- Trying out the Yamaha THR10 II. I have tried a similar amp back in the day but now it's time to try the more recent and updated one.

I like that Solar with invisible body
Its a 1/100 from the limited edition camo collection they did in 2019
it's the john cena edition
"U can't see me" John Cena
It is from the Solar "Bara nacken" range.
No, thats just the Solar Camo paint LP guitar.
I'm surprised some people think the design is boring. It was the only amp that stood out to me at the music shop because every other amp had the same black-and-grey box look to it. This one feels to carry around because it looks like a "fashion item" while also packing great features. I like the handle as well.
Yeah that is weird to me. One of the best looking amps imho.
@@Tzadeck it's looking gorgeous.
It looks really nice. You can treat it as a piece of decoration at home as well. Has a good design, you can keep it in your living room and people won't say "argh, what is this thing doing here?" Probably just coming from a metal guy, he likes the black stuff instead of something that looks more jazzy/poppy (?). I like it, pity it's that expensive, but I'd love to have it.
I think the only problem with it is the handle. It should not be fix (in my opinion). Soemtiems taht extra 6-7cm counts a lot, if you want to pack it.
I really like the design.
I played through one today in my local store and it blew me away. Such a great metal sound. It really chugs.
Crazy thing is that it reacts better to the coil split pickups than my 5150 ICONIC 40w full tube. Clean or heavy gain mode...
I love all of yamahas musical stuff. From the saxophones to the drums, it’s all high quality. Wish I had one of these
If I closed my eyes and heard this video I would never think those sounds are coming out of that little amp! That thing sounds pretty damn good!
When it comes to getting a good amp tone quickly, nothing beats the THR for me. The amp selection covers every amp tone I need, the built in compressor and reverbs are excellent, and the speaker cab selection is solid. It really sings like a tube amp when the master knob is all the way up, doesn't sound digital at all, and it fits on my studio desktop. Brilliant piece of kit.
I just sold my Helix because I couldn't get it to sound any better than my THR. That's how good it is. Either that or I suck at setting up the Helix. 😄
That little Yamaha amp is the best desktop units ever built. For what it is and what it does, you cannot beat it
Sounds amazing ola..youre riffs choice interesting as always🤘
I’ve had this one for a couple years now and I gotta say for a true bedroom amp it’s hard to beat. The Bluetooth effects you can control from an app are pretty cool. Make sure to play around with the cab choices on the app to dial in a metal tone.
can you hook it up to a cabinet?
@@g43s no but there is a 100 watt head version although I think it’s older.
@@g43s You would need a poweramp (like the seymour duncan powerstage 170/200) and the THR30II version, Instead of the poweramp you could buy a frfr PA speaker, and would probably work better than a traditional guitar cabinet since you could keep the cab sims from the unit itself.
Listening to this video through my Yamaha THR10 I haha. Great practice amp!
Ola -" It's actually kinda loud" (increases the volume) Love it!
Great demo. Amazing playing man.
The MASTER knob is where it’s at with the THR series. Slam those virtual power tubes!
So so true, not only it actually "pushes" the virtual tubes, but it genuinely sounds incredible at low volumes (kids are sleeping low volumes)
@@rotemshoshani424 how do you both slam the "tubes" by raising the master while keeping it quiet enough to not wake the kids? I don't understand
@@moobox first off, for me, it's super convenient with headphones, if you opt for playing through the speakers, obviously at low volumes it'll be hard to notice the nuances of raising master, but.. if you want to get the feel, use the modern > clean setting at low volume then crank the master the notice differences
@@moobox I'm guessing he means that he raises the master while lowering the guitar output dial...just a guess though!
Hi Ola, I have this amplifier, the wireless version THR10II-W, it has a battery as well, so the same features as the Katana Air. It works perfectly well plugged in a mac with USB cable I also use it as a sound card with Logic Pro. It's a shame you couldn't make it work on the computer, the possibilities offered by the computer software and the mobile app are awesome, with many different effects and many cab sims. Much more options than on the amplifier panel only. I hope the people watching this video won't think this amp doesn't work on computers and is not wireless or whatever. I have tried the Boss Katana Air too, which is great value for the price, but this Yamaha outclasses it in many ways. Cheers !
This sounds actually really good for a travel/practice amp!
Yep, the special channel has less scoop in the mid range. Thanks for making another video, of what I think, is the best value entry amp in the biz. Side note: My gen 1 THRX does have AC and DC power.
I've been waiting for sooo loong😭😭😭
I have the exact same model. Really love it.
Also have the Spark. Much prefer the Yamaha.
I have one of these, the 1st gen, and I like it! Good for on the go!
You know anything from motorcycle, to keyboards, and countless other thing Yamaha makes, you know it's going to be a quaulty product! Even though I'm not a huge fan of this particular product, I can see the potential I'm this lunch box amp
Now, I'm just waiting for Honda to start making guitars and amps. I think Sony will release a guitar before Honda does though.
@@kiillabytez If Honda or even Toyota made guitars, I imagine they'd be like ESP/LTD guitars.
@@kiillabytez LOL Honda would make a kick ass guitar, but i dont think the biggest gasoline motor producer in the world is going to venture into the music world anytime soon 😂
@@jmabs5096 they should.
solar guitars have possibly the coolest guitar shape ever, they are pointy without looking stupid, theres an elegance to them, brilliant design
exactly, looks more elegant that an Ibanez RG550 ..and I do not like "Metal" shaped Gtrs
I dislike them
I have the THR30II, I bought a boss katana air but wasn't happy with the sound and then I gave the thr30 a go and it was love at first note
I have the green meanie THR10X. Got one as an "open box" about the same time the new ones came in so great price. It's an awesome amp, often just use Brown II setting with gain about 12 o'clock and a little bit of reverb - sounds awesome. Prefer the colour and the option to just put normal AA batteries (or rechargeable). Only option for batteries with version II is the wireless which adds heaps to the cost.
I've got the same model, it's terrific and still holds up with its sound after all the advancements in the amp sim technology.
You need to do the video again you missed 60% of the amp simulations. You have to connect your smartphone in order to switch to black or green mode. With the physical panel, you only get the old cream mark 1 version on the amp. Plus with the smartphone you can engage the compressor in order to boost the amp. Most cool new features are on the app.
You need to eet deez nutz
Ridiculous design.
If a guy who tries gear for a living can't find all the settings, then the settings are too hard to find.
@@Stig69 maybe the guy reviewing gear should be clever enough to read the fucking info that comes with it
@@hchoe741 😂😂😂
YAMAHA THR are great desktop amps! I own one of the old THR10s and it's honestly my go-to amp, since i can play with a nice sound and it doesn't blow out my ears
I absolutely LOVE the look of this amp. I don't know why people seem to dislike it so much 😀 Makes a nice change from the black cubes 😁
there are the other two amp categories you haven't found. each of them has unique Hi-gain & Lead models.
I have this and it sounds great. This is THE solution for, you want to practice but you live in an apartment. It’s NOT for gigging and of course it’s not going to replace your high gain rig.
Most of the settings are in the app but you can save your presets or custom builds to the top mounted preset buttons and from then on you don’t have to access the app.
I loved that invisible body solar, so awesome
I own a first gen 10x. Still love it for what it is. Living room jam while watching tv. It won’t replace your amps, but it was never intended for that.
I use mine the exact same way. Great for practicing
I am waiting on mine to come in. I have a heavy to lug '96 Ampeg Reverberocket R12R (not for metal) and I wanted a practice rig that sounds good, lightweight enough to take out for casual jams and can run pedals through. I knew a guy who had the previous generation and that thing was loud for what it was. We told him to turn it down😄. I'm paring down my amps. I'm keeping my Ampeg always, but selling my Supro Blues King 12 (not bonding with it).
I've owned both the Katana Air and the THR30II and I MUCH prefer the Yamaha. Sounds so much better IMO.
I heard that with the newest versions, you can basically turn any Yamaha THR version into any other, like the green X one into bluesy C
What's up Ola, can't take my eyes off the wall of Axe's and especially the one that is just the Neck🤘
It has the body of John Cena.
Gotta love a necktar, ideal for silent practice.
I don't see any camouflage finishes
That's Ola's pride and joy:
The Solar Trans-visible Mk II.
The Mk I had such a transparent sound the entire guitar disappeared!
Invisible guitar.
Not to bad,not to bad at all!!!Thanks Ola for the great content!!!🤘😜👍
Me: That sounds chuggy!
Ola: It's kinda not a decent sound for metal.
Me: Yeah, it's not a decent sound
everyone makes headless guitars. solar makes bodyless guitars
What 😭😭😭
This yamaha little amps are awesome, i still own the green one and it is the amp i play the most.
I have the old green one and love it.
Yamaha! The best company in the world that makes basses, guitars, amps, pianos, ski-doos, and motorcycles. I may be joking, but my #1 recording bass is a '78 BB800.
Honda makes good cars😂
true bro!!
generators , outboards…
Awesome! That little riff @3:17 reminds me of the intro on Jon Gomm Passionflower.
Probably late, but just wanna say I dig the guitars on the wall and the whole setting. Good job👍
The best demo of this amp I have seen. Thanks Ola!
Ola!!! U didn't try the real metal setting on this little beast! (change the models in the app via bluetooth if you don't have the 30W version to MODERN, and then select the special amp). It's a really tight simulation with a boost in the front that can take even 7 or 8 strings with no problem! Cheers.
Nice! I heard that Chicken Pickin’ at the beginning. Sounds great. I still gotta start working on that again one of these days too. 🤘🏻🎸🇺🇸
I've always thought they looked really cool and original!
Got the Green one, had it years in the living room. Great with the app also.
That's the one i've got too. It's funny because about a year ago they started going up in value. They sell used now for more than i paid new.
@@AchillesWrath1 interesting, didn't know that.. shows how long we've had them for!
Got a green one too. Great value and small footprint. It has a lot of hairy knackers for the price
What does the app do?
@@Reevesy791 you can create and edit and save loads of patches and edit a couple more things like choosing a cab to go with a patch and add a compressor
You can tweak a lot with the companion app, different cabs and so on. Pretty versatile. And you can assign different presets to each of the different modes.
I have the Yamaha thr30II w and it’s f...ing awesome.
i got my POD HD Bean (old this days) connected to my thr 10 X, and give"s me what the pod was missing.. i made a tone very similar to Despised Icon.
I like the fact we can plug in pedals on this amp, and also work as a interface
why you need POD Bean with this?
Nice man!!!!
The thumbs up at the end was everything
Nice review. Special reminds me of that crashing distortion similar to James Hetfield Mesa sound
I don't remember how improved the THR10 II is to the original one but I know the main update is that it has all the original versions (cream, green and black) built into it for roughly the same price as just one of them. I really like mine. It's quick and easy to just set up and play and the effects sound good immediately. Great for a quick jam.
hmm nice to know it's supposed to have all 3 older types in this newer 1. Would you say that the old THR10X was more hi-gain than the new THR10II, or is the new one also able to match the super-hi gain sound of the older one?
@@SixStringOverdose Can't say because I only got to try the original cream colored one before it. But I'd say the THR10II can get a really nice high gain tone. I didn't bring it with me when I moved to Japan so I can't really say which settings I have on it, but I think it was the boutique setting that could chug really well. I think it should be the same as the original models.
The THR30ii is definitely the one to get. The line out feature alone is worth the price of admission unless you're going to go straight to the THR Head.
Solar Guitars look very well finished and this one looks so classy even is a pointy Gtr..... but that headstock seems that can be dangerous!
Reminds me of a lambo color
It also has built in wireless. It works with the Line 6 G10 transmitter.
The newest version is really awesome with all the versions blended into one and the ability to go wireless.
I wish you guys could have been there forty years ago when I was writing to Marshall to figure out how to get a footswitch controlled volume boost out of my JCM800 for solos. You don't know you're born! lol (Marshall were very helpful, BTW and sent me the electronic parts I needed to do the mod.)
Relay G10II is smashing with this so ! Kiss from france !
finally a realistic review, not just some guy shredding up and down the fretboard.
The solar Duncan pick ups sound great! 🤓
Hey, Ola! Can you also review the new Blackstar ID: Core V3? I'm curious to see your take on it. Love your content! Especially "Will It Chug!"
Have one and love it
At first I was like meh but it actually sounds pretty darn good when you dialed it in.
You missed A LOT without the app... like 80% of this amp
I agree 100%
I was considering getting one of these just as an amp to play around with because I’ve been looking for something like this, within the amp, can you channel more distortion for hard rock and metal and stuff or is the amp gain as far as it goes
pretty lame having to need an app to fully experience an amp.
@@Ricardo_Samano Good luck to find an amp this size with controls on the painel for speaker tuning, preset list, different cabs, output levels, gate parameters, all fx options and parameters, led control, DI mode for dry record, USB output controls etc...
@@sophisticatedgentlemen8342 Ola was on the classic mode only, you still have the modern and boutique modes and both have more hi gain channels, specially the modern mode and it's lead channel (jcm 800 kinda), hi gain channel (boosted 5150 kinda) and special (hi gain amp for low tuned guitars) are preeetty gainny.
Ola, you have to try the positive grid Spark amplifier, I have a feeling you’ll be pleasantly surprised. I own one and plug in to mine daily. Honestly I go back and forth to my Boss Katana 50 and the Spark 40 just for variety, you know us gear fanatics lol. One tip Ola, use the app when you check out the Spark, I love the Orange Rockerverb with a drive pedal, chug life for days! Haha
My spark won't even connect anymore. To tablet or phone. And of course Positive Grid SUCKS for any help
2:12 - New Headstock incoming!
Precision drive in front is magic.
Ah finally :) :) !! I always hoped you will cover this amp one day!! I have the THR30 and of all my gear, it’s by far my wife’s favorite… I don’t know if it’s the color or the sound ^^ but you should definitely make a part 2 video. For us Metal heads, there is the lead modern, the special boutique and special modern that are killer 🤘🏻
I have this amp with the line 6 wireless unit, it’s a great amp when you hook it up to your phone. It’s great if you want to practice quietly and still get a good sound.
I have the THR30II Wireless. Funny you said that maybe the software connection troubles could be related to Apple. I cannot for the life of me get it connected to my pc or Samsung phone haha. Guess its just a Yamaha problem. Besides that I love playing on it.
Im using crappier little practice amps aux to subbed sound bars, sounds great, about 100 bucks per setup.
What are you teasering there in the background? A different headstock design for the Vs? Reminds me of your solar bass you had standing in the back long before officially releasing it.
on mac you need to allow a permission for the driver. I had the same problem on my older THR10. You can find it in the system settings
Howzit! My name is Bom Lolo and I'll be opening up a New store in Seattle in August exclusively selling FIREFLY GUITAR'S.
Not a bad amp you got there mate.
Ola, would be nice to have your review on the PositiveGrid Spark amp. Hope you check it out soon. Cheers
if you want wireless and bluetooth you have to purchase the thr10 II W o THR 30 II W, but the wireless receiver (line 6 g10) was sold separately. the wireless version I think have rechargeable lithium battery without the need to buy a stock of battery like the katana. with the app you can select 3 type of amp for every model.
always great demos! BUT, this is a stereo unit and even in mono the mic must be positioned between the speakers to capture a true reference that matches the actual un miked so your listeners get a better idea of the actual sound. And, how about a direct in from the headphone jack! Thats how it will sound if used DI live!
You're a great guitarist
I love all the comment telling a man who doesn't care, that he didn't do the review right 👌🏻
You seem to care, so i want to tell you i think you did the comment right
He should care. It's literally his job.
Ola could you make another video of the ENGL Savage Mark II again?
And if you can share any suggestions on dialing a death metal tone with it?
Big fan of yours amigo!!
🤘🏽👹🤘🏽
To be honest this isn’t meant for a loud chugging song. It’s a portable amp with effects that sounds good for Eddie Van Halen style solos or if you wanna get some 80s pop effects like say you liked to play a lot of rush songs
The chorus effect with echo delay reminds me of Annihilator!
You should check the other modes, Ola. It has 3 modes : classic, modern and boutique.
That brick finish Solar looks awesome, Special Edition soon?
Ola - "It's chugging you know" 😲 6:31
It looks good, really into the grille design. Sounds good too.
Hey Ola, I have one of these and I use the app on my iPhone to edit tones. I did manage to connect it to my Mac in logic for recording. Sounds pretty good for it’s size and price 👍
Keep up the awesome work dude
lead probably means jcm800, and you can also max the volume + gain and use the master volume
I like the green one
Special was good. Rock on!
I have a thr5 that I’ve been using for the last 3 years nearly, and I’m looking to purchase another amp. I’ve narrowed it down to this amp (the thr30 is out of my budget) or a boss katana 100w. It’s really a matter of tone for me. I’ve extracted some pretty decent tone out of the thr5 recording directly to my pc with usb. My tonal influence is any of Yngwie’s stuff. Overdriven tube sound. Any input on which of those amps can get closer to that tone?
Man I wish someone would run a tube screamer and or maybe a distortion preamp pedal through one of these, always been curious.
Not sure if it's a good place, but I'm currently in Sweden and I'm selling one, the Wireless version, for 4200sek, it's barely used ;)
From where are you selling it?
@@Ertz01 I'm around Stockholm (Täby, more precisely)
@@ellaan75 Is there a way to message you privately? Probably better than filling Olas comment section and I'd rather not post my email here haha
@@espn1337 It's the wireless one, which is at 5000sek on Thomann :)
That’s a lot of seks
Hey Ola, I am just after a small at home unit...I was going to go Joyo Zombie XL 2, with a tiny orange speaker, EQ pedal and maybe a boost pedal also.
Or do you think the 30 version of this would tick the box instead?
Just wanting beefy chunky riffs at home low level (got two young kids now...I can’t turn it up to 11)
Just don’t want to buy a lemon.🙈😂
As much as I loved my THR10II I sold mine once I got an HX Stomp, I could never get the sound I wanted out of it and once I had the THR Remote App I would NOT stop tweaking and trying to see what speaker setup would work best. It just never could nail the distortion I was after.
HX Stomp is a good little unit. I use mine for low volume practice and with headphones at night. Doesn't replace my ENGL savage but it's convenient and relatively cheap for what it is.
What guitar is that? Love the color.
I don’t get the same sound when connecting my guitar. Did you have a distortion pedal inbetween?
It would be cool to see you do a 'Will it Chug' on the Spark Grid Amp you mentioned. I only found 1 tone/patch that doesn't sound like it's in a box. Metal GT. The rest of metal tones sound a bit muffled. Wonder what you'd come up with or create your own.
You should buy an EQ pedal (15$) to reduce the low end, and it'll sound perfect.
@@holtimt Couldn't find the one I think you're referring to for $15 but did find different one at Sweetwater for $19 & free shipping so I ordered one. Thanks!!
@@bobjohnson5218 Nice, it should considerably improve the tones. If ever you're still not satisfied, try putting a small amount of light packing foam in the bass port, never tried it myself but it worked for many others!
Hi Ola! Review the Positive Grip Spark please!
