Gives me goosebumps. The story he is telling is touching. Garth creates such an atmosphere. Richard is singing in another dimension. One of my favorites on this gem of an album. This song sends shivers down my back.
This song has always moved me most. These guys just do it for me, wholeheartedly... I am forever grateful to their existence, for they have shaped mine tremendously.
As I lie recovering from knee replacement,my mood swings back to my youth. At 62 I have . always been transfixed by the beauty of this well rounded group. Tears fall from my pain and dry as the lyrics slide by
Hah.... I'm 62 as well. We are in the same time-capsule.... This song reminds me of the boy who lived next door and died young. His name was Gary Lloyd. A really nice kid. He'd put his head in my window and ask 'Hi Steve. What are you doing?'
I've been waiting for years for someone to post this classic Band song ! No need to have any pictures or video with it....the words and tune paint an indelible image. MANY, MANY THANKS !!!!!
Ronnie Hawkins' assessment of Garth Hudson's musical impact on his band after Garth joined forces with the Hawks back in the day: "I don't know what style that is he's playing. It sure as hell ain't rock-n-roll, but it works!" This song would be another observation along those lines.
'Little John was stung by a snake.... ooooooover by the lake!!!' What a great tune! Live Cahoots, they're 'difficult' album! Shame they never played any of the songs live :/
Check out Garth's "Canadian Celebration of The Band" 2010 cd. All Canadian performers produced by Garth and with Garth playing on every selection --- described as Garth's eclectic selection of favorite Band songs. Beautiful.
Full disclosure: The Band is my favorite band. That said, this song sucks the big one. But Richard Manuel is still able to move heaven and earth with his soulful singing.
@@terrytalk8047 Come on. "It looked like he's really, really hurt / He was lying in the dirt" is not the pinnacle of storytelling. This song isn't an abomination, but it's only listenable because The Band are so good they can squeeze juice out of a rock, but this is a rock.
+mojobone At first I didn't agree with you about Richard Manuel being the lead vocalist on The Moon Struck One But after some research about who sung what in The Band I stand corrected, I think.. When I listen to Stagefright I know it's Rick singing and yet The moon Struck One also sounds like Rick. If i'm wrong and I probably am then I think that I might need a hearing aid. But it sounds great to me whoever it is that's singing.
+mojobone PLEASE tell me there isn't much of a difference between Rick and Richard's voices. I think they are very similar. If not then I'm completely NUT'S!!!!!...
+TownesJames # 1 fan i hear you-sometimes it's like richard, rick and levon share the same vocal chords... took me ages to figure out who was lead on 'rocking chair'... one more thing to love about the band
So impressive, still after 52 years. A true masterpiece. I still have the album.

An all too often overlooked Masterpiece..
Cahoots still ranks as one of my all time fav records I got a hold of a new copy back in august of 71!
Without a doubt the most underrated song from the Band, on their most underrated Album.
Been a fan from the start and can never get through this song without tears.
I just listened to it for the first time and I can't stop crying.

Hello from Northern Finland....❤
i have not heard this in so long.My brother who has passed on now use to play it all the time.In that era on 45's.
Garth Hudson was The Bands secret weapon in keeping every song origianl, you never knew what sound he would come up with next.
twinoak170 in this song Garth uses a pipe organ he made out of pipes rescued from a church organ
And thats saying alot considering the level of quality of the others .
It IS Richard Manuel. His and Danko's timbres were the same but there's a little more grit and sadness in Richard's voice.

Great songwriting and vocal delivery. Garth’s keyboards sets a sublime mood. Dark and reflective, one of their best in that genre.

What a great tune! Live Cahoots, they're 'difficult' album! Shame they never played any of the songs live :/

@dkvampster it's richard manuel brah. sounds like danko but, it's richard manuel. sorry.
❤❤❤❤❤
Super!
Yep. A little work of genius on a very uneven album by the boys. Thanks
song of my life? maybe...
Cahoots is as good as Music from the big pink.
this must surely inspired Bruce Springsteens Spirits In The Night, feels a little similar.
naw was made way before that tune was written...id say the band inspired him for sure tho like everyone else
if you like this song- listen to "spirits in the night" by Bruce Springsteen.
Bruce waz OK but cant hold a candle to THE BAND
exactly what i was thinking last time i heard this, springsteen was clearly influenced not just by this song, but the band in general as well
Shivers…and Chicken Skin.
Full disclosure: The Band is my favorite band. That said, this song sucks the big one. But Richard Manuel is still able to move heaven and earth with his soulful singing.
Yes, yes, and yes. This song should never have seen daylight imho. Take this song away and the album as a whole improves.
I disagree completely. This haunting performance and song are at the pinnacle of story telling.
“Sucks”? And this is your favorite band? What about the song or performance bothers you?

@dkvampster horrible troll attempt. i am a Band connoisseur, you fail.
To the comment below- All The Band stuff are Masterpieces !!
R. Danko has a TERRIFIC voice.!!!!!
+TownesJames # 1 fan i agree on both points... tho this is richard manuel singing...

+mojobone I DON'T need a hearing aid. It is Richard Manuel singing. Glad that's sorted. It would have kept me up all night.
