David had considered moving back to London but decided to stay in NYC. He was concerned about being too recognisable in London & preferred the anonymity NY offered. His last trip to London was in 2014 shortly after his cancer diagnosis. He made a nostalgic tour of his old homes & haunts & wanted his daughter Lexi to see where he had come from. Gone but never forgotten.
711honved he also visited London on 7th July 13 to visit this exhibition at the V&A .I know because I was one of the first on that day and the staff talked about it. He'd left before we entered and was apparently 'very pleased' with it.
Cool. I would like to have seen some of Bowies NY during the 70s. Even if a ton of it is now gone. Maybe next time? True story. I am a native New Yorker but moved upstate in 2002 close to where Bowie had his country home. One day I went to work out at the small local gym we have up here and who do I see on the treadmill? None other than Bowie himself! I smiled and gave him a nod. He did the same. Then we went about our individual workouts. About ten minutes later "Lets Dance" came on the stereo. He didnt even bat an eye. Like it wasnt even playing. Haha.
The Angry French Existentialist (AKA The Frenchistentialist) i wonder ( a little) if he'd do the same after the invention of the smartphone/camera? Cheers for the image though.
As a life long Bowie fan, really appreciate the opportunity to experience or explore his every daily life and his hang outs etc.Still coming to terms with the loss off Bowie, still surreal. Thankyou
Thanks I've long been curious to see Bowie's New York haunts as I know he loved the city. Saw him live in 87. When the lights went down the crowd ran to the stage. The surge pushed me to front centre a few feet from the stage. Great show, despite what the critics said of Glass Spider. For a while I lived in London, not far from Bromley where Bowie once lived. Got on my bicycle one day and visited some of the places he lived and frequented there. His very small and ordinary childhood suburban home and some pubs where he drank and played. In London I visited the street where they shot the Ziggy album cover. There's still a red phone booth there tho I don't know if its the one he's pictured in on the album sleeve. Years later I would see "David Bowie Is" at London's V&A. The stark, austere, Thin White Duke attire oozed magic and mystery amongst a kaliedescope of iconic costumes. I encourage people to visit this extraordinary exhibition now in New York. Like the rest of the planet I was shocked at his passing. I shed tears, thanked him for all he gave us and bade him goodbye and later was in quiet awe at the artistic way he took his leave of the world.
I often look at his old home on Lafayette as I pass. I was there the other day and thinking Bowie would be sitting on the outside patio with all these people hustling about and not knowing he was up there.
+Urbanist thank you for this video - it's well done but too short ... I wish it were longer. - can't see or hear of David Bowie without tears in my eyes.
I'm so happy you enjoyed it. and don't worry, there will be a part 2 in berlin one day soon. Also you can check out my much longer Facebook Live video tour of the exhibition: facebook.com/UrbanistLive/videos/2161930584034674
It would have to be his recordings at Sigma Sound and Live album at tge Tower Theater. All in my hometown of Philly. I finally saw him in concert in 1991 for Sound and Vision. Loved him. I won't be in NYC until the end of July and I'm angry that I will miss this exhibit..
Saw that exhibit at Brooklyn Museum couple years ago, planned my visit around it having missed it in Chicago a couple years prior. Very nicely presented. Play It Loud at the Met was another good one.
Cool video i know us Londoners would have loved him to come back to England but i can see why he didnt and the main thing was he was happy and that's the main thing, he would of loved the fact that he could stroll about and visit the places that he wanted too without getting hassle. By the way can you tell me where you got your shades they are so cool, in fact im pretty sure Bowie would of loved them too ⚡⚡⚡

Thanks for this.. wish I had seen this before travelling halfway across the world to NY to see David Bowie is (which I loved) though I recognised most of the places it would have added to the experience if I’d known dB ate or drank coffee there
my pleasure! and yea there's something special about knowing exactly what david bowie enjoyed at these places. hope you get to return! there's also plenty of Bowie history in Berlin which I hope to cover soon
The Linthicums. You must not be familiar with this area, 'cause NYC is so diverse, you can be the height of fashion for pennies on the dollar. Sorry to say you're wrong about that.
Nice video. But you barely looked at anything in the exhibit for very long. Why the rush? I was in there for 5 hours. I stared at the Scary Monsters cover art for 20 minutes alone.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I should have mentioned this in the video, but this was a companion video to a full live-video I did of the exhibition, it's much longer and in detail. You can check it out here: facebook.com/UrbanistLive/videos/2161930584034674/
ok I look forward to seeing the one in England 👍 he played all over Britain to get known, places like Manchester and Glasgow where he played legendary gigs that changed peoples lives. also what about his time in LA 😉
David Bowie is English and if you want to understand him properly you need to make a film in England. live here, New York has very little to do with Bowie it was just a place he lived for awhile, the way Americans claim David Bowie as one of their own is ridiculous, everything about him is English through and through as in culture.
One of my favored singers and performers. RIP David Bowie.

Wow man, like that was so
awesomely mundane
New York is only awesome if one is rich. Otherwise, very much the haves and have-nots.

Cool video. Is your glasses photochromatic?
haha it isn't. it's just reflective lenses
Just recently Iman sold their NYC apartment! No doubt that was hard for her to do but maybe harder for her to remain there...
Great Exhibition seen at V&A London, Bowie Rules OK.

Complimenti ottimo video... grazie

Bowie only met Warhol once!
Bowie was a serious Lucefarian
one of the many reasons he's awesome
Bowie went to Berlin in the mid seventies with Iggy Pop and Lou Reed to kick drugs.
And record his Berlin Trilogy, Low, Heroes and Lodger
Warhol never “hung out” with Bowie, he didn’t like him!
And his warnings of fascism came true
The video ends too soon
Terrible song choice too, I remember David himself stating that his least favorite song is Rebel Rebel.
I much prefer London.
This all wrong Bowie was in NY before he met iman

don't you worry I intend on making a video of his life in England. And also another one of his time in Berlin. This is but one video in a trilogy ;)

The fact is, Bowie preferred the US over England.
