Exploration of the SCRAPPED Azjol-Nerub zone and its EVOLUTION to Live

- Today we explore the scrapped leveling zone of Azjol-Nerub and study how it has evolved from Warcraft 3 to the two 5-man dungeons we know from Wrath of the Lich King. Azjol-Nerub is a truly iconic place within the Warcraft universe, with unlimited potential. Did Blizzard really manage to capture all of it? Enjoy.

Coming back to this 7 years later after the announcement that a zone that is basically this zone is going into the game.... is crazy. I wish Hayven was here to do a video on it
in retrospect, I feel they could have used the entire A-N questing zone as a place for Death Knights to quest and level instead of going to Outlands. It would have been a good way to bridge the story gap left between the end of their starter zone and the beginning of the Northrend starter zones.
like a 58-60 zone, as Arthas actually fought with the Nerubians, it would make a lot of sense.
I believe it was a massive blunder on Blizz's part, forcing DKs to start off playinf through an expansion before the current content at the time. They rectified that mistake in Legion by letting Demon Hunters dive right into the expansion.
That would've been incredible
Holy shit you're right
They could do an entire expansion on this place...
+Rob Alle why not, it's implied, that it spreads all over the Northrend. They could make an Old Gods related expansion in there, maybe even make a vast system of caverns all over the Azeroth a'la Underdark
+30mmBallistic Google Spider Kingdom fan expansion. :)
+30mmBallistic
Actually originally there wasn't going to be a WOTLK. It at one point WAS the expansion.
+30mmBallistic He said it was suppose to be a zone. But at some point in the Blizzard Hype machine before Wrath's release, Blizzard mentioned it was suppose to be a very large zone that takes up space under most of the zones/parallel to those surface zones on the top, somewhere in the middle of Northrend.
Just stumbled upon that page. The amount of information is incredible. Blizzard should hire the people that put it together and actually make it a thing.
This would have been massive. Imagine designing that enormous zone and then having to fill it with quest hubs. I would have loved a faction of living Nerubians with their own reputation and an arthropod mount of some sort.
R.I.P Hayven.
I dont know much about the nerubian lore but i really hope they expand on this in a future expansion
For anyone coming here from hirumaredx's recent video, unfortunately, Hayven passed away from complications due to his cancer on March 18th, 2017. He was an absolute sweet heart, loved the lore, loved to explore, and loved this game so much.
Rest in Peace :(
Why are all your videos so good
+Hwn he sacrifices sheep to the blood god
+Someone I can neither confirm or deny that...
+Hayven Games 10/10
So I couldn't help but notice that a lot of your earlier videos are un-narrated. I just want to say that I am so glad you started to narrate. Your voice is wonderful and the music blends so well. It's like I am watching an actual documentary. Well done. Please keep narrating.
Philip Freda yes I began to narrate my videos in november last year because I wanted to start making content like the evolution series which needed narration. Today, the only videos I dont narrate (with only rare exceptions) are the How It REALLY Looks videos. Glad you like the voiced ones ^^
Wonderful work, sir. Looking forward for more
Well this one is one of the biggest reasons that Blizzard can't make the greater ideas happen anymore. Azjol Nerub could be contained the whole Northrend underworld. At least they could make it more than 2-wing instances. They could have spent more time with the spider kingdom rather than wasting time and affords on ToC.
Rest in Peace old friend
The Chronicle says that the Azj'Aqir Empire, Azjol-Nerub's precursor, stretched all across the Old Kalimdor, with cavernous tunnels all across the continent. Also, Azj'Aqir was founded by a C'Thraxxi named Kith'ix. Kith'ix's twin entity, Zakajz, was about to wake up at the beginning of Legion so I'd say it's likely Kith'ix might come back soon as well, buried under Zul'aman. What would his return bring? A possible Azj'Aqir expansion - a whole expansion building on the ideas and aesthetics of Azjol-Nerub.
Oh my that would be awesome. I hope they do something like this.
I doubt an expansion given that there is not a huge amount of story involved, there are two raids, a failed above ground zone, and that it would be all underground. But, an underground zone in legion would be interesting.
+Verroak Krasha I'm not sure it could make a whole expansion, the aesthetic is nice, but would you really want a whol expansion of it?
***** We had a whole expansion of snow (Northrend) and sunken islands (Broken Isles). I don't see why "underground" can't be differentiated into separate zones with disparate styles.
For example: 1. Rocky, 2. Mushrooms, 3. Old God stuff everywhere, 4. Aqir cities, 5. Nightborne/Nightfallen colony (the new drow from Legion), 6. Sunken caves.
The new format is great! I like the narration.
PS: You forgot a small part with some quests down a hole in Icecrown...
i got really excited when i got the notification for this video on my phone, and i was NOT disappointed! i love seeing this sort of hidden-content stuff - but i never would have guessed there was this much of Azjol-Nerub in the game files.
videos like this make me really glad to have subbed to this channel. thanks for all the great work!
Its a shame, it had great potential
Also I like the new format
My thoughts exactly. Would've been awesome to get some nerubian lore.
Why be surprised about so many new subscribers? Your content is top notch. Only second to your voice :)
Your production values are so quality. I love it. ♥
Your videos deserve a lot more views. Great work, keep it up.
You've outdone yourself this time Hayven. This is an absolutely amazing video!
Viewer 5000, like number 500 ;)
Great Video once again and thanks for showing this off. I am happy for you that your channel does so well and thank you for doing this kind of work intensive videos for our little group of fans.
I hope you will have no trouble with your disease and hopefully you will have a long time to go, you do this amazing and with such love for the details :)
R.I.P.
Coming back from work and watching your videos is a true blessing ;D
Holy shit I havent watched any videos from you lately so I dont know when you started doing these evolution of the zones kind of videos but i freaking love it. So interesting, really well made video! good job and keep it up!
+IprenKills thanks, I launched these evolution series this year and got material for plenty of them so they wont stop anytime soon :) I'm glad they are received well
I absolutly love your videos. In a comprehendable way you explain the WoW world. Evry time I learn something new and really interesting.
I was always curious what this area looked like =) Thank you!
Superb. Please never stop making this videos.
This channel is comparitively unloved despite its sheer quality and deserves all the subs
I discovered your channel in the last few months and the overall quality is really getting better ! Keep going on the good work and strenght for your cure !
Also, the sudden arrival of subscribers are most likely coming from Kungen, I'm not one of the new but I'm very happy that he promoted your work since you deserve more for what amazing content you're providing ! Thank you ! :D
The concept for Azjol-Nerub is one of the most unique in WoW in my opinion. The zone always had this different feel to it that was hard to explain (similar to the first experience when you enter the Ahn Qiraj tunnels but in a different way).
Thank you for this video. I had no idea so much was already fleshed out besides the 2 dungeons we got!
you deserve all of your new subs. great content :)
Your content is really good ! and Kungen mentioned your channel on his stream thats why so many new subs ! Grats !
Dude you deserve so many more subs, your content is always so well thought out and interesting not to mention well put together its amazing i always look forward to your videos, it must take you a long time to do one video judging by the quality and content looking forward to the next one :)
really love your vids man!
God the lvl of quality of this video is awesome good job.
Amazing as always
Another Hayven Video, another press on the like button.
It looks great as a lvling zone.. its a shame.
btw i like the new format, it feels like you're improving with every video! keep up the great work
your videos are great. keep the work up :)
Rest in Peace Hayven
great vid as always. :)
New favorite channel!
hey Hayven, thanks for the nice video clips all along! Wish you all the best in your medical treatment! And get well soon:D
+Mang Hong Calvin Leung thank you!
great video again Hayven:)
I really miss your videos, these were always so interesting. Rest in Peace, Hayven
Thank you SO MUCH for all you videos! On this one we can only dream if ther's still remnants of dwarfs, the dark ones, and so many horros. Trutly beautiful!
I seriously love these videos. Awesome insight into how zones and dungeons are made so cool I would have liked to have seen it as a zone i think maybe as a lvl 80 questing zone like timeless isle or isle of quel'danas would have been a cool story if we were trying to prevent the lich king from ressurecting anub'arak and failing only to defeat him again in ToGC
I love the way you say Azjol-Nerub
Did you miss the little zone under ICC (which is part of the Arthas-questline) on porpose? Thought it was worth to mention that Azjol-Nerub even stretches til Icecrown.
amazing video once again
i really love the camera driven parts
Blackreach in Skyrim was quite cleary based on the Azjol'nerub concept.
I agree.
Definitely!
It was actually based on Moria from the Lord of the Rings.
Doubt that, just because it's an underground city doesn't mean it was based on another underground city... Plenty of that in fantasy lore. It was probably more inspired by LOTR or D&D.
I seem to recall mentions that it was technical and practical limitations that scrapped Azjol-Nerub as a zone, and that Deepholm was partially created to see try and see if they could work their way through those limitations in a more contained area
I'd rather have a leveling zone then the dungeons. To see such a scale of the zone. And to think you could fly through random holes leading to the other zones. And think of the hidden subterranean levels they could have made. They could have put five. In the middle, the missing Tolvir of Northrend. And at the bottom, an old god. Congrats dude for 20 thousand subs. Way to go dude :)
Great video.
New Logo? Nice...and great vid as always :-) btw... I believe, that we see part of Azjol-Nerub under the ICC (part of the questline with Arthas' Heart)
I love your videaos!!! especialy when you are talking and Vocing the videos.
There was also a quest that had you find the heart of Arthas beneath Icecrown citadel (I always used to say it's Arthas' toilets' "septic tank"). It had some Nerubian architecture and Faceless Ones.
Good job like always, awesome editing and nice theme song in the end, really dig it.
As for the the whole Azjol-Nerub I'd rather see it as a leveling zone myself. I missed Wrath completely, but did the dungeons in WoD and kinda disliked them, they felt more like a straightforward maze. On the other hand Deepholme was quite awesome and immersive.
Still nothing beats Feralas and Ashenvale back in 2004 when it was first released for me though :)
Nice video! I personally would have loved an underground zone for the Nerubians. It would have been interesting to see what would happen as players delve deeper and potentially closer to Uldaman where Yogg-saron is/was. Maybe the old god would have made an appearance in toying with players - perhaps an insanity debuff the longer you are underground... A lot of potential - Hopefully they'll go back and work on this content one day. Content doesn't always have to be about end-game!
amazing video.. thank u i love your history episodes.. hopefully one day I can talk about the evolution of silithus always find that zone interesting and would love to see Anything cut or changed from alpha... and the cut gnome gnomergon would be cool to see if they did anything before they turned it to an instance
So glad I found this channel. +1 sub
He forgot to mention that there is another appearance of AN right below icecrown citadel, I was stunned when i first fell down there. Also a cool questline which includes the heart of Arthas.
Im a sucker for these kind of underground worlds, this along the Wailing Caverns, Uldaman, Maraudon and the Underot are some of my favorite places in the game
Oh god, i just discovered your channel and this series... its addicting like crack.
I could so get behind this whole zone being a full expansion.
I really enjoy your Videos.. not only once but as much as i can each day - Really glad to see Videos of Scrapped Content, Alpha-Content, Secrets, "how it Really looks" and much more, bcuz i find these themes interesting and really enjoy them.
Really sad, that they scrapped Azjol as a Zone and made Dungeons out of it.. tons of potential just thrown out of a window :/
You can see parts of Azjol-Nerub in an area below ICC as well, where there are Faceless ones, and in the water is Arthas' heart.
@Hayven Games
If you enjoyed this you might also enjoy the zone in Skyrim called "Blackreach".
He'd probs agree with you, from heaven. :c Hayven passed away from cancer 2 years ago :c
Since you brought up Thal'Dranath it looks like it's been turned into the out-door dungeon on Legion Alpha and you can go there outside of the instance for questing I think.
nice video!!
Goodness! Stay healthy. 🔊🔊
I suppose we got Deepholm an expansion later to sate that "huge, underground zone" thirst, but it's still a shame we missed out on this. It did make for some sweet looking dungeons.
Wow... would love to be able to run around this place
What I noticed is that the map that you show at 6:10 is exactly the same as when you open the emerald dream in a map editor. However if you explore the emerald dream in a private server you'll see that all of the ground textures are fully green so you won't see the resemblence
How do you visit these scrapped areas? Do you have (or could you please make) a tutorial or something to show how you do it?
I love Ahn'Kahet, it's one of my favorite instances. I really wish we could see what it would have been as a zone.
+Hayven Games You always make quality videos, I like them very much. Keep it up. ;)
04:51 "This is my life now."
After checking out suramar, theres this one place in the zone called Falanaar (?) and its mostly underground with tunnels and shit which kinda reminds me of this place.
imagine this zone on the big screen...chills
I came back to this video after the new WoW announcement. It looks like they refurbished Nerubian stuff into a full zone after all. I just wish Hayven were here to see it. It would have made him happy.
Maybe one day we'll get an expansion here. But they would really have to mix up the environments to keep it fresh. Lots of huge open caves like deepholm with lakes, light shining down from above, vegetation and stuff. Blizz's art team is so great I've no doubt they could pull it off
Hey Hayven! This video has got me thinking... Do you think we could see some action in Azjol Nerub as part of an Old Gods expansion? There's so much scope in this zone that I wish they'd take advantage of!
Love your videos man , keep them coming !
it's a pity that they didnt add a full zone , it would be superb questing there , the map you showed us indeed looks similar to deepholm and grats on 20k subs!
Somehow Blizzard always leave the best things unfinished.
Need that leveling zone!
The thing is that the Anub'Arak are just a branch of silithids like the ones in Tanaris or Silithus, and I am pretty sure that lorewise they are said to be found under all continents. With this in mind, I believe that there is a possibility we will see some sort of nerubian or silithid underground kingdom like this in the future.
Pretty sure I could listen to you talk all day long... Keep up the great work!
This Zone would have been awesome. I spent so many hours exploring Dwemer Ruins and their underground zones in Skyrim.
You could pretty nicely do an Old Gods expansion similar to Cata in terms of having to go around but more finally facing off against the Old Gods rather than Deathwing... e.g. Ahn-Qiraj, Azjol-Nerub, Nyalotha, Azshara's kingdom and a return to Pandaria for Yogg-Saron perhaps
When you feel up to it could you do a video on the dire maul instances. I know to move between the individual wings you need to leave the instance but are they actually connected, or are they individual instances.
WotLK had so many wonderful ideas that never saw the light of day. I wonder if we'll ever get to see the full potential of Azjol-Nerub realized. After all there must always be a Lich King, so it's always possible for the Scourge to rise again.
Never stop making content.
Well, they've hinted at future plans with Bolvar as Lich King, hopefully revisiting that part of the world would mean opening up more of the area to the game.
May I suggest u have a look around AQ40 - from within the instance, or whats behind it, pre Cata
I didn't know the instances were the result of a scrapped zone. Very nice video.
It's hard to say.... On one hand I'm sad I didn't get to see the zone. On other, I hate caves. I bet it would have been a huge pain to navigate judging by the map. Then again, Deepholm is basically a cave and I think it's a neat area. Lore wise, I didn't know what the point of the dungeons were. A zone would have the story of the kingdom better justice.
I'm almost certain we'll revisit Northrend in some form later on, probably when we have to fight the new Lich King or some other threat. When we do, I'm sure they'll work on this some more.
I'd love to see this place make a return as a patch zone.
This is why +Blizzard adding this and other cut content, when they 'evolve' the new vanilla servers, would be fantabulous, feel do I.
There was a part of Icecrown that dropped you into Azjol-Nerub, but it was not for long... like 2-3 quests.
Even after all of these years, your videos are still some of my favorite. RIP to a true legend.
I will hold my hopes up for a second lich king xpack and that we will be having this zone then!
