This song is just part of the entire story told on the Wall album. Its all about the mental wall he has built around him self to protect his own psyche from the stardom, failed relationships, drug abuse, mother and father issues, cruelty of the schools and social structure, etc etc. You really have to hear the album from beginning to end to understand all the songs on it. This album really is a masterpiece.

Hi Lilly. This is a song from The Wall album. It is meant to be listened to in its entirety from the first track until the last song. It tells a story of a man from infancy to finalization (the end of his sovereignty.) It is 2 records worth of songs, so if you start, you will be listening for approx. 1 1/2 hours... enjoy.

When Nick Mason's "Pink Floyd: Their Mortal Remains" exhibit was in Los Angeles, there was a video with an interview with Roger Waters where he talks about this song. Its a reflection on Waters during the "Animals" period where he was aliening himself from society "Standing in the aisles with itchy feet and fading smiles". After the incident in Toronto where he spat on one of the concert goers, he started realizing he was wrong and tries to "reconnect" with his listeners "With your ear against the wall waiting for someone to call out". But, he found that he had isolated himself so much that he was finding it impossible to do "The wall was too high, as you can see. No matter how he tried, he could not break free". He starts asking his listeners to forgive him "Out there beyond the wall, breaking bottles in the hall. Can you help me?". He tells his listener's this isn't just my problem. Unless you are willing to listen to my music and pay attention to the meaning, rather than use it just to party to, I may stop making music altogether "Don't tell me there's no hope at all. Together we stand. Divided we fall". I'm not a real big fan of the man's politics or his bass playing (most of what you hear is actually David Gilmour on a Fender fretless Jazz bass). But, you have to give credit where credit is due. The man can string words together in such a way that, no matter what, you can apply it to something in your life.

Thanks for your love of music. I appreciate your journey as you discover new artists and enjoy your insights. As others have said, this song is best interpreted in the context of the album The Wall, which was a concept album dealing with social and personal pressures and emotional isolation. In this song, the narrator has built up a mental and emotional wall for self-protection from harsh reality and is crying out for intimacy and human empathy

As for songs with great lyrical content from Pink Floyd, I would recommend "Time/Breathe (reprise)" from their Dark Side of the Moon album. It is a wonderfully grim philosophical song whise interpretation holds up when heard indivudually despite that album also being somewhat of a concept album

Pink Floyd's most lyrical songs are on the album: Dark Side of the Moon.
Not necessarily for the number of words, but for the depth of the message they convey.
1- (Time/Breathe Reprise), they are inseparable.
    2 - (Us And Them).
3 - (Brain Damage and Eclipse), they are inseparable.

Great reaction Lilly! Hey You will make much more sense in the context of The Wall as a whole (but it's still a beautiful stand-alone track). Basically, the whole concept of the album is events in Roger's (Pink's) life that begin to build a mental wall from the outside world - each event is a 'brick' in the wall (father dying in the war, overprotective/overbearing mother, troubles at school, relationships, etc.) until it reaches a point where he's isolated from everything - the wall is complete! Then this song comes in, and he's calling for anyone on the other side. Now re-listen to the song with that in mind.
There is no shortage of Pink Floyd tracks that are very lyrical...it's a hallmark of theirs (besides incredible musicianship!) Might I recommend: Welcome To The Machine, Dogs, Echoes, Us And Them, Time, Shine On Your Crazy Diamond...for starters.

    The most lyrical?
The Gunner’s Dream from The Final Cut.
Absolutely stunning song and performance, especially Roger Waters’ vocal.
Their earlier music was more atmospheric, and I’d highly recommend Echoes, One of These Days, Careful With That Ade Eugene, and Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun. Live versions are even better, although the studio version of Echoes is a must listen.
For later music, it’s pretty much entire albums: Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall, and The Final Cut.
Later material was good too, but these are the essential ones. Each album has a different lyrical theme, and Roger Waters was at the top of his game lyrically for these albums.

Floyd are renowned for their incredible lyrics. They wrote some of the best lyrics of all-time. Poetic, cutting, philosophical, political, metaphorical, profound, beautiful and occasionally with a streak of dry, deadpan humour. Lyrically they had it all, so it's hard to point to a single song and say, 'this is the most lyrical'. You'll get plenty of suggestions but 'Time' would be a good place to start. Just bear in mind that they often write 2 or more meanings into a song. Usually a specific meaning, as well as a more general meaning, that can apply to the 'everyman'. Thus many lyrics reflect multiple meanings and can be both literal and metaphorical. Add in your own personal meanings and you have an abundance of meaning. :)

You ask for meaningful lyrics, Pink Floyd has tons of insightful lyrics, but "Time" was written by them at about your age and I first heard it at about your age and had to reevaluate my life. A deep look into Roger Water's strange, always questioning, and always creative mind.

The repeating background guitar behind the solo is heard throughout the album, here it probably reaches its largest expression as the main character comes to grips with what his choices has finally completed; The Wall the album is named for. His losses, emotional hurts, psychological damage from losing his father and being practically smothered by his grieving mother’s fear of losing her son has created a person that cannot open himself up to others out of utter terror of more pain. In self defense he walls off the rest of the world and everyone in it… and then in this song, finally realizes the implications of what that means. This is his last attempt at reaching out to someone, anyone, to help him undo what he’s made… but “The Wall was too high, as you can see…”

I was 13. Saw em 3 times after. Huge body of work to choose from, but it's all relevant regardless of period. Humans gonna Human ,and Floyd digs deep into the Flaws of the human condition. You REALLY really need to see "The Wall", the Pink Floyd Movie to get a much better understanding of the album.
    It is FIRE!
    Great reaction.

What you saw was a missing scene from The Wall movie. It's an album that you should hear from beginning to end. The movie was released a few years later with added songs. There are more disturbing scenes, just letting you know. You shoud check out their album "Meddle". There are a lot of tracks that you might like. There are many albums/tracks to explore from Pink Floyd.

The early Pink Floyd were certainly more lyrical with Syd Barret on the "Piper at the Gates of Dawn" album but very much a psychedelic product of its time. They were essentially playing with sounds right the way into "Ummagumma", "Atom Heart Mother" and "A Saucerful of Secrets" albums. On "Ummagumma", with the exception of Grantchester Meadows (deffinitely a super chill recommended track),is literally, drop a tab material and take a ride to the moon. There are some melodious little gems on side 2 of "Atom Heart Mother" like, If, Summer 68 and Fat Old Sun. Careful you don't melt though. If hard and heavy is your thing, these are not for you.
Again with their album "Meddle" side 2 has some more lyrically based tracks like, Fearless and pillows of Winds. After that Album of course is "Dark Side of the Moon" which.....well it's what I would reffer to as the perfect blend. Absorbing, thought provoking lyrics with exceptional musical composition.
"Obscured By Clouds" album was made for a film and again far more lyrical.
Have a poke around in these albums and you may like some of the material if you're having a chill vibe day.

Yes, as so many others have mentioned, if you listen to just one song off any of their concept albums, like The Wall, you do lose context and will be confused as all you get, other than an utterly great song, is a snippet of a greater story like only they can tell. You need to hear the whole album sometime, we did this all the time back then with no social media and 21st century life distractions, so we could just get lost in the music and see a grand story unfold. Between Roger Water's lyrics and the otherworldly musical savants that everyone in that band was you get the apex of human musical achievement, no one ever made better albums than them and their are very few in the conversation with them for who was the best. Next, try something live from back in their prime, try Echoes, parts 1 & 2, from the 1972 Live at Pompeii concert movie. They set up their equipment in the middle of the ancient Roman Colloseum tbere, which was buried by volcanic ash when Vesuvius erupted 2,000 years ago. Much of the ancient city has been excavated and Floyd wanted to do the show there partly for all the souls who were lost on that day, long ago. It is a classic performance of them taking flight and bringing us all along for the ride. David Gilmour does the erupting this time around and the whole band is inspired by the location. You should watch the whole movie when you can but Echoes opened and closed the movie, which is why it is in 2 parts. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎷🎶

I don't know if anyone suggested, but you should watch Pink Floyd The Wall Motion Picture. The Wall is a 2 disc album and it was intended to be listen to from beginning to end. It was supposed to be their Magnum Opus, they had this entire play and set pieces for the concert. It was incredible for the time.

"The wall" is the first album I could afford with my "money"... ; )...My favorite Pink Floyd song is on the album "Wish you where here", and it’s called:"Shine on you crazy diamond"...
But like every time with Pink Floyd, i advise you.the whole album .
I stumbled across one of your videos in which you were listening to "Dark side of the moon", and I enjoyed the way you analyzed and understood it, so I followed your analysis of this album.
Pink Floyd is a unique group, his music crosses and will cross time for a long time.
Thank you for this good time, obviously, I like and I subscribe, bye bye...

In the context of "The Wall" as a concept album, this song and the next "Is There Anybody Out There" is the main characters last cry for help before giving up in the next few songs and becoming "Comfortably Numb". And then descending into hatred and fascism ("In The Flesh", "Run Like Hell", "Waiting For The Worms"), causing the violence and riots foreshadowed in this video.
The most lyrical Floyd would be the entire "Dark Side of the Moon". Another concept album that centres around the meaning of life, how we choose to live our lives based on our belief in what that meaning is and how we treat other people because of those choices. "Time" and "Money" being the central focus on how some chose to live their lives.

The entire album - The Wall - is about a young Englishman who is going slowly insane... great album. You have to listen to the whole album to understand each song. Any one song you would just scratch your head and say what? This is one of my favorites as well as... Comfortably Numb. Great album as I said... still love... Dark Side of the Moon.

From what I can tell, that is a fan made video. Please do yourself a favor and watch The Wall, The quality of sound you experience it with will be very important as the movie is only 9 min longer than the album. I promise you will want/need to watch it again as it will cause sensory overload in an amazing way. I'd watch with a detailed orientated friend as well.

The best explanation I got is this is an album about a guy who has built a wall around himself that started with his childhood and overbearing mother. He is at a point in this song where he is still reaching out desperately for a connection with other people from behind his walls. It is his last attempt before being swallowed by the wall he has built around himself.
