They just dont pay attention enough to prices and how much people selling their items and they just think that people want it more so they just keep the prices at whatever they see, so the prices keep rising up cause some of the sellers are oblivious to the fact that the bots are manipulating the prices so then, the prices keep on rising
I quit the game around 2 years back and randomly stumbled upon this video. God damn I wish there were more high quality documentaries/video essays like this back then. Keep up the good work, I'm excited to see more from you in the future.

Same. I looked at what my "items of the month" were worth now, and I can't say I'm unimressed. Notable ones are: rayman's fist (about 250 DL), that zeus lightning scarf thing (2nd IOTM and about 210 DL), and the royal lock (I don't even know how much it's worth but it's over 250 DL). So basically I went from about worth 5 dls then, to now over 700 dls💀 anyone know if I can sell my account or smth? Pretty sure it'd be worth a lot.
I finally started playing Growtopia again after a few years, and the inflation was literally mind blowing. The teeny devil that i bought for 16 wls were 60wls now?? Half of my items went up in price while the other half went way down. And not the mention half of the worlds in Growtopia are link worlds and vending worlds makes me so mad. Like what happened to standing in worlds talking to people trying to sell your items? People overprice stuff so much in the vending machines and the games no fun unless your rich. So disappointing.

I started playing GT back in 2014 and I think the atmosphere of the game now is what scares me the most. I know I’ve gotten older, but the game just does not feel the same ever since ubisoft took control. No light competition in games, no genuine farming, and a lack of real communication between people (and just friendships in general). I would sit for hours and play GT because of that. Now theres a rush to have all the most expensive items/biggest worlds in order to be on top, but once you get those, what are you left with? The game is over. 🤷🏽♀️
i took a three year break and the inflation shocked me, my teeny angel wings which were 1-2 wl's were suddenly 4-5 meanwhile my ice calf which was 4-5 turned to 1-2, not to mention the crap load of old awesome worlds turned into mindless over priced vending worlds like the world growtopia and dragon. its very sad

Decided to revisit GT again after quitting 2-3 years ago. Safe to say that everything you mentioned in this video is true. Literally everything is MUCH more expensive and the amount of bots (and various new things they are able to do like auto msg, etc) is annoying + making the game worse imo. The one thing that did seem to stay the same was the server stability, its just as bad as i remember.
I feel like there are so many ways that they could combat bots

I mean any game can teach you a lessons even if it’s a negative experience.. I’d say growtopia is actually very damaging cause it kinda fucks your brain up into thinking about digits rather than creativity and stuff like that..

I disagree, inflation and games downfall is 99% on Ubisoft, their mismanagement of botting, overly making the game pay 2 play. Without broken items or dirt cheap gem prices there would be no iniciative for new players to macro, also price manipulation would not be such of a problem if it werent for the stupid amount of worldlocks coming in the game all the time
A new player would most likely take multiple months to get 50$ worth of gems
took me a year to get 2 dls, and after that i was hacked back from scratch now and the grind is extremely not newbie friendly

I posted this on tery's community post : Great video and he did raise some important issues. though he targetted inflation as the main issue in growtopia and said it was caused by manipulation. i dont think inflation is the reason why the game is less enjoyable, but it is a big reason why beginners find it hard to get a foothold. Also inflation is the average increase in price caused by an injection of currency in the market, it is not caused by manipulation. The injection of currency means an increase in world locks, which can only be obtained through gem purchases or in-game purchases. So in reality, hyper inflation was caused by automation of gem making in growtopia from bots and magplants, and especially gem selling, as that made more world locks available in the market. this made players with 10 diamond locks (which was basically the richest u could be in 2013) look like absolute noobs. Now tackling the real issue in growtopia, it is simply the fact that the game is in its final stretch (which may last another 5 years). The issue today is that the original players of the game are getting old, and generally enjoy the game less. A massive chunk of the growtopia community has turned the game into a money making business. there are very few new players, simply because the game is outdated which is normal. So what was once a purely social game, has turned into a boring money making game where people are either playing for nostalgia, or they get bored and play casinos, where their inevitably lost diamond locks are sold for money. The reason why diamond locks have become cheaper in relation to real money is because supply has grown exponentially due to inflation and the fact that many people are selling, so theres low demand. In the end, reality is there is no solution for growtopia. The game has no marketing so there is a very small amount of new players. Old players will get bored as it is a kid's oriented game. The biggest fact here is that ubisoft wouldnt change a thing even if they could, because they are making money off of in-game purchases regardless. They lower their costs by keeping the game low maintenance, and make money to supply their more important projects instead of caring about an obviously dying game.

I just got back 2 days ago after quitting way back from 2018 and I can say that I really feel left out on this game. Im a noob and dont like focusing so much on profiting im rather just wanting to enjoy the game but cant because most things come with the price, world locks. This was such an amazing video I was very hooked and educated if I was a teacher id let you dismiss early lol
You can still play bro. Its not hard to become rich nowdays. But instead of trying to get rich only, you can also have fun by hanging out with friends or going to popular worlds and chilling there(like LOVE).

I cam back a few days ago. I stopped playing a year ago because my friends scammed my magplants and worlds. I had 124 wls in my acc and wanted to buy a devil which at time was 90-105. I went to buydevil and asked a guy selling how much was it. THE GUY FUCKING SAID 5 FUCKING DLS FOR A FUCKING DEVIL WHICH YOU CAN FUCKING GET IN THE FUCKING HALLOWEEN EVENT.

Hi there. The example was to represent the struggle of most players to afford anything due to the unexplainable occurrances in the game's economy caused by inflation. Profiting can sometimes be hard due to the always-changing META in profiting caused by an unstable supply and demand which somehow results to some of the players resorting in begging for donations whether it'd be real or not. Basically, there's inconsistency that makes things difficult for new players to progress - I happen to find that player by coincidence on the day of recording and was reminded on how some players would have to beg for the cheapest of items in the game. It can apply to any item of any worth! ^_^
this just feels sad back in the day it was not about the networth or wls it was about friendships you made along the way you played and had fun with random ppl.
Back in 2018 I owned rayman, royal lock and gscan. I was scammed my rayman and sold my royal lock and gscan to make some money back. I wouldve never thought the "value" would increase tenfold like this. (funny, because i got scammed my rayman trying to sell it for 11 DLS. ELEVEN!!)

I also liked the way you went through some different section for in depth information that made connecting the dots easy.

I just revisited it again after 5 year and it just made me feel terrible. All of the previously popular worlds are either dead, full of bots or replaced by a herd of vending machines. If I do find a place with real people theres a language barrier :(

I'm not convinced price manipulation is the main cause of inflation. Your hypothesis lacks explanatory power; it doesn't explain why the total amount of WLs in the game has increased drastically, and it does not explain why the black market price of DLs for money have been dropping for the entire history of the game. Better explanations of the cause of inflation are item duplication and farming (manual or auto), because both of these actually inject WLs into the system, which explains the increase in total WLs in the game, and why DLs used to cost $7 each in 2016 but $0.45 now in 2022.
You also have not shown that inflation has made new players' game experience worse. Typical items that players need to enjoy the game are basic clothes to get each modification (e.g. pickaxe, ripper wings), farmables to earn wls (e.g. chandelier), and blocks to create their world with. All of these items are far easier and cheaper to obtain now compared to in 2015. The hyperinflating items like IOTMs are luxury items that are not crucial for a good game experience. Overall your video has decent editing but lacks insight.
First and foremost, I'm glad you're providing your insight on the matter.
To explain, price manipulation and supply and demand are two key reasons why prices change often. You are correct, the botting issue and exploits directly inject the gems and world locks into the economy. However, no one knows how huge the problem of botting is exactly. No one knows how much of the gems and/or world locks are distributed throughout the economy every day. Mainly because they are on the "dark side" of Growtopia. The prices of items will not change if it's missing the two key reasons that I just previously mentioned. The prices does not necessarily increase as the supply in gems and world locks increase. It's not entirely linear in other words, well, that's what I've observed. You will only wake up one day to find out that someone or a group of people had manipulated the prices of items (especially those items that are limited as I mentioned in the video).
Admittedly, the reason that I provided about the prices of DLs dipping from a few dollars to now a few cents could be wrong as the world locks that are often produced illegally through botting and exploits usually get sold in the black market, clearly showing the oversupply of world locks resulting in a dip (supply and demand).
It is hard to show the effect of inflation in the video itself because they come in several ways. One can imagine how hard it is to progress in Growtopia and catch up with someone with 100 DLs without saying that the game is tiring and boring - most players would quit mid-way. While it's true that obtaining hyperinflating luxury items will not really contribute to a good game experience, it gives players a goal to work for, but even before they're able to accomplish them, they will most likely feel bored and tired & may even claim that it is not worth their time.

dls dropped in price due to many suppliers and dupes ( we can just see how covid effected it, in 2020 when covid started price was 1.5$ per dl and many lost their job = many will look at ways to find a way to make money which growtopia came in handy. Its not best income for more wealthier countries but for 3rd countries i think its way above monthly income of normal working people. As someone who knows quite a bit of "black market" and know many big resellers i can assure it's due to many players make a living of growtopia which produces dozens of bgls daily + dupes and so called " private exploits" which many individuals abuse and kept for them self so they can make more money ofc. So they supplies resellers at low price which later on resellers sell for under market reseller value and it just drops bit by bit. also 1 example is valentine bgls were 50eur and few days before valentine they were around 75-80eur ( buyers price ). ) Well i hope most of stuff were explained and others understands now how broken this game actually is.

my biggest regret is not buying a growscan before it skyrocketed in price.

I took a break from playing Growtopia for a long while (I'm an old player, talking 2013 kinda old) and I've come back just a few hours ago to find most of my items worth triple they were when I left.

May I add that the creation of Vending Machines added to the Price manipulation crisis. The way how players Hoard items and sell it for more expensive prices. It also made it bot prone, wherein bots would spam famous worlds just to advertise their vend world. Vends also “kinda” ruins the main essence of the game which is to TRADE with other players. For example, the world TRADED, it used to be a social trading world for players to socialize and trade items but now the world is full of vends with overpriced items. Well this is just my opinion and observation about it and I’m no economic expert.
Tbh they could just rerelease iotm‘s and the price would drop but many sellers would be upset but thats how they could fix inflation

Mainly inflation is happening because of how easy it is to get dls now a days. If they would stop botting (which is not hard to do) for example if someone is farming, every 100-200blocks Broken could have a human verification which will be annoying but it will help a ton. Also make wls cost more gems like 5k each and have a diamond lock sink such as regular megaphones not obtainable and lock bots 2 dl or smth people will still buy it (cuz most people buying it anyways already have a ton of dls to waste) or a cool cosmetic which only last for a certain time such as a new pet which upon usage lasts 1 day make it exp like 3 dls and untradeable so it’s not common because people tend to buy stuff that no one has and since it’s new a lot of people will buy to try at least and then bgls will be gone in a few days. Then make the item last only a season and make a new item so it is consistently bought and also allow it to be seen in display blocks because people would like to show it off without using it

I sold 5 magplants for roughly 12 dls when they were new and I needed wls for another project and quit the game shortly after. Also got my drop game that I locked with a royal lock banned when it was some 300 wls. Doesn't really bother me though because I haven't had any interest in the game for several years. Guess that means I'm still lucky in spite of it all.
I personally think that Ubisoft should add some sort of auto farming machines. Because it would probably stop many people from using actual bots. But I think the machine should take fuels. They could add a fuel type from every thing that you can do. Ex. Fishing, silkworms, farming, startships, or whatever else

Hoarding items, Manipulation is the biggest reason of this inflation. Its nice to have people driven economy but the bad side truly shines in growtopia more than the good side. Rayman has become somewhat like nikes now, labeled as a luxurious item for luxury people now.

Yeah I remember the autumn of 2020. When harvest started the rare iotms of 2019 skyrocketed from 10-20 dls+ to 100+ dls. For instance Ruby horns were like 38 dls one day and when I took 2 days off, the price for some unknown reason rose to 125 dls

or maybe its bc ubisoft has made the store give u so much more for your money now. when i started playing 6 years ago it was 10 dollars for 100k gems (50 wls). now its 350k gems (175 wls) + megaphone (60ish wls) thats over 4 times as much wls you can for 10 dollars. huge inflation.

I think one of the best way to counter inflation is public boards because its very easy to manipulate it,
The item hooves of cernunnos is useful and cheap. And the world has no public boards
And it only rose after the event then become stable, unlike other items with public boards can easily manipulated with multiple account
Or, prevent the creation of new accounts by the same player
Rise the gem cost of wls in store, bring back the old price world like honors or nasdaq, where all growtopians can check what actually is the price of that items they wanted to obtain
As a Minecraft server owner and developer, I have face this issue of inflation as well, I found some really good ways to combat it tho, for example, my server have a season reset every 3 months or so, during a season reset we would usually reset every player's inventory and add some new items into the game and make it more interesting, however I know that this method would hurt Growtopia playerbase even more. Therefore I suggest Growtopia to add an anti bot system, it is really simple to add and frankly for a multi million company like Ubisoft, it will be very easy to implement, this way, there will be lesser bot accounts and inflation can slowly decline.
I also think that Growtopia should also start taking more actions against casinos, Casinos are also one of the main issue in Growtopia that makes world locks, diamond locks and blue gem locks value drop by alot since it is really easy to just earn alot of diamond locks or blue gem locks just from a simple casino game. Growtopia should start getting the active and good playerbase of Growtopia to become moderators, that way there will be lesser casino in Growtopia.
Resetting inventory every 3 months is bad thing bc why would anybody play if they just gets deleted after couple months
I just got back after like 4 years of being inactive (would occasionally log back in jic) only find out that the game has changed so much. For some reason farmables are a little bit more expensive (according to my memory) and everyone kinda became a “pro”. And then players selling items for real money and numerous spammers. It felt unreal thinking about how much the game had changed.
And then theres me farming fertile soil and bountiful while not knowing how to earn wls through trading cus everything they buy/sell could worth thousands of wls.

There seriously needs to be ways to make profit other than farming, massing, and trading. If Ubisoft can make more surgery content, ghost content, crime content, etc and make every one profitable, I think growtopia will grow
The latter are more chance based, which requires more investing to start doing them. The former are predictable and stable which are very popular for when you just don't know how to profit.
I left gt for a good 3 years or so, my once beloved flame scythe from carnival which only cost 1-2 wls, and Orbs of elixir 1-2 wls is now ranging from 9-12 like BROOOOOOO.

I’m a Vend owner selling pets .i was inactive for about 2 month when I got back to the game I was surprised that most of the pets actually got cheaper. So I basically it lost a lot of its value. And I didn’t want to sell them it their current state. So I’m wondering why did the prices went down while people talking about inflation.

I think growtopia can take a lot from hypixel skyblock. Talking about PVE hypixel skyblock has one called dungeons and theres a levelling system to use the strong items that come out of the dungeon floors called catacombs level. Levelling catacombs level also strengthens your weapons

Its so easy to explain, the inflation takes place because of huge gambling amounts in casinos which are not being banned , and thoose dls are being sold for cheap real currency and the people just buy it
Disagree, casino is not the main problem of inflation in this game, the actual problem is massive auto 3rd party app. Let me elaborate, casino player didn't produce new world lock to the market, they get the dls by buying from a auto player, if those casino player buy the dls, and its also them who threw it if they lose, right?. I don't mean to support csn player, but using logic, csn player didn't supply any world lock, they demand instead. Csn is already a thing from Seth and Hamumu days, but its never be a problem, the root of the 3rd party app release, like when Powerkuy is a thing in 2020, the game explode in that years, plus in that time is a pandemic where mostly people at home, also i watch some greedy Indonesian people making video about how they making cash by botting in Growtopia, a new player will ofcourse baited by it to botting aswell, in just 3 years of these 3rd party app is a thing, the inflation is rocketing.
Yeah thinking back, it was really hard to make money after the UbiSoft buyout. Not only was inflation happening, things that normal people could afford like Angel wings were going down. If you wanted to invest, you’d buy Angel wings for 40 wls for example and then a few months later they’d be 25 wls. That happened to me. The only things that were going up exponentially were the rayman punch and Magplant, but only the rich could afford that. So if you were rich you could make money easily but if you weren’t then there was no way to progress.

I still cannot believe the future for this game, it is not as good as it was back then, this game was my childhood and I'm sad to see it where it is now..
i wouldn't say that its the players fault but indeed ubisofts fault where they added items that simply made it more easy to progress in the game such as adding mag plants which then opened a more efficient way of earning world locks where players could break a certain farmable, this obviously contributed to the world lock inflation, but this was not enough for ubisoft therefore
they added more items that made it easy to progress like the rayman which could break 3 blocks at once this made the game even more easy, there are even more items but im to lazy to name them all,
@Darius Bendasiuk It's the very nature of the game that's at fault. A game in which there's nothing to do besides acquiring the coolest items is just bound to become "anarcho-capitalism the game". And it's certainly not helped by the awful moderation and general management of the game by Ubisoft.

I miss trade worlds. I used to farm brick and woodblock and sell the seeds for profit back in 2015-2016. “Buybrick” and “buywood” and all the other buy worlds would have many players in them and you can trade. Now you get sent through 10 different portals to a overpriced vend world that doesn’t even sell the item you were looking for anyways…
Tbh I think iotm should have been untradable and have them place in a shop cycle to make gem be better than buying packs to sell and i think gem should be tradable like in pixel world with there byte coin making it more value than wl
Idk if this will really fix it since my thoughts process is if Ubisoft makes wl value drop in favor of something that they can control they can fix the economy significantly but then again it's Ubisoft we're talking about idk if they would fix it or make it worse
one problem with growtopias grind for wls and gems comes from as said in video for how easily bottable it is. for example in pixel worlds players have to get gear and go out of their way to fully clear dungeons or mineshafts to earn most gems, and if growtopia were to do a similar thing were there was an actual gameplay for earning gems, it wouldnt be as boring and as bottable, bots would still exist but the gameplay would most likely be more effective and faster form of getting currency. this might also be completely false idk i dont play growtopia i just find the commentary content goog

I think there's understandably a bit of rose tinted glasses when it comes to the game's past. I've played on and off for a decade and the game has always been profit-centered. It's just that back then the scope of endgame items was much smaller than it is now.
I'm sad about the growtopia it's so hard to play and not enjoying on playing because of high demands of items and seed.

I quit this game ages ago after I got scammed by someone who did a quick item swap in a trade and when I made a review to reach out the devs just shrugged it off and said they couldn’t do a roll back when they did one out of nowhere once just for a Christmas update last year that didn’t even seem good at all

my theory for a working WL sink, would be let there be two ways to buy things from the store, with gems and a second currency, like tickets. how would u get those tickets? dialing 12345 on a telephone and trading wls (only wls) for these tickets, and the tickets only being able to used in the shop. not everyone had millions of gems to spend during valentines but boy do they have the world locks

I have been recently suspended for something i havent done.
I have had my account for 7 years or about 8 and got recently banned for allegedly "Spamming using third party ,something" I was just trying to sell an item but when i got bored i closed my laptop and then later on that same day i opened GT on my phone to see that i was permanently suspended form the game.
Absolutely not fair, there was a lot of spammers in the same exact world that were actually spamming. How did they get punished? Well they didint but i did because the game ban system suspected i was using something im not.
I send an email to the ubisoft team and tell them to take my case seriously since i did nothing wrong and this could happen to other innocent growtopian players, also noted that they shouldnt "throw this under the rug" Because it would just show how lazy the GT team is.
They respond with an automated message pretty much saying a suspension is a suspension and they will not re open my case. They did the exact opposite of serving justice to an innocent player. I also informed them that i could provide screenshoots or evidence of the same day where i was playing on my computer with just growtopia on my laptop and nothing else.
Absolutely ridicilous.
I hope that you can help me reach out to some moderator or something because this is so unfair.
it'll balance it self out back in 2017 there is only 20k players online everytime i play then rn it's back up to 70k again
