    At long last, Apple has finally announced and will soon be releasing Arm-based Macs based on Apple's new "Apple Silicon" family. This new chip, the M1, is based on the A14 and makes its way to the MacBook Air, 13" MacBook Pro with Touch Bar, and Mac mini. Specs are vague and performance is yet to be determined, but if Apple's slides are to be believed, this chip design and these machines are just the beginning of a hugely important transition for Apple and computing in general. But let's go beyond what Apple said in the keynote and dive into some of the nuance behind this new Apple Silicon M1 chip.

      This is genuinely wrong. Market is whole lot bigger than few percent comsumer devices.99.99% devices you daily use or contact(from dishwasher to bluetooth headphones to garage door) are embedded ICs designed to be programmed and implemented in consumer devices. The problem is that apple highly benefits with things it literally trying to kill. M1 is impossible without ARM architecture. M1 might be a best implementation of ARM architecture, but it will never be comparable to its source itself. Unlike Intel with their amd64 implementation, for example.

      @@theoneonly5368 Steve Jobs knew shit about CPU architcture and never designed a single circuit, never cared and never needed to care. Thats not the point, he was great in other things. The point is that ARM is whole lot bigger than Apple, Qualcomm, Microsoft or any other company who uses this architecture. Using qoutes by famous people does not really mean that you or any other person understands more and thus agrees because of knowledge and experience. If you rotate the qoute and look at reality, every hardware manufacturer who tried to go into OS market sucked badly on mass-market. IBM, HP, Motorola, Nokia, NeXT(lmao), Atari and many many others proved this qoute sounds good but it is not even closely accurate, it is great motto but nothing more.

      I mean, technically it does improve by 0.2x, but it's performance is 1.2x that of the previous generation.
      1(current gen) + x(improvement over current gen) = 1 + 0.2 = 1.2 times the performance. Improving by 1.2x would mean, you take the current gen, and add 1.2 to it.
      If I run a race, and then the next lap I run it 20% faster, I only improved by 0.2 (20%), but my speed was 1.2 times that of the first lap. It's all about the relationship. One is how much extra on top of the previous generation, as a percentage, and the other is how it compares proportionally to the previous generation.

    I love all of Apple stuff but I have to ask a question here. If they are so freaking smart, why is voice dictation still STILL Such a busted-ass technology, and still busted-ass in Big Sur?
    Everything that was broken in Catalina, is still broken in Big Sur. It's like they didn't even give it two minutes of time to fix. As someone who is disabled with neuropathy in my hands this is a big problem for me. Voice dictation worked great until the release of Catalina. It has been borderline useless every since.

    Apple silicon will probably be pretty amazing, and I can’t wait to see how they drive. But I’m still weary of how it will impact app makers and (more importantly) that we will lose 14 years of PC/Mac interoperability. This was a fact of life for a long time, like when I was in college: no taking that floppy or CD from a PC to a Mac! But nowadays now one would imagine you can’t just go back and forth from Mac to PC. It may very well return to this, and the Apple vs. PC choice may become much more loaded than it’s been in the past years...
    I’m also worried that the universal apps between iOS and Mac won’t be that great, in that the quality and usability of apps will go down. iOS apps are pretty cool, but if we start having nothing but universal apps, I doubt these will be to the level of Mac apps, rather just taking iOS “simpler” apps and making them the new Mac standard. Time may prove me wrong, but I fear a future of candy coated, non-pro apps.
    And I’m not even mentioning right to repair. That’s just a fact of the Apple life, and these are basically disposable computers now.

      I'm wary of the Apple tax once they have you fully locked in + it feels like they want you to buy new every three or four years. Not exactly environmentally friendly to be honest.
      I already have a 2018 MBP that now has a failing battery and keyboard that could be a very expensive doorstop in a year or so.
      As a mac user for 20+ years now I've already switched to a studio PC instead of the Mac Pro route for 3D work, maybe it's time to switch the laptop too. Let's see how this plays out.

    • @pixlplague
      @pixlplague 3 роки тому +7

      @@billB101 I'd echo pretty much all of that. That's 100% Apple's strategy: vertical integration. It's already succeeded in mobile devices, why not computers?! Once you've invested all this money and effort in it, you can still get away from it but at what cost?
      And I come from a good position with Apple: I have never had a machine fail on me, and even my 10 year old MPBs run as smooth as the first day. But I know for a fact I'm the exception. Now I get mild anxiety about my next computer because I'm thinking it may have to be a pc lol

      Computer interoperability is better than ever because now we have open standards and cross-platform build tools, etc. The processor architecture that is running your computer may in the future not matter at all when most stuff is running on interpreted languages like JavaScript or compiled just in time, etc.

    • @pixlplague
      @pixlplague 3 роки тому +1

      @@SlyEcho it's not 1999 anymore that's for sure, and it's my hope this holds true. But... Apple isn't keen on playing well with others and if they can force you into the ecosystem they will. I realize the architecture won't matter all that much for files, but we already have sub-par file system cross compatibility (re: USB and SD) and on a more meta level, if apps don't get ported properly or at all, learning to work with a Mac and a PC could very well become like learning Spanish and French...

    I'd be surprised if it was compared against something like a AMD Ryzen 9 4900HS.

  • @plentyofpaper
    @plentyofpaper 3 роки тому +38

    I would interpret:
    "0.2 times improvement" to mean 20% better.
    "1.2 times improvement" to mean 120% better.
    "2.5 to 5 times as fast" would bean 150% to 400% better.
    "0.2 times as fast" to mean 80% slower.
    "1.2 times as fast" to mean 20% faster.
    The term "improvement" to me means we are using a 1.0, or 100% as the baseline, and the "modifier" number given is implied to be added to that 1.0 baseline. The alternative would be to interpret a 0.2 times improvement to be an 80% downgrade, in which case "improvement" is being used incorrectly.
    In any case, I think it's wise to use "x% improvement" for values of x between 1% and 100%. And "x times as much/faster" for values of double or higher.

    • @dankosek4274
      @dankosek4274 3 роки тому +4

      Very good explanation except for one glaring error. 2.5x is not 150%, it’s 250%. Otherwise, you would have to change the 400% down to 300%. I personally believe that we should remove the initial on par 100% of the prior system and finish the conversion to a percentage number. Finish the math and let the reader stay on point with the article being read or listened to.

    • @plentyofpaper
      @plentyofpaper 3 роки тому

      @@dankosek4274 Thank you for the catch. I used unintended wording, and in fact, misunderstood the statement in the video. I'll edit the original post.
      I meant "2.5 to 5 times as fast" would be a 150%-400% improvement. Which is what I thought the video was in effect saying.
      The exact wording of the video was however, "All of these machines are increasing in performance anywhere between 2.5 to 5 times" which should be interpreted as 250% to 500%.
      Although given the confusing nature of mixing "times" and "improving by" combined with the context of using relatively large numbers leaves me unsure whether the intent was actually 2.5 times base, or 2.5 times more than base (3.5 times base.) It's likely to be kind of moot, as this is probably Apple cherry-picking the best numbers they can possibly find.

      There will obviously be things that a x86 cpu will outperform a 64 bit ram chip. This iteration might be slightly painful but it honestly doesn’t seem too bad. However the the more exciting part about this is this initial push from Apple is what was needed. Because now as history will repeat itself, Apple makes that first move and then everyone else starts to follow.
      This will be very interesting how it will affect the desktop market in the long run. You mainly just have Intel and AMD (not including IBM) and if the mainstream pushes towards ARM for desktops they are going to need to adapt. On top of that, it brings other companies into the realm of processors for both desktops and laptops.
      Microsoft has been very very slow and uneventful with their attempts, the surface RT was an actual dumpster fire and you couldn’t run anything on it. And just until now I had no idea Microsoft even released another arm based surface. They definitely can’t get any traction in that market yet. Especially considering the main pro at this point to windows is to have the most app compatibility. Where they couldn’t provide any type of solution to run normal windows apps.

      @@IAmCjcj11 x86 chips are ALL 64bit since the late 90's early 2000's except for the occasional specialist one. How will history repeat itself? Apple was late to drop RISC cpus (after even Alpha went under), LG had their touchscreen smartphone phone out 6 months prior to the iPhone, the iPod was largely bought off others (name, design, hardware, and software). I suppose having an 'open' store where people could submit their apps was new, but wasn't exactly open.
      Surface RT was terrible, it was an unmitigated disaster because they were trying to emulate the closed ecosystem of Apple and didn't spend enough time making sure it had applications.
      Big Sur will hopefully actually do what they were saying and allow WebP images and the other web standardised formats everyone else accepts.

      I bet the 16” MBP and iMacs will have a different chip or multi chip. They always seem to use higher end chips in those products and leave the weaker sauce for mini, air and 13”. New Mac Pro will most likely have anew chip. M1Xeon? Lol.

    ordered an m1 mac mini w/ 16gb ram this morning for video editing. have been using a late 2013 macbook pro w/ 8gb ram and it has done surprisingly well with 4k sony a7s2 footage but the new a7s3 codecs have not been happening. was planning on a pc build to run davinci resolve until i came to realize how weird the supply/demand is for pc parts right now (especially a capable gpu...)
