the FPS-based ones are really not my thing. cramming a game with every boom-boom you can think of just looks like a clickbait for 12 years old to me. If i want to shoot at stuff there's probably better than a tower defense, and if i want to play a tower defense... well i probably want to play something less heavy handed. If everything is exploding all the time i... might want something more relaxed. I'm mostly interested in ORX, i like the carcassone-like overworld, that seems pretty interesting, Rail defender also for the originality factor, and mob factory might be nice. I'm kind of surprised you didn't give a tiny shoutout to Kingdoms, the "1D" version of thronefall if we can say so. it feels really similar.
@@krishanuphukan80 I'm not too familiar with World in Conflict. Battle for Middle Earth is pretty unique but if you haven't heard there's a fan remake being worked on.
I always loved playing Starcraft 1 as a TD kind of game. Build up my defenses, gather resources, and let the enemies attack my base, slowly build up an army to counter attack with in 1 big swoop. (give myself unlimited resources cheat codes) Would love to see a TD game like this, even if no counter attack.
Exactly what I'm looking for! I cannot believe someone hasn't made something similar. I played Warcraft 3 Frozen Throne for too many years and still find myself going back at times. I just want something similar but with modern graphics and updates and cool things. You'd think there would be hundreds out there but after months of searching I can't find squat. I don't enjoy these TDS where you are forced to place the towers in certain blocks only. Making mazes in TD was by far one of the best points in some of the TDS. It makes no sense why there aren't similar games today.
Thank you for another great list of games I would never found :D I like the way you comment how the game looks and how people like it. It is very easy to understand without searching for every single game. I added 3 games to my wish/watch list. Keep it up!
Thanks! I'm glad you found it useful. I'm always trying to balance how much insight and information I should be sharing so I can inform but not confuse. Way more on the way, I'm planning 15 list videos for this year's collection.
@@_CJ_ Yeah I've never done that many, but figured I should go all out this year. Planning for 1 a week for the next 14 weeks. Like this one, many new genres I've never covered before too, so might be a little rough or weird in places but I'll try my best to keep everything as good as I can make it.
@@GamerZakh No, thank YOU for sticking with such a long-standing video series. I've been watching them for years and always find something useful to be on the lookout for in each video!
This is how I decide what to pay attention to. And how I can smugly go “ I know” when my friends try to tell me about a game I would like but think I don’t know about. I’m a git.
I played Cataclismo's demo a few months ago and it was fantastic. I can't believe it's taken so long for someone to make a game with such a great building system
I always get excited when I see tower defense games, and then get disappointed! In my opinion Defense grid is the best true tower defense game made true to the genre, as well as fieldrunners 2. I'm still waiting for something like these to come out with updated graphics, I'm not much on the hybrid games. Good video though 👍
Try Gemcraft, those were really good. Infinitode 2 was pretty good too. But most of what gets tower defense, like the examples in this video, don't qualify on any level. Sad to say that most of the good games are aging classics now.
I am glad to have come across this channel to listen to you discuss different tower defense games. There are so many out there, but I have been stuck on just one.
Great genre and picks! Thronefall (isometric kingdoms) and ORX (Carcassonne goes TD) are fun. My current not mentioned favs are CD2 Trap Master (card driven), Few nights more (lair defense?) and Hexguardian (tile laying TD). Cheers

Enjoyed the Thronefall demo. Didn't care for ORX, and I think I passed on Castle of Alchemists as well. The upcoming tower defense game I'm looking forward to most is Defender's Quest 2. The original was great.
You really need to look at Bee Island. They released in late August this year, but are adding new challenge modes. It's not on a lot of people's radar, but very well done & the format / gameplay is fantastic.
Thanks Zakh ! Some pretty nice games there, sentry, outpost and cataclismo look pretty fun ! As much as I love tower defense, I feel like they're the reason why classic RTS did die, I remember seeing more and more of those while RTS were slowly disappearing. (I hated that genre for a long time because of this) I thought Endless Dungeon was pushed to 2024 but maybe I dreamed it with a beta so late, it could be, don't lose hope yet. Also, some games which are still in EA are set for 2024 I believe? They're like cataclismo more city-building-ish ... Like Diplomacy is not an option, Alien Marauder and maybe age of Darkness? (they said winter for the final chapter of the campaign but nothing really about 1.0 but if it is, winter is more 2024 than 2023). Just like Siege or Irdor and Heart of Muriet (but they don't really have a release date yet, so it's hard to tel but most likely 2024), you announced them all previously under RTS a while ago though. Saw a few other titles but dunno if they're worth mentioning.
so annoying they can't just redo this in modern day format. I'd buy it instantly. its 20 years later and we have to settle for these ones I'm no fan of

Tower Defence huh, not a favourite genre of mine even though having Anomaly, Orcs Must Die, and Sanctum in the library, kinda intrigue with Thronefall and Infection Free Zone gameplay. Is it too early to be saying some of these games for the year 2024? Hahaha Thanks for the insight!
I've never really covered it properly before but I was looking at genres and realised that TD is more than just base building or RTS games, they have a specific own vibe and wanted to try expand this year. As for too early, haha well most of them are scheduled for 2024 already and those that say end of 2023 don't have a release date set (or releasing into early access) and in my experience that means they're gonna be delayed to 2024 at least. There's always going to be announcements through the year though, whenever you make a list like this it'll miss something because games get announced out of nowhere.
Any dev who releases a demo to the public automatically gets a huge thumbs up from me and instant consideration. If I'm even remotely interested I'll make it my goal to try out a game with a demo first. I'm also concerned for those devs because we are in an age of entitlement. I could see some people refusing to buy something that they would otherwise love because the demo made them angry or, whatever.
The demo thing is complicated yeah. Sometimes a demo is so old it's not representative of the game anymore, so the devs take the demo down because it's a bad example but then people get upset at the devs for removing the demo. But making a new demo isn't free, meaning many devs get stuck in this lose-lose position where they either leave the bad demo live and possibly discourage future buyers or spend money making a new demo that will hit the final product's budget making the final game worse, or they just take a PR hit for removing the free demo.
@@GamerZakh yeah totally. Even if you use existing resources, it's still dev time and, if something breaks, that's time you didn't account for. Then that's time not spent working on the actual game. So either way, you're paying for it. Which is exactly why I have nothing but respect for devs that aren't afraid to release a demo. Hopefully, we can foster a community that knows what to expect from said demos. :)
Ive been waiting for games like Hostile Mars FOREVER! Its been a long time since we got to test drive it, i hope we get to drive another round soon. Its like OG Fortnite, which was ruined by the BR version, that game was SO good
You had a keen eye for Infinity Siege... Unfortunately the final release sucks. The rest are OK though. Thanks for putting the effort in this vid. Quality job as always
Hostile Mars looks pretty cool, definite Starship Trooper vibes for me. Definitely agree that making sure it runs smoothly will be the biggest hurdle, interesting to watch how it goes.
I love demos. I might not buy your game, but I'll at least give it a shot. I've bought a bunch of games I would otherwise have passed over just because they had a demo.
I've played Hostile Mars awhile ago. It's still very much in Alpha. So yea they used tricks to make the trailer look good. It has potential, but a lot of work to do.
ive wanted a good td for a long time, but i havent fit anything that gave me the old wc3 vibes, everything takes neash concept of the td francizes i miss having to build mazes with towers defending stuff not how balloons td is and all that just placing where you can and going from there just doesnt do it justice everything becomes stagnet
Hackers is a good defence game, protect your core and farming resources using defensive, offensive and utility nodes. Attack other people's networks to steal their resources to upgrade yours. Be strategic as upgrading nodes disables them and potentially making you vulnerable to attacks, so make sure you upgrade your anti virus (defensive node) to repair and pushback attackers. Watch replays on attacks youve had and be given a chance to trace and attack their network back. Brilliant game
Hostile Mars looks insane. I bought a 4090 specifically for that type of reason - although if it's simply unoptimized to the point of not being playable then who knows!
I always enjoy your upcoming video list. Great video as always. I do think you should have included "super fantasy kingdom". It a great mix of tower defence and base building but its been in demo for quite a long time with the dev constanly adding changes. Please have a look at it.
Damn good list! I had more than a few already on the wish list, but you showed me some that I had no idea about. Tells me that you spot the same things I do, totally subscribing.
A few games i like look of but like yourself said .......IF.... trailers are just the selling game and game itself is pants lol...but enjoyed your vid as always :)
I'm so old school. I only play this little Android tower defense game Blasted Thieves. You should check it out! Thanks for the intro to new stuff. I like your sense of humor.
Anyone that likes TD style games, should try Path to Nowhere. It's a mobile game with amazing gameplay (similar to Arknights but way better in every aspect), very micro intensive end-game content, story on the same level as the best Final Fantasy games, writing on the same level as Nier: Automata and Mass Effect, OST on the same level as Nier: Automata and Genshin Impact, amazing characters, with art and character design that is unmatched by any other game.
I showcase what is, I don't decide what's being developed. With the gaming industry, graphics go to the most profitable genre because 'current gen graphics' are actually 'next gen graphics' and cost tens of millions of dollars, so that would be the action adventures and AAA blockbuster games like Spiderman and Star Wars games. When you think back to games that looked good 10, 20, or 30 years ago, those were actually next-gen graphics. When Final Fantasy 7 released, no game looked that good! Cube hands? Yeah you'd be lucky lol, that was next-gen. The vast majority of 1997 games were 2D and even the good looking ones like Age of Empires were next gen graphics. Most games looked like WarBreeds. So when comparing graphics of games through the ages, just try to keep in mind which games were actually AAA blockbusters and which were the actual standard of the day.
Thanks GamerZakh. As always these videos are great. Thronefall is awesome. Legendary Hoplite, and Qubiquest both look great. Not impressed with Castle of Alchemists (too active for my personal TD tastes) or ORX (it’s Carcassonne). Mildly Interested in Cataclismo, Mob Factory, Infection Free Zone, and Steel Republic. Though the first two look rough and the others don’t look much like TDs. Though the change might be more in perspective than in gameplay. I’m not really a genre stickler, and I like that TD is pushing out. The issue for me is the game-feel. Sentry, Hostile Mars, and Outpost: Infinity Siege is in a different brain space from TDs for me.
About Hostile Mars: I find it interesting, thatt their minimum requirements are VERY modest for what they're showing. The AMD FX-6300 is like, what ... 12 years old by now? Or maybe 13 years? ... And then 4 GB of RAM...
Outpost infinite siege has nice gameplay in tower defense but on release they made to much of lootgame that result to 4h loot section with no explanation how to manage resources(no ingame guide) then be overwhelmed with a 20-30 min tower defense section defense where you can loose all the loot from the 4h loot section.
Hi there are there any latest, recent or future buys for Tower Defense. My style is more suited to Defense Grid, warcraft tower defense like. I just want like standard mechanics with a bit latest graphics? Really struggling to find one? Gem Craft looks amazing but I dont find the gems interesting wish it had ballista's or archers or catapults, watchtowers etc. X morph looks amazing too im thinking of trying this one. Hope I can find something similar to my taste :)
That's what I thought, but I made this list for the first time for 2024 because there has been a MASSIVE spike in TD games and players over the last year. As you can see, this video blew up because of that. It's blowing up a second time right now, that's why you're here now. I don't know what you mean by "true" TD game. Every time someone says there's a "true definition" it conflicts with every else who says they have a "true definition".
I'll be honest... none of these felt like Tower Defense games. I feel like the idea of a 'Tower Defense' game has become way too broad. There's Base Defense, there's Trap Defense, there's Factory Games... and just because they have static defenses you can place does not make them 'Tower Defense' games. I know genres evolve and whatnot but... I don't think any of those are actually Tower Defense. I think they are their own genres, and none of these games really fit into the 'Tower Defense' genre. Also not sure why the word 'Overwhelming' is randomly in the title.
Genre definitions can be discussed forever, especially when it's in the middle of evolving like this one. But the word 'overwhelming' is just flavour text and a hook which indicates the vibe of the games this year. These games are very swarmlike with the enemies. It's like for the factory list I used the word 'mindbreaking' because they are particularly complicated this year and I put 'real strategy' for the RTS list because the games there are mostly trying to be like classic RTS games which in the RTS community they keep saying those are 'real RTS games'. Without the vibe word, the title every year ends up the same. RTS 2014, RTS 2015, RTS 2016, RTS 2017. But it's actually quite different year to year.
kinda funny how as we progress in tech, games either get really realistic or really archaic. some great games in this list though, got my eye on a few. And hey, if anyone likes the idea of factory mob should try out Mindustry, Really great game with expansive campaign. just not all that ballanced, ona those that takes a while to complete but leaves you wanting more. but it has a sandbox with loads of fanbase built mods to substitute. Would reccomend"
dont forget that Arknights is somewhat a mix of Tower Defences,Gacha games, and Waifu/Husbando Collectors all in 1 packages something i never think that was possible lol
There was a game a couple years ago, and the turrets and weapons looked just like hostile mars but the game was more animated but not blocky or realistic, any idea what it is? The creatures was pretty much the same, I remember them being like aliens or sun type of creatures but u basically had to go through between waves setting turrets up along the path they would take. I’ve been trying to find the game for sometime now but I just can’t figure it out. Any ideas?
@GamerZakh haha you say that, but I ended up adding them all to my wishlist as they all have some intriguing things to offer the TD genre and indie PC gaming in general. I am sure I won't end up buying them all as they get released but they all have enough going for them that I want to keep track of them. Thanks for the list!

Orx being the true definition of cool cover and sbitty insides
I've played Hostile Mars awhile ago. It's still very much in Alpha. So yea they used tricks to make the trailer look good. It has potential, but a lot of work to do.
ive wanted a good td for a long time, but i havent fit anything that gave me the old wc3 vibes, everything takes neash concept of the td francizes
i miss having to build mazes with towers defending stuff not how balloons td is and all that just placing where you can and going from there just doesnt do it justice everything becomes stagnet
Thronefall is astoundingly good !
I remember fondly the old Warcraft 3 tower defense custom maps. Too bad none of these really look like that.
Amazing! TD is my favorite genre. Keep it up Zakh!
Trying Thronefall off this list! Thanks
I always enjoy your upcoming video list. Great video as always. I do think you should have included "super fantasy kingdom". It a great mix of tower defence and base building but its been in demo for quite a long time with the dev constanly adding changes. Please have a look at it.
Thanks! Don't worry, I have that game set to be in another list right now.
@@GamerZakhwow that's great. I thought you missed it. Can't wait for the video!
Damn good list! I had more than a few already on the wish list, but you showed me some that I had no idea about. Tells me that you spot the same things I do, totally subscribing.
Defenders Quest 2 is finally coming out this year that is more of a TD than most of the games you featured imo
When this video was made, Defenders Quest was set for a 2023 release. I don't have a crystal ball you know.
A few games i like look of but like yourself said .......IF.... trailers are just the selling game and game itself is pants lol...but enjoyed your vid as always :)
Thanks! Yeah can't always judge from the trailers, but at least a lot of good ideas.
yep cheers @@GamerZakh
I also started my journey with TD in Warcraft 3 :D!!!!!
Damn that castle craft game looks 🔥
I love TD!
I playing in "Bots Rush". TD with make resourses. But it's "early access"
Thronefall, Cataclismo, QubiQuest and Infection Free Zone - > gonna check these, maybe Castle of Alchemists
Defense Zone 2 is my favorite. There is a Defense Zone 1, 2, and 3.
Very good selection😊
Thronefall looks fun
Any idea when you'll showcase games from this era? Kinda fed up with games that look like they were developed in the '80s.
I did not know i was looking for a TD now. But alot of intresting games here
Thanks GamerZakh.
Great list! thanks
Thanks glad you liked it!
which of these are coop?
Great list, thank You!👍
About Hostile Mars: I find it interesting, thatt their minimum requirements are VERY modest for what they're showing. The AMD FX-6300 is like, what ... 12 years old by now? Or maybe 13 years? ... And then 4 GB of RAM...
Have yet to see a tower defense better then youtd for warcraft 3
Outpost infinite siege has nice gameplay in tower defense but on release they made to much of lootgame that result to 4h loot section with no explanation how to manage resources(no ingame guide) then be overwhelmed with a 20-30 min tower defense section defense where you can loose all the loot from the 4h loot section.
Just give me a Defence Grid 3... or a spiritual successor.
I want to ask you to try out a stealth RTS game based on the Alien franchise
"Aliens: Dark Descent"
You really flooded us with Early Access Never ending hells.
Could you please suggest best games that are ACTUALLY freakin released...?
I can grab them from old lists. Generally we can go back 3 years and most would have released. Which genre are you looking for?
Hi there are there any latest, recent or future buys for Tower Defense. My style is more suited to Defense Grid, warcraft tower defense like. I just want like standard mechanics with a bit latest graphics? Really struggling to find one?
Gem Craft looks amazing but I dont find the gems interesting wish it had ballista's or archers or catapults, watchtowers etc. X morph looks amazing too im thinking of trying this one.
Hope I can find something similar to my taste :)
Thanks! realy interest games
7 Days to Die is also part Tower Defense. I just can recommend this game.
mindustry
Idk what universe makes TD games “one of the most popular genres in gaming” when you can count almost every true TD game on both hands
Grabbed thronefall thank you
Glad you found a new one!
+1 for Thronefall.
Oddly enough I played so many TD games on Newgrounds for free I find it hard to pay for any.
Would reccomend"
no watcher of realms? the best rpg tower defense game
Castle of Alchemists is amazing!
dont forget that Arknights is somewhat a mix of Tower Defences,Gacha games, and Waifu/Husbando Collectors all in 1 packages
something i never think that was possible lol
Okay but also it released 3-4 years ago, so not exactly in the scope for 2024.
I love TD:S they are fun.
Any ideas?
It's not the one in the intro right? Sanctum 2?
Very nice list..❤
I need something like Kingdom: two crowns please🙏 any suggestions
Sentry reminds me a lot of Orcs Must Die!
Exept for Mob Factory, none of these are the kind of thing i look for in a tower defense.
Generally these lists have a lot of options so you can find the 1 or 2 that you'll like. No one likes all of them.
