I never heard anyone describe pink floyd better. It leaves you defenceless , and with deceiving simplicity, enters directly to your soul and carries you away on a fantastical journey.

Over 31 years ago I became paralyzed after breaking my neck. I was 17 years old. I laid in the hospital facing the reality of never walking again. That was when I really started listening to Pink Floyd and this song was an early favorite of mine. Hearing Waters' voice sing "hey you, don't tell me there's no hope at all" hit me so hard!
Pink Floyd will forever be my favorite band of all time and I love watching your reactions because I understand the power and journey of their music!

It's such a shame that they clashed so much and fell out with each other. David's voice and character was always the angelic and melancholic element vs Roger's sinister, angry or anguished sound. It was a proper Ying and Yang balance that worked so well together. Thankfully we still have these recordings forever.

    • @bobg8378
      @bobg8378 Рік тому +5

That's not really fair to say "they" clashed. It was Rodger's ego vs Richard then David. Richard, David and Nick remained close friends throughout it all.

It's nice to know that I'm not crazy. You express what I've been feeling since I first heard PF in 1979 when I was 13. "Hey You" was the very first song I ever heard from them. I was alone in my room getting dressed. "Hey You" started playing on the radio and I stopped what I was doing and stared at the radio with my jaw dropped. I couldn't believe what I was hearing! My mouth didn't close until the song was over. Ever since that moment, I've been obsessed with Pink Floyd. I've always said that Pink Floyd is the ceiling and everyone else is the floor. Thank you so much for your wonderful reactions!

Wonderful words Jacque - This was my first song from Floyd that I heard when I was 14 years old (1987). I too stopped in my tracks and couldn't move until the song was over. Sounds like a similar ethereal experience! Take care. x

Pink Floyd music is primal. Innate. Human. And the tones of the instruments and vocals only deepen those traits. So much fun to watch people take this journey.

I always say "simple" does not mean "easy." I agree with you 100% and it's so obvious. Part of the genius is the simplicity. The depth and layers are there, but it doesn't feel complicated or messy - the message is delivered right into your bones.

I sometimes feel like watching your reactions is the closest I’ll get to rediscovering these songs. So many of your thoughts, feelings and discussions are so similar to how I was feeling when I was discovering this incredible music. I had a feeling you would both find this one a bit heavy. But I’m so glad you liked it and that this reaction has given you a better understanding of the album. ❤

Of all the Pink Floyd concept albums, The Wall is the one you have to listen to in its entirety - in one sitting. It's a true story from birth to late adulthood. Any song ripped from the concept comes across as confusing and is usually misunderstood by the listener. They can appreciate the music, of course, but the setting in the overall story is essential.
Take the time for an hour and a half or so, pour yourself a glass of good alcohol, grab your headphones and listen to the story. It's really powerful - a little depressing, but powerful and beautiful!
The Wall was really my first Pink Floyd album. I mean, mine. I had listened to other Pink Floyd albums before, but I didn't own any of them (only one single). I was born in communist Czechoslovakia in 1965 and of course there were no "western" bands playing in our country then (neither radio nor TV) and no labels were releasing albums from the west. They could only be bought on the black market and were incredibly expensive. The only option was to listen to Radio Luxembourg or to copy rock music on cassette tapes. You can imagine what the "quality" of these recordings must have been like. But we still devoured it like crazy. In 1980 my parents were in Sweden on an invitation (my mother had two brothers there). My brother and I had to stay at home so the family wouldn't emigrate. And it was from that trip that my Swedish cousin sent me this vinyl double album for my birthday. You can't imagine what that meant to me! A simple black and white cover, but inside were colorful, crazy drawings with lyrics. I played it every day, several times. Today it's really outdated, it's cracking, but I'll never (NEVER!) give it away. It will go to the grave with me.

Your humanity is very heartfelt, I could feel his emotion as the song ended, he appeared to be tearing up. I have a simple test for a person I meet, I play you this song and if you appear as though you don't go thru a roller coaster of emotions then I easily know you aren't a person I wanna spend any time with at that point. Anyone who doesn't get a bit emotional after a song like this, isn't very human in my opinion. I've watched your song reactions before when they pop up in my feed. We should all be very grateful that artists like Pink Floyd exist to bare their souls so that we can evolve. Of course, most of the lyrics for The Wall are Roger's, but let's not forget that it it is (on this track) David's guitar that is literally crying out in pain. (You could consider watching the movie. Some people don't like the imposition of fixed images on their own interpretations, but the movie does provide a lot of context for each of the tracks.)

The Wall is another one of those albums that if it were created in the 1700-1800's, it would have been played in front of kings and queens at royal courts. The way the lyrics hit you with this song is the Roger Waters effect. Truly, a lyrical master. Pair that with Gilmour's guitar and angelic voice and you have the recipe for epicness. Mason's drum hit heavy at just the right time and Wright's keyboarding is the piece that delivers the musical mindscape that your mind's eye sees when you are "seeing" the background sounds.

The Wall is a powerful album, just as you say. Pink Floyd can create such emotion and grab you. Very heavy concept. Very heavy music. Very heavy beauty.

The first time I listened to this album all at once in 1979 shortly after it came out, I was so taken back and overwhelmed that I immediately started it over again and listened a second time. Then a third. And for the next 6 months or so barely a day would go by that I did not listen to this album completely through. Not by design mind you, but when you try to listen to it a track or two at a time like any other album, it just won't let you. It pulls you in every time. Almost as if you're put into some sort of spell whenever you put it on. It's easy to blame it on the seamless transitions-flow from one track to the other, but I suspect the brilliant lyricism and compositions and haunting soundscapes has a lot to do with it as well. It is simply a masterpiece. The atmosphere this album creates is literally off the charts. Nothing like it in popular music before or sense. I literally had to tear myself away from this album. Let me tell you… a Floyd addiction is nothing to mess with. 😏
It exists! I envy you for your upcoming experience.

They have a way of reaching right into a part of your soul that is buried the deepest. The part you try to suppress and hide because it's a little too real and scary to deal with on a day to day basis. That's why it hits different, it makes you feel seen in a way you're not used to being seen and it can be unsettling and comforting, all at the same time. ❤
