However mentally he felt he had to keep a 'check' on himself. I get the 'stand up' thing though - quite a few who knew him have said that.

I met David Bowie once as I was hiking at Point Reyes National Seashore about 12 years ago. I was stung up pretty badly from stinging nettle at the time, but that's a long story. He asked how I was doing as I was sitting by the trail licking my wounds. He was reserved in an English way, but friendly. He was chunkier than I thought he would be, and his voice was quite distinctive. He had a very kind and concerned aura about him.

My interest in music started there, and had an excellent jump started into good stuff.
