Cory Wong's video about this pedal (this is a must watch!)
• The Wong Compressor //...
Cory Wong is a Grammy-nominated artist renowned for laying down some of the finest grooves across all genres. The Wampler Cory Wong Compressor is at the heart of his legendary tone. More than just a Compressor and a Boost pedal, this dynamic toolkit shapes your tone with sparkling cleans and responsive compression either direct to your amp or straight into your recording interface. Prepare to find the funk!
The Wampler EGO compressor has been an integral part of Cory Wong’s signature sound for years, providing the light touch required to subtly drive the best from his tone, so this was a natural starting point for designing his signature pedal. Cory’s vision included some very specific features including an XLR out so he could go straight into a computer interface, mixing desk, or PA for those signature bright and clean tones. He also wanted to add a boost that allowed him to choose either a flat volume boost or a rich, saturated boost that could push his midrange a little, all in a compact pedal enclosure with two foot-switches and an always-ON mode allowing stage friendly operation. The Wampler Cory Wong Compressor delivers all of this with the premium build quality Wampler is known for.
The Wampler Cory Wong compressor features two soft footswitches that operate each function of the pedal with a three-color LED indicator to show which mode is active. The Compressor side offers complete control over Volume, Sustain, Attack, and Blend as well as Brian Wampler’s signature Tone control which can be dialed in to add sparkle and chime to your guitar’s tone. On the boost side, a single rotary boost control adjusts the amount of boost activated and a profile switch sets the mode of the boost circuit from a flat boost to a rich saturated boost with an extra vibrancy around the 550Hz range. Combine both channels for glorious compression and a powerful lead boost.
The Cory Wong Compressor is a complete solution for sculpting tone either on the stage or in the studio.

If you've read this far, you should know... NO pedal is the secret to anyone's sound. Technique and talent is. However, this IS THE main tool that Cory uses on almost every guitar track.
I'll never go back to a compressor without a blend knob. This one sounds fantastic!
don't know why this uncommon to have one but is a most for me too
Wow. That is a great idea. I did not watch that part of the video.
550Hz for the boost is a classic engineer's trick- start with the fundamental frequency you WANT to boost (here it's 275Hz for the High E string) but double that frequency and feed THAT into the compressor (or SC it for my Engineers) and boom. The fundamental is out of the Compressor threshold but the second harmonic and all freqs above it get squished. Instant "sound you were looking for" 👍
Take a bow for the playing Brian. Really nice to see you showing off your chops ❤
Yes, this is a WONGPLER pedal! 🤟🏻🎸🔥
This is a work of art! A TON of features in a small enclosure. Love it!
I think it's super cool that you do all of these informative and entertaining videos. I appreciate you and picked up your Phenom pedal and it sounds so good brother!
Super nice pedal Brian!!! It's another addition to the legend. Congratulations.
The WONG pedal sounds awesome, just like all the Wampler pedals. Love the physical design and features. Congrats Brian!
Great playing Brian! I also like my Bravado almost cranked ❤
Congrats to the whole Wampler team and Mr Wing on the release. Can’t wait to get my hands on it. Love the MDX boost and the xlr out is awesome. Keep em coming lol!
Sounds like a winner! Cheers Brian!!
This thing sounds great man!
I am loving my Wampler Ego Mini, its already so good. NOW THIS GOT BETTER! I want one!!!
That boost is killer. Great combo pedal.
So cool! I love just how squishy it gets. Great features too
🤣 Loved the intro Brian! Great video as always.
I really want it!
I’d love to try it! I have the Ego on my board and I finally was able to learn how to properly use compression because of how great that pedal is.
This release is VERY exciting 🤩🤩
If I could only have one pedal it’d be the Ego. Thought I’d never use another compressor until I head this! Instantly number 1 on my list for pedals to save for. Thanks Cory and thanks Brian!!
Just watched Pete Thorn's demo/review, great sounding pedal!!! You are the best my friend!!!
Love Brian's videos!!
Nice chops!
Rob Reiner: Why not just have the switches further apart so you don't accidentally hit the comp switch?
Nigel Tufnel: ......this one has a switch on the side.....
:D
It's like the hilarious push push that, instead of engaging an extra pickup, locks the guitar in 4th position.
Time to upgrade my compressor to the Cory Wong. The XLR & booster are really cool features. Cheers for the great demo. 🎸🎶🎵
Wongpler
Nice guitar man. I've been playing 20 years and I've only ever bought maybe 10 pedals.but I plan on supporting what you do, cuz I've followed for a while(haven't for a bit now but I'm back)and I dig what you do
Brian’s playing… a Strat?!?!
at least he didn't try to sling it around and break its neck... like 9 years ago....
@@TedSchoenling he will never live that one down. 🤣
When he’s not breaking them 😂
Well it is a Cory Wong video!
Nooooooooooo!!!
Sounds amazing
very nicely done.
Looks and sounds great
What a cool pedal!
I believe the ego is genuinely one of the best pedals ever made. Might just have to try this out.
Gonna buy this asap
Crazy how much technology can be crammed into such a small enclosure. Cool stuff man.
I bought the EGO because of Cory (and Joe Dart). Good to see him get his own signature stompbox from such an awesome company!
This thing is awesome!
Love mine, thanks!
Cory is fantastic!
Cool pedal. I wish I had that kind of energy to hit it but my Ego compressor is still always on.
Oh, bri!. You got the wong pedal!.
I was about to buy the Ego this week but I might have to get this instead!! I don't know much about Cory Wong so I'll check him out. Thanks, Brian :)
Oh yea 🤘
Check out super secret band while you are at it
sooooo i was just about to buy a pulp n peel for the xlr / compressor combo on bass. ive been an ego user for years so this could not have come at a more perfectttttt time
I read the name as WONG COMPENSATOR...which would be a pretty good name for a pedal of this nature.
Sounds great! What does the Sustain knob do? Is it a release control or threshold or something else?
I haven’t been this excited for a pedal since the Halo. Insta buy.
A boost and XLR features sound to me like it IS a good compact bass pedal as well
Interesting. I have a Wampler Ego Compressor that I'm happy with.
Awesome! BTW, where can a get that Tshirt?
Faaack I've been an Ego user for many years (absolutely takes my acoustic tone to a much, much better place) but I've gone down to the micro sized one so this new one woulnd't fit in that space on my board. Time to make the tough decisions as to what might have to go to make room because that is a really, really excellent feature set on a compressor.
Amazing pedal Brian! I realized that this compressor is buffered only. Not true bypass. Can we also use it as a first BUFFER IN pedal in front of our pedal chain ? Do you think it can works well? Thanks 🙏🏻
Is the compressor circuit any different from the original Ego compressor?
Killer compressor for bass in case anyone is wondering.
Hmm, haven't tried it with my bass. I've been using a TC Electronics Spectracomp. Thanks for the tip.
Now THIS is a compressor! A piece of my paycheck will be funding one of these.
Look at you go!
Genius strikes again
You can take the guitarist out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the guitarist. 😄
(love the always-on switch idea)
Please demo it with humbuckers please. Keeley makes one that has a switch for single coils and for HBs. It is needed on that particular pedal for whatever reason. I'm curious how this one will treat HBs. Please?
A very cool pedal and video Brian - as was your last video on the various "modelers" that are out there right now. I like the Wampler pedals a lot but they're extremely difficult to get here in Ireland so it's probably best that you send me an endorsement deal! I'll probably take it! 🙂😶🌫
Is this like a physical version of the Vulf Compressor plug-in?
I have a Ego Compressor which I really really like, wondering if this is worth the upgrade for me? can't see me use the XLR.
Whats the ground lift do? Does that mean if i connect my tele to daw on computer, it would get rid of hum of single coil? Or hum connected to amp for that matter
Hey Brian, I purchased one of your Fuzz pedals during breast cancer awareness a few years back as my Wife was going through Breast Cancer ( 5 yr. survivor ) you also had a Pink Compressor pedal and I was wondering if you were ever going to reissue that one in Pink again?
I don’t think so, but I’ll be doing some more pedals for the cause
What studio or guitar pedal compressor is this Cory Wong compressor based on? Cory Wong mentioned he was trying to make a compressor sound very fat and Wide sounding but I don't hear the compressor sounding extra fat and wide which would have been nice to have switches that would do all the hard work for you to get an extra fat and wide compression tone.
With the Cory Wong Signature Setting a get a popping noise on every attack! OK, there is maybe the Blend Knob to avoid this, but than the compressor effect is not hearable anymore.
So, would this help me refine my tone as an Irish mandolinist? :/
NAM folder!
Did you use GPT to write this script?
How well does it work on bass ? And is this a digital or analog pedal ? Thanks !
Works great! I believe there is at least one video on the product web page showing bass through it and Cory Wong has one up as well
Hey Brian, the buffer specs in the Cory Wong compressor are 1mega ohm input and 100 ohms output? Do you think i can use it first in my pedal chain as my buffer input?
Yes should be no problem at all
@@wampler_pedals Cool, i am gonna try it with mine then. Thanks a lot Brian!
Has anyone made a pedal that replicates position 2 and 4 on a strat for 3 way Teles and Strats without having to change wiring in the guitars? Put two buttons on it - 1 for on and off and 1 for alternating 2 and 4. Add a volume, tone, tele/strat switch, and quack/phase level knob. I think there is a market if no one has built yet. Put me on the list 😊
Can the quarter inch and XLR be used together as stereo out? I’m already imagining sending one out to go to delay/reverb so FOH can blend the clean and distorted signals. Sorry if this is documented somewhere, I promise I looked 😅
It would be dual mono, but yes you can use both at the same time
Hey Brian I have a terraform (coolest pedal ever) and the preset button isn't working anymore. I gig all the time so don't want to send it in if I don't have to and was wondering if I should just peek under the hood? Not sure if that voids warranty. (Honestly not sure if I registered it but I think I did)
You might be able to do a factory reset and fix it MAYBE, but best thing to do is email us and we will help you with it. There isn’t anything user serviceable inside. Help@wamplerpedals.com
@@wampler_pedals Thank you for the response! 🤘
Tele, Wong and a deluxe would cover any country gig I’d ever get hired to do. I know there are chickens to be picked in that box. There needs to be a JHS crossover with this pedal. Don’t change the circuit, just have Richard and josh sit down at a cracker barrel in Evansville for iced tea where they can do a new design aimed at chicken pickers. Make it yellow of course and call it the pollo loco or something wacky like that.
Hi Brian,
I’ve been playing most of my life,
(not a bedroom player).
Maybe I don’t know my ass from my elbow, but I’ll be damned if I can tell the difference between, most compressors.
The rubber right hand is Cory's secret. You ain't got one, and neither do I. Nobody does. He stands alone. He is Rubber Man.
Buddy! What about those of us who have size 12.5EEEE size shoes?
I tried to get this one, but I got the wong compressor. 😆
I wonder if the Optimist goes before or after this pedal? DI is super convenient, straight to desk, very Nile Rodgers
I always go compression first tbh.
If you put your compressor before your drive pedals it won't amplify the noise they make nearly as much, and it won't make your pick attack so harsh either. It lets your drives do what drives are supposed to do- they restore some of the dynamics you lost and if you use a drive with a potent, active EQ- you can restore any frequencies you lost and wanted to keep as well. I always run mine before my drives.
I don’t play funk, but I somehow want one anyway.
Personally I'd much rather listen to you playing! :o)
That’s very kind of you!
Always good to hear from the builder.... You did very well stepping outside of your usual playing style to comp Cory's style.
BTW, Brian needs to sit down with Michael Palmisano & explain the compressor to him .... 😆 > ua-cam.com/video/q1IEcvzwp4o/v-deo.html
I dont even know that Brian Wampler had a Strat 😂
3 of them actually! 😄
Yeeeehaaaawwww
No, it’s not the secret to Cory’s sound. Cory has sounded like Cory way before this pedal existed. The secret to Cory’s sound is Cory.
Still a great pedal though. I love mine.
that t-shirt tho....
Cory Wong is another one of those amazing guitarists that I have no interest in listening to for more than 2 minutes at a time.
I think Cory made a mistake on the size. It is too narrow if it is not going to be mounted down, but I am sure his is. I guess all are on pedal boards. But if you were just using this without it mounted, stepping on the switch looks like it would try to turn over. And with all the pedals in the world, you are still not going to get that sound that only he has. You did not get even close to whatever it is that he is doing. And if I tried, I'd probably end up injured. Cory is all by himself. He is a one of a kind thing. The way he plays is bizarre.
The secret to Cory Wongs sound is Cory Wongs hands and that creative mind of his. Try to put a patent on that, player. Impossible
That sound from the xlr output was drier than a camel's toenail.
Yep! Direct to board. Cory/Vulfpeck does quite a bit of that, also Prince
If cory wong i don't wanna be white
Not another compression pedal. Enough.
No it isn't. He had that sound before this pedal and will after it. No sale.
cool. That's the reason for the very, very last part of the video description: "If you've read this far, you should know... NO pedal is the secret to anyone's sound. Technique and talent is. However, this IS THE main tool that Cory uses on almost every guitar track."
@@wampler_pedalsgot em'
I'll do it for you guys, so you can rave on it for years to come: I don't like Cory Wong nor wulfpeck... brings nothing new to the table, sounds average. and yes, I don't listen to comercial music ( but it's personal, you're free to enjoy whatever you like). I'll try this pedal at some point as I'm a compressor freak!
