- This IRON MAIDEN TAB Should Be Illegal: THE NUMBER OF THE BEAST! Hyperbole? Perhaps, but no, this is a true statement. ;) Glad you're all enjoying my BAD TAB series. This "Trooper" edition is gold for me, but not for those learning from it. :(

If Number of The Beast was played by The Ramones
Or the Clash with those barre chords.
And The Kinks
I was going to say Green Day or Ramones.
My name is ramon😭
Actually that sounds kinda awesome…only if it were the Ramones!
I was happy to get my hands on some SOAD TAB books as I couldn't figure out some weird details back in the day. These were also... kinda special xD
How bad was it, I’m guessing little to no palm muting?
Exodus has a heap of tab books transcribed by Kragen Lum, he filled in for Gary Holt on some tours. Those are the best tab books I've ever used. Definitely worth checking out if you like impossible riffs at ridiculous tempos.
Thanks dude!
I had that book 30 years ago when I was a beginner, this was the song that made me suspect that there must be something very wrong with the tab.
You know your audience, but man, the Dream Theater - Images and Words book is a spectacle to behold. Love to see a video on any of the songs from that one.
I got the Awake book from a buddy of mine when we were first learning in the 90s. He came over a week later and freaked out when he opened the book to find all of my notes! There was tape, red pen, white out, highlighter, sharpie, post it's, it looked like a god damn physics dissertation died knife fighting a Latin Bible. For years, it was just assumed that I was the most knowledgeable musician in the group😂, but a child could find most of these really. Sometimes it's as simple as a typo that puts a particular phrase on the wrong string. Use the book, do not trust the book.
I had it from the library and it was pretty good but literally the first riff after the palm mute E strings in Metro pt.1 was wrong
It was extra disappointing because it says Petrucci himself edited it on the cover, so you expect it to be accurate, but... I guess he just signed off on it without looking at it.
Evan Bradely corected all the tabs from IaW to SfaM. you can contact him and he'll send you them.
train of thought is terrible as well
I'd go to a special Iron Maiden concert where they would play only songs as they are tabbed in this book. It would be an amazing sh** show
Sup MP
Janick Gers plays these tabs
I feel like these sort of things were written by someone who studied ear-training at classical music school and was so used to notating things completely by ear, they never thought to actually play it back to verify if they were right. And of course, they never learned about the blues scale, so they assumed that since those scale runs sounded good, they must be diatonic.
Man, I was that poor beginner that felt like they weren't good enough ! I'm not exactly a natural talent and never really developed my ear so TAB books were my goto thing. Fast forward 30 years and I started playing again and thank goodness for youtube how to videos, I'm not half as bad as I thought I was though I'm still totally a novice ! really great to keep your motivation up when you can actually play it in a sensible arrangement
When I bought this book 20 somewhat years ago, I virtually thought what you said: I'm to dumb to play Maiden. Great video concept, I love it!
Would be interesting to hear the whole song according to the tabs😂
To think back in the days, way before internet tab, I thought these big tab books were officially accurate. I wonder how many songs I tried to learn wrong and just gave up on because it didn't sound right and thought I was my fault?😁
I'm sure I did the same
You know ever since you started this series I've decided to take my tab books off the shelf and away in storage because I need useful music books not decorative pieces or whatever
The first tab book I bought and I was excited! I thought I'd never be able to play Maiden after going through a couple songs :( Needed that hug. Got a Guitar For The Practicing Musician issue with either Number or Wasted Years in it (I don't remember which I got first) and then realized how bad the book was.
I remember the online tabs in the early 00's throwing me off a lot as a beginner. I'd turn to these books as fact. How can these books be so bad.
Me too! I thought these books were official and signed off by the band as the real deal.
@@Whiteyy191 Same here...I fell for that whole "I'm not going by those UNRELIABLE online tabs, I'm getting the OFFICIAL book!" But luckily for me, I learned pretty quick not to trust even those too...Metallica's "...And Justice For All" tab book anyone? lol Yep, right off the bat with the "Blackened" riff, the x-2-x-2-x-2 nonsense on the D string, I was like "thaaaaaat can't be right"...and it's not like I could search on youtube for reference/verification (didn't exist yet when I started in '03)...I ended up finding out the real way when I bought the 'Live Shit: Binge and Purge' dvd and seeing the Seattle '89 concert and realizing "So THAT'S how it's played!"
Online Tabs are generally, in practical terms, BRUTALLY peer reviewed. The books back in the day were just a fallacious Appeal to Authority
Never had that tab book. That was always a difficult song to play right for me. You nail it as always!!
This song always gets tabbed with a measure of like 7/8 at the start just so they can get the first note played to land on beat 1. Same thing with Kickstart My Heart, same thing with the drum intro from Rock N Roll. Why are publishers so terrified of asking guitarists to start on something other than the first beat?
Yep!! I remember trying to learn this song from this book and it really set my confidence back for a long time. Exactly what you talked about at the end of the video. Thanks!!!
I feel like you’re my long lost brother and possibly long lost band mate because all we did in the early 90s was think we sucked in guitar because of tabs like this and the others you’ve done videos on. Keep doing these as it makes me feel better each time🤘👍😂
🤘🏻🔥 awesome video! Think this might just be my favourite Iron Maiden tune.
The book version kinda sounds like how it would sound if The Clash wrote or covered it.
Can't believe this video comes out today. I actually played this song yesterday and also had this book back in the early 90's. Still remember trying to learn the song from that book :)
When was this tab book released?I can't find the one I had(I looked after your other video)but I got the book probably in 1986 and I swear the one I had was fine, well I play the songs right and I don't have the greatest ear so I learned them from that book.Wierd.And I'm the old guy who needs a hug I'm 50
AWEEE COME GET A HUG 🤗 I NEED ONE TOO MY FIANCEE JUST LEFT
I still have this book, along with others in your series. It really did destroy your confidence back in the day, especially as a complete beginner. So lucky to have the resources that are about today
I had that book as a beginner back in 1993. Still have it, actually. It was exactly the kind of setback you described. I remember having my guitar instructor teach me Running Free, by ear, at one point and thinking how much easier it was to play then the songs I had attempted to learn from that book.
Love these videos - these books had me so confused when I tried to learn the songs.
I'm English, 49 and one of those in need of a hug!! I had a few very similar terrible TAB books in the 80s and early 90s which complicated things that I subsequently found out didn't need complicating. I ended up disregarding them in favour of learning by ear after discovering power chords and pentatonics. Apart from learning basic chord shapes and scales from a book, I've always done it by ear and/or trial and error!
But they were all we had back then!! Lucky us......!
(Must've been incredibly difficult playing it wrong!)
Dude actually learned the wrong way to play the song just to show us how much of a joke this book is 😂
Do you realize how easy this is for him?
I have this book. I got it a long time ago and it actually helped me out with a few songs. Phantom Of The Opera to name one. Most of us at the time (was published 1987) learned by listening to the record, or tape. CD's were not even a thing yet let alone spotify etc... TAB was not everywhere, and was not so easily available. But if you were stuck with certain riffs, this book helped. Our expectations were not so high as the last 20 years or so lol. I played some original stuff not too long ago and a kid asked me for the TAB ??? I don't TAB my own riffs. Use your ears man lol.
@@jrg770 l got the book in the early nineties when l was around 20. I found it helpful.
Keep up the good work, Mike! We appreciate it…
Hey Mike could you do Marty Friedman habits or techniques please?
I'm in love with that flying v in the background 😭💖
heyy I love your videos, keep doing what you're doing :)
Mike rocking the contacts! And rocking on, as always, Cheers Mike 🤘😎🤘
OMG - When the Saints Go Marching In. But of course. I recently realized one of the licks in Peace Sells has the Star Spangled Banner in it too. Iron Maiden has a few songs that sound much better in Drop D - this is one of them. I think maybe the writers of this book thought they could help guitar players by showing them something kinda around about what they are doing and were just like, OK, now take that and figure out the right way. For someone that couldn't transcribe by ear at all, this book would actually help them in that way. Every one of my favorite players grew up without tab and they all seem to be the best players to me. I love tabs, but it allowed a lot of people to skip that step of learning by ear. This book though was pretty upsetting. I was so excited when I got this and then was just like, this CAN'T be right! And there's not even any solos! Then I was really excited to get the And Justice for All book to learn the Blackened riff - (insert voice of Sam Kinison) Oh no - they did it again! OH OOOOH!
I agree about the drop d part. When Adrian returned he started playing a lot of the older songs in drop D, as well as newer songs to even out the 3 guitars
Finally someone, who agrees with me on Peace Sells… it’s the part where he says « President of the United States of America »
Some old TAB Books aren’t even transcribed by guitar players. I use to be frustrated with finding a TAB Book of a band I was excited about …. Only to find it miserably inaccurate.
It did get me to transcribe some of the stuff I like, but I’d find there were always sections I couldn’t hear well in the mix.
Tips -
1) Find the exact pitch of the tuning.
(Find a note that’s in tune with recording, and use a Guitar Tuner to find its value in cents.) This will hopefully make transcribing much easier.
2) These days there are various softwares for slowing or isolating parts you want to transcribe.
3) Write out what you figured out clearly… You WILL get better the more you practice transcribing.
4) SING or HUM parts you’re transcribing.
5) Finally, make sure it’s a quiet setting where you can concentrate on the task.
😊👍
I got this book right after I started playing guitar... even just starting you could tell it was wrong but it definitely helped me figure our how to play it correctly and understanding the same notes on different strings. So it wound up being beneficial but not in the way it was intended... I still have it along with about 12 years of GFPM stored away for posterity :)
I used this video as a quick turtorial to learn the basics of this song ... nice job i like it ;)
im glad they tabbed out a streetlight manifesto style cover for the tab book
I am an older guitar player who tried to learn the song from this same horrible tab book I picked up in 1985, and yes, even though I knew nothing about guitar at the time, I knew enough to realize this didn't sound anything like the record. Ironically, the book cost me as much as my ticket for the Powerslave Tour did in 1984. Unfortunately, we did not have isolated guitar tracks or UA-cam back then, I was learning songs by recording them on old reel-to-reel tape and bringing the IPS switch to half speed. :). I loved your comment about how the transcription sounded like "When The Saints Go Marching In" - maybe it was transcribed by someone trying to counter the music's "evil" influence?!? Thanks for this video, it was awesome! Anybody want to buy a vintage Iron Maiden Tab book? It's barely used!!!!
I had the 'Iron Maiden - The First 10 Years' tab book and it's pretty much the same as that book. Probabbly the same tabs under a different book title. It's shockingly bad, but it made me figure out some things by myself which in turn made me learn certain things about playing the guitar that I would not have figured out and gave me an improved approach to playing guitar.
I also had a 'Best of Megadeth' book which gave you a tab for playing the vocal melody instead of the actual riffs on some of the songs.
Absolutely useless for a beginner guitarist.
The songs from the first four albums are the same transcriptions from this book. After that they include the solos and riffs, and while they're probably not totally accurate (as they're mostly arranged for one guitar), they're a lot closer and you can at least play along with the actual songs.
I also had a Best of Red Hot Chili Peppers book which sounds like it was from the same series as your Megadeth one. Absolutely useless.
I bought that book back in the 1980's and I still have it never really did learn any songs from it just figured them out on my own
I’d love to see you look at the System of a Down: Toxicity tab book. There’s some weird stuff going on in there
I think this book had the intro drum solo in Where Eagles Dare transcribed as guitar pick scrapes
Played it by ear the right way, learned the TAB way later, then went back to how I was originally playing it because I learned how wrong the TAB books were back in the day. Still correcting mistakes from ...And Justice for All thanks to those damn books.
When I first considered learning (circa 1994), I saw this book and bought it. I was excited to see lyrics to the first four albums. I thought to myself, "Well, if I don't stick with the guitar, at least I'll have learned the lyrics to everything." Again, this was before you could look up lyrics on the internet.
The second or third tab book that I bought was this horrible Def Leppard one that covers the first two or three albums. Ugh, it was almost as bad as this "Maiden one.
I have a Led Zeppelin Complete Guitar book (all songs from the first 5 albums) that was printed in 1975. For example for Since I've Been Loving You and No Quarter they didn't notate any guitar notes, there are just some basic chord charts.
Was it a tab book or just one of those general sheet music books? If it's supposed to be tab, but some of the songs only show the basic chords, then that's downright pitiful.
@@Larry_Ibarra I don't know if there were "tab books" backs then. Maybe half of the riffs have been transcribed, but there are tabs only for one song (guess which one...) It's called "Guitar" so I think anyone who bought it assumed it'd have most if not all the guitar parts.
Mike you should do a videos playing all the full songs how the bad tab books say to play it lol
When you squeeze the entirety of the 1st 4 albums into one tab book, corners ate going to get cut on an epic scale. I've got that tab book, and it has a certain nostalgic value as a collector's piece- but its absolutely useless for learning Maiden's songs.
I grew up with this tab book + the And Justice For All tab book LOL I somehow managed to become a decent guitarist
Really love this series
I had this book back in the day and apart from being totally disappointed with it, this really messed up my playing for quite some time. This has been great seeing just how bad it really was and that it wasn't just me that couldn't play it right.
Ive had that tab book for years and it does indeed suck. Nice vid.
I have fever, in case I die, send my regards to Skeletor and Tepid, Bernardo Soriano, to and all the guys, azkari, ogreoverlord, the chilldude, Otis, hanna and vomviersen, and all the people I am forgetting. I feel so week, my all muscles hurt, my mind is working in idle mode. If I watch armaggeddon I am gonna cry again when the guys say "We have to crash the ship with the bombs", then everybody say their goodbyes through the cam but one of the pilots cant see his newly born son because he had an accident and lost his sight, so he just can touch the screen (and then I cry) 😭 😭
I feel so week, I am gonna see if I can get down the temperature with a beer, anyway I am always thankful for your channel and for having appeared in your 2 subscribers play, I was going to send you 2 recordings for the next live, but my time is running out it seems, my temperature.. Wait a second!, what is that you did to your eyes, are they contact lens? Cmon!
PS: I am not sure it was armaggedon or another movie, but.. you understand.
Pablomi, you're gonna be fine. We'll see you at the next Livestream. Stay strong my friend.
Confirmed! I used to have this book, and it's great to know that after all these years someone has confirmed that I'm not crazy.
The iron maiden "the first ten years" tab book is prettt shocking to say the least, thats worth a video
1:33
The autors of the book when figuring the tabs out: "DUUUUDE that's it, I swear" - "I know right?!"
Do more of these videos Mr. Mike
Luckily i started playing in the early eighty's when there was no tab so if you wanted to learn anything you had to develop your ear
it was the most frustrating but best thing i have ever learnt to do imho as far as musicianship goes.
I got a lot of mileage out of that book when it first came out, it was light years ahead of all the piano player "guitar" books from the 70's. And to be fair, if you watch the original music video the opening riff is played at the 12th fret with that weird, pinky over the power chord thing. Christ, I wasted so much time trying to get that to sound right until I saw a live video with Adrian playing the riff at the 5th fret.
I like how these books somehow make it sound worse AND harder to play
LMFAO - I stillhave this tab book lying around someplace....it was a complete joke like a lot of tab books back in the 80's
Sadly I have just about every Tab book you've featured for their bad tab no wonder I gave up and switched to learning fiddle
Even when using tablature you have to trust your own ear. Seeing a live performance video helps tremendously because it gives you a point of reference. Trying to figure out dual guitars can be difficult because many times they play different parts that can throw you off track when only listening. It takes a long time to develop your ear and honestly knowing some music theory can help immensely. Check who did the tablature as well. Some of those guys are great. If it says Mel Bay run.
Brings me right back to HS!!
Confucius say "In order to play something the right way, he must first learn the wrong way"
Now I want Iron Maiden to do a cover of when the saints go marching in
John Petrucci made those tab books, just to troll us xD
OMG! Man! That was my FIRST guitar tab book as a teenager. I got it when it first came out. And even as a fledgling guitar player, I knew that book was crap. The Trooper was a good translation but Number of the Beast and the rest were absolutely horrid. LOL! I STILL have the very same book on my shelf today... 35 years later!
I never got good at playing but me, a complete pleb, picked up this song by ear years ago. It makes you wonder who the hell they got to create some of these tab books.
I need that hug. That book @#$@#$ me up really bad back in the day. It about made me give up. Luckily I found guitar magazines.
3:11 JOEY’S ON A VACATION FAR AWAY
It was books like this that made my band fail….well…..that and the fact that we were trying to play drunk…..ahhh the early 80’s!
That tone sounds sooo good
Crazy to think it wasn’t mic’d and it’s an ampsim, it fooled me for months
Some one owes me a hug!
It really does kinda sound like "when the saints go marching"
Man, I'd love to see the transcriber play these songs. :P
Great video! This book almost made me quit playing guitar back in 1983 when it came out. Moral of the story kids: Trust your ears.
There has to be a story behind how this book is. I was so happy to get this because it's FOUR albums! But quickly realized how shit it was. I use it more as a guide and used my ear for the rest. It had some neat articles in there though. Do you know about the "Fear of the Dark" book? I had that and then let a friend borrow it and they lost it. It pissed me off because I can't find that book anywhere to purchase. It's like it never existed. To add insult to injury, the guy doesn't even remember borrowing it. The funny thing is that the guy is now in a famous band.
That book was done by Guitar for the Practicing Musician, or at least the editor...John Styx, I think his name was. The best part of that book was the interview with Steve Harris. The tab is all over the place in that book. I do not recall a single solo being transcribed. Rather, they wrote this blurb about the solos being based on a blues scale, then show the scale and tell you to figure it out from there.
Phantom of the Opera I think was reasonably close, but not sure. Could play it with one finger according to the book.
Not for nothing, but The Number of the Beast turns 40 this year. Yeah. 40.
The tab book for Pantera’s Far Beyond Driven is a nightmare! Check out the solo for Throes of Rejection. Yikes! But i gotta feel for the transcriber Danny Begelman who had an impossible job of figuring out what the heck Dime was doing in that solo. Still can’t suss out some sections. Plus the tab book messes up the additional lyrics for Throes. Again, that’s bad, but I think Phil was making up a play on words for a drug. But still, the lyrics are printed in the liner notes.
Mike, remember those tab books that came in almost a ring binder, guitar superstar series? Damn, those sucked..
This was the first book i was given shortly after i started playing guitar back in 1991, I Wasted Years 😉 on it got no were and probably sounded terrible.. I Need A Hug 😂🤣
Man i had this book when i was starting out and thought i was just too dumb to read tabs and gave up and started playing everything by ear instead 😂
More tab videos man there great
I had this book when I was about 19-20 and combined with a cheap guitar just meant months of frustration and bleeding fingers. Could never get anything to sound like the real songs. No wonder I gave up guitar.
Now I'm never going to be able to un hear the saints go marching in.........
That’s 25 years of pain for me 😂 My wife just said ‘wait, you’ve got that book!’ then gave me a hug.
I feel like the comments section has become a support group for all the victims of how tempting this book looked when it was on the shelf.
I had that stupid book when I was young and I gave up guitar for a couple of years because of it. I assumed the book was correct (I was a kid) and no matter how hard I tried so much sounded wrong or was impossible to play.
Bought this book in 1989. It was actually less frustrating than the GFTPM Metallica books because its errors were so egregious that it was obvious that it was completely wrong after ten minutes of working with it at home. I probably should have looked more closely at it prior to buying (I was still a pretty green guitarist at the time.) I was so annoyed I still remember how much I paid. $32. Still have it...
NGL - I actually really love the "wrong" verse riff from the book. It's not Maiden, and the actual riff is better - but it's still pretty catchy.
2:47 - 2:58 Not you again, Disco Maiden!
Could we have something on the guitars of Blind Guardian? There's almost nothing on the Tube and it's a shame!
The number of mistakes
And these number is 777
You're way they originally do it is the correct way, that book is absolutely ludicrous and ridiculous😂 thank you for this.
Yeah, I quit guitar in my teens because of these tabs. Just wasn't adding up with what I was hearing, thought the problem was with me
Please do a video on how to count the intro up to the verse. Everything I'm seeing looks way more complicated than it must be.
Where do you live?? It’s 3 AM for me rn and you’re uploading videos lol
That tab book is unholy
My local music store had this book back in the 1990’s. I wanted it so bad, but I was a broke teenager and couldn’t afford it. I guess I was lucky 🤣
They turned the intro into surf rock.
heck yea, was hoping for this abomination :D
Those tab books had 14 year old me convinced I was a lost cause lol
