I was an art-major student at Bakersfield, CA In 1970 when I first heard John Renbourn's album, The Lady and the Unicorn. The instructor would play music in class and put this on the turntable for us to listen. What a great guitarist and musician he was and will be missed.
I first heard him around that time, as well. Although, first I heart the group and went looking for the musicians. My daughter and son and law have kept a turntable, so I"ve given them all my Pentangle, Burt Jansch and John Renbourn albuns. The beat goes on.
Absolutely gutted about the death of John Renbourn. One of the best technical, classical, blues, medieval guitar players and songwriters ever to walk this earth. I was lucky enough to see him live in 2012 at the Mac theater in Birmingham, right at the front, row A. (I filmed it) ... Blew me away ! RIP to a legend!
A well deserved compliment there. I had breakfast with him last year in Haverhill and saw him play on 10th March last in St Neots in one of his last performances. I had a good chat with him afterwards. There was no genre of music he touched that he did not adorn.
Another small piece of my heart flew to Heaven today. One of my dearest friends (I met him once, but listened to him a billion times) took it up there. Sleep well, John.
It's like I grew up with John hearing so much of his music at the young age of 15. What an influence He and Bert Jansch were. Both gentle Souls are united again.
In my writing and playing i hear the influences of many greats but these exceptional men taught me what a guitar real can sound like wow! I have many electric guitars and muck more acoustic still prefer playing acoustic even in Jazz. C7 FLT 5 and Happy Modulations! lol
John Renbourn was an outstanding guitar player. I've loved all his recordings and I wish he had lived longer. I could listen to his music all day long!
This is what music is meant to be. John was a great musician and fortunately with him there were a few more who stayed on the real musical road. In the late 1960s it all seemed to be going great and then came that godforsaken pop music with its glamor and glitter and it has never gotten better with folklore, with our society, our dreams for a better world half a century before it now dawns that the earth is up. Fortunately, I can feed on melodies and original lived-in versions like yours. May you dwell forever in the enchanted garden
I met John years ago with Pentangle at the Troubadour in Hollywood. How he was so good then and continued getting better which amazes me till this day. Bert and John reunited in Heaven. Plays with the Angels now....
I am totally gutted by the passing of John Renbourn. No one has ever inspired me like he did. A true musical genius, and a legend. I had the pleasure of seeing him perform twice, and I was witness to absolute magik! I met and talked with him on both those occasions. He was a true gent, he even commented on my dragon fly earrings. Such a lovely man. Rest in Peace John, your music will live on.
We don't have a musical history as rich as yours here in America. You are truly blessed.Ive just recently discovered this music. And I cant get enough...
Miles Davis, the Gershwins, Dave Brubeck, Cole Porter, Ella Fitzgerald, Chic Corea, Charles Ives, Stephen Sondheim, Leonard Bernstein.... just the first few of many names that spring to mind.
Gwyllm: Thanks for re-posting this! I was fortunate to have heard John and Bert together @ the Freight and Salvage, Berkeley, CA. Didn't realize Swarbrick was on this cut...heard him once w/ Fairport @ Croperdy, UK. Last night I discovered Swarb and Thompson playing some reels on You Tube...worth sussing out.
Many thanks! Swarb is not in this recording, where John is accompanied by Tony Roberts, flute and Don Harper, viola. He (DS) is on many tracks in side A of the original LP, though.
Saw him the summer before he died. He was very reluctant to play the gig we are told. Pre 9991 I booked him twice at the Birminghsm Guitar Club. Is it Ray Warleigh who plays this beautiful flute on this track?
God blessed this man with such talent to come thru with his special sound like no other I have heard..such an inspiration even in my Jazz licks. Long time fan from the 60's
I had the great fortune to see him once solo and meet/chat with him after the show. He signed my vinyl copy of his first solo LP (1965). Then I was extremely lucky to attend the Pentangle reunion concert in London in summer 2008. I have all their works on vinyl, both solo and collectively. Majestic stuff. Sad that both John and Burt are now gone.
Bar none never heard such a version that takes me on a trip to the past....Come travel on this journey with John's beautiful piece along with Flautist Ray Warleigh and friends.........Jazzlaro
SOUL + TALENT from GOD = a gift to be shared and will warm the hearts of millions for centuries to come. Thank You John you play for God now as one of his top musical Angels. You changed my musical direction on my guitar 1966
John Renbourn is amazing - never got to see him in person though. However, I did manage to see Bert Jansch, Martin Carthy and Dave Swarbrick - all at The Tower in Winchester in Hampshire, England. Just amazing talent.
Tried teaching myself this style of guitar playing back in the 80s. Back then it was known as "Folk-baroque". Listened to music from Davey Graham, Bert Jansch, and Martin Carthy. I think this my favorite arrangement of this song.
Agree! Hey, you should check my channel. I saw John Renbourn with Wizz Jones two years ago and filmed a couple of songs. Also, I'm a medieval/castle enthusiast. Have a fair few videos of my trips you may enjoy. :)

A gorgeous arrangement. Tony Roberts (flute) is a name I rarely see. He played on the Ship of Folks album, but I've not encountered him elsewhere. Does anyone reading this know what else he's played on?
Tony Robert's was part of the John Renbourn Group, in all their recordings (try A Maid in Bedlam and The Enchanted Garden). He is also playing in some of his solo albums, among which The Black Baloon stands as unmissable piece of music

Patrick Clerkin A great story there friend. :)
Patrick Clerkin
@@patrickclerkin7874 What can I say you were so fortunate or even blessed to know John. His music and what he did with Pentangle will live for ever!
I saw him with Stephan Grossman perform live at McCabe's Guitar Shop in 1979. It was a musical experience I'll never forget.
Another small piece of my heart flew to Heaven today. One of my dearest friends (I met him once, but listened to him a billion times) took it up there. Sleep well, John.
fabcillo You put it perfectly.
Mine fractured as comprehended, but thank you for sharing so gently. I just wanted to hear this, I hadn't heard.
share your thoughts, very well put
fabcillo Music of understated brilliance and uniqueness. He was a creator, not a mimicker.
Met him a few times and was a really nice guy. My ultimate acoustic guitar influence. The best. R.I.P.

How lovely to hear this music from a true master of his trade…we were so fortunate to be young in the 60s and 70s , real music then.
John Renbourn was an outstanding guitar player. I've loved all his recordings and I wish he had lived longer. I could listen to his music all day long!

Few bits of music bring tears to my eyes as John's and Bert's. What gifted men! What legacies!
We are all here, but a flash in time, but some of us, send out, cosmic waves, of wonderful sound, that reverberates, into infinity...RIP Sir.

John the enigmatic scintillating hermit continues to light my path. Gratitude abounding
Around 1970 ,"The Lady and The Unicorn" brought me back to my roots musically. Thank you, Sir John!
Love the way John plays this old tune with VIGOR!!
Such a beautiful version of this wonderful song

This is one of the most powerful musical experience for a long time.
perhaps one of the best British folk guitarists ever. I still have all his albums. Saw him often with Pentangle.
