Everybody line up behind me for the Cory Wong Signature Stratocaster with no bridge pickup and a 3-way pickup selector mounted where the now unused second tone pot goes so you won't unwittingly smack the pickup selector when you get that funky cartilage hand flappin'.
Matt DeViney But with a 3 way switch there will be no fourth position
I think he means a 3 way switch that selects only what would normally be 3rd, 4th and 5th position. Middle pickup, in-between and Neck pickup. No need for the bridge, or 1st and 2nd positions.
Motoko Kida's (from Tricot) custom Altero Stratocaster already beat it to the punch. Her Strat only has a middle and neck pick up, but only one knob. It's a beautiful guitar too. It would be sick if we got a signature Cory Wong guitar from Fender.
Make it five way but only positions 3 4 and 5 do anything
People are overlooking the potential funkiness that can be achieved with 2nd position
Classic example of tone in the way he plays . . . the bit he played with no compressor was still just so tight and funky and compressed, because that's how he plays it. Dude is a downright tasty guitarist
Haha I always tell my students this! The instrument matters much less than you think, the musicianship is key
its so much in his hands and so little in the gear....way more that I expected
No doubt he is an insane musician but something tells me the recording and UA-cam compression add a lot of audio compression. It sounds just as compressed.
I might be wrong but I am about 99% sure that he pushes the power section of the amp quite hard, so when he picks hard, the headroom of his amp maxes out and therefore tube amp saturation/compression is happening. It is one of the best sounds and can only experience it with a cranked (vintage) style amp to that extent. If you reach that level of power amp saturation, you also need way less overdrive (preamp gain/volume) to get a sound that sounds more driven and punchy. There is no way that this level of compression is coming from his playing or his hands, no matter how hard someone hits. If he would play the same way on a, let's say transistor amp, or 100w tube amp, that isn't cranked, he would not have this level of compression and sound. Don't get me wrong, this is not to discredit him or his playing, he is phenomenal and plays insanely good. It is rather to point out, that there are limits to how good someone can make a signal chain sound. If you want to get the experience I had when realizing this, try a Marshall Studio 15 Vintage with a Power Soak (this is essential), play with the volume of the amp and limit the actual volume by using the power soak. Hear and feel the natural saturation and compression coming in and going away once you dial the master back. Good luck and enjoy your day guys!
Cory's personality matches exactly the music he plays and Vulfpeck's musical style, and I love him for that, what a great player
It's so funky and it's low volume... C'mon, yah.
5:20 keyboard face
Been trying to figure out who that guy is, lol. Haven't found him as a regular part of Cory's band.
Dude's name is Juan Pajuelo. His keyface is rivaled only by his chops....
Stank face
A nice guy and a perfect musician! Vulfpeck rules!
Ok... His right hand technique is freaking me the f out!
Never heard of this dude, but he's quite awesome!
same, stumbled across his other reverb video. fuuuuuunking great guitarist
TheTRUTH you are in for some treats now. He’s been playing with Vulfpeck for I guess a few years now. He’s one of the best rhythm players I know of.
You're gonna wanna go listen to some Vulfpeck like yesterday.
yeah man, entire ay yesterday was Vulfpeck. thanks to apple music, saves me from having to go buy everything
I bet his Les Paul would still somehow crank out a 4th position strat sound
true, just like how Frusciante made his LP sounded like a Strat in Give it Away
@@pstrokeslibsarctic great example!
All my basses sound the same recorded at least the passive ones 🤫🤫🤫😵💫😵💫😵💫😝😝😝
Goddamn, is everyone in vulfpeck just other world amazing??!?👍🏾👍🏾
mike fronk | YES!!!😀
That seems to be their thing.
He's like the Steve Carell of guitar mastery
More like the Pete Holmes
Cory: I really, basically, only over use...
Me: Fourth position! FOURTH POSITION!!
Cory: ...fourth position...
Me: YAAAAAAAAAS
Joel Witherspoon I’m a year late to this comment but thank you so much for this.
'this is all i know!!'
"say the line!"
...
4TH POSITION
I don’t get it.
@@mortysmith9373 You're in for a treat - drop everything and go listen to the Vulfpeck song Cory was named after right now.
Cory is literally the best person.
I like his sound with the compressor. Awesome player.
One of the top guitarists doing it today.
5:09 "the pickup switcher thingy" 😂😂😂
great interview and really cool player! love me some Vulfpeck! fun fact: Hendrix played predominantly in third position with his strats
Such a cool percussive clean tone
Whoa, I didn't know Cory used the Walrus Mayflower! That's my go to drive too, that pedal is a gorgeous warm drive tone. That's sweet, cuz Wong is my jam.
2:03- If there was ever a better Reverb endorsement...
How do we *know* Cory is from MN? 2:15 "OPE!" classic Midwesterner
Thanks for the drive pedal !!!
Love this guy.
2:17 OPE is my new favorite "meme", and i'm from south dakota
"I break one string a year maybe."
Your Pizza Party proved that to be false. :-D
Random question: what is that little wood/brown keyboard in the back corner? Looks like some early wurly or rhodes maybe?
Good eye! It is, in fact, the instrument that pre-dates the Rhodes. It's called a "pre-piano" and was initially developed in the early 1940s (made from surplus army parts) to provide therapy for soldiers recovering from combat. #TheMoreYouKnow
That's fascinating. Thanks!
He’s the Funky Duck!
1:26 HE LEAKED FEARLESS FLYERS EARLY WHAT
what song is this in the fearless flyers album?
Nicholas Kelsey introducing the fearless flyers
Thats his own song, he the fearless flyers took cory's song and expanded on it
I've only recently discovered Vulfpeck less than a year ago, but I love their funk. Dean Town has such a amazing bass line and the guitar comes in with a clear and strong attack. Interesting to see that his picking style came from acoustic because that's kind of the root of where I started getting my funk style. I don't always play funk but my strat on the neck-middle position and my compressor make funk so chunky and strong. I love it.
YES!
Did he say playing the guitar is a result of his hands? This is some next level philosophical shit right here. Subscribe.
He is pretty amazing
he holds the pick the way i used to. i've seen misha mansoor in older videos using the same grip, as well as paul gilbert.
4th position.
"I break one string a year maybe, max...", broke one string two weeks ago during the gig in Serbia. :D
Funk at its best!
Vulf!
Nice subtle plug at 2:02
This guy's fuckin awesome! I need neighbors like this!
Cool dude
he referenced "the hero's journey" …. smart guy
Brian Warner Awesome!
What is that?
Star Wars + every tale about a hero
Isn’t that Mr. fastfinger‘s tale from Mika Tyyskä?
Can somebody share more info about which amp he uses, how he sets it up and maybe a bit more about his setup of drive pedal? Thank you.
Y E S !!!!!!!
Fourth position ftw Cory
This is all I know
Steve Russell
I'd recommend Steve with a headbang
This guy can FUNK it up all night wong!
5:21 that face in the back
I mean, how can you NOT love Corey. That’s impossible.
It Is The Shirt
Fearless Flyers sneak peak at 1:43
where can I buy all these gentlemen beers?
Any idea what gauge strings is he using. They seem pretty heavy
long fingers!
Switch the video speed to 2 and start here 1:01
what kind of pick and thickness does he uses?
Does anybody know what pickups is he using? I love his tone.
That's what I'm wondering. They sound incredible.
Seymour Duncan Antiquities on a $300 Highway One Strat he got off Craigslist, running through hardly more than a compressor pedal and a clean amp. You may also find him playing another strat with single coil sized humbuckers on the bridge and middle positions. Nothing fancy just a peculiar right hand technique mostly
try some Fat 50's. I put them in one of my strats and the tone I am getting is insane
I'm a lite picker too , hardly ever break a string unless my bridge or peg has a bur in it ...
Circus funk.
What are the songs they play?
I wonder what would happen if he uses the bridge pickup.
Who is the bass player and what bass is he playing? Doesn't look like a Fender. I could be mistaken though.
Omg
I never realised how much Cory looks like Mick Jones from The Clash
I found a new Reverb jingle! Playback @5:33 at 0.25 speed. You're welcome, Reverb.
We can't thank you enough for that suggestion!
Wait, is he from Minneapolis?
Watch this at 0.5 speed. You will thank me.
And then listen from 4:54 on.
Lol
Its so funny
0.5x = drunk
1.75x = on cocaine
No I won't
whos the band w ya Cory?
The Greenscreen Band
That's my dude Kevin Macintire on bass
no vulf compressor :(
Vulf Compressor is a piece of software. And I think it's more for drums than guitar.
Andy Brice I think they put it on everything
Isn't that post production?
Third position is mournfully underrated. Jimi, Bonnie Rait, Albert Hammond Jr. from The Strokes, etc., etc., and people are still like, “I never use position three, it just doesn’t sound good!” 🙄😝 lol
yobhsiFehT...I just discovered the joys of the mid position a few years back...the tone there is just spot on so much of the time...
Does he plays fast rhythm with his nails, not with a pick?
Fourth. Position.
5:22 that keyboardist's angry jam face.
This is not a slam on SRV, because again, he’s one of the greats, but Corys’ Stratocaster Sound, transcends the conventional Stratocaster stereotype of always sounding like SRV. Total Badass!!! A Master!!!
anyone knows the strato model he's using on this video?
stonethecrow80 highway one
ok 0:23 ??
Middle pickup with envelope filters... i don’t know man just works
He picks lightly, yet his attack is percussive as phuck.
How does that work?
Speed.
Hitting muted strings
some attack from compressor, perfect muting technique that stop the sound at the moment it hits, and have high bass and treble settings for eq maybe

What's the chord he plays at 2:52? Is it a Emaj9? I see it all the time
Yeah it is. I use it all the time and it looks like he's fretting it as x7687x
Correct
Hey Cory - which Pickups are you using in your Strat? Been watching alot of your videos lately. I Love Playing Crystal-Clean. Strat thru Fender Amp = Tone Heaven for me.
Isn't he one of the actors in Big Bang theory??
Anybody know the name to the opening song?
pleasin' by cory wong
You like the Mayflower because its transparent broskie
Get Mario Camarena on here! So he show some chon goodness
does anybody know the strat model and pickups he’s using?
hi-way 1
Seymour Duncan antiquity surf
I really want to know his amp settings
Yeah and what are those pick ups?!
Just turn all the knobs to 4 and there you go!
Nice hands.
I'm waiting for the most annoying comment from someone that says "Hey do you have tab"? But I did figure this part out note for note. 0:53
Steve K can you make a tab for it and send it to me
Issac Just created the tab.
Steve K can I get it
How?
Steve K do you have an email?
カッティングのキレヤバイな
I prefer the deep 5
FOURTH POSITION
That tone is killing me... 4th Position ftw btw
I break 1 string a year. Maybe max.
Whats the song at 3:05?
Cory Wong - Pleasin!
Please tell me what pickups he's using, what brand, what exact model ? also on this video:
ua-cam.com/video/MS_30HRbM4U/v-deo.html
Thanks
all the comments on cory wong vids are either: this is all i know, 4th position or on this one; the keyboard player ahah
Actually, judging from his right hand, i think he’s picking pretty hard...
Yea he says he picks light but he’s definitely on the aggressive side just by hearing him.
Yeah, you can hear all his attacks pretty clearly, even without the compression.
I always assumed Cory used MAD compression. Turns out his pick ups just have a lot of punch.

What song is he playing at the beginning?
Rob Audino "pleasin'" from Cory Wong and the Green Screen Band album
'68 Vibrolux?? I see 6 knobs on the right side...
looks like a reissue my dude!
BANDana guys get it haha
kill me
my tone comes from not having a long ass thumb nail
