I've been a fan of Pink Floyd since I was 11 years old, in 1979, when I received this album on vinyl for Christmas. Like most Floyd albums, 'The Wall' tells a story, with each song being a scene. Once you check out the songs individually, listen to the entire album, from start to finish, in one go. A comfortable place to recline, dim lighting, and maybe something to drink. Just close your eyes, and let the music take you on a roller-coaster.
Pink Floyd's music is in a class of it's own. But they designed their albums to be listened to as an album, not as singles. They hated the radio music industry and the way people had to create short catchy songs for the radio. They created experiences that took whole albums to express. Their live shows went on for hours and they would stretch songs for two or three times longer than most other performers. As it's been mentioned, lights down low, all distractions put away, turn the phones off and listen to the album from beginning to end.
Exactly. Reaction channel fans need to prep their fave reactors when it comes to a lot, Floyd being one; this is just a chapter in a book, a song from a concept album, only one piece of a much bigger puzzle.
Guys this is from the album "The Wall" which is the story of the life of fictional character "Pink" a rock guitarist. If you really want to get your brain around just how deep and dark it is then you need to do the entire album! (I know that's a really big deal for reaction but it would be very worth it! 😉)
Really wish reactors would do the whole album, then the movie. I know one reactor did the whole album and right before they were gonna do the movie, all of the album vids got copy-write striked!
Exactly. You can't analyze the meaning of any individual track from "The Wall" without knowing the context, which can only be gained from having heard the entire album. Actually, I'm still waiting to see _anyone's_ reaction to the track "In The Flesh" (the reprise, not the opening track "In The Flesh?"), especially if they haven't heard the rest of the album. References to people as things like "queers" and "coons" would no doubt throw most people off (especially in this day and age) without realizing it is "Pink's" drug-induced hallucination of him being a fascist dictator.
@@dtaylor77 I know a part of Pink Floyd didn't like the movie. But I don't care. The movie was awesome sauce and there is nothing anyone can say that will change my mind. The imagery in it was terrific. From the vacuum to the bottle being poured out it was spectacular.
A lot of Pink Floyd's music is very dark, and they often are referring to mental illness in their lyrics. They lost a fundamental band member, Syd Barrett, to schizophrenia. It was a very sad decline in such a young man and they paid homage to his genius in some of their songs. "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" is another one. 💜💚💛✌️
Syd Barrett permafried his brain from taking too much acid too much as a young man. He suffered for the rest of his life because of it. It happened to me too unfortunately :/ Taking hallucinogens before your brain fully develops at 25 can, if you f up can do permanent damage. It’s real and I feel it every waking moment I’m awake and asleep. I don’t wish it upon anyone. Be careful everybody.
And never understanding how a side one and side two to a record has to be played from start to finish. That's why when I taped the entire Wall Album on Chromium Oxide casette tape every track blends into the other track and I'll give up on skipping to the favorite tracks because the inter tracks tell this rock opera story.
To understand songs from The Wall, you have to listen to the whole album. In this song, the main character has built a psychological wall to protect himself from all the things that have hurt him. But now he’s trying to reconnect with humanity.
Pink Floyd is an English rock band formed in London in 1964. They became a leading band of the progressive rock genre. They are one of the best-selling music artists of all time. "Wish You Were Here", "The Dark Side Of The Moon" & "The Wall" are among the best-selling albums of all time. They have a huge library of music. Some of their big hits were "See Emily Play", "Money", "Another Brick In The Wall, Part 2", "Not Now John", "On The Turning Away" & "High Hopes".
Pink Floyd is best understood by listening to the entire album from start to finish. Its almost like an opera. One song blends into the next and so on as the story carries on. Remember the song 'Mother'? She helped him build the wall around himself. Then he asks, "did it have to be so high?"
i was lucky enough to have come into awareness in the time rock and roll first took off in America , the Beatles brought it to America although we had a few groups here already but with the Beatles it became a Sunami , i witnessed the birth of all the rock bands and have to say pink was my favorite , almost all their songs are about the common man , his dreams and aspirations vs the establishment who wanted and needed to mold the individual for their purposes , it's about the struggle of the individual vs the state , love to watch younger people rediscovering their music and trying to figure it out for themselves ,they always had a deep personal message interwoven in some kick ass music - we called it head music in the day , carry on the flame of individual liberty , don't let it go out or we're all done .
the song is about how although people put up their "Wall" to keep people out, they desperately but hopelessly long for real human interaction. Now that's the lyrics sorted; but real reason we are here for the guitar. definitely top ten of all time
You two have to watch the whole Pink Floyd live Pulse Concert from 1994 ! I'm 62 years old and have been to many, many concerts but this was one of the best ever! Foxboro MA, 1994 ! Also Led Zeppelin live in MSG, 1973 and any live Jethro Tull !
On your previous Pink Floyd reaction, I suggested their song Great Gig In The Sky. If you get a chance give it a listen. There is a girl named Clare Torry. She handles the vocals. The band asked her to just go into the studio & improvise something. She had no idea what they wanted, but when they heard what she came up with everybody knew it was something pretty special. It is truly unique, I think you will agree.
Like being locked away in your mind begging for help, but not getting a response because of the wall built up in your head where they can neither see or hear you and you can't see or hear them. Only by breaking down those defenses will you stand united, not fall divided. There is always hope. Nice reaction Asia and BJ ❤️
Many in the comments section say it and I feel it also, Pink Floyd is one of the few that write albums, not songs, and the album needs to be listened to as a whole. Like a casserole, the individual parts may be tasty but the whole dish is what you remember.
From the album "The Wall" which is a themed storyline of a Rock star struggling with fame, drugs, childhood development, mental illness, relationships. The theme is about the walls he builds around himself. Semi autobiographical, most songs were written by Pink Floyd member Roger Waters. A follow-up movie was made based around the songs. Other songs like "Mother" and "Comfortably Numb" and "Brick in the Wall" all from this album. Deep stuff ✌️
One of the best concerts I’ve ever been to was Pink Floyd Animals tour in 1977/78 Madison Square Garden. The best was Led Zeppelin’s 3 hour plus, 7 night stand in ‘77 at the same place in NYC. Epic!
BJ got it. "It's almost as if he is saying is there anybody out there?" The song before this one on the album is LITERALLY called Is There Anybody Out There?
So many comments about listening to the entire album...so true! Pink Floyd albums are concept albums, made to be listened to from beginning to end...they tell a story...please, do yourselves a favor, someday, when you can make time and give it a try, even if you're not doing a reaction video...you won't regret it!
My friend who lived next door had an older sister who had the DSOTM album and her parents were strict baptists so she kept the album at my house. 1973, I was 13,PF fan forever after.
My husband is a Chiropractor. He often plays Pink Floyd in the office and our patients will come out and say, “ not sure if it’s the adjustment or hearing Pink Floyd but I feel high 😂. I’ve been since I was 17. I’m now 51 😊
To me ,the the most powerful line in the song , " Don't help them to bury the light ." Our problem is that there are too many out there who are trying to bury the light . The light of equal rights , equal justice and human dignity . If we stand united , we have a chance of stopping them. We must show them they are their own worst enemy.
Important to watch the movie 'The Wall' to put these songs in context..especially comfortably numb...explains Pink and the whole meaning of what the 'wall' was..especially enjoyed with homemade cigarettes!! 😋
Basically the song is about even though people put up their “walls” of isolation and loneliness they are also longing for companionship and understanding.
Great band worth a deep dive. They are getting on in years and at least one has died. i mention this because there is a great tribute band that comes as close as anyone can to the Pink Floyd experience. Brit Floyd. I have David Gilmour live with "Run Like Hell" 2016
It's all about the wall. The album is called Pink Floyd The Wall. Every song in the album The Wall gives you a glimpse of what the wall is made of. We all have our own walls in one way or another.
I forgot,.... you guys both enjoy David Gilmours guitar solos, I know BJ has mentioned it, and so has Asia, with "Comfortably Numb", "Time" and now this song, "Hey You". You would really enjoy Pink Floyds live version of "Sorrow" from their 1994 Pulse Concert, Gilmours guitar work in that version of the song is off the charts! I'm sure you both would love that song!
Pink Floyd will become one of your favorite and most respected bands for doing profound and captivating music that has you enter their 'zone' when you listen to their songs. They are unlike any other band and are their own genre. To fully understand this song and what the Wall is all about, at some point set aside some 'us' time and listen to the entire album and then, when you have a chance, watch the movie of the Wall. It is quite a journey listening to many of their albums in their entirety. Also try Echoes, both the studio version first then the 2 part Echoes: Live at Pompeii version to start to come to grips with the magnitude that is their musical output that these guys gave the world, now and for centuries to come. Enjoy! 🎵
By the time Pink Floyd gets to this song during The Wall Live concerts of 1980, they are completely separated from the audience by a 35 ft high wall that extends the entire width of the auditorium. They perform this song from behind the wall.
Pink Floyd, especially this album and Rush 2112 side 1 are a song after song listen to really connect the storyline and fellings. I'd LOVE to hear some Rush reactions!
Pink Floyd does concept albums. Best listen to from start to end. (Always wear headphones when experiencing Pink Floyd.) They tell a story as each song leads into the next song. Albums like, "Animals", "Dark Side Of The Moon" & "The Wall." ✌️
That song is from The Wall album and the theme is about the wall we build and isolate ourselves. The songs that have the two perspectives have two singers, Roger Waters and David Gilmour. You guys have to check out the song "Dogs" from the Animals album, there's so much to unpack from it. Love the reactions you guys are great.
here something bout this song: Hey You marks a key moment on the album: in the previous track, Goodbye Cruel World, Pink has completed his wall and completely sealed himself off from the outside world. Now, however, he begins to wonder if the wall was really a good idea, because he finds that he can't see or hear anything through the wall. He tries to tear it down, but the attempt fails. Pink has to realize that he no longer has any contact with other people and begins to despair.
my favorite reactors! Floyd was one of those bands who created albums not songs. Although any one song can be enjoyed on it's own...they were designed to be listened to together. Take an hour or two to experience Animals cover to cover, start to finish. It will be your most epic and meaningful reaction!
great reaction, but as stated by Phil Shorten you really need to listen to the album in order as it was on the original vinyl LP , it is what we use to call a concept album with a central theme that all the songs relate to .In this case, the main character Pink builds a wall around himself emotionally isolating himself from the world as the album progresses from his childhood (with a overbearing overprotective mother) to a trial of himself at the end . when the band went on tour they actually build a wall bit by bit as they performed the album ,and blow it up at the end just like in the song on the album. Pink Floyd is the Blues on Acid ,nobody else sounds like them , or ever will , just like my other favorite band Rush , often imitated but never duplicated . Enjoy the ride and we will keep watching .
David Gilmore played notes at times that only dogs and angels could hear. Seriously though the man is and was a great guitarist and singer, watch the live concert at Pompeii Italy, mind blowing.
My thought about this song is that he is talking to himself - asking for help then offering help. The album The Wall is an autobiography of the life of the lead singer/songwriter, Roger Waters. He struggles growing up without his father who was killed in WWII when Roger was very young. He had an overbearing and protective mother who helped him put up the mental 'WALL' around him to protect him but it ultimately causes him to go insane as an adult rock star. I believe you did Comfortably Numb already. At that point in his life he is a grown rock star and has turned to drugs to help him deal with his troubles. Its unbelievable how he and the band made this autobiography into a double album and movie. The songs individually can be hard to understand without the full context of the album. Hope this helps to understand the genius that is Pink Floyd. Peace and thank you for the reaction! ✌🏼✌🏼
This is a concept album, meaning that in order to fully understand a single track, the entire album must be listened to. It is recommended to also watch the accompanying film. The album (which contains this song) serves as the soundtrack . "The wall" is an autobiography of Roger Waters, the singer, where he speaks about himself
Hey you is part of the concept album The Wall which was a movie also, so the lyrics are linked to those of the other songs of the whole album and the plot of the movie.
Hey guys, great choice. And Asia, you're closer to understanding The Wall than you realize. But guys, everybody makes the mistake of trying to understand a whole composition (rock opera), by just one chapter. Please consider everybody else's suggestion of treating The Wall as a complete, evolving story. When it clicks on you how every song is connected to the next, your appreciation of Pink Floyd as storytellers will likely skyrocket! ☮️✌️🕊️
if you would react to the entire album/movie, i would watch. the story needs be experienced as a whole. by the way, im waitiing for the next tool. enjoy the journey guys!
many people don't know the true story behind Pink Floyd and really why they created the music the way they did. Go, check their story out, you'll might be in tears by the end of it, but you'll understand the lyrics, sound, and the band in more depth and really appreciate their music in a different way which is why their concerts are incredible as AC/DC.
This is my favorite song from the album The Wall... but to get it you need the context. I'm not the first to say this, but listen to the whole album. Seriously, find a version that plays through with no breaks... the songs transition so beautifully together. For other Floyd songs, Wish You Were Here and Learning to Fly are my favorite songs of this band. See Emily Play is fun, too
It important to note that the two verses were sang by two different dudes. First verse was Gilmour, second was Waters i think Gilmour was voicing a lonely person who has discovered that there are many lonely people. And he was imagining another one like him, coming to him and sort of rescuing each other...but, he was sort of too cowardly to break out of what he is to go find them. But, as we see with Roger Waters' part he sang, it didnt happen because (at least, not yet) the lonely people like him are waiting for the same thing and cant climb out of the depressive and oppressive wall that they helped life build around themselves. But, in Roger's verse, it seems like he is having realizations that may break him out....as the song ends with "dont tell me theres no hope at all; together we stand , divided we fall." I think this song speaks to that part in all of us. Some of us have been there more than others, but having nobody is equally as terrifying as it is untrue. We are in this together and if one of us realizes this, we will all slowly start to realize it. But, what do i Know, I am only human...like you.
You have to remember all PF songs are part of an album collection of songs which are covering a theme a concept Album, They are connected and tell parts of a story often,,
It’s sad to say (maybe) that we call this music a trip, but honestly we all used to trip t this back in the day, before weird drugs got into our world. We did the simple god stuff in the 80’s. LSD was so pure back then. One little square and Pink Floyd was a solid Saturday night.
What I like about this song is David Gilmore sings first part and Roger Waters sings 2nd part. Like a wall between them. Waters wrote the song and he is very political. Together we stand Divided we fall!
The singer has built a mental wall around himself. He fantasizes that someone (possibly his ex-wife) reaching out to him. But by this point in the album he has gone insane, or "worms in his brain". Please react to the whole Wall album in order. You will love it!
I love how, when it gets to the part where there worms are eating into his brain, the engineers found swirling combinations of high pitched boring, needling sounds that, with excellent loudspeakers, or great headphones, *feels* like having worms eat into your brains.
RANDY IN KC MO. I WAS BORN IN 1964 WHEN I WAS 10 YEARS OLD MY LIFE CHANGED AFTER HEARING PINK FLOYD WHAT YOU NEED TO PULL UP IS THE THE WALL THE MOIVE THIS WILL SHOW YOU THE REAL PINK FLOYD YOU GUYS ARE COOL IN MY BOOK
This is just one song of many from The Wall album that tells the story of The Wall. It's the story of Pink, a Rock star that has issues with his life and his fans, he had an isolated childhood with an overbearing mother, (see "Mother" from The Wall), abusive teachers, (see "Another Brick In The Wall", drug issues, a lonely upbringing, and other social issues too. He builds a metaphorical Wall to try to separate him from his audience. There's much more to the story, but here is not the venue to go into it all. I'll say this though, at The Wall concert, an actual wall is being built as the concert progresses on, at the end of the Show you hear the chants "Tear Down The Wall" over and over. Before too long The Wall is literally torn down and destroyed right in front of the audience. It was the most incredible Concert, Show, Play, Rock Opera performance I've ever seen!
Pink Floyd is my best friend and brother Frank Shimer's favorite band, we sadly lost Frank to ALS last Thanksgiving night, Rest in peace Frank, love you and miss you Bro.

If you ever have an opportunity, go see Roger Waters live in concert. Incredible show. Also, watch the concert , The Wall, at the Berlin Wall.
One of the greatest bands ever, thanks for giving them a listen.
Pink Floyd was the most innovative and creative band ever!
The the turning away live amazing song solo
High hopes amazing solo from classic accustic he switches to slide guitar both best live
Blessed to have been old enough to experience 'The Wall' tour in '80 and the 'Pulse' tour in '95..favorite band of all time..
If you play it backwards you can hear LETS GO BRANDON 🤣
here something bout this song: Hey You marks a key moment on the album: in the previous track, Goodbye Cruel World, Pink has completed his wall and completely sealed himself off from the outside world. Now, however, he begins to wonder if the wall was really a good idea, because he finds that he can't see or hear anything through the wall. He tries to tear it down, but the attempt fails. Pink has to realize that he no longer has any contact with other people and begins to despair.
The album Animals, Dogs, Sheep, Pigs. Great lyrics in the song Dogs, and the guitar playing is something else.
my favorite reactors! Floyd was one of those bands who created albums not songs. Although any one song can be enjoyed on it's own...they were designed to be listened to together. Take an hour or two to experience Animals cover to cover, start to finish. It will be your most epic and meaningful reaction!
Great reaction! Asia, you have the face of an angel, super model and A list actor! Not being creepy just stating the very obvious!❤️❤️❤️😁
As stated before…..you’re seeing one little snapshot of a grand story.
To truly appreciate it….listen to the ent album start to finish in one shot.
High hopes by Pink Floyd 1994 live version
Listening to Pink Floyd is an experience. So many to listen to. More Pink Floyd please! I love your reactions!
great reaction, but as stated by Phil Shorten you really need to listen to the album in order as it was on the original vinyl LP , it is what we use to call a concept album with a central theme that all the songs relate to .In this case, the main character Pink builds a wall around himself emotionally isolating himself from the world as the album progresses from his childhood (with a overbearing overprotective mother) to a trial of himself at the end . when the band went on tour they actually build a wall bit by bit as they performed the album ,and blow it up at the end just like in the song on the album.
If you watch the Pompeii video, get the director's cut. More content, and WELL worth it!
Pink Floyd- Comfortably Numb at Pulse concert. Epic.
Tool was influenced by Pink Floyd to the point that one of their tracks sounds a lot like a 1968 Pink Floyd song.
Hey you is part of the concept album The Wall which was a movie also, so the lyrics are linked to those of the other songs of the whole album and the plot of the movie.
The Wall was released a couple weeks before my 19th birthday in 1979. It has been a part of my life ever since.
You need to listen to the whole album and check out the movie. Also anything from their album Animals is amazing.
Pink Floyd songs are great on their own. Yet their Albums are concept albums where all the songs go together and tell a story when listened together.
Remember to always have lyrics on when listening to Pink Floyd
There was nothing like Pink Floyd live in concert, it will shake you to your core
if you would react to the entire album/movie, i would watch. the story needs be experienced as a whole. by the way, im waitiing for the next tool. enjoy the journey guys!
many people don't know the true story behind Pink Floyd and really why they created the music the way they did.
See Emily Play is fun, too
When you have 17 min , React to Pink Floyd - Dogs ( with lyric ) or Pink Floyd - Coming back to life ( live Pulse 1994 ) 😎👍
they were a fresh sound when i first heard them different from anything on the radio .
It important to note that the two verses were sang by two different dudes. First verse was Gilmour, second was Waters
i think Gilmour was voicing a lonely person who has discovered that there are many lonely people.
But, in Roger's verse, it seems like he is having realizations that may break him out....as the song ends with "dont tell me theres no hope at all; together we stand , divided we fall."
I think this song speaks to that part in all of us. Some of us have been there more than others, but having nobody is equally as terrifying as it is untrue. We are in this together and if one of us realizes this, we will all slowly start to realize it.
But, what do i Know, I am only human...like you.
Pink Floyd is a musical journey through theseventys sit back enough the ride see you when the ride is over
Listening to this album in its entirety will definitely give this song the context to understand
This is called a concept album. The best ever.
Great reactions to the both of you, one of my all-time favorite songs, thanks 🤘
You have to remember all PF songs are part of an album collection of songs which are covering a theme a concept Album, They are connected and tell parts of a story often,,
It’s sad to say (maybe) that we call this music a trip, but honestly we all used to trip t this back in the day, before weird drugs got into our world. We did the simple god stuff in the 80’s. LSD was so pure back then. One little square and Pink Floyd was a solid Saturday night.
Love your choices and the channel. Thanks to both of you, for the deep dive you bring us. Very cool 😎
This is from the album The Wall. Each song is part of a big concept.
You will love it!
in high school to get high put the black lights on with the posters on the wall and pink floyd playing was a trip of its own
I love how, when it gets to the part where there worms are eating into his brain, the engineers found swirling combinations of high pitched boring, needling sounds that, with excellent loudspeakers, or great headphones, *feels* like having worms eat into your brains.
Give yourselves a big treat and watch the movie of The Wall. All of these great songs, in context, are even more powerful.
This song is about the isolation the character, Pink, felt in The Wall album. You need to listen the album as a whole to hear the whole story.
Pink Floyd is my best friend and brother Frank Shimer's favorite band, we sadly lost Frank to ALS last Thanksgiving night, Rest in peace Frank, love you and miss you Bro.
They write conceptual albums!
