this over the Spark for your son.
Check out my Spark vs AMPLIFi if you want to see it hard feelings affect that assessment! Lol
My son likes simple things without too much effects or complexity plus I didn’t have the luxury of waiting for months to get it. As it was I had to scramble to get the Yamaha as it was not in stock most places. I just think it’s a better fit for him
GearGasms Makes sense to me man lol. Yeah I’ll check out that video. I thought I had seen it, but I’ve seen so many different ones. I’ll go look it up.
I really hope you compare this to the Spark some day. I have the THR5 and Spark but I like the Spark better mainly because of the Blue-tooth phone App. For sound I think there's too much bass in the Spark for a practice amp. The bass carries though the house and in this case less bass is preferred in my opinion.
I have a shootout coming up in two weeks!
Same
Hey Thanks for the first look. Going back between this vid and the one you did on the Spark, I like the tones from the Yamaha MUCH better, the Spark tends to sound the same in any of the gain sounds...kinda like a blanket is covering it. With the Yamaha, the cab emulations are pretty sweet as well. The one draw back with the Yamaha is no ability to have multiple effects running...kind of a bummer there. Question, the software for the Yamaha does not allow you to have multiple effects like the Spark? All in all, I really like the Yamaha but man they are expensive for what they are. Thanks again for the vid and I look forward to a head to head yamaha vs. spark. HOWEVER...KATANA MK II 100W BABY!!
Yes there will be a Yamaha vs Spark in two weeks. I think the THR is stronger in the high gain settings. You can have multiple effects with the Yamaha like the Spark
@@GearGasms Very cool...I SHOULD have said the Yamaha cannot have multiple modulation effects...sorry about that. I am old and "mis-speak"! :P
Yeah that’s true of both. But with AMPLIFi you can
The thr10ii wireless has a killer feature: the battery. You can play everywhere.
Yeah that seems pretty cool but I worry about replacing the battery at some point because all rechargeables fail eventually
@@GearGasms true, and also the fact the the Line 6 G10T transmitter for wireless playing must be acquired separately isn't nice. Good review, thanks!
Hi. I noticed that changes to amp setting she's amp simulated on the far rght, such as British 4by 12 or American 4 by 12
It does
Aha.... your son is going away to college in a few weeks, so you spend time with his amp.😁
The sounds are pretty cool. I'd like to hear what it sounds like if you put a mic in front of it and let it blast through a PA system. 🤔
Actually he left for a vacation with his friends the day after he got it and I shot a bunch of content with it then. He just now tried it today for the first time
Gotta break it in ;)
Just wondering if this amp loses tone at VERY low volume. Playing in an apartment and desperately trying to find an amp that stays true. Any comments would be appreciated.
No it excels at low volume or at least as well as anything else does. Would love to have you subscribe if not already! Thanks
Thank you and just subscribed. Greatly appreciated.
Welcome to the family!
Hmm, this looks like a fascinating subject, esp for those of us who don't care about gadgets. Thanks, Alan. I'm about to go swimming right now, so I'll have to stop watching at the 2 minute mark. But I'll be back later for the jokes! See ya!
Lol
@@GearGasms Yo, havent had a chance to watch it all yet. But your sense of humor is similar to mine. Some of the jokes are funny, and some of them are so unfunny you have to laugh at how unfunny they are.
Oh that Charvette 😋
Yes, I've had that guitar for 30 years! Yikes
@GearGasms I've got that exact same Charvette - had mine 24 years! So awesome seeing one being played in your vid!
Yeah they’re pretty rare out in the wild! I have a full video on this guitar if you’re interested!
Positive grid spark vs Yamaha?
Friday at 10am EDT - subscribe so you don’t miss It!
Commented before you mentioned it. Yes I am a doofius
Keith Conner no you’re not!
I like yamaha stuff, but the sticker shock is a little hard to get past.
Yes it’s not cheap!
Dude, are you aware of "disable reverb" feature?
Thanks for the feedback - I actually do appreciate it. It's painful sometimes but helps me get better at doing this! Would love to have you subscribe if you'd like to follow my progress!
Well, I said I was gonna come back and listen to the whole thing for the jokes, so I settled back in my Lazy Boy and gave it a listen. Imagine my surprise when I woke up at about the 18 minute mark and I'm like, Wait! He didn't do too many jokes in this one! Well, there's always next time!
Just the Han Solo quip I think lol
@@GearGasms Yep, that was a good one!
@@GearGasms Yep, that was a good one!
Good demo & review. Time to jettison the pedal board and amp. No longer gigging, seldom jamming, just annoying wife and neighbors. Thnx!
You’re welcome! Would love to have you subscribe if not already and come back and tell us how you like it! Thanks! 🎸🤘🏻
Thanks for playing chords. Some of these UA-cam dudes just try to show off their skills with annoying noodling. IMO- you gotta play chords to get the real feel of the amp.
Thanks! I’ve been guilty of the overnoodle too though! Would love to have you subscribe if not already- thanks!
Not at all impressed, but my ears are “closed for business.” I’m at a point where I’m very content what I have. I’ll take my Spark, Bias Mini Guitar head, and small collection of tube amps. I’m strictly speaking out loud to myself. If I can’t get it done with those pieces of gear, I should switch to banjo. As someone who has gone way overboard with buying equipment, I’ve found that the clutter of too many choices has stunted my growth as a musician, messed up my finances, and almost cost me my marriage. I’ve ended up spending more time turning dials or fiddling around with software, than getting better on my instrument. Don’t get me wrong-I completely understand the buzz you get when the UPS driver drops off a box containing a new gizmo. But I’ve found in my case that it ends up being counter-productive. The Beatles used a very small collection of instruments to make some of the best music ever recorded. The same went for me when I had exactly what I needed and no more.
I am grateful for everyone who takes time to make these demo videos. I apologize for the rant, though I do know that there are plenty of musicians out there who are in the same spot as me. Wanting and having can be two very different things. In short, buy whatever you want to, but ask yourself if it will really add something significant to your skill. Always put the music first.
This was no rant - it was truth! I totally get it about knob tweaking getting in the way. Having too many guitars does the same thing. I’ve been thinning that herd and now am down to about 26 or so. Yeah lol. Would love to have you subscribe if not already! Thanks Bill!
Hey Alan, the THR10II was what I had in mind earlier (before the Spark was delivered). Now I have the Spark and the Katana 50 MKII.
THR10II - Katana 50 MKII:
ALWAYS the Katana as long as you don't have to change locations frequently or have to travel with it. Also the fact, that the THR clocks in 68 Euro more than the Katana at that price range may be a point (at Thomann THR 311 Euro, Katana 243 Euro actually). I don't have the THR so why Katana? The Katana brings you a real guitar sound with an adult 12" guitar speaker that sounds really decent. The power soak down to 0.5 Watts lets you crank the power amp to the max and control the overall volume via the preamp so gorgeous and the sound is really a blast for an amp at that price range. Fanboy? Yes, finally 😍
THR10II - Spark 40:
If you need a practice amp immediately the Yamaha will be your horse to ride. Or the Katana if you don't need that "mobility". If you are patient and already have good gear, go for the Spark to get these extra features with the app. This is, of course, theoretically.
Looking forward for the shootout. Cheers \o/
Yes there will be a shootout two weeks!
@@GearGasms Awesome! Thanks for your work \o/
It looks more like my toaster
lol - yes the aesthetics have always been strange to me with these little guys
@@GearGasms I think it looks cool. It's funny, I would say one of the biggest selling points of the amp for most people is the way it looks lol. It's interesting looking without being out of place IMO. You could have that in a nice living room and most people wouldn't have a clue it was an amp. I think that's what they were going for.
The wife isn't letting me keep the katana in the living room lol
My wife lets me keep the Spark in the family room- even cleared some family photos to free up a shelf for it! Lol - the Yamaha does look cool when it’s on though!
