One of my favorite touches in this series is that when one of the brothers goes down, the other _picks him up onto his back_ to shield him from further damage, making his own dodges and defenses more difficult in the process. It's really touching and shows a bit of their relationship through gameplay.
It also allows you to make the game harder by purposefully killing off a bro during boss battles to make attacks more tedious to dodge, and also makes you deal less damage overall (no bros attacks).

I minor thing missed in Bowser's Inside Story is just how briliant Bowser's special moves are. Not only does it give you the proper feel that Bowser is the commander of an army, but the fact that he uses his special moves in his fight against Mario and Luigi in Toadtown is amazing.
Yea dream team was the first time bowser ever referred to Luigi by name, before it was just “green ‘stach” or even “green Mario”, I guess bowser decided to make an exception for 2013 because of the year of Luigi

I'm glad you addressed the loading times & framerate on BiS remake. It really doesn't feel good to play and I had to force myself to finish the remake coming from the original.
You know what, everyone? If you're all listening, I promise I will open my mind more and realize that while I can definitely love the originals while admitting that they have their own faults that the remakes improved upon to justify their existence by not feeling like the same exact thing all over again and show us that even cult classics can need a second version to not repeat what mistakes they made before (like sometimes being too hard for their own good). This also applies to the remakes of Superstar Saga & Bowser's Inside Story (mainly the Bowser Jr.'s Hourney portion), especially Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions (mainly the in-game portion)! Are they perfect? No. But then again, no game is, not even the 2000s Mario RPGs which I'll always love for their stylistic 2D graphics (which I'll never know why people are knocking on), badass soundtracks, gameplay that can be sometimes frustrating but most of the time understanding of what makes RPGs so fun and interesting stories (especially Super Paper Mario which even AntDude reviewed mostly positively)! But I'd take them over the Paper Mario games starting with (and especially) Sticker Star any day! Holy shit, this comment blew up with so many likes! I guess I really grew up from my 20s to my… um, later 20s, and it’s great that we’ll finally get a new Mario & Luigi game, and an original on the Nintendo Switch that will retain what made the 2000s RPGs so funny, well-animated catchy in terms of its sound and just fun to play in general, and yes, nostalgia aside, I’m proud to stand by that claim!)
@@kieranstark7213 I get why BISDX is contentious but SSDX is objectively the superior version and saying otherwise is borderline misleading imo. Art style and music are subjective and the remake makes so many improvements that it makes the original hard to go back to. Exoparadigmgamer, the man you referenced in your comment shares this sentiment. In fact the only thing keeping him from giving it a replace score was the fact that minion quest was so shitty.
With the exception of Bowser’s Minions in the remake, it’s hard to pick one of the two versions which is the superior (I mean, yes, technically and objectively, SSDX is the definitive version, but I have too much of a soft-spot for the GBA version that it’s far more than just the stylistic 2D graphics that makes it impossible not to like it.)

I really love the sprites in Bowser’s Inside Story, the best in the series. Sure, the detail is good in the later games, but something about those more classic sprites just really appeals to me!
I always hated the DS sprites for Mario. He just looks too fat and when he walks it looks like he's dragging himself around. I think the 3DS sprites nailed his bodyshape.
I spent 5 years of my life taking Italian classes in school because I wanted to know what Mario and Luigi were saying in BIS and I later discovered that they were speaking gibberish the whole time
One issue that sprites have is that they make it impossible to upres something. Sprites by nature are completely fixed in resolution. Porting it to a screen with a different resolution is a really hard thing to do as the DS has a resolution of 160-255 which is not a resolution commonly supported. I actually think that is another big reason why the remade Bowser's inside story. To make a version that's easier to port. However after it's monumental failure those plans were dashed.
I like how it's now (almost) after making this entire retrospective only for AntDude to now get Brothership, I can only imagine how it must have felt working on this video and then have the announcement come out like a reward for going through all the games

Funnily enough for me PiT I sadly forgot most of the story, but the ending against Elder Princess Shroob is the MOST rememberable part no matter what, maybe it's Nostalgia for the music I once had no appreciation for, and now appreciate tremendously keeping with me, but when I play PJ... It felt... Forgettable especially since I sadly skipped out on Dream Team...
This is pretty insignificant but I love the art style for the Superstar Saga games. The cover art is always so charming, there’s just something about how Mario and Luigi look in this style that is just so nice.

I loved the little detail that the music in bowsers inside story changed slightly based on whether you were inside or outside of bowser. Like in the pipeyard, bowser would hear normal toad town music, and the bros would hear it with a different soundfont.
Can’t believe you didn’t talk about how FREAKING HARD Partners in Time is. If you do literally every single fight, and master all of the bros items, then MAYBE you have a shot at the at final boss. It’s ridiculously hard.
I own the European version which is considered to be the easier version of the game. And let me say than this game is freakin easy. I never died, and I even went through a challenge in which I never purchased items and bros items, the only ones I had the right to use was those I got from blocks and bonus items from battles and guess what... I NEVER RAN OUT OF THEM! The final boss was also super easy for me, only took me about 15 minutes to deal with and did I even mention I never used copy flowers through the whole game?
I had the european version sadly :( But storytime: In a hypothetical parallel universe I used an R4 card with an amercian rom of the game when I was around ~7-8 years old and I never beat the game (was stuck on the end boss) until 2 years ago. Now this year a few months ago I played the european version and it was too easy tbh especially the bossfight. Without flexing too much, I just deal too much damage with these infinity attacks despite being underleveled
1:14:49 you mentioned dream teaming having an unlockable hard mode, i found recently that bowsers inside story also has a hard mode. you have to do the green shell endless challenge and hit a combo of 150 to get the challenger medal trinket which makes all enemies have 1.5x stats and 2.5x damage.
Wow. I've been playing these games for ages it feels like, with Inside Story being at the top. And I am just finding this out now?? In summer of 2021? Life is so unfair. I still play these games even when I own a switch because for me the 3ds was and still is a beautiful piece of gaming, the ds and 3ds libraries are perfection. I just don't play then nearly as often as I'd like because it became boring and monotonous. But a hard mode would be amazing and get me back into it. So thank you, this is huge help. These games are so good. They are absolute peak Mario for me. The tone, atmosphere, humor, references... it's all perfect. And the art style is my absolute favorite of the franchise
Fun fact, if you're a high enough level, you can actually just freaking tank the bomb and get eaten alive. this happened to me with Luigi on my first playthrough and I didn't know you were actually supposed to die and start with 1 hit point each until years later.

I played superstar saga religiously growing up. I had nothing else to do so I would just play the game and restart it and play it again building hp or pow. I thought building speed meant Mario and Luigi walked faster in the overworld lol. But yeah I remember the bomb blowing up and Mario or Luigi would tank the hit and I thought if both of them could survive then something else would happen. It didn’t. Same for partners in time with the unwinnable shroob fight at the start. I would build pow and get the max number thinking I could beat the 3 shroobs before the ship blew Mario and Luigi up. I could only defeat 2 of the 3.
We get to play as: Mario Green Mario Baby Mario Baby Green Mario Turtle dad Paper Mario *And then a whole bunch of enemies I can’t list as a whole.* (Fawful is still the best villain ever)

Also as generic and old and dusty of a "story" as it is (don't even get me started on the whole save the princess from the beast thing itself) Bowser kidnapping Peach is still technically a story of sorts, I'd rather the series just stay dead and remember it the way it was, I can't even get hype for new (mainline) Mario games these days it's just like, ok, what's new? nothing? thought so whatever then.
I personally don’t care about story in games, I mainly care about the gameplay and mechanics of a game, but I think it’s still important to make sure the fans who ARE invested in stories in games are pleased.

The Mario and Luigi games are some of my favorite rpgs. They’re colorful, filled with personality and are just a joy to play through, I’ve played bowsers inside story, dream team, partners in time, and a little bit of superstar saga and I recommend them all
Seeing these all lined up, watching through completely, you can see how Nintendo started pulling back on allowing 3rd parties to create original characters, which I think is what ultimately killed AlphaDream and will probably kill Paper Mario if they don't change their minds. Origami King fought as hard as it could through Bobby - keep in mind, that wasn't even his real name, because he didn't have a name, he was just a generic bob-omb, because that's all you're allowed to have when you can't create new characters.
@@KrissyBluesThe regulations of not being able to modify existing character designs for Paper Mario still seems like it is applied to AlphaDream since in the remakes, any unique variations and designs in staple Mario series characters like koopa troopas were removed. Some that comes to mind from the SS remake are the designs for the koopa troopas in the airship, the fat koopa troopas that can be knocked down using the firebrand field skill, and that one toad doctor who was outright replaced with a different character.

Yeah but it it's true i played it recently and i had that problem and well in reality i felt like that also happened a little bit on bowser's inside story since it was like only fawful remembered what happened in superstar saga(don't get me wrong this it's just something that didn't feel right but all these games are gems, yeah that includes paper jam)
Honestly this whole series just builds on the brother's character a lot more. They seem competitive but nonetheless they still love each other, going out of their way and even endangering their LIVES for just one another, it's really nice. And I know the first Luigi's Mansion did this too, but sssshhhhh.
Gimmick is inherently implied to be short lived, shows or games that rely on gimmicks often change the gimmick season to season, game to game, etc. Babies are the first step in the long life of a person, inherently implied to be long term, stick around a bit. Comedy explained, thus this joke is killed. Much like a dissection, this specimen is dead, but you may now understand other comedy with a similar premise. It's still so weird to hear the complaint that the Antasma fight was *almost identical* in the tutorial and the penultimate battle, when they shared a single move that is powered up in the second fight. It's really a moot point in the game but *man* is it so weird to hear it talked about as though they were carbon copies when it's *a single move*.
Yeah It's literally a tutorial fight vs the penultimate boss No freaking duh the one attack they have in common would be significantly harder (especially since the darker arena makes it harder to see the bats) Not to mention him COMPLETELY ignoring that Antasma has two new attacks and an ENTIRE GIMMICK OF STEALING DREAMY LUIGI FROM YOU HOW ARE THEY THE SAME FIGHT
imo it's just that seeing antasma's final form in the tutorial kinda cheapens the final form "reveal" at the end of the game. If tutorial antasma just stayed in the bat form the entire issue would have been fixed. Edit: on top of that, the tutorial plays final Antasma's music which I also think is wrong and spoils the drama. They should have stuck with the other boss battle music
Man, this was a pretty good Mario and Luigi retrospective (Though his review with Dream Team was a tiny bit iffy for me). The series honestly hasn't gotten much attention like this from UA-camrs. That attention usually goes towards Paper Mario due to TTYD and the series' current direction causing a split in the fanbase. Hopefully, more people discover this great series. All games (despite my hatred for Paper Jam), deserve a try.
Yea his Dream Team review was defiantly a bit flawed as he was a bit too harsh on the game in my opinion. There's also some great qualities of the game that he failed to acknowledge like some of the later areas being great and original. Also you really can't expect a game as successful as BiS to have the next game exactly capture that success.
Yeah, I feel like he got everything spot on except dream team. It is a little unfair to have Bowser's inside story (a perfect gem) as a standard for the series. I personally adore dream team, and even with all the tutorials, it never felt dull to me. Other than that, I can agree with him on everything else.
My honest thoughts on Dream Team is that the tutorials do make the game’s pacing slower but it doesn’t diminish it as much as he makes it out. Saying that Paper Toad missions ruin the pacing less is unfair imo because those missions straight up bored the hell out of me and felt like I was wasting my time. At least I can buttom mash through tutorials. And I personally think this game has the most replay value partically due to the further customization upon level up, along with the hard mode. There’s so much to do in that game aside from the main story and it’s definitely my most played out of them all. And the updayed models are fine as they stand, honestly I’m fine with the 3D-esque sprites because the previous spritework might’ve had charm, but they were more in play due to hardware limitations. I also don’t get his gripe over the beans and the Bowser variation final boss. You don’t have to search for beans, and Bowser variations as the final boss just seems right and seems like a necessity for this series. It might have piggybacked off of BIS but that’s not a bad thing. It improved a few things, for example Giant X Battles. In my opinion, the game’s length isn’t an issue, because these games are never gonna be a game I attempt to binge in one sitting. And lastly, comparing DT to BIS due to it sheerly following it in it’s footsteps isn’t fair. BIS is an absolute masterpiece and games qualities should be compared to others in its series, but that should never be the sole reason for a game’s low standard. To finish this rant, i think it’s insulting that it was put below Paper Jam, but I’m happy that others seem to agree with some missed points.

Dream Team is still an good game. But the tutorial and the pacing issue are everywhere and makes the game really slow. Probably the slowest game of the series. I'm also not an fan of gyroscopes in this game. Makes my head dizzy.
Notably, the cover art style for the cases where there's just a white background with the characters on it didn't start until Inside Story. PiT's cover art looks a lot like the original Superstar Saga's cover art.
Partners In Time is also my favourite. Maybe I'm a sucker for cute small things but I love the baby bros and playing all 4 of them together is lots of fun (for me at least lol)
With how they handled paper mario the thought of that is beyond depressing. We all know the next mario & luigi rpg is just gonna be another sticker star. I would absolutely love to be proven wrong tho
I'm gonna have to challenge you on an aspect of Dream Team that you never really touch on. For the first 3 titles, Bowser is often the butt of the joke being used and abused by the new big bad of that game. Dream Team broke that cycle that made Bowser actually use and abuse that villain before he got to him. I took it as a return to form for the Koopa King since it's easy to forget that he is supposed to be the bad guy.
Dream Team is so nostalgic!! The music, the title screen everything!! I love it, even though I didn’t actually finish it because back then I was trash at video games.
I actually super love dream team. That may be because it was my first entry in the M&L series, but also because it just seems like legitimately good game all around. If we got "in the final" in dream team, it would be the perfect game in my book.

This saga and Paper Mario are the only turn-based RPGs that I like honestly. Compared to other RPGs, the artstyle makes the characters and the world around them feel so alive. You can actually see the enemies and evade them instead of just start a battle out of nowhere. And the combat itself is not boring, you can defend yourself and even counter attack
FR BRO, the exact reason I downright hate Pokemon. Pokemon is the exact opposite of what u said. The battles start out of no where, the combat is boring, you can't defend yourself or counter attack , u simply press an attack and watch your Pokemon do an attack but not even come in contact with the other Pokemon. I truly do not understand the appeal of Pokemon.
I love the combat system in this game. I love being able to not only select, but execute the attacks in essentially timed minigames. That style is leagues more immersive/fun for me than "Click attack, select enemy to attack, Attack. Whoo."
@@TruTwist Pokemon jumping on you from their hiding spot and trying to kill. Shocking, I know, but this is whole point of random encounters - it's an ambush from the enemies you didn't see. And this is exactly why I hate when we see opponents. At least in SMTV they attack you and mostly faster then you so no real way to ran away... You can defend or counterattack in pokemon. It depends on the moves pokemon have and again, shocking, I know, but animals rarely know ways to protect or counter while battling in the wild, so why would pokemon. Yes, just like it would actually be: animal execute tamer order as it was given. And this feels... Lackluster to you as I understand. But additional timing button pressing nonsense just God's blessings, looks like, lol. Please, if you "don't understand the appeal" of the JRPG genre - go play ton of action adventures where sword "connect" with the enemies, but don't badmouth something that commonly requires actual thinking. Well, that's pretty much apply to everyone in this thread.

Okay, but Mario and Luigi Partners in Time can have my heart. It was my first rpg Mario game and I LOVED it!!! It was wacky and fun and I felt like it held so many secrets! It’s one of my brothers favorites too, if I remember correctly we would fight over who got to play it. XD
Okay having played Dream Team again I’m very confused by what you said about the Antasma fight. You only fight him for like one turn in the beginning. You can hardly call the final battle with him similar. He has one attack that’s similar, but that’s it. Also regarding Luigi’s growth, you seem to have missed how he grows more confident with each giant battle. The thoughts you see when you initiate the final giant fight have changed from “Gotta help big bro!” to “Let’s go, bro!” He no longer sees himself as below Mario, but on an equal footing. And his confident expression on the bottom screen… so good! And even before that with the Zeekeeper, Luigi is doing his best to support Mario to keep him from being blown away, and even after he does, he rallies the other Luiginoids together to form giant Dreamy Luigi, unlike the other times when the Luiginoids just come to him because Starlow pressed the L on his hat. It seems to me that there’s so much detail you missed here, which is pretty disappointing. I think Dream Team is easily the most charming of the Mario and Luigi games because of all those little details. You do have a point saying that they could’ve done more with the dreams and Luigi’s development, but it’s not devoid of growth. To me, the length is inconsequential because it means I get to watch the brothers be charming for longer. There’s so much to see! I could write an essay about it.

An unpopular opinion: I really like the Bowser's Minions/Bowser Jr's Journey games. They act as a fun way to unwind after a difficult boss or a long gaming session.
The absolute most fun I've had with this series was undoubtedly the Giant Luigi battles. I'd do the boss ring over and over again just to replay those fights.

Dream Team may have been my first mario rpg game and I love the giant luigi battles, but that doesn't mean that they weren't good in the first place. They just don't have what the first 2 games had that you love so much. I even feel sad for having played the remakes instead of the originals, because I feel like I have missed something truly special. Dream Team will always have a place in my heart as my first, but at least I can still love the originals for what they are.
I really loved the badges from Bowsers inside story so much! It really makes the player grind more battles just to charge up new combinations to try out
The authentic DS game experience is a game grinding to a halt for 30 minutes when the token mic use comes up, until the machine spirits grace you with the damn thing messing up so hard it works.
I’m so sad that alpha dream went bankrupt, these games were my child hood, I legit cried when I heard about it, I’m never going to forget the memories that these in my opinion amazing games made.

The thing that makes the end of these games sad is that there wasn’t really a game that was justifiably a terrible or bad game they where all games you could have fun with and it’s sad to see them go
I feel like I was the only one to love the minions and bowser Jr journey modes as the story writing in each is incredible and the gameplay is actually a nice distraction from the normal Mario and luigi game. I get that it ain't for everyone but I find building teams satisfying. Sad to see Alpha Dream go bankrupt for one of my most favourite 3DS games.

If you asked me how I felt about this game when I first picked it up, I actually felt the same way as everyone else (being the worst in the series) but when I actually took my time in the game and explored it to its fullest potential, I saw a game that just could not be beat with the amount of detail and care put in it. But also my love of this game probably comes to not playing the original on DS so I can only compare this one to other games in the series rather than what this game used to be.
58:33 IIRC then Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time focuses on the relation between Bowser from the past and Bowser from the current time. The Bowser Jr. in that game is not the Bowser Jr. that is the son of Bowser, but it is Bowser Jr. as in Bowser himself as a kid. So actually we did not get that in M&L:PiT.
Just throwing it out there. Baby Bowser and Bowser Jr. would be super fun. Bowser Jr. has his image of his dad challenged, Baby Bowser encounters someone he can kinda relate to, but deeply envies the support Jr. has compared to him, and Bowser himself is put in the rare for him position of being a sideline observer of something relevant to him. Plus, we would get three Bowsers. Three. That's as much as two and a half twos. And that's wonderful.
Honestly, Dream Team is my favorite game of all of them😅 Followed by inside story ofc But dream team just holds a very spacial place in my heart, most of the stuff you mentioned doesn't really bother me lol
Yeah I remember one time I was playing Mario and Luigi dream team at urban air one time when I was a kid and when I left the place just to find out that I couldn’t find my copy of the game that would be lost in time forever. Also this was day one when I first got the game.

Also a lot of the levels aren't "forgettable" I loved the volcano level with the Bowser ×2 boss battle and walking through a decimated mushroom town, I loved the game and there's so much more good things about it
I loved timing my jumps to the beat of the music in Dream Team also! I guess I loved it so much that one time I spent an hour in Mushrise Park just doing it. That’s an hour of my life I’ll never get back.
Sometimes it surprises me how Partners in Time didn’t get recognized as much. Maybe it’s because it’s a follow-up or maybe because the story is less strong. Personally, I love it. It was also my first M&L game and this game made me love the whole genre. I probably loved this (as a child) because of it’s story that *isn’t* linear and how the game dares to surprise you. I kinda lost that a bit in Dream Team (although that game plays part of my young-adult life). The first 2 games were astonishing if I only were critisizing it based on story. I feel like PiT does this at best because of the world design, that doesn’t let you think ‘I only need to look at the map’. Bowser’s inside story falls into a bit, although the level creativity feels ambitious. Dream Team also didn’t have that many world design surprises. Paper Jam I didn’t play, because it felt generic (no fact, just an opinion). I love story games. A lot of games fall into the linear game design and I feel like M&L games, or games from Alphadream, have that surprising asset, especially at the start of this genre. If Alphadream lives on and goes back to the spirit of the first few designs,. I would love that game already. A fresh story, a fresh design and a fresh new M&L game :D

I have fantasized of a theoretical 6th original mario and Luigi game that is called mario and Luigi glitch hunters where mario and luigi get sucked into a computer when they where settling a dispute between the mushroom kingdom and the mecha kingdom bowser came too they have to work together and midbus came back as mecha midbus. The partner character are 2 star wristbands which are a.i wristband it os essentially Bowser s inside story but Bowser teams up with them bowser briefly gets kind controled so... Any criticism

It would allow for some interesting comedy between the 3. Idk if midbus alone would be enough to make the 3 of them want to purposely team up though. But I guess that would be where certain surprises would in a way force them too can show up. I guess the big thing to figure out is if the bros do end up entering the cyber world from time to time how it would work. And would bowser just be sitting around d doing nothing during this time or would he have to guard the bros from other things forcing them to trust each other, again setting g up for some funny scenes. "You know, I could just easily torch them right now" starlo proceeds to badger him.
My dream Mario & Luigi game would be one in which Mario and Luigi have to partner with... Wario and Waluigi. Can you imagine how awesome and hilarious that would be?

One of my favorite touches in this series is that when one of the brothers goes down, the other _picks him up onto his back_ to shield him from further damage, making his own dodges and defenses more difficult in the process. It's really touching and shows a bit of their relationship through gameplay.
One of the best mechanics in the world. Everything about it is so good!
It also allows you to make the game harder by purposefully killing off a bro during boss battles to make attacks more tedious to dodge, and also makes you deal less damage overall (no bros attacks).

I minor thing missed in Bowser's Inside Story is just how briliant Bowser's special moves are. Not only does it give you the proper feel that Bowser is the commander of an army, but the fact that he uses his special moves in his fight against Mario and Luigi in Toadtown is amazing.
In the secret bossfight vs bowser x he uses his special attacks that he got after the toad town fight too
I love that his "regular" battle theme is more of a boss battle theme than M&L bosses lol

Fun fact, you can technically make that specific fight against Bowser a little easier by not rescuing the Shy Guys.

You know what, everyone? If you're all listening, I promise I will open my mind more and realize that while I can definitely love the originals while admitting that they have their own faults that the remakes improved upon to justify their existence by not feeling like the same exact thing all over again and show us that even cult classics can need a second version to not repeat what mistakes they made before (like sometimes being too hard for their own good). This also applies to the remakes of Superstar Saga & Bowser's Inside Story (mainly the Bowser Jr.'s Hourney portion), especially Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions (mainly the in-game portion)! Are they perfect? No. But then again, no game is, not even the 2000s Mario RPGs which I'll always love for their stylistic 2D graphics (which I'll never know why people are knocking on), badass soundtracks, gameplay that can be sometimes frustrating but most of the time understanding of what makes RPGs so fun and interesting stories (especially Super Paper Mario which even AntDude reviewed mostly positively)! But I'd take them over the Paper Mario games starting with (and especially) Sticker Star any day!

With the exception of Bowser’s Minions in the remake, it’s hard to pick one of the two versions which is the superior (I mean, yes, technically and objectively, SSDX is the definitive version, but I have too much of a soft-spot for the GBA version that it’s far more than just the stylistic 2D graphics that makes it impossible not to like it.)

I really love the sprites in Bowser’s Inside Story, the best in the series. Sure, the detail is good in the later games, but something about those more classic sprites just really appeals to me!
I always hated the DS sprites for Mario. He just looks too fat and when he walks it looks like he's dragging himself around. I think the 3DS sprites nailed his bodyshape.

One issue that sprites have is that they make it impossible to upres something. Sprites by nature are completely fixed in resolution. Porting it to a screen with a different resolution is a really hard thing to do as the DS has a resolution of 160-255 which is not a resolution commonly supported.
I actually think that is another big reason why the remade Bowser's inside story. To make a version that's easier to port. However after it's monumental failure those plans were dashed.
I like how it's now (almost) after making this entire retrospective only for AntDude to now get Brothership, I can only imagine how it must have felt working on this video and then have the announcement come out like a reward for going through all the games

Funnily enough it scored highly in the west on release and sold well, especially as one of the first DS games.
I loved the little detail that the music in bowsers inside story changed slightly based on whether you were inside or outside of bowser. Like in the pipeyard, bowser would hear normal toad town music, and the bros would hear it with a different soundfont.
Can’t believe you didn’t talk about how FREAKING HARD Partners in Time is. If you do literally every single fight, and master all of the bros items, then MAYBE you have a shot at the at final boss. It’s ridiculously hard.
thats because in the english version whitch came out first them gave the enemies to much health. in the Japanese and pal version they toned that down.
I own the European version which is considered to be the easier version of the game. And let me say than this game is freakin easy. I never died, and I even went through a challenge in which I never purchased items and bros items, the only ones I had the right to use was those I got from blocks and bonus items from battles and guess what... I NEVER RAN OUT OF THEM! The final boss was also super easy for me, only took me about 15 minutes to deal with and did I even mention I never used copy flowers through the whole game?

I had the european version sadly :( But storytime: In a hypothetical parallel universe I used an R4 card with an amercian rom of the game when I was around ~7-8 years old and I never beat the game (was stuck on the end boss) until 2 years ago. Now this year a few months ago I played the european version and it was too easy tbh especially the bossfight. Without flexing too much, I just deal too much damage with these infinity attacks despite being underleveled
I remember using cheats to beat the game as a kid, I'm too invested in the story and I gotta cheat to know what happens next
1:14:49 you mentioned dream teaming having an unlockable hard mode, i found recently that bowsers inside story also has a hard mode. you have to do the green shell endless challenge and hit a combo of 150 to get the challenger medal trinket which makes all enemies have 1.5x stats and 2.5x damage.
Wow. I've been playing these games for ages it feels like, with Inside Story being at the top. And I am just finding this out now?? In summer of 2021? Life is so unfair. I still play these games even when I own a switch because for me the 3ds was and still is a beautiful piece of gaming, the ds and 3ds libraries are perfection. I just don't play then nearly as often as I'd like because it became boring and monotonous. But a hard mode would be amazing and get me back into it. So thank you, this is huge help. Guess you learn something new every day.

These games are so good. They are absolute peak Mario for me. The tone, atmosphere, humor, references... it's all perfect. And the art style is my absolute favorite of the franchise
Fun fact, if you're a high enough level, you can actually just freaking tank the bomb and get eaten alive. this happened to me with Luigi on my first playthrough and I didn't know you were actually supposed to die and start with 1 hit point each until years later.

I played superstar saga religiously growing up. I had nothing else to do so I would just play the game and restart it and play it again building hp or pow. I thought building speed meant Mario and Luigi walked faster in the overworld lol. But yeah I remember the bomb blowing up and Mario or Luigi would tank the hit and I thought if both of them could survive then something else would happen. It didn’t.
Same for partners in time with the unwinnable shroob fight at the start. I would build pow and get the max number thinking I could beat the 3 shroobs before the ship blew Mario and Luigi up. I could only defeat 2 of the 3.

Also as generic and old and dusty of a "story" as it is (don't even get me started on the whole save the princess from the beast thing itself) Bowser kidnapping Peach is still technically a story of sorts, I'd rather the series just stay dead and remember it the way it was, I can't even get hype for new (mainline) Mario games these days it's just like, ok, what's new? nothing? thought so whatever then.
I personally don’t care about story in games, I mainly care about the gameplay and mechanics of a game, but I think it’s still important to make sure the fans who ARE invested in stories in games are pleased.

The Mario and Luigi games are some of my favorite rpgs. They’re colorful, filled with personality and are just a joy to play through, I’ve played bowsers inside story, dream team, partners in time, and a little bit of superstar saga and I recommend them all
i recommend playing BIS last for sure though, because that game sets the standard for the entire franchise.

Seeing these all lined up, watching through completely, you can see how Nintendo started pulling back on allowing 3rd parties to create original characters, which I think is what ultimately killed AlphaDream and will probably kill Paper Mario if they don't change their minds. Origami King fought as hard as it could through Bobby - keep in mind, that wasn't even his real name, because he didn't have a name, he was just a generic bob-omb, because that's all you're allowed to have when you can't create new characters.
What killed Alphadream was low profits and strange corporate decisions.

@@KrissyBluesThe regulations of not being able to modify existing character designs for Paper Mario still seems like it is applied to AlphaDream since in the remakes, any unique variations and designs in staple Mario series characters like koopa troopas were removed. Some that comes to mind from the SS remake are the designs for the koopa troopas in the airship, the fat koopa troopas that can be knocked down using the firebrand field skill, and that one toad doctor who was outright replaced with a different character.
One of the reasons I love this series is not only the creative characters,but also the new bosses.also I love how in most of the games bowser isn’t the main villain and it’s someone like fawful

Gimmick is inherently implied to be short lived, shows or games that rely on gimmicks often change the gimmick season to season, game to game, etc. Babies are the first step in the long life of a person, inherently implied to be long term, stick around a bit. Comedy explained, thus this joke is killed. Much like a dissection, this specimen is dead, but you may now understand other comedy with a similar premise. It's still so weird to hear the complaint that the Antasma fight was *almost identical* in the tutorial and the penultimate battle, when they shared a single move that is powered up in the second fight. It's really a moot point in the game but *man* is it so weird to hear it talked about as though they were carbon copies when it's *a single move*.

imo it's just that seeing antasma's final form in the tutorial kinda cheapens the final form "reveal" at the end of the game. If tutorial antasma just stayed in the bat form the entire issue would have been fixed.
Edit: on top of that, the tutorial plays final Antasma's music which I also think is wrong and spoils the drama. They should have stuck with the other boss battle music

Man, this was a pretty good Mario and Luigi retrospective (Though his review with Dream Team was a tiny bit iffy for me). The series honestly hasn't gotten much attention like this from UA-camrs. That attention usually goes towards Paper Mario due to TTYD and the series' current direction causing a split in the fanbase. Hopefully, more people discover this great series. All games (despite my hatred for Paper Jam), deserve a try.
Yea his Dream Team review was defiantly a bit flawed as he was a bit too harsh on the game in my opinion. There's also some great qualities of the game that he failed to acknowledge like some of the later areas being great and original. Also you really can't expect a game as successful as BiS to have the next game exactly capture that success.
Yeah, I feel like he got everything spot on except dream team. It is a little unfair to have Bowser's inside story (a perfect gem) as a standard for the series. I personally adore dream team, and even with all the tutorials, it never felt dull to me. Other than that, I can agree with him on everything else.
My honest thoughts on Dream Team is that the tutorials do make the game’s pacing slower but it doesn’t diminish it as much as he makes it out. Saying that Paper Toad missions ruin the pacing less is unfair imo because those missions straight up bored the hell out of me and felt like I was wasting my time. At least I can buttom mash through tutorials. And I personally think this game has the most replay value partically due to the further customization upon level up, along with the hard mode. There’s so much to do in that game aside from the main story and it’s definitely my most played out of them all. And the updayed models are fine as they stand, honestly I’m fine with the 3D-esque sprites because the previous spritework might’ve had charm, but they were more in play due to hardware limitations. I also don’t get his gripe over the beans and the Bowser variation final boss. You don’t have to search for beans, and Bowser variations as the final boss just seems right and seems like a necessity for this series. It might have piggybacked off of BIS but that’s not a bad thing. It improved a few things, for example Giant X Battles. In my opinion, the game’s length isn’t an issue, because these games are never gonna be a game I attempt to binge in one sitting. And lastly, comparing DT to BIS due to it sheerly following it in it’s footsteps isn’t fair. BIS is an absolute masterpiece and games qualities should be compared to others in its series, but that should never be the sole reason for a game’s low standard. To finish this rant, i think it’s insulting that it was put below Paper Jam, but I’m happy that others seem to agree with some missed points.
Not to mention just getting details flat out *wrong*
The two antasma battles aren't even remotely similar outside of sharing one attack. I don't understand how he just ignored that the final fight had *two* unique gimmicks
Dream Team is still an good game. But the tutorial and the pacing issue are everywhere and makes the game really slow. Probably the slowest game of the series. I'm also not an fan of gyroscopes in this game. Makes my head dizzy.
Notably, the cover art style for the cases where there's just a white background with the characters on it didn't start until Inside Story. PiT's cover art looks a lot like the original Superstar Saga's cover art.
And while it went away with Brotherships box art it’s app icon follows it!
Partners in Time was my personal favorite. The interactions between the 2x2 bros and the general gameplay always stood out to me.

I'm gonna have to challenge you on an aspect of Dream Team that you never really touch on.
For the first 3 titles, Bowser is often the butt of the joke being used and abused by the new big bad of that game.
Dream Team broke that cycle that made Bowser actually use and abuse that villain before he got to him.
I took it as a return to form for the Koopa King since it's easy to forget that he is supposed to be the bad guy.
Dream Team is so nostalgic!! The music, the title screen everything!! I love it, even though I didn’t actually finish it because back then I was trash at video games.

This saga and Paper Mario are the only turn-based RPGs that I like honestly. Compared to other RPGs, the artstyle makes the characters and the world around them feel so alive. You can actually see the enemies and evade them instead of just start a battle out of nowhere. And the combat itself is not boring, you can defend yourself and even counter attack
FR BRO, the exact reason I downright hate Pokemon. Pokemon is the exact opposite of what u said. The battles start out of no where, the combat is boring, you can't defend yourself or counter attack , u simply press an attack and watch your Pokemon do an attack but not even come in contact with the other Pokemon. I truly do not understand the appeal of Pokemon.
I love the combat system in this game. I love being able to not only select, but execute the attacks in essentially timed minigames. That style is leagues more immersive/fun for me than "Click attack, select enemy to attack, Attack. Whoo."

And this is exactly why I hate when we see opponents. At least in SMTV they attack you and mostly faster then you so no real way to ran away...
You can defend or counterattack in pokemon. It depends on the moves pokemon have and again, shocking, I know, but animals rarely know ways to protect or counter while battling in the wild, so why would pokemon.
Yes, just like it would actually be: animal execute tamer order as it was given. And this feels... Lackluster to you as I understand. But additional timing button pressing nonsense just God's blessings, looks like, lol.
Please, if you "don't understand the appeal" of the JRPG genre - go play ton of action adventures where sword "connect" with the enemies, but don't badmouth something that commonly requires actual thinking.

I got so much nostalgia from hearing ‘The Finale’ in bowsers inside story. I was weirdly surprised as to how nostalgic it was though.
Okay, but Mario and Luigi Partners in Time can have my heart. It was my first rpg Mario game and I LOVED it!!! It was wacky and fun and I felt like it held so many secrets! It’s one of my brothers favorites too, if I remember correctly we would fight over who got to play it. XD
Okay having played Dream Team again I’m very confused by what you said about the Antasma fight. You only fight him for like one turn in the beginning. You can hardly call the final battle with him similar. He has one attack that’s similar, but that’s it.
Also regarding Luigi’s growth, you seem to have missed how he grows more confident with each giant battle. The thoughts you see when you initiate the final giant fight have changed from “Gotta help big bro!” to “Let’s go, bro!” He no longer sees himself as below Mario, but on an equal footing. And his confident expression on the bottom screen… so good!
And even before that with the Zeekeeper, Luigi is doing his best to support Mario to keep him from being blown away, and even after he does, he rallies the other Luiginoids together to form giant Dreamy Luigi, unlike the other times when the Luiginoids just come to him because Starlow pressed the L on his hat.
It seems to me that there’s so much detail you missed here, which is pretty disappointing. I think Dream Team is easily the most charming of the Mario and Luigi games because of all those little details.
You do have a point saying that they could’ve done more with the dreams and Luigi’s development, but it’s not devoid of growth.
To me, the length is inconsequential because it means I get to watch the brothers be charming for longer. There’s so much to see! I could write an essay about it.

Dream Team may have been my first mario rpg game and I love the giant luigi battles, but that doesn't mean that they weren't good in the first place. They just don't have what the first 2 games had that you love so much. I even feel sad for having played the remakes instead of the originals, because I feel like I have missed something truly special. Dream Team will always have a place in my heart as my first, but at least I can still love the originals for what they are.

I loved Bowser's inside story, when I tried playing it again on my 3ds the train battle with the bad mic on the 3ds made the game almost unbeatable.
The authentic DS game experience is a game grinding to a halt for 30 minutes when the token mic use comes up, until the machine spirits grace you with the damn thing messing up so hard it works.
I didn't have that when I play the remake, but again that's just me
I’m so sad that alpha dream went bankrupt, these games were my child hood, I legit cried when I heard about it, I’m never going to forget the memories that these in my opinion amazing games made.

The thing that makes the end of these games sad is that there wasn’t really a game that was justifiably a terrible or bad game they where all games you could have fun with and it’s sad to see them go
I feel like I was the only one to love the minions and bowser Jr journey modes as the story writing in each is incredible and the gameplay is actually a nice distraction from the normal Mario and luigi game. I get that it ain't for everyone but I find building teams satisfying. Sad to see Alpha Dream go bankrupt for one of my most favourite 3DS games.

If you asked me how I felt about this game when I first picked it up, I actually felt the same way as everyone else (being the worst in the series) but when I actually took my time in the game and explored it to its fullest potential, I saw a game that just could not be beat with the amount of detail and care put in it.
But also my love of this game probably comes to not playing the original on DS so I can only compare this one to other games in the series rather than what this game used to be.

The Bowser Jr. in that game is not the Bowser Jr. that is the son of Bowser, but it is Bowser Jr. as in Bowser himself as a kid. So actually we did not get that in M&L:PiT.

Baby Bowser and Bowser Jr. would be super fun. Bowser Jr. has his image of his dad challenged, Baby Bowser encounters someone he can kinda relate to, but deeply envies the support Jr. has compared to him, and Bowser himself is put in the rare for him position of being a sideline observer of something relevant to him.
Plus, we would get three Bowsers. Three. That's as much as two and a half twos. And that's wonderful.
The original superstar saga is one of my favourite games of all time. It’s just truly perfect.

Sometimes it surprises me how Partners in Time didn’t get recognized as much. Maybe it’s because it’s a follow-up or maybe because the story is less strong. Personally, I love it. It was also my first M&L game and this game made me love the whole genre. I probably loved this (as a child) because of it’s story that *isn’t* linear and how the game dares to surprise you. I kinda lost that a bit in Dream Team (although that game plays part of my young-adult life).
The first 2 games were astonishing if I only were critisizing it based on story. I feel like PiT does this at best because of the world design, that doesn’t let you think ‘I only need to look at the map’. Bowser’s inside story falls into a bit, although the level creativity feels ambitious. Dream Team also didn’t have that many world design surprises. Paper Jam I didn’t play, because it felt generic (no fact, just an opinion).
I love story games. A lot of games fall into the linear game design and I feel like M&L games, or games from Alphadream, have that surprising asset, especially at the start of this genre. If Alphadream lives on and goes back to the spirit of the first few designs,. I would love that game already. A fresh story, a fresh design and a fresh new M&L game :D

Could you imagine a new game in this series going with the super star saga remake art style, really well made 2d backgrounds with amazing lighting, IN HD!! Would have been great. I can still hope someday this series get another game, for now, these 5 games will easily be treasured by me.
I have fantasized of a theoretical 6th original mario and Luigi game that is called mario and Luigi glitch hunters where mario and luigi get sucked into a computer when they where settling a dispute between the mushroom kingdom and the mecha kingdom bowser came too they have to work together and midbus came back as mecha midbus. The partner character are 2 star wristbands which are a.i wristband it os essentially Bowser s inside story but Bowser teams up with them bowser briefly gets kind controled so... Any criticism

It would allow for some interesting comedy between the 3. Idk if midbus alone would be enough to make the 3 of them want to purposely team up though. But I guess that would be where certain surprises would in a way force them too can show up. I guess the big thing to figure out is if the bros do end up entering the cyber world from time to time how it would work. And would bowser just be sitting around d doing nothing during this time or would he have to guard the bros from other things forcing them to trust each other, again setting g up for some funny scenes. "You know, I could just easily torch them right now" starlo proceeds to badger him.
My dream Mario & Luigi game would be one in which Mario and Luigi have to partner with... Wario and Waluigi. Can you imagine how awesome and hilarious that would be?
