No, no, no, you are wrong. all the causes that you spoke of were not the reason 7-11 failed in indonesia. They failed because they cannot matched the price of the similar products sold at indomaret and alfamart. For comparison, a bottle of 1.5L coca cola sold for Rp. 11,000,- (USD 0.75) at indomaret an alfamart, while 7-11 sold a bottle of 1.5L coca cola for Rp. 20.000,- (USD 1.36). And that pricing gap also applied to majority of their merchandise (except slurpees, indomaret and alfamart didn't have those in the past but they are catching on now). That explain why their sales were so low because who in their right mind would pay almost twice the price for the same stuffs you can get at indomaret or alfamart. Back in 2012, I shopped at 7-11 and when i saw their prices, well.... i knew they will go bankrupt soon.
The way this female narrator says "indomaret" really annoys me. What you said is true, dude. I shopped at 7-11 before they went bankrupt too, and noticed that huge price gap.
Can't believe they forgot to mention this part.. but they're right when they said our international regulation restricted them to spread their wings to other cities.

But if I want to hang out a lil bit, I went to 711. The problem is, for Indonesian, lifestyle is changing rapidly. Today it booming and tomorrow comes new popular things. So the main problem I think is because 711 just a lifestyle for us Indonesian. Except they open their store in an apartment!

Let me tell you why 7-11 failed : 1. More expensive than indo/alfa 2. Less outlet than indo/alfa 3. Less product variety than indo/alfa Ofcourse it was not succesful in indonesia
it's more like the local businesses know our mindset. We go shopping in Alfamart/Indomaret because they provide our basic utilities with massive sales (like buy 2 free 1 and such) weekly, at weekends, holidays, even at the end of the month. 7-11 is more like a cheap Starbucks where you can buy snacks, drinks and have wifi to hang out. There are 1 Indomaret, 3 Alfamart, and 1 Alfamidi (larger version of Alfamart) in 500m radius in front of my house. That's how crazy Alfamart and Indomaret in Indonesia
In Seoul, Korean convenience stores were just about 100 meters from each other... Around the place I used to stay, there are about 7-9 convenience stores within 200 meter radius.
I have visited several 7-Elevens several years agp ,and don't see anything special about it..........just selling general stuffs with higher prices than Indomaret and Alfamaret ......so it's logic that they loose competition in Indonesia....
Actually Circle K also sell product more expensive than Indomaret or Alfamart, but Circle K managed survive by open some store at area where there isn't Indomaret or Alfamart or area where the consumer aren't consider the price as huge issue. The main reason why 7 Eleven failed in Indonesia because miscalculations concept. Modern International tried to attract consumers with original concept (something that actually never tried/tested before by 7 Eleven in other countries) with positioning 7 Eleven as not just ordinary convenience store, but also as place for hangout. While these concept (for while in early years) successfully attract consumers and increased 7 Eleven popularity in Jakarta, the concept that was convinced by Modern International unexpectedly caused huge losses financial in future. (Modern International probably at the time didn't calcute effect of implementation their original concept, and until present never admit it was huge mistake) There were large amount consumers came only hangout at 7 Eleven for many hours only purchased few product. Sometime some 7 Eleven store crowded by people that went to hangout at 7 Eleven, as result created distrubing scenery for people which seriously went to 7 Eleven for shopping. Obviously it was huge disadvantaged for 7 Eleven.
In The Philippines,Alfamart was expanded since 2016 and now has 1000 branches nationwide mostly in Metro Manila and Calabarzon which is a dignified friendship between the Philippines and Indonesia

i think its not just because of indom*ret & alf*mart. 7*leven loses his opportunity in indonesia because: 1. incompetitive pricing (indonesian people is very sensitive with price tag) 2. it doesnt sell everything (ind*maret & alf*mart provide most of everything we need) 3. indonesian young people go to 7elev*n only to buy a cup of coffee and enjoy hours of its free WIFI. Then they get lunch on local food stall that give them more menu choice in very low price. They can get chicken rice with soup for less than one dollar for sure. 4. 7*leven cant meet governmental regulatory of convenient store.

If they enter indonesia by change their brand names such as “ Tuju-Sebelas” or “ Pusing-7keliling” 🤣🤣🤣 maybe indonesian will love it and think they were local brand 🤣
The final nail in the coffin for 7-Eleven in Indonesia was the ban of alcohol sales in convenience store. Also both Indomaret and Alfamart has Indomaret Point and Lawson which basically copied what 7-Eleven did One major factor that this video didn't mention is Indonesian 7-Eleven was operating more like a restaurant rather than a convenience store and therefore was being treated as a restaurant by the government. When the alcohol ban was imposed, they simply can't pay the higher restaurant tax 7-Eleven did revolutionize the industry in Indonesia however. They just can't fight with the big fish
Most people who visit Alfa/Indomaret are housewife/moms. They need daily necessities like detergent, cooking oils etc more than they need bread and a cup of coffee or even beer (lots of Indonesian don't drink alcohol anyway). There are a lot of products that 711 just never sell.
@array s well Indonesia do not sell beer anymore because most of it's citizens have islam as their religion (Reason being islam taught muslim that alcoholic drink is "haram" )

Because before they entered Indonesia, Indomaret and Aflamart had dominated the Indonesian market. And they are more senior. That's why Seven Eleven couldn't compete for long
This line of reasoning makes no sense, the fact that Seven Eleven can thrive in other countries when they tried to get in, means the old already established players play a role in stifling its growth but not the sole determining factor.
Because it's bussiness model isn't suited for Indonesia, they are expensive and you still hang out just by buying the cheapest item which is a soda drink for $1 Not only that they choose the most strategic location which increase the rent cost, and other costly things

Chains of international convenience stores had few chances outside Jabodetabek bro. The only chain that expands beyond Jabodetabek is Circle K. I have seen an outlet in Bali and Bandung once. Lawson has a store in Purwakarta (a toll road pitstop), but closes all outlets in Bandung. Govt actually does permit all chains to operate anywhere they want... But Indonesians think that international brand = expensive, elite while the price is actually the same. Cities and regencies outside Jabodetabek are resistant to Indomaret and Alfamart, even rural parts of Jabodetabek too. Before covid, none of these chains opened before 07.00 local time, to respect traditional market sellers. And when Indomaret and Alfamart are overrated in the capital, some cities perceived Indo and Alfa as middle class shop. There is one tier below like Indogrosir partner warung (mostly operated in Banten), provincial minimarkets (e.g. Yomart only operated in West Java), state owned (BUMN) shops like Pertamina's Bright, and unaffiliated shops designed as Indo/Alfa.
7-11 was nothing special, just free wi-fi. our local have more offers than 7-11 and with lower prices. to be honest, it's very difficult to compete with indomaret & alfamart in Indonesia.
I've been working in Bandung, Indonesia since 2010. On my way to work, I pass by no less than 8 Indomarets and 10+ AlfaMarts. And my route to work is only 6-7 miles. They are everywhere. Across the street from the exit/entrance gates to my neighborhood, there is a small AlfaMart, but I would rather go to a slightly bigger Indomaret which stands just 20 or so meters from it when I need munchies or beverages (and sometimes fruits). Less than 1 KM to the South from the gates, there's a big supermarket called Yogya, where I go grocery shopping every week. If you were to go around a corner after exiting Yogya's parking lot, you would see an Indomaret and a few meters from there, a K-Mart. Retail competition in Indonesia is really brutal. By the way, the 'ma' in 'Indomaret' is pronounced as in mama and the 'ret' as in return. For those who care, maret in Bahasa Indonesia means March (the month) in English. However, the company was established in December 1988, so the name has nothing to do with its date of establishment.
The maret word from indomaret is basically because its bit difficult for indonesian to pronounce mart (especially for them who wasn't familiar in english, so for easier spelling but without loosing its meaning, the word are spelled maret by the indomaret. It was a strategy for bussiness penetration in the small cities, country side, village, etc.
@@MrEndzo as an Indonesian, I would like to note that laws aren't the only reason that brought 711 down in Indonesia. 711 products are really expensive comparing to goods from Indomaret. The same thing probably cost 2 times as much in 711 and Indonesians are really sensitive with price tags. Our minimum wage is only $200 a month so we can't splurge on expensive goods because we have rent to pay. Indonesians are also already familiar with the Big 2 (Indomaret and Alfamart) so it is already a normal habit to go to either one of them, not 711. 711 failed to advertise why they are the best convenience store in the market so Indonesians just think that it's an expensive version of Indomaret and Alfamart (which it is)

I was a huge fan of 7/11 when it's still here in Indonesia. When the downfall started, I noticed 2 things: - The quality of the ads & in-store ads greatly declined. It started looking amateurish. They also came up with weird ideas like hotdog icecream. - The second reason was the price is too high. Compared to Indomaret or Alfamart, the prices can be up to 30% more for the same products, which is made worse by the fact that most of those convenience stores are usually very close to each other. I missed 7/11. Their chicken katsu were really good. Now there are no good convenience store brand chicken katsu 😂

Obviously it was huge disadvantaged for 7 Eleven.

i think its not just because of indom*ret & alf*mart. 7*leven loses his opportunity in indonesia because:
1. incompetitive pricing (indonesian people is very sensitive with price tag)
2. it doesnt sell everything (ind*maret & alf*mart provide most of everything we need)
3. indonesian young people go to 7elev*n only to buy a cup of coffee and enjoy hours of its free WIFI. Then they get lunch on local food stall that give them more menu choice in very low price. They can get chicken rice with soup for less than one dollar for sure.
4. 7*leven cant meet governmental regulatory of convenient store.

The final nail in the coffin for 7-Eleven in Indonesia was the ban of alcohol sales in convenience store.
Also both Indomaret and Alfamart has Indomaret Point and Lawson which basically copied what 7-Eleven did
One major factor that this video didn't mention is Indonesian 7-Eleven was operating more like a restaurant rather than a convenience store and therefore was being treated as a restaurant by the government. When the alcohol ban was imposed, they simply can't pay the higher restaurant tax
7-Eleven did revolutionize the industry in Indonesia however. They just can't fight with the big fish
More like "BIG WHALE", lawson, familymart from japan is more suitable than 711,
yup, Lawson's products are better than 7 eleven's
they banned alcohol for all store not just 711, and indomaret alfamart still standing strong without selling alcohol
So where do Indonesians (those wo can) buy cheap alcohol like beers from?
@@juch3 it's still available on supermarkets. Don't forget bars do exist here.
Most people who visit Alfa/Indomaret are housewife/moms. They need daily necessities like detergent, cooking oils etc more than they need bread and a cup of coffee or even beer (lots of Indonesian don't drink alcohol anyway). There are a lot of products that 711 just never sell.
Indonesia alim coy
"(lots of Indonesian don't drink alcohol anyway)"
weird flex but ok
@array s well Indonesia do not sell beer anymore because most of it's citizens have islam as their religion (Reason being islam taught muslim that alcoholic drink is "haram" )
neng_atcha boi I’m Indonesian and I keep coming to Indomaret after school, there’s not much to buy at Indomaret and alfamart to be honest. Most people come there for the snacks, lays sodas etc... there’s better and bigger markets for them like “Brastagi and stuff.”

Because before they entered Indonesia, Indomaret and Aflamart had dominated the Indonesian market. And they are more senior. That's why Seven Eleven couldn't compete for long

Wait the mintune, is this in Alun2?
Alun-Alun Bandung
The maret word from indomaret is basically because its bit difficult for indonesian to pronounce mart (especially for them who wasn't familiar in english, so for easier spelling but without loosing its meaning, the word are spelled maret by the indomaret. It was a strategy for bussiness penetration in the small cities, country side, village, etc.

There was a seven eleven here in Jakarta and guess what, that 7 11 place is now an alfamart, how's that for revenge
So sweet
the irony
Oof.. that's a punch to the nuts
I bet that's a pretty precise nutshot.
Goes to show even an international brand needs a local for local strategy
xingxing85 doesn't that happen almost everywhere?
It's only the law.
Indonesians are also already familiar with the Big 2 (Indomaret and Alfamart) so it is already a normal habit to go to either one of them, not 711. 711 failed to advertise why they are the best convenience store in the market so Indonesians just think that it's an expensive version of Indomaret and Alfamart (which it is)
@@MrEndzo Nah, It isn't just because the alcohol ban, They just don't have a competitive prices, people just prefer to go to Alfamart or Indomaret since they can grab the same things there with way lower prices than in 7-11
Yep, every 100 meters there is an alfamart and indomaret next door

Why should we wait and see a western mart, we have our own local mart 😂
7 eleven is not western

No no. Alcohol beverages only banned on Minimarket . Not supermarket
Not all. Some areas still sells them. Bali once tried to ban them but it got overruled. I know some mini marts sells alcohol but only if the customer is looking for it.

Cintailah ploduk2 Indonesia
I was a huge fan of 7/11 when it's still here in Indonesia. When the downfall started, I noticed 2 things:
- The quality of the ads & in-store ads greatly declined.
Honestly breads and lunchboxes in 7-Eleven were just mediocre. However, 7-Eleven rice balls were so good. I remember I often bought rice balls there before going to Taxation Course (Brevet) in Menteng
@@HonestFarmerLigue1Fan I disagree. The katsu curry rice was the bomb!
The only thing i miss is the chicken katsu too...
Prices are not actually an issue. We have Family Mart in Malaysia which is from Japan and it caters to the upper middle class. Call it a fancier 7Eleven that serves Latte and Bento 🍱 boxes. It's doing really well.
