What an astounding man! Please get all his memories down in a tape recorder....he has lived an amazing life in an amazing time ...just wow. Creativity is a life force.
The number of artists who lived to a great age and were mentally sharp right up to the end is too large for there not to be some causation. It seems to be mainly visual artists. Some writers, but mostly artists.
To all young artists who are watching this… Do not ever give up on your craft…don’t set it down and say you’ll pick it back up later because before you know it later is here. Do what you have passion for not what society thinks you should do. If you love doing art then figure out a way to do it and get paid for it. God, sometimes I wish I could turn back the clock.
Craig and Wayne, let your dad know that he is greatly admired and appreciated. (I related to him and his life and work very much. I am a 75 year old painter (former architect, former biologist). I have painted all my life since knee high.) I hope he remains healthy and happy a long time to come. He seems like a "cool" guy. Best to all. Thanks for sharing.
while everyone seems focused on bio-hacking and the next drug, it feels like "art" and/or creating is a ticket to a long and healthy life. great video.
@highfades2594 I think finding your passion is the ticket to the long and healthy life. What makes you spring out of your bed each morning and can't wait to do? Sure there's a journey. But life is the journey so instead of complaining about it, smile and say well, why did that happen now? When you find your passion, the path becomes less muddled, people random or otherwise seem to turn up and ideas/dreams/ turn into physical form. Never give up on your dreams because of someone else's limitations.
I think people in that era and in the US especially had a real freedom. A new world, where you can follow your passions. Perhaps this new generation is also in that era…
Mr Joe Barnes is a vision of vitality for a man almost 100 years old. He has such fluidity, clear thought, and brilliant eloquence in the way he talks, moves, and paints. I want to be like Mr Barnes if I should ever get to 99 years old. What a beautiful video of a true lifelong artist. I guess that is the key to a long and healthy life span;-love something you do daily! Love your story, Mr. Barnes, your two boys must be so proud. Thank you, Joshua Charow!
As a young painter myself your videos bring a sense of direction into what hopefully will be my future. I love being able to peak into the lives and studios of these artists and see their personality and warmth shine through your filmography. Thank you so very much for sharing these works. You don’t know how much it means to me
A touching moment when he states that he cannot carry a weapon to kill people. This sensitivity also shows in his work. Thank you Joe and love and greetings from Germany.
This article was amazing. I’m so glad I took the time to read it. I am 73. I had a stroke. I am a painter, but I stop painting. I want to paint and thank you for giving me the wherewithal to paint again I knew I could. I know I can’t hold a brush, but I felt like I was missing something. It’s good to see you with so much joy doing the thing you love thank you for that.
This video made my morning. Joe is an amazing man and an inspiration to us all. Turning 66 recently was beginning to get to me but after watching Joe do what he loves at 99 has given me renewed vitality in my thinking and me made feel much younger again! Thanks also to Joshua for making this and for all the other videos he’s made that I’m about to watch (not all at once I hasten to add🤣). 👍🏻😎
This is a wonderful project. So many wonderful creative people do not get famous to the outside world and fade away. These documentary videos and photographs prevent that from happening. This man is amazing at his age!!
I love this, thank you, such a delight ! As a sixty one year painter/sculptor who loves to write too, I am so inspired by Joe as I've had "some distractions" along my road of life, always living as an artist yet having to adapt mediums, ect depending on other demands.... I've always had the urge and need to create, since I was a tiny child and into my sixth decade the forever large has continued to grow, calling me as a vivacious breath, stirring me even more, a new season of sorts...... Gentlemen I thank you for your time, sharing both an artist's journey and Josh capturing the precious beauty with your eye and conversations..... Wonderful. Craig, Wayne and family, kudos to you also as having a parent or parents that are authentic artists in every one of their cells is a unique journey in itself, usually unconventional and an experience of its own.
This just came up out of the blue on my you tube. What an amazing man, hard to comprehend that he is nearly 100 years old. To think I was feeling at 59 I’m getting old, given me a whole new outlook.
Crazy how it used to happen, you make a painting and enter it into a contest, you win and get funding for an exhibition at an established gallery, someone offers you a studio space and then you just roll right into it. Wish things were as accessible and straightforward as they seemed to be for some people in some moments and contexts, but this genuinely is an amazing story 💚
This man is a living icon in my humble opinion. The things this man has experienced in his lifetime boggle the mind. Truly a blessed individual as he continues to redefine what 'old age' is and isn't. I aspire to be one fraction as vibrant and youthful in my outlook on life as he seems to be at his age, if I get there that is. He is so Zen and content with his life. God bless you, Mr. Barnes.. You're my hero! 🤗🤗
I notice so many artists who paint tend to do it for a very long time and some artists battle real demons in life and don't stay with us long and other artists do it for so long, I think like others it is key to longevity (expressing creativity, doing something you love). I notice this is true for many things but I notice a lot of painters have this longevity! What a sharp, interesting, eloquent man - cannot believe his age! Inspiration.
As an artist I was so inspired watching this incredible man and I will as he says just keep painting I’m not bothered about being famous because bringing joy into people’s life through my work is enough.
I've never seen anyone so well at this age, it is inspiring. I've been witnessed family and friends getting old, most of them are not well, specially their mind and memory.
I have the book! I was surprised how substantial it is. I have only looked at a couple of pages because I just know I'm never going to want it to end. Regards from Indiana!
Josh, your photography is Amazing… The way you interview and capture the artist makes me feel like I know them and yet still want to know more about them… Very nice job. It must be amazing meeting so many interesting people.
I am very grateful to have watched this video today. Joe shared a positive attitude that encourages those who want to chase their dreams of being artists. Thank you, Joe.
At 70 I took up meditative drawing and 12 years later I'm still going strong with art. I draw every day like Joe😊...that and having animals really keeps me going, and I'll bet that Joe walks everywhere. It is that activity and mindfulness that makes us stay young. I hope I'm as strong as him when I reach 99..💖🙏
My god, this man is amazing. My mom is 91 and can out garden me any day of the week. She transforms lawn into gardens and grows roses and tomatoes and everything in between. Her gardening passion has kept her young and active.
What an amazing man! Omg not a single verbal misstep. Just amazing. I celebrate his long life and his art. Congratulations to his sons as well. What a treasure.
Blown away by the beauty of this man and the beauty of how this is shot. Loved reading his sons in the comments too.

Thank you for sharing this story. Many of us seek our vocation in life, and it's not always easy to achieve it. Hearing from someone who has done so, with such calmness and wisdom, is inspiring and allows for reflection. I'm not an artist, but I appreciated the simplicity of the advice: 'Just paint'. Greetings from Chile, Tomás
I so appreciate this series. It is uplifting and inspiring. You have a gift as an interviewer and photographer and I am very grateful to have found your work. The artists you have interviewed bring a certain hope to me. It is both amazing and humbling. Thank you.
This is such an heartwarming film and cinematography of a beautiful soul. He is younger than many soulless youths(includes myself!) in many aspects. I wish to age like him❤
Joshua, Thank you so much for these wonderful films. For, as an artist, they're inspirational, both the subject and how you make them. Hope you keep making them . Greetings from Ireland.
Incredible work, both you, the reporter, and the artist, Joe. Thank you for creating this masterpiece of an interview. Continue to bring light to amazing people and their work. I am so grateful that this came on my feed. ❤🙏🏼
Your channel is one of the most exiting things I found, for years. Love! And what a guy! When I am as fit as he is, when i'm 75, I would be very happy.
This series is incredible. So beautifully filmed, the way you capture each artists unique personality in such a short video is amazing. I could watch these all day
What a wonderful tribute to very interesting person/ artist who doesn't look his age ! And what a studio..a lot of light and space .I greatly appreciate this post !!!!
He acts and talks like 20 years younger than his actual age. He seems to have still boy’s spirit with a help of strong meditational habit of creating visual art. Thank you for this.
Thanks for making this amazing video. It's inspiring! I feel older adults, their skills, experience, and talents are often not well recognized and exposed. Would be nice to see more videos like this.
I am Joe's son Craig and wanted to post a personal thanks for creating this and posting. Thank you Josh
Of course. I feel lucky and honored to have met Joe and photographed him.
What an astounding man! Please get all his memories down in a tape recorder....he has lived an amazing life in an amazing time ...just wow. Creativity is a life force.
Your dad is super cool. How lucky are you!!!
He’s so interesting and you should be photographed next!
@@blossomyourawesome yes lucky... and thank you
Josh, I am Joe’s son Wayne. I am extremely grateful that you made this video about my Dad. It brought tears of joy to my eyes. Thank you so much!
❤
This means the world to me, thank you Wayne. It was an honor to meet, photograph, and spend time with Joe.
@@joshuacharow I grew up around the Barnes family and it was a pleasure seeing Joe still going strong
Lucky man to have such an eclectic cool dad.
Wayne, if you don’t mind answering, where could we find some of your dads art on line to look at??
Joe does not sound like a 99-year-old. His speech is smooth and eloquent. Amazing! What an interesting person he is.
Creation generates brain's plasticity, art is more powerful than any medicine!
@freddyfelipe5047 absolutely!
Likely he’s the type who kept himself active his whole life
The number of artists who lived to a great age and were mentally sharp right up to the end is too large for there not to be some causation. It seems to be mainly visual artists. Some writers, but mostly artists.

Depending on how you play your cards. Art can also lead your mental health spiraling into darkness.

What is most striking to me (amongst many amazing things about him) is his SMILE!!! He’s loving life. What an inspiration!

Joe is a good example of doing what you love and you will live a long and healthy life. He is a sweet soul. ❤️🇨🇦
Talks like a 20 year old, looks like a 50 year old, has the skills and mastery of a 99 year old. This man is brilliant.
