I'm not American. But I really understand why USA is not fan of free market right now, especially towards China. It's because China chooses to be protectionistic. China runs a closed market system to protect the CCP's interests. Free market is an open market. So, there's a collision here. So far, USA has long obeyed China's rules and that has made USA suffer more debt.
China has 1.4 billion people to feed, while USA has only 340 million people. That's why communist China uses dirty tactics: firewall, espionage, IP theft, hacking, forced labor, sabotage, cheating, lying, using back doors and many more.
China is actually more dependent on USA economically, not the other way around.

Ironic, communist China a protectionistic country lectures other countries to not be protectionistic. Unfair.
      China's protectionism:
      1) Americans are not allowed to buy land in China. But, Chinese buy land in USA.
      2) Americans are not allowed to take over Chinese companies. But Chinese buy lots of American companies.
      3) China forces USA to use the front door in trade. USA obeys. But, when USA forces China to use the front door, China uses the back door.
      4) China often forces Americans to transfer technology secrets if Americans want to do business with China.
      5) China often forces Americans to set up factories in China instead of selling directly from USA. But, China chooses to sell goods directly from China to USA.
USA: China, are you protectionistic against me?
      China: Absolutely.

Mexico City has asked US corporations to source raw materials from within Mexico to manufacture in Mexico in conjunction with US manufacturing plants, to help US jobs stay in the US, this in order to curve Chinese imports. Mexico’s government policy towards trade with the US is that of complementation and not one of competition as recently stated by Mexico’s president Claudia Sheinbaum. The US will soon have a Japan style manufacturing powerhouse attached to its border. With geopolitical neutrality as a sovereign nation, Mexico will also be a financial safe haven like Switzerland.

It is in the United States' interest for Mexico to grow. If Mexico becomes a powerful country, the famous union of North America between Canada, the USA and Mexico (like the European Union) could take place, increasing the power of the subcontinent and ensuring that neither China nor any other country could surpass the USA (unless there are unions in Asia).
And on the subject of immigration, Canada and the USA could collaborate with Mexico to close the border between Mexico and Guatemala (and Belize).
